MSI KT4V-L & Athlon XP 2600+ Barton
Hi all,
I just upgraded my Athlon XP 2000+ to a Athlon XP 2600+ Barton and i have noticed a problem.
After putting the new CPU on the mobo and a new HS&Fan *Volcano 7+* then flashign the bios, i have had 2 weird reboots.
I had a error once when playing the UT2004 Demo on the 2000+ but i also get errors every now and again witht he 2600+ but thats no big problem its a beta demo so you might expect it but the last error i got said some info as the others did then when i hit ok the pc rebooted.
Also earlyer i went away from the pc then came back and it had rebooted itself again im not sure if this was a power cut or somethin so i am just checking if there any any known problems with the MSI KT4V-L and the AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton.
System specs are as follows:
Windows XP /SP1
Latest Drivers
AMD Athlon XP 2600+
MSI KT4V-L
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 265MB
1GB DDR 400Mhz
550W PSU
AMD Athlon XP 2600+
MSI KT4V-L
NVIDIA Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 265MB
1GB DDR 400Mhz
550W PSU
This is what you list for your system. You also admitted the PSU is a Q-Tec, and have been shown the warning about Q-Tec being very low quality.
1. The 2600 is going to use more power than the 2000.
2. The GeForce FX 5900 uses a lot of power.
3. 1GD Ram uses a lot of power.
You have not listed how many drives you have in your system, but there must be at least 2 (1 HDD & 1 CD) those also use power.
The error message is pointing to a video driver as the culprit, but I am willing to bet it is actually caused from the video card's inability to operate due to low power.
I would try borrowing a better quality PSU, and testing with that, and chances are the problem will disappear.

