MSI KM2M combo won't power on

Last week I bought a KM2M-combo board, an AMD XP 2200 cpu + cooler and 256mb ddr pc400 MDT memory. When I installed it and pressed the power button it didn't boot, I only heard a soft "siren sound" coming from a speaker on the board itself (no display on monitor, no fans spinning). I used both power connectors (the big one, and the small, square shaped one) and used the onboard video output.
I've tried switching the ddr memory to another socket and used SD-ram. I switched PSU's, with these stats:
300W
+12V/15a
+6V/30a
+3.3V/20a
No succes, so I dismounted the board and pulled off all cables, to set it at a minimum (motherboard, cpu+fan, memory and the PSU with above stats). I reseated the CPU and tried using an AGP video card, in stead of the onboard video; same problem.
I've come to a dead end here. Any suggestions?

The ram says: MDT DDR, 256mb PC400 CL2.5 (single-sided). It'll probably be PC3200 memory. But would this matter? Even if it's faster memory than the PC2100 the motherboard supports, wouldn't it just work below it's max speed (in this case at PC2100)?
I also used an old piece of APASS PC100 64mb SD-RAM memory (removed the DDR first of course), I experienced the same problem: it didn't power on.
So I used a piece of memory which is too fast, and one which is slow :P

  • Lower the RAM's Memory Timing to something Less Aggressive...? MSI KM2M Combo-L

(Not sure where would be the best place to post, so this question is posted here and in the BIOS Thread...  If possible, could the Moderators please leave BOTH as to assure a response...  I'd appreciate it...  Thank You..!!!)
    MSI KM2M Combo-L (601-6738-010)
I’m running into some application errors, and the main suggestion is to lower the RAM’s Memory Timing to something Less Aggressive...
The problem with that is I don’t see any option in the MSI KM2M Combo-L Phoenix 6g BIOS...
Basically, I’m trying to “Underclock”...   NOT “Overclock”...
    Any ideas...??
(I tried “searching” the forums, but I’m not finding anything, other than people asking “Why would you want to do that...??”   Those types of responses aren’t very useful...)

    Hi
The KM2M Combo L bios under Dram Clock/Drive Control allows some adjustment of the memory timings.  I suggest that you run it with the Dram Clock set by Spd (default).  If you still have errors, run memtest for a couple of hours to check your memory.

  • MSI-6738 KM2M Combo L CPU power socket (4 wires)

Just a quick question. I just bought this board and it has a 4 wire connector next to the ATX power connector and my power supply does not have the 4 wire cpu power connector. Do I need to buy another power supply, or can I use the existing one and just use the ATX power cable. will this do any damage to the CPU and or power supply.
    Thanks.

i have asked a lot of people and thay have all told me theat you have to have the 4-pin plug conected. but i was faced with the same ishow my psu dosnt have the plug. i didnt have anuff cash at the time to get a new psu so i just pluged then the atx power plug and it has worked fine boots fine and runs stable. then i talked my uncle in to buying then same board and he got a new case wen he got it the psu that came in his case hase the 4-pin power plug so i pluged it in wen i put it together and has workes fine to. so ovisly you dont have to have then plug even thow it is recomended y duse the board have the plug and can or will it hurt my componets if i use the board without it if you have any comenta please e-mail me at [email protected] thnx

  • AGP 8X hack(?) on MSI KM2M Combo board (VIA KM266)

    hi all,
While going my motherboard manual which states that the AGP slot on my MoB is 4x/2x 2.0 i came across the following text under the "BIOS Advanced Chipset Features" section.
    AGPMode:
This option specifies an appropriate mode for the installed AGP card. Setting options: 1X, 2X, 4X. When 8X AGP card is installed onboard with its driver correctly installed and setup, the AGP card will automatically run at 8x speed and users will not be able to see the AGP Mode setting.
Does this mean that i can upgrade to a 8X AGP card and then be able to run it at 8X too ? Has anyone tried this before ?
This could mean that i would be able to run Doom3 after only a simple AGP upgrade !! (and perhaps a RAM upgrade too)

found this useful link on MSI's site for MS-6738 MoBo:
tests with various PCI and AGP VGA cards
So i guess i can go ahead and upgrade to a cool ATI or nVidia 8x card without much worries... (offtopic: anyone knows wats the 'best value' solution for Doom3 ?)
maybe i will check up my power-supply also.. just to be sure it can handle the extra load... loads of info on that in this forum.
Is anyone running Doom3 successfully with a similar config ?
    thanks a ton ppl.

