MSI Lightning 6970 issues?

Hello. I have a new MSI Lightning 6970 and the video card is not working properly. When I first put the card in my computer everything seems ok, however after a few days it started to act weird. Today, I was trying the new battlefield beta and the screen split in half and then I rebooted the computer and the computer will no longer boot. I can go into safe mode ok. I looked into the machine and noticed that the second I turn the box on some of the led lights on the video card are red, I think 11-14.
Is my graphics card bad? Any suggestions?
Brand new Dell XPS 9100, core i7... only x-factor is I do not know how much watts the power supply in the dell. I can put in another video card and it works fine. Should I send this back to Newegg??
Thx,
Mike

There are no labels on the PS except the S/N from Dell. I did call Dell and the PS is a 550watt one. No matter what I need to purchase a real power supply. I just do not want to miss the chance to send the thing back and get it replaced if it is defective. I will borrow a friends PS tomorrow and try that.
Thanks.

    Hello yall,
I just joined this forum. I have been having a very serious problem with my graphics card. I purchased a MSI Radeon HD 6970 Lightning Edition last year. I have played on it just fine, but I was having some motherboard problems and so am now using another motherboard. I also decided to purchase a second identical graphics card. Now, when I turn on my new motherboard (Asus Crosshair V Formula Z) with a small graphics card I have, it boots up fine. If I use either of my 6970s it doesn't pass post. Do yall have any ideas?

The motherboard will not pass post while either of my 6970 Graphics cards are installed. I know it is the GPUY because the post error beeps correspond to GPU problems. Here are my troubleshooting steps so far:
    1.   MSI 6970 Lighning (A) installed with PSU power installed, no post
    2.   MSI 6970 ightning (B) installed with PSU power installed, no post
    3.   All graphics cards removed, posts into a successful boot
    4.   Weak Zotac GPU (I don’t know the model) installed, successful post and boot
    5.   Reinsert MSI Lightning A, no post
    6.   Reinsert MSI Lightning B, no post
How should I proceed? I have a brand new Thermaltake power supplu and I’m almost 100% its not a power supply issue.

  • Msi Lightning 6970 HOT HOT HOT

I bought this card in July last year, I have always had a head set on so it never bothered me but wow is t is LOUD . After looking around the web it seems other people have had the same problem being that it runs hot which drives the fans up, mine is running at 52 degrees C now with only Chrome and afterburner open . All the responses I have found are saying contact msi or rma it, just wondering if anyone here knows anything about it.

My advice is, if You're technical enough, exchange the thermal compund to something better. My HD6950 TF III, after applying Noctua NT-H1 compund, dropped about 5 degrees from what it was @ stock.

  • MSI Lightning 7970 Eyefinity 6 screen tearing.

    Hello all,
I must start by expressing some dismay over the quality of phone support (probably should repost in another forum).  The person I talked to did not really seem to listen to my symptoms or care what I was saying, which is why I am here.  You seem to make a fine product, and the tech did not really seem to fit your status quo.
My issue is screen tearing.  I have a MSI Lightning with 6 outputs.  The 4 adapters are active display port to DVI adapters.  The other 2 dvi outputs are in fact DVI-d.  What happens is (whether in eyefinity or not), if I take a window and extend it to the full height of the desktop, then drag it from left to right and back across the desktop, parts of the window will not keep up with other parts of the window.  Essentially parts of the dragged window will lead other parts.
All the monitors are the same make, model, and resolution.  Furthermore, I have two different sets of 6 monitors.  The sets of 6 are different make's and models, but within the sets of 6 the makes and models are identical.  The problem follows both sets.
I have an ASUS HD7970-DG2T-XXXX.  This problem also appears on that card as well as 3 other brands makes and models (6970 too with 6 like display port outputs).  I have tried multiple sets of display port adapters and different sets of cables.
The problem persists through video and 3d applications.  I have tried different versions of catalyst too, and some are better than others, with the one tearing the least being version 12.7.
My resoulotions are 1920x1080 on all monitors.  I have also tried crossfiring two 7970's and the problem is still there.
My motherboard is Sabertooth 990fx with a FX 8120 CPU.  I have 8 gigs of ram as well as a 750w PSU.
Thanks in advance to any help offered!

Yep, all the way back to 12.3 and up to 13.3.  It hasn't been fun...