O/cing athlon xp 2600+ (barton)
I am planning on o/cing my athlon xp 2600+ but O.o if i select 14/15x multiplier in bios i get 4/5 O.o btw im still using a stock cooler so untill i get my coolmaster jet 7 it doesnt really matter though ^_^ btw y does my pc stop booting after i raise fsb over 179 well i think i fixed my blue screen erros by raising core to 1.675V but its not reallly stable its changing between 1.7 and 1.675 so should i worrie about that or not?? thx for the help already.
CPU temp while browsing and playing songs 50C in corecenter so -3 =47C
sys temp 35-36C stock cooler O.o 1 sidepanel fanhi im new here so take it easy on me ok?
i was also thinking to OC my CPU but i dont have a clue where to start.
my setup:
AMD Athlon XP 2600+ ( Barton core 333fsb ) cooler: zalman 6000 copper
KT6 Delta LSR
Twinmos DDR 512mb X1 pc400
powersupply: Enermax model:EG365P-VE
+3.3v = 32A
+5v = 32A
+12v = 26A
GraphicCard: Nvidia GeForce4 TI 4200 AGP 8X 128mb DDR
my HDD is a Maxtor 80GB 8mb cache S-ATA 150, including 1X 80GB maxtor 2mb cache ATA 133 and a Maxtor 40GB 2mb cache ATA 133 ( if this matter at all )
and im running this all on WinXP home Edition.
ok, im using this centrecore feature and it tells me that my CPU runs at 100Mhz FSB and the multiplier is 11.5.
my Vcore voltage is 1.66.
my 3.3 voltage is skipping between 3.38 ~3.41.
my 5 voltage is 5.05
and my 12 voltage is 11.76
now i dont really want to push my CPU to the limit but it would be nice that i could ACTUALLY use the 2600+ instead of 1150.
if i can clock my CPU to 2000 safely and runs stable then its ok, that would be worth the money i invested in the CPU.
thanx in advance -
MSI Ti4800SE and MSI KT4V motherboard incompatible?
Yesterday I bought an MSI Ti4800SE to replace a GeForce2. It booted up fine and Windows detected it and installed the drivers. However, on rebooting, the monitor went blank and there was a series of beeps.
The computer would not start. I tried taking out all the other cards and tried the video card in 2 other computers but all I got was the beeps. I took the card back and got a refund as they had no more in stock.
Is the video card incompatible with the motherboard for some reason? Did I somehow cause the card to die? Should I buy another or will the same thing happen again?
Any help would be much appreciated.
My system is
MSI KT4V motherboard
Athlon 2500
512Mb Kingston RAM
SB Live
Network card
56k Modem
2 hard drives
DVD ROM
Mitsumi CD writer
350W PSU
Windows 98SE
Thanks in advanceThanks very much for your advice - looks like I need to spend yet more money then!
But do you think I damaged the card by not supplying enough current, bearing in mind that it booted OK the first time? Or was it not damaged at all? -
K7n2 delta2-fsr and 2600+ Barton o/c problem!
Hi my system consist's of :
Athlon xp 2600+ Barton
k7n2 delta2-fsr ( B3 bios)
2*256 Twin Mos cl 2.5 Dual channel
GForce4 MX 440
ASUS 300w (+3.3V-> 28A, +5V -> 30A, +12V -> 18A)
The problem is that i can't go stable above 178 FSB whatever the Vcore is!
The cpu temperature seems to be low enough ( 38 idle)
With my previous mb i had reached easy 192 with the same processor.
The DOT is disabled!
Any ideas?Quote from: BOSSKILLER on 27-January-06, 20:01:25
enable acpi.
set dot to default
set nvmm enabled
set fsb:ram 1:1
agp to 68mhz
nv/ati speedup leave auto
cpu interface set to normal
give nesesery CPU Vcore...
set DIMM Vcore at minimum 2.70
leave memory timmings to optimised if you dont know what to set.
start from memtest86 to be sure its memory probs. make sure there is no errors at test number five.
start increase DIMM Vcore if errors is detected till 3.0V its safe mobo is dimm is undervolted after 2.9V isnt give actual core what is suppose to be. let we know how its going.
make sure 1st that you dont have any memory fabric malfuction. this can be done by testing one stick then test other stick with memtest86.
at all i think that your CPU want more Vcore to be stable when you change FSB to higher. set CPU Vcore to 1.85V to be sure.(standart cooler can handle it) or best way is to lower multipler and set FSB to 200FSB to test memory if toyr CPU is unlocked.
First of all i'have already tested my cpu and the rams with my previous mobo,so unless this mb has a problem i should go up to 192fsb without any problem!
Now i can't understand why should i raise the Vdimm since the ram runs at lower frequency than the deefault?
Anyway i'll try all you say above and let's hope that everythimg will go ok!
Thanks -
MSI KT4V and Barton 3000+ crash problem
Hi all!
I recently upgraded my PC (MSI KT4V) with an AMD Barton 3000+ CPU. Before I had a 2600+ Throughbred.
With my old 2600+ I could run my system stable with a FSB set at 166. It couldn't go much higher that 175 before the system became unstable.
With my new Barton I have a problem :
With my FSB set at 166 games like Far Cry and COD crashes. Explorer crashed at sites with Flash content (flash.ocx error report) otherwise no problems. My Pinnacle studio 7 program couldn't render playable movies.
After I underclocked my CPU, setting the FSB at 154 giving me a total speed of 2GHz, all problems are gone now
My system reports a CPU temp at 48 degrees celsius at a 166 FSB setting but could it be a cooling problem anyway?
I have used Artic Silver as thermal paste on the CPU die.
I have reset my memory timings to CAS 2,5 even though the Corsair RAM supports CAS 2 to get the most stable system.
Is the KT 400 chipset up for the job with the increased speed?
I would like to get the most performance out of my new Barton so I hope that some of you guys can help me out here.
My system spec is :
Win XP SP1 and SP2
CPU : AMD Barton XP 3000+
Motherboard : MSI KT4V (Bios 1C0)
Soundcard : SB Audigy 2
Graphics card : Radeon 9800pro 256
Memory : 1GB Corsair XMS (CAS 2)
Power suply : Antec 480W
All latest drivers installed
Best Regards
BasseHi Osnavi!
48 degrees is an idle temp and about 51 stressed.
The processor is an Athlon 3000+ 333MHz
The cooler is a Thermaltake Silent Boost
I have 2 modules 512 MB Corsair XMS PC 2700 333MHz placed in slot 1 and 3
I forgot to tell that I ran memtest386 with the fsb set at 166 and I had error reports on the 128Kb L1 cache right away. Lowering the fsb to 154, the memtest came out alright.
Should I remove the heatsink and reaply cooling paste - silver-free maybe?
Strange
Any ideas are welcome
Best regards

