MSI K9A2 CF Big Problem

Hi there, ive got an problem with my mobo, MSI K9AS CF its v2 i think since it got a red heatstink on the mosfets.
The problem is, the bios is from Acer ( Aspire G7200 ) ive bought the mobo from somone, and exchanged it with my old one wich burned ( USB Ports ).
The mobo is running with AMD Phenom 9950BE and its showing crazy temps, like 80c on idle in the bios, and 55-65 in Core Temp. ( on the old mobo never more then 63 on full load )
Ive tried to find a bios update for this mobo, but kinda failed, and i dont know if i can just update the mobo with the orginal MSI's latest bios since its a Acer bios.
Thx for any help.
Regards.

I am sorry, we do not support OEM products here. You would need to contact Acer.

    Now i have 3gb ddr2 from Geil
    it's pc2 6400 800mhz cl 4-4-4-12
    with 2x 512mb en 2x 1gb
    I installed Vista 64 home premium and bought 8 gigs DDR2, it's 2 sets of 4gb
this 1: http://www.geil.com.tw/products/showSpec/id/52 they have thesame specs only its cl 5-5-5-15 and 1.8v instead of 2.1 volt, my old are 2.1V.
When i plug em in and turn on my PC i wont get any signal AT ALL, my monitor doesnt even react and stays on standby mode. I re-plugged my old memory and everything works fine. I changed the volts, which were on 2.1V, to 1.8V in my Bios and tried again, no reaction. I tried several combinatiosn and only 1 set of the new memory but it doesnt work.
Is it mayb the BIOS that needs an update or should i change Volt AND the CL 5-5-5-15 timings?
According to the website of MSI my mobo would be able to use the new memory i bought doesnt it?
I hope any1 of u experts got an idea =)
    thx
    Gaarman, holland.

Well, put command rate at 2T and try all 4 sticks, however it might fail again as the CPU needs to be able to start before the BIOS kicks in.
Judging on your higher needed voltage, these sticks are not very good....

This doesn't sound very promising either.
AMD is NOT Intel, it has a far faster memory controller then the listed testing systems....else try DDR667 and see what happens if you use that speed.

If you are mixing 2*512MB twinmos twister with WLCSP chips with 2*256MB kingston hynix based TSOP chips
i don't think it's strange that you have those experiences .
Or is it twisters with tsop dimm packages (twister-pro) .
I under the impression that twister with wlcsp isn't the best compability for the A64's memory controller , they seem to work best at P4 setups .
Try with only one type of modules .
It's hard for the motherboard to set timings by spd if the modules are all of different programmed spd proms .
Remember that 3.4.4.8 is spd data for DDR533 operation for one pair and 3.4.4.8 for 500DDR operation for the other pair.
What (if they have any) are the spd data they have for DDR400 (it's the 200mhz/DDR400 spd data the motherboard shall read).

  • MSI K9A2 CF-F V1 Power-up problem

Hi. I have these hardware parts:

when i press start button, system tries to startup around 1 second and then turns off. All fans (CPU,VGA,...) turn on a while during this. Usually different beep paterns could be heard! It's a wonder, it could start-up fine with a AthlonX2 DualCore CPU! I tried 2 different phenom CPUs but both failed to start. Consider that i already have upgraded BIOS during a successful boot with a athlonX2 cpu and both phenom CPUs (9550,9500) are supported by this motherboard.

All things you mentioned guys are basic but important rules and I'm not a rookie
I've already paid enough attention for such effective simple things but NO CACHE.Believe it or not some strange problems is also occurred with this Asus M3A: Everything is all right but every high end 3D games crushes and PC hangs! some strange noises from motherboard! I've tried another PSU, 3 different DIMMs and I AM REALLY DISAPPOINTED AND EXHAUSTED.  For next step in this painful procedure I'm going to put that Gigabyte nVidia 8800GT away and test another VGA.

