MSI KT4AV-L w/ Radeon 9800 Pro at 8x Lockups!

I have the latest 4 in 1 drivers, and the latest Catalyst drivers and it seems that whenever I try running 3DMark2001SE it locks up almost immediately.   Now if I use SmartGART to lower my AGP from 8x to 4x it runs flawlessly.  Though I can't help feeling that there is some sluggishness in the video.  I actually think that my old 4x GeForce 3 Ti500 ran smoother! (I had that on a Soyo Dragon Plus motherboard)
System configuration:

Not a good way to get help.
Welcome to the world of "new" technology, it takes a little time to get it perfected. As mentioned earlier in the thread, 8X has no perfomance advantage over 4X, and 8X is causing problems, that disappear by using 4X. Until ATI and/or VIA can develop a cure, you have 2 choices:
1. Run 8X mode, and live with the problems.
2. Run 4X mode, and have no problems, and no loss in performance.

  • [Athlon64] MSI K8T NEO-V : incompatibility with ATI RADEON 9800 PRO

    Hi,
I read all the subjets on this forum about Radeon problems with MSI K8T NEO motherboard.  Most of the peple can't use their graphic card in all situations.
    My PC is :
    -MSI K8T NEO-V
    -AMD-64 3200
    -Power : 400W
    -ATI RADEON 9800 PRO
-1 Go DDRAM (2x512 in single channel)
    -Hercules Digifires 7.1
    I bought a new MSI K8T NEO-V with AMD 64.
The problem is that I can't use the computer in the games with AGP 8X even if I try to enable-disable all the options possibles in BIOS and Windows (fast write ...) : The computer freeze (screen disapear as if there was no video signal), reboot or return to Windows disabling the accelerated mode.
But in AGP 4X, all the game run without problem with all setups of BIOS !!!
I tried all the drivers (the new and the old drivers).  Even if all are updated, it freeze.
There are no BIOS update for my motherboard. I saw that some people had BIOS update for compatibility with some Radeon cards ...
So, I don't know how to repair the problem because AGP 8X is AGP 8X and not 4X, and my Radeon run fine on other computer, and nothing say that Radeon 9800 pro don't run on this motherboard.
Does someone have the solution to make it work ? Does a new BIOS or driver update exist somewhere for Radeon cards ?

What Bas said about 30+ amps on the 12v rail does have merit. Even if you don't use it now there may come a time when you want to upgrade the system and certainly you won't want to buy yet another PSU then. A High end vid card now takes almost as much as the CPU to operate. Now days the 12v rail is the most important. Past systems regulated everything off the 5v railk and 12v was used mostly for powering drive motors. Now though the MB's use the 12v line to regulate all the voltages for the CPU, Chipset and other features as does the Vid cards. 3.3 volt lines are used for memory so we hardly use any 5v nowdays.
You have an older viod card and that does not eat much 12v but if you upgrade the most likely peice will be the vid card. You could go through this whole thing all over again if you are not careful to plan for that now with a new PSU purchase.
If the computer shop gives you a bunch of bull about power needs havbe them stop by the forum and we can help set them straight on this. There is more than enough data from MSI and historical data here that suggests that 16a on the 12v rail is certainly not enough. Hey I am not trying to sell you anything. I am just trying to help you get it right. The computer shop is the one trying to sell you something we just feel they are selling the wrong junk.

  • Radeon 9800 pro and memory problem

Hey i was wondering if someone could help me. I have a kt4av-l board. I just put in a radeon 9800 pro and When i play some games im getting crappy fps i updated the chipset drivers and the card drivers but still no help i have a 2400+ processor. also I bought a stick of ddr 2700 1 gig and for some reason i can't use the ram get alot of errors with it. i have two sticks of ddr 400 in there now 2 different brands and sizes and that runs fine but when i put that other stick in there by itself it doesn't work.

    Hello,
It could be a weak power supply, have a look on your power supply's sticker for the following
    eg
    400w
    +12v = 13a
    +5v = 40a
    +3.3v = 28a
The new stick may actually be faulty.
    http://www.memtest.org/download/1.51/memtest86+-1.51.floppy.zip
Here is a program to test the memory.
Try increasing the voltage to 2.7v and set the frequency to match the CPU FSB. (133Mhz)
Is the CPU running at 2Ghz?
Sometimes when you buy a new video card the previous cards driver may conflict with the new one.
    Try a reinstall of windows.
Also did you plug a power connector into the 9800pro?
Are you using any ATi drivers?
Your board may need a bios update to fix a 9800 compatibility issue.

  • Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb troubles :\

    Hey,
I'm not used to post things on a forum but now I'm getting quite desperate. I've been searching and surfing the net for possible solutions but none worked until now.
Sometimes my v-card's drivers hang, or that's what I think. The image freezes, but the mouse can keep on moving (nothing will react anymore and even when I'm typing this, it happened already 1 times). After that "freeze" of about 2-3 seconds, the screen will "click" like you hear when you change resolution in the display properties. After that, the screen comes back and most of the time, everything is ok, except from the fact that sometimes a window like this (mozilla) is resized to 800*600 or 640*480 size .. (not sure)
But sometimes, the screen goes black after clicking and will never come back, only a reset can help this situation.
And sometimes (rare) the screen begins to show artifacts on the screen (not in games, just windows) and this gets worse and worse until you can't see  and have to reset.
When anything of this happens during a game, a recover doesn't seem to be possible at all.
     -> this suggests it's a driver problem...
Now I've read about fastwrites (not available in current bios - but i heard it's available in the new bios which i didn't upgrade yet because i'm a bit afraid of the procedure as I don't have a FAT system nor a win98/ME boot disk and I'm using winXP pro) which I disabled in the catalyst drivers
I've tried to lower the AGP acceleration
    I've tried Omega drivers
I've turned on and off the VPU recover
I've checked my PSU - even disconnected everything but v-card, hdd and nic and my PSU (Antec case) can give 16A/28A/35A in 12v/5v/3.33v rails...
A clean install of windows won't help
    Direct X version doesn't matter
And all starts after the first catalyst driver installation after the fresh windows install.
    Please help,
If you think there's some info missing, don't hesitate to ask, I'm an experience PC user so you can ask me pretty much everything about anything (I think) and I'll followup this post frequently. Anything that can help me find the cause will be appreciated. Until now I didn't want to return the card under warranty because I know I'll have to miss it quite some time then. :(
    PC spec:
    MSI 6547 (Sis645) Mobo
    P4 1.6A (OC'ed or not, doesn't change anything)
    Hercules Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
    Windows XP Pro - SP1

i read that the bios update adds the "enable fast write" function, but at what value is it whitout the update ?
if it's enabled by default, then it could be the problem
but i'll look into the site you gave and try to flash the bios tomorrow
i'll post the results and try the card in another pc if it didn't work :\

  • Sapphire Radeon 9800 PRO, 256 MB using ZALMAN VGA COOLER ZM80C-HP with

    Hi, I need some help...
I own a MSI 875P NEO FIS2R  Mainboard and Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800 PRO 256 MB VGA card...
Meanwhile Sapphire released the same VGA card just like above mentioned but then equipped it with the ZALMAN Heatpipe VGA Cooler, type ZM80C-HP and called that videocard Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800 PRO 256 MB ULTIMATE
I know the same separate ZALMAN VGA Cooler is available in the shops here since a few days and that I can equip my 9800 PRO too with that Cooler but I really don't know if the videocard plus the zalman cooler will fit on my 875P Neo FIS2R mainboard... Cuz of the little space between the AGP slot and the Canterwood Bridge (North Bridge)...  ?(
Anyone know if it's possible to do this/how to arrange this???  :(
    Thanx in advance...  :D

It will fit. But why replace the original heatsink? It works ok without the fan. Take a look here

  • MEGA180 - Samsung Drive & Radeon 9800 Pro

Hi all, new here and i'm just so glad at the moment that i've found the place. Really impressed with the MEGA180, I aren't using all it's functionality, pretty much just as a PC and every now and then as a HIFI, my story so far...
I bought a Samsung DVD-RW which was incompatible with the system, i've posted in the optical drive compatibility list thread to warn others and have now gone for a NEC drive instead, seems to be fine so far, fingers crossed.
I was initially perplexed as to why people are having trouble with temps as mine was running seriously cool, however things have now changed, I have gambled a little and bought myself a Radeon 9800 Pro (MSI just to help a bit), I wasn't expecting it to work to be honest as it recommends a 300 watt power supply but all is fine, no crashes and the games are now running at anything between 1024-768 and 1280-1024 with all eye candy turned on and look great :-)
but, the temp has understandably gone through the roof, I have seen the thread for lowering temps and it's my project for the coming weekend, anything I learn or can pass on I will but at the moment you guys look like you have virtually everything covered,
    many thanks,
    J.