  • Constant BSODs MSi hd 6970

First of all sending shouts to all on this forum.
Been searching through various forums and seeking the solution.
A month ago I´ve upgraded my old 4890 to MSi HD 6970 and since then my problems have started.
I´ve  found that several other MSi HD 6970 and 6*** users have this problem, albeit no solution has worked for me yet.
    Gonna keep it short.
    What´s the problem:
    - constant BSODs / vertical stripes and crashes while playing 3d games (Bad Company 2, AC: Brotherhood) - sometimes after 10 mins of gameplay, sometimes after an hour
    - no BSODs in Win 7 itself
    - no BSODs during movies / videos
    - no BSODs while dual monitor setup and both in use as extended (dvi Asus 24´´ and hdmi 42´´ LCD TV Samsung)
    What I´ve tried:
    - various drivers (original drivers supplied with the card, 11.4 to 11.8 CCC) - no change, still crashing
    - sweeped the old drivers in safe mode - no change
    - uninstalled the Afterburner app; from what I´ve learned it´s in conflict w/ punkbuster which is sort of mandatory for Bad Company 2
    - not using ANY kind of GPU utility (except CCC)
    - temps max 90 celsius in heavy load
    - fan running on 35% in heavy load
    My specs:
    CPU: INTEL Core 2 Duo E8500 - 3,16GHz
    RAM: 6GB  DDR3 1333MHz PC10666 CL6-6-6-18 OCZ Reaper HPC Edition
    Motherboard:INTEL DP45SG Skyberg
Sound: firewire Edirol FA-66; on-board audio disabled
    VGA:MSI Radeon 6970 2PM2D2GD5
HDD: WESTERN DIGITAL Caviar Black 500GB, SATA II, WESTERN DIGITAL Caviar Green 1000GB, SATA II
    PSU:TAGAN TG600-U88 600W ATX 2.2
    case: Antec P182
    OS:Windows 7 home premium x64
Is it PSU, MB or any other component in conflict with the GPU?
So lads, is it time for RMA?
All your help and suggestions will be much appreciated

Registered only to say: had same issues and solved it myself. I sent back the card to the vendor but they refused to do anything because according to their test softwares, the card was fine, the issue did not come up. Yet when I started playing 3D games, my card and PC froze after a few minutes.
I spent hours searching for the solution and tested all that was suggested without resolution. In the end I took it apart, cleaned the original thermal paste from and around the GPU (it was clearly a mess, spilled around the  GPU and not evenly applied, plus it felt somehow very dry), then I applied a better quality paste that I previously purchased for my new CPU.  I put the card back into my PC and issue gone. I used to get above 95C  (especially the second GPU) just before the PC crashed, now the maximum is around 69-70 Celsius and no crash for a month (playing Guild wars2, assassins creed etc)
It is very easy to do all this, even if you are a noob like myself. I 'm not a technical person, so I looked it up all on youtube: how to take the heatsink apart, how to clean the orignal paste and how to apply new paste.
There is another issue I was also facing, with the famous atikmdag crash during games (freeze for a few seconds, then it comes back with the mesage that it has been recovered successfully) - the only workaround I found was to lower the GPU clock from 940 to 900MHz. Error disappeared completely and games are still runnig great on max graphics. It is fine for now, but I'm sure I wont buy another ATI graphic card

  • MSI Lightning BE / Lightning

Hey guys, I've been constantly hearing great things about this GPU, being the top 7970 available today in comparison to the Asus Matrix, which are basically the two top cards on the 7970 platform today.. but I'm having issues finding one for sale?
It seems that everywhere I look I can't find the MSI Lightning BE for sale, it's either removed , or discontinued from every where I look. What's going on?

We don't know. High-end cards are often rarely in stock as they are costly for resellers and chances to sell are minimal as only very few users buy such expensive vgas.
Ask MSI if delivery is delayed or something like that: >>How to contact MSI.<<