AMD-XP 2600+ and MSI KT4V MS-6712 MB
Can somebody help me pls? I do have a MSI KT4V MS-6712 Motherboard and an AMD Athlon XP 2600 processor. According the CPU RATIO settings table I should put the ratio 16 and the FSB on 133, but I don't have a 16. I only have a 15 and if I use the 15 instead of the 16 I do get a performance of 733 Mhz. When I use the 12.5/13 the system says it's a XP-2000+, but I'm still missing some Mhz. I did already upgrade the BIOS to version 1.8 but no results.
Pls help me, I'm getting crazy! ;(I changed it into 166 Mhz and now it's acting as a XP 2600+.
Rob, thanks for your suggestion and help in this matter.

MSI K7T Turbo2 + AMD Athlon XP 2600+
I have downloaded lastest BIOS for MSI K7T Turbo2 but i haven't able to run CPU at full speed (133x16=2128 MHz). And there's no multipler greater than 15 available...
currenlty i'm using 145xdefault (12,5) = 1812,5 MHz... has anyone solved this problem? CPU = AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (333)Oh bugger!
After posting this, I continued scanning and found the answer - and coming back here, I now understand BD51's answer. Didn't sink in first time round!
Anyway, I have apparently purchased the 333fsb version, blissfully unaware that was a 266 version, and that THAT is the one I SHOULD have bought.
Ah well, that'll learn me to check the spec's more closely in future.
Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. -
AMD Athlon XP 2800 (Barton Core) will not post at FSB 166 MHz.
Per top of the board “stickys” I have read a great number of the post on this board and done my homework to provide as much technical info to help you help me. This should explain some of it’s lengthy nature.
Aside from Memory, HDD and Video card every thing else has been unplugged from board and power or stripped out of slots to isolate the problem.
Presently running BIOS: A6712 V. 1B

And shows at post as running 333MHz. MemTested to 1,000% with first 1 stick, then all 3 sticks presently on bios A6712vms.1B0. at fsb 100MHz (aprox. 24hr.) I even installed and ran other AMD utillitys while MemTest was running to “stress” the system memory with zero errors. During this period I checked Windows Task Manager > Performance, CPU usage at 100%, PF usage 1.35gb. No Probs.
Video card: Removed: MSI AGP-8X Ti4200- VTD8X 128 MB DDR 533MHz

