MSI K9N2 Platinum Power Supply Recommendations

Hi, I am looking for a new power supply as my original burned out.  Come to find out that since I upgraded my 2gb Corsair RAM to 4gb, it was not enough to supply power to it.  *silly me*
My specs:
MSI K9N2 Platinum SLI
AMD64 X2 4000+ 2.81Ghz OC'D
320 GB Seagate SATA ( I plan to purchase and install a new hard drive soon. Probably a 1TB Western Digital drive so will be running 2 Hard drives)
4 GB Corsair DDR2 DHX (Orginally 2GB Corsair DDR2)
EVGA 8800 GT 512MB DDR3
DVD-R/W
My original power supply was a 450 Watts PSU.  Now that its burned out, I will need a new one to replace it.  I use my computer mainly for gaming, web browsing, etc.
I aim to look at the Corsair PSU brand because it is a very good PSU.  Can anyone suggest the amount of watts that I will need?
Thanks in advance.

With the 8800GT, you should have a PSU that's capable of 26A, or 30A if you have many HDD and ODD and PCI cards. The Corsair VX450(33A) would work, but the VX550(41A) would be better(the TX 650 even better). If you're in the USA, NewEgg has the PC P&C after MIR, mail-in-rebates, competitively priced with the Corsairs.
Now, as long as the failed PSU didn't take out any components, the new PSU should serve you well.

Did you put the videocard in another slot?
Have you tried 1 memory stick next to the CPU?
    Is JPWR1 (CPU power) connected?
I've put the video card in the x16 PCI-E Slot first then I tried in the other one, nothing happened either. Then I tried to unplugged the video card and try to boot with the video card of the motherboard, same problem
Also I tried to use just one memory stick and the JPWR1 is connected.
I'm going to try with a the processor of a friend of mine, an AMD Phenom X4 9550 to discart a Bios update issue.

  • MSI 975X PLATINUM POWER UP EDITION

    today is january 23rd, 2010
i just bought the msi 975x platinum power up edition in new york, from a store that was going out of business, but i am having problems because this does not power on.
i am using brand new and tested functioning: thermaltake tr2 430w psu, intel core 2 duo 2.66GHz fsb 1066, and also tried a celeron d 2.66GHz fsb 533, 1x corsair 1gb stick 800 mhz, nvidia 7 series pci express vga card, connected to a test ctr monitor AOC 5en.
i connected the 24 pin atx main connector, the 8 pin connector that powers on the cpu and also the peripheral connector that powers the pci express, and all i got was the heatsink fan spinning, but nothing appears on my screen (all is black).
i hope somebody can help me, because now the store where i bought it has closed, and i dont know how to get a warranty from MSI since i dont understand their RMA policy.

if it is not sure that after updating bios the motherboard can use some more new cpu`s, then i think it would be a waste of time trying to do a bios upgrade.
I am not sure that I understood what you mean, but it is nothing unusual that an older board/chipset will not support the latest processor models.  And this has nothing to do with the board manufacturer.
    Quote
I only wanted to do that bios upgrade thinking it would be enough to avoid the karma of searching for those listed cpus
What is so hard about digging up a supported processor?  I mean, all you have to do is to decide which model you want to get (an E6600 would be a great choice for this board) and then buy it. You will probably be able to get a great deal on a used one on E-Bay.
This is not a complicated situation.

this is my first msi mobo!!!
... and it has nothing to do with this being an MSI Mainboard.  The only problem is that it is an old mainboard/Chipset and that the latest 45nm processors are too different regarding their specifications to be properly supported.

where can i get a copy of the driver cd utility of this mobo?
i would like to get a copy from the original cd
There was no driver cd included in the mainboard box which you can make a copy off?
You can find all drivers for download on the product site for this mainboard:

  • Msi K9N2 Platinum SLI and Windows Server 2003 r2 32 bit edition

Does anyone know or have tried to get this board to work on server 2003 32 bit edition. I seem to get past the raid part but the realtek 8211bl and audio are giving me fits. Any links to good drivers would be appreciated.
    Spec of system:
    Amd 9950 Quad
    4 gig memory
    Msi K9N2 Platinum SLI
    2 500 gig sata

Ok overall solution this board works awesome with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2 with Sp 2.
Here are a few tricks for the Co processor controller, Sm Bus, Audio and finally the networking controller.
When you finally get windows loaded. Make sure you put Service Pack 2 or 3 on before u install drivers.
The raid drivers are simple for the 32 bit version use the xp ones and load both raid drivers during setup. Requires 2 floppys or Slipstream disk.
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=driverfile&dno=7067&i=2
Once you get windows loaded and Sp 2 or better on. Stick in your windows vista driver disk in. Once there do not install anything.
Goto device manager and update drivers on all that are with the yellow ? excpet the networking drivers and just do an automatic search and boom your done. It will also ask you if you want to enable your audio at this time. Do so but do not reboot untill u finish installing all drivers but networking. Than reboot pc
Last part is for networking card. We need you to be in safe mode for this. So once u install all drivers and start reboot hit F8 and goto safe mode. Once in safe mode take out vista driver disk and put in xp driver disk. Goto device manager and update driver on network controller and let it do an automatic search and it will installl it. It will say it needs to be rebooted to work. Go ahead and reboot and your networking card will work.
Probably simpliar solution. But just wanted to give my help.

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with manufacturer for updates. Try changing video adapters.
Check with your hardware vendor for bios updates. Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing.

  • MSI X58 Platinum - power button after hibernate not working

    Hi,
I have MSI X58 Platinum board that is having a problem recovering from hibernate state.
When I press the power button, it will turn on for about 2 seconds before shutting off again. Nothing is shown on the screen.
After pressing the power button several times more, it will then power up again and wake up from the hibernation. Everything is back to normal after that.
It used to work fine where single press to the power button is all it takes to wake up.
Has anyone experience this problem? It has no problem going to hibernate state (S3).
    Thanks.

    Ok, here's my complete configuration:
    1) Motherboard: MSI X58 Platinum

My main problem is permanent losing of power from mainboard when I shutdown my PC.
I noticed that devices such as Scanner and CardReader turn off, everytime when I shutdown PC, instead of staying in Stand By.
I think that it is not OK and that MSI P965 Platinum mainboard doesn’t work properly?! Also, I can't power on the system with keyboard or mouse,
    even these options exist.
Thank you in advance for your consideration!

    elgasoni,
please allow me to tell you what I know about PC and this power management thingy
    1. no WOL (wake on LAN), no Wake on USB, no Wake on PS2
--> there should be no LED blink on your system while it is OFF, but your power supply still supplying 5V_stby to your board.
    2. with WOL, no Wake on USB/PS2
--> no LED blink on your keyboard/mouse too, but your LAN port may still blink if you hooked your LAN cable up to a powered router. Again, your PSU is only supplying 5V_stby to your board and the LAN is consuming it.
    3. with WOL, with Wake on USB/PS2
--> there may be LED on your keyboard/mouse, depending on your keyboard/mouse design. Your LAN port surely blink as condition stated in (2). Same thing, PSU only supplying 5V_stby.
    4. The "S3" suspend mode.
--> This mode has to be exit from Windows by selecting "standby" and your BIOS must enable it to suspend to S3. The LED will behave the same as in (3), in addition that your RAM is still powered, refreshed to keep its content. If you remove your RAM stick, your system will not be wake up anymore.
--> If you wake up the system, your system will take you directly less than a second to the Windows to the logon screen with your previous sessionis still active in the background.
    5. "S4" hibernate mode.
---> the LED behavior will be like (1), (2) or (3), depending on where you set your system to be.
---> When you wake up the system, it takes a few seconds (could be 10 seconds or more, depending on your RAM size) for your HDD to fetch in the previous RAM image back to your RAM.
So, which behavior you are having right now?
And now, the potential problem --. LED blink, but no wake up event support, LAN, mouse, keyboard all can't wake up the system, but they are still consuming power. Yup, this could be a HARDWARE problem, or could be solved by BIOS.
    Are you having this problem?

  • Power Supply recommendation?

I have noticed from reading some of these posts that 12 volt rail amperage is important to the stability of this board. Even though my system now seems to be stable (after cranking up mem voltage to 2.75), my rated 12 volt amperage is only 18 amps.
What PS do you recommend for my system?   Thank you!

    I sure wish I had a 520W OCZ Powerstream!

In the course of testing for this review, we also stumbled upon another mild surprise. We had been using a major brand 465 watt Power Supply in one of the A64 test beds with the FX53 and an nVidia 6800 Ultra video card. We were experiencing serious problems with video corruption and we were also seeing lower overclocks on memory in the 465 watt machine. We switched to the 520 watt OCZ PowerStream power supply in the problem test bed and found that video corruption disappeared and memory overclocks reached higher levels. Out of curiosity, we switched to the ATI 9800 PRO in the same test bed. We did not experience video corruption with the ATI and the 465W power supply, but memory overclocks were still lower with the 465 than what we could achieve with the PowerStream 520W.
Based on our experience, we would recommend a quality 500 watt+ power supply if you plan to seriously overclock memory on the Socket 939 platform. The difference in performance is substantial, with higher overclocks possible with the larger quality power supply. For that reason, we have updated the specifications of our A64 memory test bed to the 520W OCZ PowerStream.

  • Msi p45 platinum power up problems

Hey guys, i have got a fairly new system i think its about 2 months old
    e8400 e0
    msi p45 platinum bios 1.71beta
    4g kit 1066 kingston hyperx
    palit 1g 4870
    huntkey 650w psu
Okay so heres the deal, the computer was running at 3.6ghz, stable for the past 2 months.
I have tried 4ghz with almost every possible combination of volts, but it passed prime 95 for about 36 hours 1 day, and the next have a random reboot
I also noticed that my psu was making this weird whining noise so i just ordered and installed a pc power and cooling 750w.
To my happyness comp booted up at 4ghz and seemd stable enough for 2 hours. (just searching net and stuff) then boom, comp turns off.
okay so i thought maybe it wasnt stable. tried to reboot but to no avail. all i get is about half a second when my fans try to spin up but then it just cuts off again.
i have tested the usual out of box, 1 stick of mem, clear cmos with power cord removed, removed battery for 10 minutes but nothing. Also did the same with the old psu which was working.
All that happends is it trys to start, eg leds everywhere flicker and i mean flicker there is no way i can see what order. Im refering to the 8 leds down the bottom. the flick on then off.
After trying to start it up once, i wont get another chance to start it. eg i have to remove the power and wait till the power is completly gone from the system b4 i can try again and only have the same thing happen.
    Thanks for your help guys

Something may have been damaged during overclocking.  What voltages did you work on when you overclocked the system to ~4GHZ?  What where your temperatures?

Next, I see that you are using a Beta BIOS, what's the reason behind it?

  • Replacing the MSI Mega 865 Power Supply

Has anyone attempted to replace the power supply on the MSI Mega 865?  Is it ever suggested?
I am currently looking at the following (http://www.tomshardware.com/firstlook/20040720/index.html) as a possibility, but I seem to recall that there is a special connection that is necessary for the HIFI 'always on' functionality.
If you have successfully replaced the power supply, what product did you use?

I want a new power supply for my 651 and after reading these forums I have found out that the only way to get out of the box compatable one is to order from MSI.  Of course it isnt on their online store so I am trying to call the US headquarters and pressing 1 for sales.  I have been trying for DAYS with no luck, always all operators are busy and the 2 times I kept pressing 1 for over an hour when it was finally answered they just hung up without saying a word.  Is there a trick to contacting them or should I be calling someone else?

  • Thermotec Power supply Recommended?

I have been advised by other members to change my 300 Q Tec power supply before the MoBo packs up. I have found  a Thermotec 420W supply for $100 on the local market. (Stuff is expensive here). Has anyone ever heard of Thermotec and can anyone recomend them as being compatible with this P4 motherboard. Also with my setup I think 420W might still be low.

  • Power Supply recommendations

I have a K7n420 board with amd 1700 xp cpu and need to know which power supply will do the trick.  I was looking at the Antec true 430 - at $80 I'm not really looking for anything more expensive so keep the price in mind when letting me know what else I could go for.  I did buy a 300watt no name brand but the top of the case was getting too warm for my liking....Thanks for any response.

I was running a 320 watt power supply, and it worked fine on my machine (no lock ups etc).  YOu can see what I'm running in my signature.  I only upgraded to a antec tru430 because I plan to add a DVD-RW pretty soon.  If you buy an Antec Tru series and don't plan on having a lot of other stuff you will be fine.

  • Usb wiring help....... MSI 975X Platinum Power Up

I have spent all sunday building my lovely new PC using the MSI 975x platinum powerup motherboard (sorry love  ), its up and running but I need advice on how to attach the existing wires that run from my case's front usb slots to the JUSB connectors on the mobo.
The wires from the front of my case are as follows
    1) "1 GND (black)"
    2) "2 GND (orange)"
    3) "3 GND (dark grey/black)"
    4) " 1 VCC (red)"
    5) " 2 VCC (Brown)"
    6) "1.D+ (green)"
    7) "2.D+ (blue)"
    8) "1.D- (white)"
    9) "2.D- (yellow)" .....................can anyone help please........... ps I'm a wiring numpty

It's not that hard, though it's always a problem that the names are different on the pin-layout of the board and the wires from a case... But still, not hard.
If you have your board's manual, you'll find:
    1VCC
    2. VCC
    3. USB0-
    4. USB1-
    5. USB0+
    6. USB1+
    7. GND
    8. GND
    9. key (no pin)
    10 USBOC
Now, it's pretty clear what goes where ... just leave the third ground for what it is. I think it should not be connected. That leaves pin 10 empty. I'm nor 100% sure, but just try it.