  • Troubleshooting my MSI Lightning 7970

Okay so, long story short-- I had to send my first MSI Lightning in for a RMA- about a week or 2 ago I got back the card from MSI- i believe they sent me a new one or fixed it- what not- only had time to install the card recently - raiding in a game gives me very little time at all.
i uninstalled my old card (nvidia) + drivers- wiped with Driver fusion (drive sweeper)- wiped registry with CC cleaner- restarted into safemode- and proceeded to use driver sweeper again + cc cleaner again to make sure everything is fixed.
checked device manager- display is 'standard vga'
Put the card in tested with MSI disk drivers first- comes at like 8.92 tahiti- start up skyrim and few minutes into the game i get a GSoD (gray, sometimes green, blue, teal or pink even- colourful), coloured vertical stripes that cover the monitor- i thought this was odd so i uninstalled drivers- using both custom and express- and proceeded to install the 12.8 & 12.6 catalyst drivers-- both times i installed i went into safemode to clean out any previous driver info (could not remove legacy_amdkap)-- I still have the same GSoD- the same vertical stripes whenever any form of serious 3d rendering occurs.
-- to make sure its a video stress problem i loaded up 3dmark11 and ran a performance test- which didn't even get to starting because i got another 'vertical stripes across the monitor'
    * currently running memtest to see if its a faulty memory stick, but really i'm trying to exhaust options- could this be a faulty RMA'd video card?" another one?

  • MSI Lightning 7970 help!!

Hey guys need some help I'm a little confused on, I'm in the process of purchasing 2 MSI lightning hd 7970's But have read they have no dual link DVI. Well here is my monitor Alienware OPTX AW2310 120Hz I want to play in 120hz and are a little confused on how to get the MSI lightnings to do so not offfering dual link DVI hook up, below is some specs of the monitor for your reference and any help would be greatful :
    Panel Size : 23" Widescreen
    Aspect Ratio : Widescreen (16:9)
Panel Type : TN - Twisted Nematic
    Optimal Resolution : 1920 x 1080 (Full HD)
    Contrast Ratio : 80000:1 (max)
    Brightness : 400 cd/m2 (typical)
    Response Time : 3ms (typical) (grey-to-grey)
    Viewing Angle : 170°/ 160°
Color Support : 16.7 million colors
    Color Gamut : 83.4%4
    Refresh Rate : 120Hz (3D Capable)
Device Type : Widescreen Flat Panel Display
    Video Connectivity : DVI x 1, HDMI x 1
Audio Connectivity : Yes; Audio In and Out (2.0)
    USB Ports : Yes: 4 USB 2.0
User Input / Controls : Touch Capacitive OSD Buttons

i would suggest using a Mini-display port to dual link DVI active adapter like this one with a USB power connection.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-BizLink-DisplayPort-Adapter-Powered/dp/B003XYBA72/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1359592165&sr=8-4
that is the only way your going to be able to hook up the card to that monitor at 120HZ!
you should get a Mini display port to Display port adapter with the card and connect one of those adapters above to that. then plug the USB into the rear usb port of the case and your up and running.
bit of a cobble together but it should get you a full DVI dual link signal from a display port.

  • MSI 6970 Lightning - artifacts issue

    Hello,
Yesterday I received my MSI 6970 Lightning and today I installed a few games to try and see how it performs.
Everything works as expected until you start stressing it with some of the newer, heavier games and/or benchmarks.
I took some pictures to show what I mean that you can view at:
    http://dev.nixit.nl/artifacts/
It's running at default speeds and I tried the latest drivers from MSI as well as the latest official AMD/ATI drivers and v12.1
Other information that may be relevant:
    motherboard: evga x58 sli
    PSU: 1000w cooler master
    ram: 12gb ocz ddr3 1600
hdds: 2x74gb raptors (heh, oldies I know), 2x750
Any ideas? I mean, I know that I can probably downclock it but come on it should run at its advertised speeds at least, right?
Is this a known issue? If any other information is required to solve this please do ask I'll be here checking for updates!
    Thanks in advance

You should read this thread and specifically regarding the switches on the back of the card. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=150708.0
These are the switches that should ONLY be operated by professional overclockers under controlled circumstances.
Mainly because these switches remove precautionary measures from graphics cards to allow them to deliver the highest levels of performance.
These switches can be found on the back and the side of the card and have several functions:
    Quote
BIOS Switch, run with the normal Lightning BIOS or a special sub-zero version
Please check this switch, i.e. the position its in. Ensure  that it is in the "Normal position".
Then the following switches are best left alone, but just check.
    Quote
    Xtreme Cool :
Removes coldbug (boot at sub-zero temperatures!) on N580GTX Lightning
Increases the AMD Powertune limit by 250% on R6970 Lightning
    Quote
    Increase Memory and GPU Voltages
    PWM clock tuning:
Increases the PWM frequency from 260 to 310 MHz on the N580GTX Lightning
Increases the PWM frequency from 300 to 350 MHz on the R6970 Lightning
    Increase PLL voltage
Remove Overcurrent Protection (warning, this WILL burn your card easily if you're not careful!)