BIOS I have tried: The original; Ver:10A, ran fine on Athlon XP 1600 (1400 MP) 3 years.
• Then with MSI Live Update 3: Installed v. 1c which couldn’t run FSB 166MHz (MSI:” Fixes system reports incorrect message for AMD 3200+ CPU.
- Supports Sempron L2 512K 3000+ CPU.)
However, v. 1.c did not work and would not post at all with the newly installed Barton AMD-XP 2800. [frankly this attempt was months ago and I do not remember whether it would post at the slower 100 and 133 FSB speeds, and also to muddle my memory further I was upgrading an A7N8X-D with a Barton XP 3000 and having similar problems on the ASUS,,, which is now running fine at full potential. ; - p
• Then I selected and flashed A6712 V 1.7 122602, boots and runs Win.XP-sp2 at FSB 100MHz & 133MHZ. (MSI:” Supports AMD Barton XP2800+ (FSB333) CPU
-Fixes system sometimes will have IDE CRC error -Fixes D-bracket2+USB keyboard, cannot use keyboard on DOS mode.)” which couldn’t run FSB 166MHz.
I checked with the Tech. at the local shop where I purchased the KT4V MoBo. He suggested I try a different BIOS but he didn’t specify which one. He is a personal friend and admits to some bad luck and dead boards due to flashing bios so reluctant to mess with it.
• Now running: A6712vms.1B0 – MSI hid this BIOS V. found here:
• On a different page than the 2 versions mentioned above. http://www.msicomputer.com/support/bios_result.asp
• No wonder people are frustrated and confused about different MoBo versions there ID #’s and the BIOS versions them selves as seen on this news board. MSI’s fault, no fault of anyone here trying to help.
A6712vms.1B0
Runs fine at FSB 100 (shows as XP 1250+) and FSB 133 (shows as XP 2200+) Booting to Win. XP-sp2 on CMOS, default setup other than minor tweaks to accommodate MSI Ti 4200 AGP 8X 125mb graphics card or Gilmond PCI card. But which couldn’t run FSB 166MHz .
No post at FSB 166 mhz (once, it did flash a post screen stating AMD Athlon XP 2800 for about 2 sec. before going blank) Manual power down. Just now I rebooted with FSB 166, and again saw the AMD Athlon XP 2800 at top of the post screen as I hit pause break,,,, then the machine power crashed to Off. Once it even loaded Win.XP-sp2 but crashed to power off with in 2 min.
I must have booted this beast a dozen times or more after Clear CMOS jumper each time it went to blank screen with mach. still running. Start over; set Default settings and work up with FSB 100, 133, each time to read what POST says and see if it will boot to O/S.
Btw: I have looked for clear evidence through the not so specific descriptions MSI uses to separate these board model #s and may be part of my current problem with correct board ID = correct BIOS ID.

[VIA] unofficial FAQ for KT4 series motherboards
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=6090.0
Eg: - KT4 Ultra (MS-6590), 6-channel hardware audio codec
• KT4 Ultra (Pure Version)
• KT4 Ultra-B (Bluetooth ready)
• KT4 Ultra-BSR (Bluetooth ready + Serial ATA RAID)
• KT4 Ultra-FISR (Bluetooth ready, Serial ATA RAID, Gigabit LAN, IEEE 1394)
- KT4V (MS-6712), 6-channel software audio codec
• KT4V-L, with onboard 10/100 LAN
- KT4M (MS-6596) micro-ATX board
• KT4M-L, with onboard 10/100 LAN
- KT4A Ultra, (MS-6590) NEW!! based on KT400A chipset
• KT4A Ultra (Standard Version)
• KT4A Ultra-SR (Serial ATA RAID)
• KT4A Ultra-FISR (Serial ATA RAID, Gigabit LAN, IEEE 1394)
And a very similar version of this on Official MSI site. Both seem to try and make a difference between modles with on board Lan, and Blue Tooth ready.
Take a look at my original box sticker:
*As seen on face of MoBo: KT4V MS-6712 Ver:10A
*The Original Box bar code label: KT4V-L (601-6712-050)
K7, KT400. 5.1 chnl. S/W Audio, LAN, D-Bracket 2.
Yup, it says all this on the sticker and the in the manual and verified on the MoBo. So I can only guess at all parts of the puzzle as they gave them to me which lead me to the afore mention BIOS versions I ran, or am running. The sticker points to nearly half of the boards above except for the MS-6712 and the Ver:10a which is what I based my BIOS choices on. If someone knows differently and can lead me to official Nfo with a better answer I’m all ears.
Just saw this: Latest Official BIOS : KT4 MS-6590 (1.4), KT4V MS-6712 (1.8 ) , KT4M MS-6596 (1.1)>>Here: [VIA] unofficial FAQ for KT4 series motherboards