    Hi-
You can use the 9800 Pro in the MDD if you tape pins #3 and #11.
As for using the Zalman (or other cooler), the memory problem can be solved by using 1GB DIMMs, which would allow for up to two open slots.
Clearance of the optical drive is another issue.
If is just the EFI shield that is in the way, removing it can give a few more mm's of space.
Other drive brands are also shorter, so changing the optical drive out may be an option.
Otherwise, changing the cooler for a lower profile cooler is about all that you can do. At a minimum, reinstalling an OEM fan will give all the clearance that you need.
This Vantec is slightly smaller than the Zalman, and may be a better option:

This Vantec is very small, but better than the OEM cooler:

  • 875P INF Drivers and Radeon 9800 Pro All in Wonder

Please help; I am at my absolute wits end.  I will try to be brief but I doubt that there is much chance that it will be.  Basically I have narrowed things down to this.  My video card is a Radeon 9800 Pro All in Wonder 128mb version.  My motherboard is a MSI 875p.  Lately I realized (long story not important) that I did not have the inf drivers from intel installed for my mobo.  This seemed to make sense as to why I was having display issues in games; IE Morrowind.  So I installed them, and when I rebooted I was pleasantly surprised to find that the monitor would simply turn off right before I could get to the login.  Now I have reinstalled windows several times and installed several different combinations of intel inf updates with different version of the Catalyst drivers.  Pretty much, if I have the INF drivers installed, I will not be able to get into windows.  However, if I don't have them installed (like right now) normal things, like typing this message, I can do, but I can't play any games   .  From what I have read I am thinking that it is one of a few things.  A, it has something to do with the AGP driver/ and voltage setting things.  Many people were talking about issues like this with the 9600, and 9800 pro (not all in wonder).  So there might be some bios settings that would help; though I have no knowledge of how such things work. B, is that the card is just a dud and I should just give it up and try to send it back in.  I am afraid of option B mainly because I know it will take forever, and then I have no comp, and because of dreaded option C.  The motherboard is simply incompatabile with the Radeon 9800 Pro All in Wonder 128mb version.  Please let me know if anyone has had similiar problems, if I am up a creek, or how to set the bios...  Here is my system specs; I will check back to see if I need to add anything.  Thanks a bunch.

Radeon 9800 Pro All in Wonder 128mb
    Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Antec Performance Plus SOHO File Server Case ATX12V
(There doesn't seem to be anything in the Bios updates that will help me luckily, because I want to avoid flashing it if I can.)

Okay, I will try to answer any questions as they came.  First off, Windows XP Professional is what I have.  I tried to install the video drivers with both the inf update from intel, and the one from MSI installed.  Again it crashes at login screen with any sort of inf update (ie agp drivers) installed.  Radeon is running at 4x with fast writes disabled, however there is one interesting thing I learned Another thing to note about the problem is when I got to the ATI SMARTGART advanced settings little program (within the ati folder under program files) I can see that PCI write, and read are both on, and AGP read and write are both off. I am not a genius in relation to computers, but how could this card be acting as a PCI card, when it is installed in a AGP slot?  Is this because since I don't have the inf update installed, so as far as the computer knows that agp slot is a PCI one? A further thing to note is that whenever I install the video card driver for my All in Wonder 9800 Pro, is that it installs two cards from what device manager shows. One is "ALL-IN-WONDER 9800 SERIES" the other is ALL-IN-WONDER 9800 SERIES - Secondary". According to device manager they are both located on PCI Bus 1, device 0. Disabling one or the other does not seem to make difference. A final thing to note is that I took an All in Wonder 9000 out of a friends comp and put it into my with the inf update installed; it booted windows and detected it fine. Does this mean my card is a dud and needs to be sent in for repairs, or is there some kind of voltage issue?  As for other PCI cards, I have a modem that is not even installed at:
PCI Slot 2 (PCI bus 3, device 1, function 0)
Sound card at PCI Slot 3 (PCI bus 3, device 2, function 0)
Again Video Card (PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0)
The onboard Gigabit Ethernet is at (PCI bus 2, device 1, function 0)
Another thing that might help clue someone in is that I have
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
    Listed 5 times; IRQ's are 23, 16, 19, 18, 16
The IRQ of my All-In-Wonder is also 16 if this means anything. No conflicts listed of course.  Another note is that my onboard ethernet's irq is 18, same as one of the usb host controllers, and it works fine...
I can't think of anything else to add, let me know what you think.  Thanks a ton so far guys.