  • MSI K9A2-Boot Problems & Installation Issue

In putting together a new system, see sig, I decided to go with the MSI K9A2 board.  I have used MSI and Abit boards for a number of years and this is the first time I have had to post about an MSI board giving me fits, apparently.  I say apparently because my troubleshooting has me looking hard at the board.  I assembled the system, originally with Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC6400 memory and the system failed to POST.  Having read some posts about memory issues, I had verified that this memory should work.  I did a lot of troubleshooting on the board.  I will admit that I was a bit surprised by the power on button that is actually on the board.  I reset the CMOS (using the directions posted in these forums), reset and checked connections (yes, both the extra CPU and Graphics power connectors were attached) and finally resorted to stripping out everything but the MB and essential components onto a tabletop.  This also produced a no POST.  Lastly, removed one of the RAM modules, so that only one RAM was in the MB in DIMM slot 1.  Hit the power button and the system posted.  At this point I did not do much with the BIOS other than insure that the CPU and temps were ok.  I loaded optimized defaults, saved, rebooted and powered down.  I added the second DIMM module and no POST.   I removed the second DIMM, powered up the system, received a chksum error, hit F1 and went into the BIOS, loaded defaults and it would boot on one DIMM with no chksum errors.  Confirmed this behavior a couple of times.
Ok.  So now I am looking at memory.  I ran out and purchased the DDR2 memory in my sig and installed it into the MB.  POSTed on the first run.  I was optimistic at this point that the issue was solved and I moved onto installing Windows XP.  Hard drive is recognized and in SATA 1 and the DVD drive is in SATA 2.  Windows loads the installation screens and everything goes well, until it finishes formatting and starts to copy the files.  At this point it hangs at 3%.  After many iterations of it hanging I went back and stared at the memory.  I went into the bios and set it at 4-4-4-15 and 2.1V.  As I had been around this horse a number of times I tried the install again, using a 20GB partition after updating the BIOS and it formatted and started loading Windows.  (This is were I should have just let it go....)  As I wanted the primary partition to be greater than 20GB, I blew that away and went for a 70GB partition......and we hang at 3% again.  When it hangs it is failing to copy a *.tss file.
At this point I am looking at the MB and thinking....RMA.
Two new pairs of memory and the hanging at 3% are pointing me there, any comments?
    Thanks,
    R

    Quadrifoglio,
SATA 1 is the first red port, but the manual is saying the red ports are on the SB600 controllor and that the purple ports (SATA 5 and 6) are on the Promise controller.  I am currently using the OCZ memory as it allowed the system to POST without any issues on the first time around with both sticks installed.
The HD is currently on the SATA 1 slot, which is red SB600 controller.
    Aaron,
I have not backed down the memory timings yet as I have been able to post and I did manage to load Windows on a 20GB partition.  I will keep this in mind if I continue to have issues, but I would like to keep them at their factory settings (I guess b/c it makes me feel like they are "working" as they should).
    General
I would like to have the DVD drive in the equation, so if I am switching the HD to the purple SATA ports should I move the DVD drive there as well?  Or what I probably should do is leave the CD-ROM on the system (which is currently attached via an IDE cable) and just fiddle with the HD for now.
Memory in the system now: OCZ with timings and voltage set to defaults for the memory.
    So, my plan for tonights activities;
    1. Leave the HD on the red SATA 1 controller (SB600).
    2. Leave the CD-ROM attached to the IDE controller.
    3. Enter the BIOS and tell it to operate the drive in IDE mode.
    4. Remove all current partitions, reset partitions with the system partition set to 70GB
    5. Format and attempt installation.
    If that fails
    1. Move the HD to the purple SATA 5 controller (Promise).
    2. Leave the CD-ROM attached to the IDE controller.
    3. Leave the BIOS setting at IDE mode.
    4. Remove all current partitions, reset partitions with the system partition set to 70GB
    5. Format and attempt installation.
    If that fails
Drink heavily and watch TRON, 'cause if I was TRON I could fix anything.
    A couple of questions;
-This maybe a silly question, but do I need to specifically tell the BIOS to enable LBA, even for SATA drives?  I do not recall having to do this in a previous build using an Abit MB and SATA drive.
-Will I go back into the BIOS, if and when Windows loads, and tell the HD to run in what mode?
-Are there any other BIOS settings that I am overlooking?
-UPDATE: Quadrifoglio or anyone, When the BIOS has an option for AHCI (like the K9A2 does and you can select AHCI, IDE, etc.) by leaving it on Auto with a SATA drives present (HD and Optical Drive) does the possibility exist that Windows XP will hiccup on install because it does not understand AHCI?  Some of the information I have come across seems to suggest this maybe an issue.
Thanks for folks looking at this problem/scenario.  I have been building systems for awhile and this one is taking me back to the first system I ever built in '96 were I could not for the life of me figure out why the darn system was unstable, not recognizing my HD's, BSODing on me.  The solution in that case, install chipset drivers. duh.