  • MSI 850 Pro2 won't power on in the case

I am having a really irritating problem  . The motherboard powers on and successfully POSTs when out of the case with only RAM, HDD, CPU, CPU fan, and video however when I put it in the case it will not POST and the fans sping for a few seconds only. At that point I was sure that it was a issue with the mothboard grounding to the case so I put non-conductive insulation all behind the board and put non-conductive washers on the front and back of all the posts holding the board in but still same result. At this point the only thing from the motherboard that is touching the case is the Serial/USB/ect. connectors. I also tried starting it without the video in the case thinking it was something there but same result. Just to make things more interesting, if I unplug the 4 PIN 12V JWR1 connector it powers on, POSTS, and even completly boots up . Its been running for a day or so like this. I also went over the PSU ratings for amperage and it is all suffecient, 420W, 18A +12V, ect I can post the rest from home later if anything thinks that its the PSU not being big enough but the case and the PSU are both brand new. I would try another PSU but I don't have one available, wanted to get some advice before running off to return it. I also tested the voltage of the outputs and they were all within range when not connected.
So I have two questions. First does anyone have any other idea as to what the problem might be?
Second, does anyone have any idea whether I can successfully run without the 4 PIN 12V supply or have any way to test it? Its run like this for 2 days, I installed Windows, drivers, and pretty much everything with no problems. I am just wondering if I will start to have issues under load like when playing a high end game or something. I should add that I checked the motherboard manual and it wasn't completely clear on whether the JWR1 connection was required. It says "Attaching the ATX power supply to the connector help offer sufficient
voltage to Pentium 4 CPU". Doesn't really say its definately required.

Make sure there are no extra spacers under the board.
Having one of those in a location where there is no matching hole in the MB will short out the board.
That is probably what Danny ment, but "screw" is a little confusing I think

  • MSI P35 Platinum - won't power up.

I am building a new system. Setting it up in a case with some memory and a video card I could not get it to power up. No fans, no beeps. Just a solitary red LED.
I have now assembled - out of the case - what I believe is the absolute minimum setup that should at least give me some diagnostic LEDs: the PSU, the mainboard, the processor and its supplied fan. I have attached one of the molex leads from the PSU to a case fan to indicate if the PSU is supplying power.
Plugging the 24 pin connector from the PSU into a tester shows that it is working fine, the 12v ATX connector is working fine and the PCI molex is working fine. My case fan also whirrs around.
Plugging the 24 pin connector from the PSU into the board, along with the 12v ATX connector and the PCI molex I can get no further than the single red LED. No CPU fan, no beeps. Not even a whirring case fan.
Would removing the processor and repeating the process give me anything?
Do I actually need to put in a video card and some memory?
Or have I got a DOA board?

Everything should be in, except the connectors from the chassis, so everything has to be out of the case.
There's risk if you don't do it properly, so try only if you are prepared for it.
1st, you connect everything, including the PSU to the mainboard. Use some wires to form a manual switch, be careful of exposed metal areas as I do not want you to get electrocuted. Once this is done, push one end of the switch that you made to pin 13 and the other end to pin 14 (If you find that they are too near, you can also try pin 14 and any pin that is with the Ground - Black wire). Switch on the PSU and you should see your motherboard jump start by itself without any other intervention needed.
From here, you can determine if the board is booting properly by connecting to the Monitor, keyboard and mouse.

  • MSI-KM2M Combo-L (6738) Ram Question

Can this motherboard support pc2700 ram.  Everywhere I go I see that people use PC2100 even when trying to buy some that's what they show will work on this motherboard.  In the booklet though it says it can support pc2700, but I have been having problems with it.  I have two 512MB Sticks PC2700 333, they each work fine by themselves and each of the two ddr slots are good.  I am running windows xp and everytime I turn on the comp with both in, it will start up and then before it goes to the desktop it will restart.  Sometimes it says I am missing a config file in windows32.  I know that you have to update your bios for winx9 and winME, but I am using xp and it should be able to support both of them.  I do not know if this board has problems with pc2700.  Any help would be apprieciated.

I find the same problem with 2 512MB DDR DIMMS.   Seems to hang in NT and blue screen.  Don't know what that guy is talking about voltage settings in bios when my bios has no such settings to adjust DDR voltage.
Very odd problem.  If I put SDRAM in the motherboard it works fine.  But not 2 512MD ddrs?  Go figure.  Anyone know the answer to this?  Is this a bios bug?

  • MSI KM2M over-volting CPU??

i have an MSI KM2M Combo-L (MS-6738), and an athlon XP 1700+ (T-bred b, 1.6v version).. however in the bios (which i have updated to v1.4, but the same occured when it was the older version too) it states the CPU voltage is around 1.85v.. and in windows, CPU-Z and SpeedFan show similarly that the voltage varies between 1.85v and 1.9v..
i have also tried doing a wire-trick to lower the voltage but that doesn't seem to change it?.. (i have been able to adjust the multiplier using the same method so it obviously should be working..)
hmm, so, any way i can sort this? [are there any unofficial bioses for the board?]
1.85v-1.9v is a little toastier than i would like.. well, a lot too high.

hey tcsenter.. ur on anandtech right.. u were pretty influential in my choice to get this board mate lol..
Was that in one of the many topics on "motherboards with SDR + DDR slots" in the Motherboards forum?  I had a list of available motherboards featuring both SDR + DDR slots and an AGP slot.
Pretty soon, I will be compiling a list of motherboards with DDR1 + DDR2 and AGP + PCI-E.  I don't think there are any as of this writing.  I've seen motherboards with DDR1 + DDR2, or AGP + PCI-E, but not the whole ball of wax.
I don't know what to tell you about the processor except to test it in a different motherboard that has voltage health monitoring to see if it is actually requesting this voltage or your motherboard is at fault.
Or look on the bright side, you can overclock it much more easy this way, just get a good copper CPU cooler.

  • Km2m Combo-L - powers up - but nothing on screen

My father has just bought a new MoBo. The system powers up - and you hear the ram counting up - but there is nothing on the screen and the keyboard is also not working (apart from the small flash in the lights when the computer is turned on).
We have remembered to connect the 12V 4-Pin too - and also checked with both connecting the monitor to the onboard-VGA and to a GeForce 4-card.
I list the components we've used - I susspect after reading some of the other postings here that the weakness might be the powersupply (eventhough its brandnew and 400W) - but since I cant seem to find any precise specs on this I prefer to ask before running to the stores buying and buying a new powersupply.
But please keep an open mind and come with any suggestions you think might help.

See troubleshooter by Bas up above. That is, the troubleshooter is up above.
Another possible reason is IDE settings. The HDD should be on IDE slot 1 at the end of the cable. First time I suggest no other IDE devices.
Codegen, the PSU, was in another thread compared to the infamous Qtech, which must stand for questionable technology.

  • KM2M Combo-L SKT A - Shutting Down!!!!

    Hi guys
I built this system a few weeks ago for a mate, first time with MSI. All came together and fired up no problem. However it keeps shutting down. Like…OFF, no warning, no blue screen, no “Windows has recovered….” and nothing written to the error log. Like pressing the reset switch. Then it boots back up and carries on. Does this randomly, can be 3 times in an hour or once a day.
All the drivers and updates are right up to date, it runs at 45 – 48 degrees.

    OK changed the RAM.
    Still the same ;(
Checked the HDD with a tool downloaded from Maxtor, it passed everything.
I have downgraded the hardware acceleration for the graphics (2 notches) and it seems better.
I switched off the reboot to see if an error message would appear and one eventually did (when it didn't just freeze) it said something like the error was caused by win32.sys and a paged error in a non paged area?
I tried updating the video driver but  have the latest (came with board) does it seem the most likely culprit?

    Frontech 300 Watts SMPS (3.3V 14A; 5V 30A; 12V 12A)
Needs to have at least 25A @ 3.3V, and over 18A @ 12V to be on the safe side.
Otherwise, there should be no problems running that VGA card.