Please also keep in mind I’m not trying to scuff anyone’s shoes…I just want to get what’s right for my board so that it and the CPU can live up to their full, "as advertised" potential and run with the other 3 big dogs under my desk.
This seems descriptive enough and rather lengthy. Just doing my homework and reporting my findings so I won’t include actual CMOS settings unless requested. I have notes on all settings I currently use to boot with this problem.
Other Dogs:
ASUS A7N8X-D running Athlon XP 3000 barton core 10 (runs fsb 400..whoknew?), Mem:2.5gb Super Talent
ASUS A7M266-D running Athlon XP 2800 (mp), Mem: 3gb Super Talent
Athlon XP 2800 (mp)
I don’t want to boar you with the details.
Yes, and the above have been upgraded w/new chips GFX cards and BIOS,,, NP.
Cut to sound track: Down on the BIOS again,,, wasn’t that Creedance Clear Water Revival?
Any suggestions or insights are much appreciated.Welcome, and thank you for a thorough input! Hope I don't miss something you already said!
Quick version: Try setting processor voltage to 1,5 volt.
Long version:
Posting at wrong FSB can be put down to two things:
1 The processor isn't what you thought it is, but I think you eliminated that.
2 The system cannot run the processor at the correct speed. Mainly this has to with overheating, and/or that memory and processor cannot cooperate. This must be it, as you noticed the processor is correctly recognised.
You have little connected right? Then the best thing would be to pull power cable out. Take the motherboard and redo the seating of the processor, this is much better done with motherboard taken out.
At the same time, I suggest you clear CMOS. Should always be done when changing processor, and I've noticed on the Internet there are a few 1,5V XP2800 around.

KT 4V+XP 2600 BARTON+DDR@266MHz POSSIBLE ?
Last week i decided to upgrade my athlon xp1800, and I bought a xp2600. Unfortunatelly, the new xp2600 is barton core ( 512kb L2 cache ), that means the fsb is to be set at 166MHz and the multiplier 12.5 (or 11.5).
The problem is that I have 1GB of PC2100 DDR ( 266MHz ) memory installed.
Whenever I try to set up the fsb and memorz clock separately ( fsb - 166, mem - 133 ), and reboot, the memory clock is automatically set to 166 ( DDR 333mhz ).
Simple question> Is there any way to set up MEMORY clock and FSB separately.
Do I have to go for new MEMORY MODULES ( DDR333, or DDR400 ), to run the CPU at full speed?
The board is KT4V, BIOS 1.9..........
Please let me know.......
THANX
?(There is a 2600 barton? I thought it was only t-bred B's, that were 2600.
Oops, my bad, there is a 2600+. Still haven't really seen one around yet though for sale. No matter. -
Ideal KT4V BIOS settings for XP2500+ Barton
I've read AMD's recommendations for the KT4V BIOS settings http://www.amdforums.com/showindex.php?s=&threadid=186506 , but they seem to be very generic. I would like to know the settings that would give me the highest performance, without causing any instability, using my present system and usage. My son does 3D animation and gaming on this computer. This is a stand alone computer (no network). The latest version BIOS for the KT4V offers an option in Power Management Features to enable CPU HALT Command Detection. I heard that this would work better than Cooler XP in cooling the CPU. I enabled it and my CPU Temp dropped 6-10 degrees C. Is this recommended? What is the down side of this action? My system is as follows: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ w/ Vantec VA4-C7040 CPU fan (w/Arctic Silver 3) MSI KT4V mobo Gainward Golden Sample Ti/450 TV w/ 128MB DDR (GeForce3 Ti 200) 2 - Kingston 512MB PC2700 DDR RAM Antec TRUE550 power supply 1 - 40GB 7200RPM hard drive 1 - 30GB 5400RPM hard drive 1 - CD-ROM 1 - CD-RW 1 - floppy drive Windows XP home Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Barry
As a result of my research, these are the BIOS settings that I am using. My computer runs well and is stable.

damianThermal Grease Use Voids AMD Warranty
Quote
For permanent installation AMD only recommends using phase change material with the heatsink/fan. No thermal grease is recommended for anything other than temporary evaluation purposes. And the only thermal grease recommended for that is Shin Etsu G 749. Artic Silver is made up of a matrix with conductive particles. There is the possibility of creating electrical shorts on the package. Any failed processor used w/ Artic Silver or any other thermal grease other than Shin Estu G 749 would be subject to warranty voiding. The concerns with other thermal greases are due to thermal pumpout causing overheating with on off cycling of the PC over time. The above information assumes you are referring to use with Athlon. For Opteron Shin Etsu G 749 also is the only thermal grease recommended for permanent installation. Again the concern is due to pumpout with thermal cycling.