  • MSI Lightning GTX 680 SLI issue

I have search and noticed someone had a similar issue but they had to remove their sound card to solve their issue. Unfortunately I don't have a sound card to remove.
    Motherboard Z77-UP5-TH
    i7-3770k (not OC)
    32 GB Ram
    1000w PSU
I have 2 MSI GTX 680 Ligtning's that I am trying to SLI. Both show up in Device manager and show in Nivida control panel but NO option to SLI the cards (See image below)
Let me start off with a bit cause I have tried alot and reverting to different fourms now.
Here is what I have done:
-Installed current, beta, and old drivers (fresh installs with driver sweeper)
    -Tried 4 different SLI cables
-Plugged in Sata Power to the ATX4P slot on the Mother board
-Installed each card individually into each slot to see if they work (They do as single cards)
-Used a friends MSI GTX 680 lightning edition to try and SLI (still did not work)
    -Did a CMOS reset
    -Updated mobo Bios to F11
-Updated mobo Bios to 12e Beta
-Updated the GPU cards to the same current Bios (80.04.47.00.18)
-Installed one card, rebooted, shutdown, installed 2nd card, rebooted (still nothing)
-installed both at the same time ( nothing)
-installed one monitor to one card (top and bottom)
    -installed 2 monitors (2 to 1 and 1 to 1)
-tried both cards on an ASRock Extreme 7 Gen 3 board
-reseated the reactors on both cards
    -Set my BIOS to legacy
-disabled Internal graphics on my BIOS
    -Set display to PEG
    -Forced PCI GEN 3
    -Forced PCI GEN 2
The only thing I can think of is that PCI-E slots are not running correctly (see GPUZ BUS INTERFACE) One is running at 8x and the other is running at 4x.
    Bad board?
Pics below are GPU Z of both cards and a picture of NVIDIA control panel.

you said both cards work single in each slot but do they run at correct pci-ex configuration 16x or 8x ?
All of these test were done today with the latest GPUz and running their render test.

  • [Request] Bios Update for MSI 290x Lightning (Fan Issue)

    Hey there,
i'm forced to use 14.4 Catalyst now and having Fan Issues since then.
    So here is my S/N:
    S/N: 602 - V307 - 04SB1402053468
A short instruction on how to Flash correctly would be awesome

Use the attached UEFI vbios versions to fix the fan issue.
    TV307MH.101 is normal vbios, TV307MH.111 is LN2
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (307_04s.rar) and put the included file (TV307MH.101 or TV307MH.111) on that stick.
Rename TV307MH.101 / TV307MH.111 to 101.rom / 111.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 101.rom (or 111.rom) [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

  • Hello & Need some input - MSI Lightning Extreme 580's

    Hello All-
In a few days, well as soon as UPS delivers my new toys I will be a new member to the MSI GPU Family.  I have 2 Lightning Extreme 580's on the way and just wanted some feedback/advice on the best way to test/connect the cards.  I currently am running a 2x580 EVGA Vanilla Cards, so I do understand the whole SLI situation.  My questions/help is below:
    1. Since these are 2 new cards, is it advisable to install one at a time and test the card by itself first? Then install the 2nd card seperately and test it?
    2. Obviously anyone buying this card is going to OC it. So it is also advisable to OC one card at a time to test each card and how the OC?
    3. I noticed 2-3 areas where the SLI Cable can connect too.  Does it matter which one you connect the SLI Ribbon too?
For any owners of the Extreme 580 and advice you would give to a new owner of the card?
Lastly, is there a site or a chart that shows what others were able to achieve with OC?  I know for my EVGA's there were alot of spreedsheets showing various users and what speed, fan percentage, temps etc. Anything like that for the MSI Family?

==> 1. It's not necessary to do this. This can only helps if you have issues and by testing in that ways it can be isolated which card is cause the eventual trouble. As there is no reason to suspect cards failure you can skip this.
==> 2. It's also not necessary to do this. Because when they are running in SLI, both combined speed will be equal to the lower card speed in the party.
So finding personally which one card how much can be overclocked will be useless as the total speed will be speed of the slowest card in the party.
ect: finding the card with better OC potencial will be useless, as you will run them in SLI and their combined speed will be down to the slowest card.
==> 3. Use the 1st one connector near to the VGA's outputs. Etc:
