MSI K9N2GM-FD Phenom 2 X6 Support?

Hi hopefully MSI K9N2GM-FD nvidia 8200 chipset has bios update to support X6.
Axxx M3N78-VM has the bios for the upgrade already.

  • MSI K9A2 with Phenom 9500 problems

I've been asking MSI technical support some questions and after a day or two they just delete the post without giving a reason, so this is nagging me now.
Firstly, I've tried BIOS 1.0, 1.1, P0C, P0D and 113 BETA. The latter is the best one and I'm using it right now.
    Problems are many:
    1) Before I have booted up at NB frequency 3.1GHz and P95 4-cores over 1hr20mins no problems and ran over 30 benchmarks. Now suddenly I cannot bootup at even NB frequency above 2GHz.
I've booted over 2GHz NB frequency over 60 times neched/tortured stable on stock volts so that can't be the problem. This messes up overclocking completely.
    2) I have booted up HT reference clocks of 266MHz maximum. No crash. Now I can't even boot up 241MHz
What is happening, is the source code having problems?
    3) Why does AMD OverDrive 2.10 freeze my system if I start it? Why does it suddenly crash my system at stock? Enthusiasts have said its MSI BIOS issue. Whenever I change a single value in there or press "Apply" it will freeze my system. Any fix?
    4) Do you have any BETA BIOSes that I can test or modded BIOS yet? I will test them for you if you want because I'm testing this system now and need them. Yes I know the issues with BETA etc, I'm an ex-programmer.
    5) Why can I not run DDR2-1066 or higher than ratio 1:2? This is so limiting. Why is there no option for tRC higher than 26?
    6) Why can I not run HT from 2GHz-2.6GHz?
    7) Why can I not change CPU VID and if so, why does the system not POST?
    8) Why can I at times bootup 265MHz HT ref., bench it perfect, pass stability testing and at other time randomly the system will not boot up even if 1MHz above 200MHz?  >:(
    8) Why does CPU/HT speed downclock if I set NB speed higher than 2GHz or NB multi higher than 9x?
*** Is there any fix to any of the above? I would like some information as soon as you can please, to know what Phenom performs like to sell it or keep it before Xmas.
Thank you in advance. And FYI yes I know how to overclock using MSR Editor/Memset/AOD/AM2+ P-State Values/WPCREDIT, its dangers, how teh NB/HT/CPU speed and voltages are worked out etc. Mmy system is very well cooled in ambient 2-4C and I've only needed stock volts on everything to get 2904MHz screenable, 2860MHz benchable yet. But suddenly, after flashing this BIOS, things have gotten bad.

    Thanks for the replies.

Increasing the memory controller's operating frequency will increase performance for sure, but having the HyperTransport speed higher than 1GHz is pointless.
Firstly, the HT frequency can never run above the NB frequency on Phenoms. The system will always make sure the NB frequency is higher than the HT frequency. So to get 2GHz-2.6GHz HT, we have to have high NB speed at 2-2.6GHz or above. But I can't increase NB frequency past 2GHz at all. I can't change NB and CPU VID which AMD said should be changeable and allows overclocking properly. They said its a BIOS problem. And having high HT is supported by Phenoms and should be easy. Which means either the BIOS/board is buggy or the CPU is buggy.
    Quote
What other people get doesn't mean you will get the same results; overclocking is a gamble. Give the system some time to breath, run it at stock for a few days, then try overclocking again.
I've had it for 3rd week now and gave it time, first two weeks stock. I think that's long enough. I know it's a gamble, but HT 2.6GHz is not a gamble, it's basic specs it should do with ease. Same with DDR2-1066. The board cannot run anything above  divider 1:2 and HT ref. is stuck at 260MHz for the CPU. Which means I cannot run above DDR2-1040 which is still less than my RAM rated speed. I also cannot run the tRC needed for those speeds. BIOS gives no options for it above 24. AMD said it's the BIOS bug.
    Quote
The default HT 3.0 speed is 3600MT/s which I believe converts to 2600MHz. Try running the HyperTransport @ 2.6GHz so a x13 multi, then run everything else at stock. Try to see if everything clocks correctly and that the system is stable at stock.
    At stock the system runs:
    2200MHz CPU speed
    200MHz HT ref.
    5x 1000MHz HT link
    1800MHz NB speed
I can't do above ~1980 on HT and NB no matter what BIOS/OD setting I choose. Absolutely no way, the system will either not POST or downclock automatically. :(

Have you read about the Phenom's L3 cache bug? Could be a cause of crashes and what not...
Yes. I've been thinking the same thing but how can I be sure if it's the CPU that's buggy?

    Other answers:
    2) Reference clock of 300 here with considerable ease, BIOS 1.0. Might be the cpu that's holding you back...
Yep, it's CPU. My X2 5000 BE can do 400 on the board easy. Maybe more, I've only booted with it 3 times just to check.
    Quote
    7) By CPU VID you mean Vcore? Only CPU voltage setting available in BIOS, works fine here.
CPU VID is the Voltage ID to each individual core. It decides the Amps fed to each core and is locked on some systems and unlcoked on others AFAIK. It's different to VCore.

    *edit*
Seems like this L3 cache bug might cause your Hyper Transport querks:
    Quote
...We tested at a 2.3GHz core clock with a 2.0GHz north bridge clock, because AMD told us those speeds were representative of the Phenom 9600. Our production samples of the Phenom 9500 and 9600, however, have north bridge clocks of 1.8GHz. Because the L3 cache runs at the speed of the north bridge, this clock plays a noteworthy role in overall Phenom performance. We've already confirmed lower scores in some benchmarks...
    Source
Does AMD Overdrive provide you with the option to toggle the bug fix on/off?
Hmm.. it looks like I cannot run anything above 1980 on NB or HT anymore.  NB frequency really does increase perf. I've tested 2GHz-3.1GHz before last week.

  • MSI K9A2 Platinum & Phenom II 955 Compatability

I recently called MSI tech support to see if this processor is compatible with the K9A2 Plat and the 1.7 bios, but they told me they didn't know... The tech support told me to try it, but he cant guarantee stability.. very informative aye? Has anyone tried it to see if it works? Or know if these 2 are compatible as of now?

for anyone wondering about the compatability, i opened a ticket regarding when the next official K9a2 Plat bios were going to be updated to support the  Phenom II 955, here is their response
Thanks for your great support and sorry for the late response!
Regarding your concern,we are sorry to say that this this mainboard has been phased out and we probably will not maintain the newly released CPUs.
    This mainboard has entered the market prior to the presence of Phenom II 955 processor;
But currently we have "790FX-GD70" & "790GX-G65" mainboards that could support the Phenom II 955 processor.
For more details, kindly please refer to following link:

    Thanks & regards,
    MSI Technical Support Team!
Looks like the only way to run the Phenom II 955 on the K9a2 Plat is to run the beta bios....
That info is not exact correct. As you can see the tech guy is guessing as well.
Also its supported already with 1.83.
As i told you in another topic: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=126385.msg953285#msg953285
MSI is working over it to fix few remaining stuffs and will be OK when official 1.8 is out.

  • MSI K9A2 Platinum + Phenom 9600 + 2GB Mushkin XP8500 cannot boot into windows

    Hi!
I am building my computer using the Spider platform and I ran across problems during booting into windows.
I am using MSI K9A2 platinum with Phenom 9600 and Mushkin 2Gb kit XP8500 ddr2 1066. I have no problem installing windows xp.
The problem starts when I install the utility and drivers that come on a cd from MSI, my computer requests to re-boot after installation and after
that it will not boot into windows. I can get to the windows logo and then the system reboots right away.
I checked the bios and it shows that the ram is running at 800mhz and i have tried running with just 1 stick and im getting the same problem every time.
Anyone knows how to resolve this?
    thanks!

Everything is stable now...I guess installing the driver from the MSI website is the best thing to do right now
I notice that my ram is underclocked to 800mhz instead of 1066mhz...I have update the motherboard BIOS to v1.2 and i checked that the ram is running on unganged mode...I tried adjusting the spd to 5-5-4-12 with voltage of 2.2v as suggested by the mushkin ram itself
    Any idea?
"I have update the motherboard BIOS to v1.2 and i checked that the ram is running on unganged mode..."
    That is the correct mode.
"I notice that my ram is underclocked to 800mhz instead of 1066mhz..."
1066 is not officially certified by JEDEC, also your memory probably don't have SPD configuration for that freq.
Contact to Mushkin for more details.
"I guess installing the driver from the MSI website is the best thing to do right now"
    Yep
    "Everything is stable now.."

  • MSI Bluetooth & XP SP2 native bluetooth support

I am getting sick and tired of Widcomm's software stack, my bluetooth device will stop working if the computer has been on for a while, it needs frequent resets, etc.

    Pentest Limited Security Advisory
WIDCOMM Bluetooth Connectivity Software Buffer Overflows
    Advisory Details
Title: WIDCOMM Bluetooth Connectivity Software Buffer Overflows
    Announcement date: 11 August 2004
    Advisory Reference: ptl-2004-03
    CVE Name: CAN-2004-0775
    Products: WIDCOMM Bluetooth Connectivity Software
    Vulnerability Type : Buffer Overflow
    Vendor-URL: http://www.widcomm.com
    Vendor-Status: Fixed in release 3.0
    Remotely Exploitable: Yes

    Advisory URL: http://www.pentest.co.uk/documents/ptl-2004-03.html
    Vulnerability Description
WIDCOMM's products provides a full range of Bluetooth connectivity
solutions for PCs, PDAs, mobile phones, headsets, digital cameras,
access points, and various output devices.
An unauthenticated remote attacker can submit various malformed service
requests via Bluetooth, triggering a buffer overflow and executing
arbitrary code on the vulnerable device.
On Windows platforms this allows arbitrary code execution under the
context of the currently logged on user account.
    Vulnerable Versions
WIDCOMM supply their Bluetooth Communications software to other
companies to allow them to integrate Bluetooth technology into their
devices. They also supply Bluetooth SDK's to enable developers to create
applications that use Bluetooth. Therefore it may not be immediately
apparent that you are using the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software and version
    numbers may vary.

  • AMD Phenom Processor not supported by 2.0 beta

After trying out the slow and very bug ridden 2.0 beta on my old windows XP 32 bit version computer, we decided to try the 64 bit version on my new 64/128 bit computer under XP pro SP2. After a few seconds it decides the "processor is not supported".
This is a AMD Phenom processor with an AMD video card running parallel with the onboard video processor. It is reccommended by AMD for compatability on their website. I have 8 Gigs of ram installed. It should just fly, but won't even finish loading.
Has anyone else gotten this message? Will Adobe support the new AMD graphics processors and CPUs? I really do like some of the things lightroom can do but we need it to run fast and not crash, choke, ect.

Your processor is 64 bit but your OS, if it's XP Pro SP2, is not. You need the 32 bit version.

  • MSI Z68MA-ED55, or Z68 series, support XEON E3 series processor?

    Hello,
does anyone know if the MSI Z68MA-ED55, or any other Z68 series, motherboard supports Intel XEON E3 series, like the E3-1275?
    Cheers

You should look through the product information in MSI website first. If the board supports, then the processor will be listed under their support listings, else it's a no. For more information on any other supporting processors, please contact MSI as per the link given by HU16E.

I didn't know that the intel chips don't support sli, do you know why this is
This is true for all Intel chipset based boards (doesn't matter which brand/manufacturer).  The reason?  Since it was possible to enable SLI on Intel Chipset boards (e.g. 975X) with modded (unofficial) drivers with earlier nVidia cards (6/7 series), there is probably no true technical limitiation.  It is all about marketing/competition if you ask me.

a good mobo for around £100 that does support sli and has similar specs to the p35.
Look for a board with an nVidia P6N or P7N chipset if you really want SLI. The P7N SLI Platinum for example should be in your price range.

After i installed all drivers in the proper order  ,after i assured the RAM is in dual channel ,after i have put the SATA HDD at SATA 1 specs (to make the computer boot up faster ),after i updated to latest BIOS -es ( the video and mobo) ,the computer started to be what it should have been.
Make sure you have good drivers for the SB 600 ( if your HDD is conected to its SATA ports) ,in XP SP 3 you should use older drivers ,that are not available on the MSI website at this moment (there were available somewhere in the 2008 spring-summer).The package available now doesnt have the PATA drivers(IDE emulation) and this may show poor performance for the drive in games(choppyness).
On the other hand the 9550 is inferior, in my opinion ,to a X2 6400+.Sure 6400+ is only dual core ,but there is a lot of software that doesnt know what a quad is.
Also make sure you disable Cool and Quiet in BIOS options and HPET option (recomended OFF for XP) and in On Chip SATA BIOS section under Integrated Peripherals make sure PCI IDE Busmaster option is on (a legacy option that will speed up Windows installation for ex.).
Also a poor PSU with low voltages may lead to same poor performance, check the voltages (with a digital multimeter) and make sure they are in spec.
do u hv any good location for the SB600 that i can download from. all my bio update r from MSI website. C&Q has been disable will look into the rest n let u knw the outcome. thanks

  • MSI P965 Platinum (MS-7238) E7400 support

    Hello,
I have question about compatibility MSI P965 Platinum with new Core 2 Duo E7400 (SLB9Y (R0)). On MSI page is that motherboard supports Yorkfield & Wolfdale processors but E7400 is not in CPU support list. If it is not supported, is there any chance that new bios will be released?
    Thanks

Best thing is to ask MSI about that as we are just users ourselves. You can contact MSI here: http://ocss.msi.com.tw/ (Global technical support)