  • Problems with memorys G.Skill DDR2-1000MHz vs MSI K9A2 Platinum Motherboard

    Hello,
    First, please, sorry my English.
I'm having problems with my memories. I bought a pack memory G.Skill model DDR2-1000 / PC2-8000 (2x2048Mb) F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ and installed on an MSI K9A2 Planinum with AMD Phenom 9750. The memories do not work on dual channel (only 64bit) and not working in 1000Mhz clock. (working at 800MHz). Installed according to the manual and the problem continues.
I sent an email to the G. Skill but they're not helped me much. http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=38
I wonder if there is incompatibility between the memories and the motherboard and if there is to correct the problem.
    Thanks. ???

This response in that thread on the G.Skill forum scares me...
    Quote
if the problem is only the dual channel one, it would be more possible caused by the motherboard
it is the north bridge that controls memory settings
I know we've had heated discussions about the 'northbridge' on AMD64 systems (and I don't want this thread going off-topic!) but this from HardwareSecrets.com just sums up where the G'Skill admin is wrong:
    Quote
Since the memory controller is embedded in the CPU, the memory capacity – including memory types supported and support for dual channel – is defined by the CPU and not by the north bridge (i.e. by the motherboard), as it happens with CPUs based on other architectures. A side effect of this architecture is that motherboards for AMD64 CPUs don’t have noticeable performance difference between them, as all of them use the very same memory controller (the one inside the CPU).

    I have tried.
    * turning off Hyper threating
*More fans : 3*80 mm fans and 2 x 120 mm fans (placed according to rules
    intake/outtake)
*replacing RAM and tested with MEMtest86 (no error's)
*replacing keyboard and mouse with wired keyboard and mouse
*replacing graficcard with a other brand (same model) and a other brand (differend model)
    *changing hard disk
    *reinstalling windows
    *replacing IDE wires
*keeping a eye on the temperature (is normal )
*keeping a eye on the voltage ( normal)
*replacing power supple with a heavere one
But nothing helps.  Does some one knows what the problem can be or do i send it back and ask for a RMA.  And buy a motherboard that does work.. : ?(   :O

    foxie,
My first 865PE Neo2 FIS2r board had BIG problems with on-board LAN, didnt work at all most of the time. No systemcrashes but you could not connect to Internet or LAN.
But since a PCI networkcard work OK, it wasn´t difficult to RMA it to my lockal computershop. They got the same result. I got a new board that work perfect.

    Hi, guys.
    I have
    MSI K9A2 Platinum
    AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core
    Gigabyte Radeon HD 4850 1GB
    Corsair Value S. PC5300 DDR2 4GB * 2
and been using it fine for quite some time. I was dabbling in 3DS Max and left a big render job on overnight. The next day my system was dead. When I press the power button the CPU fan spins for 1 second and the LEDs flash on and off. I read these forums and came across this thread: http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=113170.0. The exact same problem. And he fixed it by replacing the PSU. So I thought I should give it a try and replaced my Chieftech 550W with an XFX 650W, but the problem persists. I am thinking it is the CPU since it happened during a render. Any thoughts?
    regards

Hmm, sounds eeriely familiar to me... what happens if you disconnect the 4pin CPU power connector? Does the fan stay spinning, and the LEDs on the board stay illuminated (but system still does not POST)?
I had a K9A2 Platinum board for some time, and the same thing happened to me... tried different PSU, CPU and RAM, but it turned out to be a problem with the board's voltage regulator, and I ended up replacing the board...

It appears when the procesor is set to XP 1700+. After the temerature of processor rise obove 55 C my computer is shutdown automaticly even if the bios option "critical CPU themerature" is disabled. When it happens something like alarm siren goes off. It is one high and one low sound.
Another big problem is dramaticaly low ( even 20% - after one hour work ) "system resources". I dont know if it is call like that in english so it is START->Settings->Control Panel->System->"performance".
    Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!

First thing you might want to do is get a new PSU. Anything under 300W is pretty much going to make for an unstable system for any processor like yours. AMD recommends(if I remember correctly) 300W or better and also read up on this sticky, I think it will help you out.

With the above configuration, I get no beeps nor video display when powering on the PC.  When PC is powered on, CPU fan spins, GPU fan spins, HD makes noise, butcannot power off via power button.  GPU and PSU work fine with another system, as well as the HD.  Tried booting with 1 stick of RAM and changing slot placement - no success.  Tried booting with minimum devices attached - no success.
I had the same problem with the same board and I obtained an RMA, after experiencing the same problem with the new board I am under the impression that something is wrong with my hardware setup.
Thank you very much for any suggestions, I've been messing around with the PC for weeks and can't seem to find/produce a solution.  Is it possible I may need to file another RMA?

You know, I would agree with you, but the memory is a PC-8500 kit, rated at ddr2-1066, thus I'm not actually overclocking them. I'm attempting to just clock them, if you will, rather than run them underclocked. Happy new year, btw!
Yes you are. That's heavy OC settings:

Okay, got my compy workin again! Lo and behold, it wasn't the board after all. My sincerest apologies. Ordered new ram, OCZ Platinum DDR2-1066 2x2 Gb, plugged it in, and the machine fired right up. There was much rejoicing.
Anyway, I have a new problem:
Before my compy died, I had the CPU and RAM overclocked to 3.2 GHz and 1066 MHz, respectively. Worked great. Now, however, I cannot get my system to POST when I try to overclock it to those speeds. The fastest I can get it stable is 3.192GHz, with the following settings:
    CPU FSB: 266
    HT Ratio: x4
    CPU Mult: x12
    CPU Freq: 3192 MHz
RAM set at 5-5-5-15, FSB/Mem 1:1.66, Adjusted DDR frequency 1064, CPU-Z says 1058, no biggie.
    CPU Voltage: 1.399 V
    RAM Voltage: 2.2 V
    Here's the settings I try for 3.2GHz and 1066:
    CPU FSB: 320
    HT: x4
    CPU Mult: x10
RAM still at 5-5-5-15, for 1066MHz
No go at all. Spread Spectrum disabled, Cool N Quiet disabled
    Thanks!

Only AM2+ CPU can support 1066.

  • MSI K9A2 Platinum + Phenom 9600 + 2GB Mushkin XP8500 cannot boot into windows

    Hi!
I am building my computer using the Spider platform and I ran across problems during booting into windows.
I am using MSI K9A2 platinum with Phenom 9600 and Mushkin 2Gb kit XP8500 ddr2 1066. I have no problem installing windows xp.
The problem starts when I install the utility and drivers that come on a cd from MSI, my computer requests to re-boot after installation and after
that it will not boot into windows. I can get to the windows logo and then the system reboots right away.
I checked the bios and it shows that the ram is running at 800mhz and i have tried running with just 1 stick and im getting the same problem every time.
Anyone knows how to resolve this?
    thanks!

Everything is stable now...I guess installing the driver from the MSI website is the best thing to do right now
I notice that my ram is underclocked to 800mhz instead of 1066mhz...I have update the motherboard BIOS to v1.2 and i checked that the ram is running on unganged mode...I tried adjusting the spd to 5-5-4-12 with voltage of 2.2v as suggested by the mushkin ram itself
    Any idea?
"I have update the motherboard BIOS to v1.2 and i checked that the ram is running on unganged mode..."
    That is the correct mode.
"I notice that my ram is underclocked to 800mhz instead of 1066mhz..."
1066 is not officially certified by JEDEC, also your memory probably don't have SPD configuration for that freq.
Contact to Mushkin for more details.

    Yep
    "Everything is stable now.."
    nice

  • Msi k9a2: unable to install win xp (sp3) on WD 150Gb velociraptor

I recently bought a MSI k9a2 V2 mobo, with 2x1Gb 1066 memory and AMD 9850. I installed win xp on a WD 150Gb raptor connected to sata1. Bios upgraded to 1.5, I got the mem to run on 1066 by changing the bios mem setting to 1:2.66.
A week later I wanted the board changed to  V1 because I need the Promise Sata 5 and 6 ports.
This board is an absolute pain: WD raptor not recognised by sb600 raid port1, even though the correct driver is installed. Ports 2 thru 4 see the drive, but I still cannot install the win xp os, I can connect the drive to the promise connectors, but I also cannot install the os. Installing win xp os on a 7200rpm drive (ie Samsung 1Gb) works, but I want it on a raptor.
MSI support tells me to upgrade to bios 1.65, which is brand new since last week, and is not even put on their website yet, I had to get a password and login to get it from their ftp. I succesfully installed the new bios, but no change.
This board has a Tom's Hardware recommendation but it absolutely does not deserve it. I find it unacceptable that installing an os requires such a pain. If and when I find a solution I will post it, but I would very much appreciate help or input from anyone with similar experiences and/or new ideas.

    just an FYI
I too had problems with 3 MSI K9A2 Platinum and the 9950BE, ATI 4850 and 4GB OCZ 1066, but i managed to find the problems... I think
OK, the first board would not recognize any of my HD's (4 10k Raptors) SOLUTION: BAD BOARD=EXCHANGE
OK the second board was very unstable, would throw BSOD all the time even just loading WINDOWS VISTA either on IDE, RAID on SB600 or Promise RAID...  SOLUTION: EXCHANGE (thinking it was defective)
3rd board; I really wanted the 4x PCIe 16x slots and no other board has this layout, so I started HARD on the board, loaded VISTA 64 in IDE mode ch1 on a RAPTOR 10k, after loading I got a BSOD  , so I boot and entered the bios, I set all at default and started one MENU at the time, i found the my RAM was not working at 1066, but at 800MHz, so i change it to 1:2.66 for a 1066MHZ, and booted.
another BSOD  , I went back to the bios and checked the voltage to the ram...   , my ram is rated for 2.1v not 1.8 that the system was delivering  so i manually changed the voltage, and booted...  well it lasted longer, I was able to load some applications and games... and then BSOD    what else can be wrong
I then loaded AMD overdrive utils to monitor the system and try to OC the Phenom ( call me crazy for trying to Overclock a non stable system, but i wanted to find out why it was not stable...)
so I let the system autoOC and it crashed every single time...
I don't give up easy..  the Phenom 9950 is know for easy OC to at least 3.0Ghz, so I manually started OC the CPU on the Overdrive software and checking the temp and voltage.. and then I discover one thing  , as i changed the multiplier slider on the AMD overdrive, it adjusted the voltage up slightly and i was able to OC to 3.0 Ghz and run benchmarks, but the fun soon stop by the dreaded BSOD, so i started back at the bios by setting the processor multiplier by default, but increase the voltage (so no OC'ing is done now, just up the voltage)
4hrs later no BSOD's and the system is running like a champ  , so it came to me... the CPU Cores need more voltage even at the default speed, as i noticed that they run OK w/o BSOD as long as the don't exceed about 60-80% load for long before system HUNG or BSOD, now all I needed was to OC and boost the volage even higher
    so far I been running error free @ 15x Multiplier, 1.448v 3.0Ghz, OCZ ram 1066MHz @ 2.1 5-5-5-18 per LABEL on RAM, ATI 4850 Saphire OC'd to 690MHz core/ 2196MHz Memory (1098)
so to summarized all this; the Phenom CPU's are under voltage! and this board you need to enter all the voltage, timings, ratios for the RAM.
I hope this helps other users, but be careful not to push the voltage to high!