NO SOUND - using the MSI KT4V 6712
I have recently formatted my hard drives and installed MS Windows XP Pro +SP1 and also installed a new case.
Soon as i turned it on the sound didnt work.
I then tried almost everything inside windows to try to get the sound drivers working but to no success...
I have installed loads of different drivers - AC 97 Audio ones
Tried different speakers and headphones but it still doesnt work
Could it be something on the motherboard as there are two wires hanging around???

MSI KT4V with usb+bios problem!
hi i have an msi kt4v motherboard: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/m...ODEL=MS-6712...
and it wont startup my keyboard until windows loads.
i even updated my bios to the vary latest one....in the bios list there is a bios with this details:
BIOS Type AMI® BIOS File Size 514KB
Version 1.7 Update date 2002-12-26
Update Description -Support AMD Barton XP2800+ (FSB333) CPU
-Fixed system sometimes will have IDE CRC error
-Fixed D-bracket2+USB keyboard, cannot use keyboard on DOS mode.
Special note ,
Download 6712v17.exe
that suppose to fix my prob. its not the latest though, the latest is 1.8. i updated to 1.8 directly, i didnt upgrade from 1.7 though, but from an earlier version. is anyone else experiencing this problem? whats strange is that it will work if i clear the cmos and reboot. but then if i restart it wont work. do i have to upgrade to 1.7 then to 1.8?I have the same problem too. My keyboard\'s cable failed and I replaced it but made it USB only, after the later bios releases it stopped working until windows loaded.
Legacy support is turned on to no avail. I've been keeping a ps/2 keyboard handy for when I have to get into bios or some other command level operation. -

MSI K7N2 Delta-L
AMD Athlon XP +2600
1 gigDDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • ECC • 6ns • 2.5V •64mx2
altec lansing 2.1 50w
Windows XP Pro
MSI 4200Ti 128mb AGP 8X
intergrated sound
300w PSU
I recently bought the k7n2 delta mb and a new processor athlon xp +2600.
But when i have the cmos configured for default settings, it reads my processor normal "+2600"; boots up fine and goes into windows, but when i try to run something anything that makes the led tell me it's thinking. It goes fine but but after a few seconds of thinking i get the blue screen. so i thought is was the cmos, i tinkered around with it and changed the fsb from 166 to 133. Since I did that nothing has gone wrong, but my processor is reading at a +2000 athlon xp. I dont know if i have to adjust the voltage's of something change the cpu ratio etc.....
I can't figure it out PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!! I WANT MY +2600 back.junglederrick,
It sounds like either your Power Supply not supplying the juice and/or 1 gig 2700 DDR Ram not being nForce Approved. (Please list the specs on both the RAM and the Power Supply.)
Take Care,
Richard

Hey, I got a refurbished MSI KT4V (KT400) from newegg today. First of all the packaging wasn't that good. The motherboard was in an antistatic bag, inside of a fedex box inside another fedex box. No padding at all. I see nothing physically wrong with the motherboard. So it takes the place of my Epox 8KHA+. I can not get the board to post. It will occasionally beep 3 long beeps. Beeeep beeeep beeeep. I tryed different ram, a pci and agp video card. The cpu works fine in my 8kha+ (athlon xp 1600+) Ram is corsair pc3500 ddr. I also took the battery out for a minute and I reset the bios like 10 times. So, should i RMA it and b1tch at newegg for this rare newegg bad packaging?
mate, i'd say RMA right away. this has caused me a week of annoyance and time spent swapping components in & out of my system, running around to other people's houses so i can check what works & what doesn't. i've now seen this prob posted on several boards, it definitely *isn't* a RAM issue.