  • Radeon 9800 pro too hot

I am running a radeon 9800 pro on my msi board and even tho i am not running games, it gets too hot to the touch. I have 7 case fans, power supply fans, cpu fan and video card fan. I am running latest catalyst drivers and read that they can make the card run hot, has anyone confirmed this? how do I check the temp of my video card?

If you have artifacts it will be to hot, otherwise it's OK.
7 casefans is overkill btw. I have 1 80mil fan that keeps my case below 35C eventhough my computer is stressed all the time.
IF you want to make it really cool, get this cooler: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=41
It blows the hot ait out of the case in stead of circulating it a bit below the vid.card.

  • Radeon 9800 Pro overheating?

I have the K8T Neo2-FIR.  Just was wondering if anyone else had noticed an "artifact" drawing and then shutdown of Windows when using a Radeon 9800?  I believe this is an indication of overheating of the graphics card?
If anyone else has experienced this, please let me know what options I have.  I have been told to try the Artic VGA Silencer (?), and some people at work told me to just get a cheapo PCI dual-fan card.
    Setup:
I have a pretty nice Antec case that supposed to have a nice PSU, somewhere over 400W.  I currently only have the two exhaust fans on the back, and an intake fan on the side (with spots to add an additional two intake(?) fans on the front, which I'll probably do at some point).  I notice that at the BIOS the 12V reading seems a little low, at 11.3ish, but was assured by MSI tech that this was within the OK parameters.  Any thoughts on this contributing to my problem?  What should be the normal/average VCore and voltage readings with AMD64 3500+, Radeon 9800 Pro, 2 512 DIMMs of Kingston RAM (1GB total), SATA HD, DVD-burner, and an Audigy card?

I am having problems with my current system. I just purchased new mem, mb/proc, vid and for some reason the machine doesn't post.
ATI wants to push this off to MSI since the card posts in another machine and they have gone down a few different troubleshooting methods.
HOWEVER when I put my Nvidia 4600ti back in the machine it works fine.
Here is a laundry list of things I have tried and my machine specs.
    1. Unplugged all other devices from the power supply except the graphics card and floppy drive. Still no post.
    2. The 9800 Pro did post in another machine at BestBuy.
    3. Cleared the CMOS settings.
    4. Swapped out the power supply with a new 430w Antec
    5. Reseated video card a number of times.
    6. Checked power connector to Video Card.

Well I did not have the exact same problem as you but perhaps I can help with my experience.
I have the 875p neo and I had a Geforce 4 ti4200 installed everything was working fine with performance set to fast in the bios. I bought an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro. Once installed the system would lock up within one minute of booting to windows XP. The solution for me was to set performance mode in the bios to Slow this is the only way I could get stability out of the system with the 9500 Pro.
    Try the following.
Using the geforce card enter the bios. If there are any performance mode settings (that military rank thingy) at all set them to the slowest settings before switching cards to the Radeon. Try the Radeon again. If you can get it to post then you can try tweaking to higher performance settings till you hit the sweet spot for your configuration.
You might also try setting ram voltage to 1.65 and AGP voltage to 1.55 Slowly increment up on the voltages if no joy.
Post again if still no joy.
    Polecat out

  • Radeon 9800 pro 256mb hanging on blue screen

I'm deep in the waters of frustration right now, and am hoping someone here might have the answer.
About 3 months ago I was looking for a video card for me to run motion. I saw the 9800 mac special edition with 128mb video ram had rave reviews. At that time ATI was not making them. So I turned to eBay...
I purchased a card that was advertised as a Mac 9800 pro special editing 128mb. I later found out it was a flashed pc card. The ebay seller told me the card worked fine on all his mac's that he tested it on.
The problem I was having was the machine boots up, I see the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel. I see the blue screen where normally I see the login progress bar loading the OS. But with this card I only see the blue screen. I hear the hard drive churning, so I am assuming it is still loading the OS, but I cannot see anything. I can reboot in safe mode and the video card works fine.
Well... I assumed it was the fault of the card and that it was flashed. I returned the card to the ebay seller, who sent me another one, same results with that one. I returned the card to the seller and he refunded my money.
I put the money toward the just released Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition 256mb card. I just got it a couple days ago and am experiencing the same problems. I have tried everything... everything I know and still can't get the card to work? Here is a list of what I have done:
    With the flashed card:
    1. Shut off computer and unplugged it. Removed OEM video card and installed ATI 9800 card. Plugged the power supply cable for the card into the computer power supply cable and hard drive.
Problem Occurs: When starting up, the grey screen comes up with the Apple on it, then the screen turns blue, where I typically would see the progress bar of the system loaded up before the user login screen. I only see a blue screen at this point but can hear the hard drive working for about a min.
    2. Restarted the computer in safe mode.
    3. Logged in as Admin user and opened the ATI preference pane to verify it sees the card.
When the ATI preference pane was loaded the following error message occured:
    A startup problem has occured.
Cannot connect to ATI TVOut Kernal Extension. Some features are not available.
Clicked OK and the ATI preference pane appears.
    4. Close the preference pane and reinstalled ATI Displays 4.5.6. Restarted computer.

    5. Restarted computer holding down AppleOption+PR to clear PRAM. Cleared the PRAM 4 times in a row, by allowing the chime to happen 4 times.

    6. Shut computer down. Disconnected the DVI plug for the cinema display and connected a VGA CRT monitor. Started computer.
    Problem Occurs
    7. Shut computer down, disconnected the VGA CRT monitor. Reconnected DVI plug and restarted computer.

    8. Started the computer in safe mode. Logged into admin account. Opened the ATI Preference pane.
When the ATI preference pane was loaded the following error message occured:

    Help?

I get dizzy just thinking about it.
I have tried installed a brand new OS, 3 different times on a different Hard Drive, still the card doesn't work.
I had one person suggest that it may be the card is not communicating with the OS Window Drawing module? (excuse my ignorance of what that is really called. I just know there is some program, possibly in the kernel, that is responsible for drawing out the OS windows.)
How can we rule out that it is a bad AGP slot?
•The slot works fine with my 9000.
•It works in safe mode with the 9800.
•I have installed a brand new OS, three different times, still doesn't work.
•I have used Apple Hardware test to test my hardware, the AGP slot didn't report any problems.
I am assuming that the AGP slot is working. Although I worry about it a bit, because by now I have swapped cards in it about 50 times in my troubleshooting.
Here is a link to a complete list of everything I have tried:

  • S-Video not working on ATI Radeon 9800 Pro????

I've had this ATI Radeon 9800 Pro in my MDD dual 1.25 G4 for a little while with two VGA monitors. I recently got rid of the secondary monitor and moved a 27" flat screen tube TV next to the computer. As I always do, I've got to start tinkering. I remembered that my Radeon has both VGA, DVI, and an S-Video outputs. I simply ran an S-Video from the card to the TV. I can't seem to get it to work. I had never used the ATI control panels so I went ahead and downloaded and installed it. It won't "detect" the TV in the Mac2TV control. What the heck am I doing wrong???? I emailed ATI and they just sent me a form reply to a dead link saying that my system is unstable. UGH!
    Any tips would be great.
    Thanks much,
    Robert

Well, I figured out that if I reboot and only have the s-video attached and no monitors to the VGA or DVI it will work. It dedicates the TV as the primary screen. However, not the best picture. I can't find any information if both the s-video and VGA or DVI can operate at the same time. I'm also doing a little more research with ATI to see if they actually have a true component output from either the VGA or DVI. I had bought a DVI to what I thought was supposed to be component but it was actually RGB component and just gave a distorted image. If I can get that to work, I think it would be a better image along with being able to run both the monitor and the TV as the secondary.
