MSI Media Live -- Mega 180 all over again???

Well, since there isn't a forum dedicated to the MSI Media Live barebones, I figured I post it here. Let me just start off by saying that I was very hesitant to buy another MSI barebones after the last overheating fiasco with the Mega 180 that I previously purchased. So, I bought the Media Live, along with 2GB of RAM and an AMD 5200+ X2 CPU and a 320GB SATA drive.
I tried installing Windows Media Center 2005. It installed but getting it to boot reliably each and every time without a blue screen proved to be an impossible task. I switched the CPU, the memory and the HD with no change. One thing that did strike me is the VGA BIOS on the system that states that it's not for production use. So, I went and purchased Vista Ultimate. That installed fine and it boots up with no blue screens which is a good thing. Of course, vista is very buggy and annoying and I would love to put MCE 2005 back on this thing. There are absolutely no driver/bios updates on the MSI Media Live barebones. I understang that it's new, but a pre-production VGA bios is unacceptable. Oh yeah, I forgot the most annoying thing about it. The front slot to feed a CD/DVD does not align properly with the actual optical drive, so when you eject cd/DVD it gets stuck. That of course is a workmanship issue. I would love to get a new front that actually  works for this.

Well, the link doesn't work. It takes me to the MSI global site. Why should I contact the reseller? It's not their fault MSI has a QA problem! It's not like the flip door on the Mega 180 ever worked right anyways, did it? It's not like the Mega 180 didn't get hot as hell, but MSI continued to sell it, didn't they? Any other manufacturer would have recalled all the units instead of having posts on their forums on how to cool down your mega 180 and by the way, by following these instructions you invalidate your warranty, blah blah blah!. I mean seriously, who does that?
There is nothing to adjust on the drive cage as far as I can tell. I think it's a poorly designed front. I'm sure I'm going to end up being yet another beta tester for MSI with this unit just like I was with the Mega 180. I just wish the media live doesn't end up being the same crap that the mega 180 was.
I'm sure this topic will be censored by MSI. I hope not, because it will be re-posted on anandtech as well as hardocp and any other forums that I see fit. All I want is a properly working unit without me having to do any freaking adjustments to it. I don't think it's too much to ask from a manufacturer. I'm simply not going to take it in the rear from MSI on this one!!! Once was enough. This time I will make a big stink about it.

I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanent?  I have an older machine with Windows XP.

I don't believe mounting the hard drive should be necessary, unless you have several external drives and want your computer to recognise them as folders, rather than drives. I've never had to mount a hard drive, ever. If you don't know how to do it, then it shouldn't be necessary now.
    Try this:
Prepare iTunes so that it can see the external drive.
Make a note of which drive-letter the external drive has been allocated. (Look in Windows Exploer)
Look at the file location for a song. Make sure it plays (and therefore that iTunes has found it). Highlight it and select File/Get Info/Summary>Where: and make a note of the drive letter for that song.
Close and shut down the computer.
The next time you turn the computer on again, connect the external drive
Before you start iTunes - check the external drive in Windows Explorer. Is it ready, does it have the same drive-letter that it had last time? Can you go into the drive and see the files on it?
Once you can, start iTunes. (If the drive lettter has changed, you need to work out why before going any further.)
If iTunes fails to find your external drive, you need to check where iTunes is looking for your Library.
Select the same song you checked before (presumably iTunes can no longer find it). Follow the procedure for locating it. You should be able to see where iTunes thinks the file is. It's the drive that counts. Which drive letter is iTunes looking at? Is it the same one that it was previously (which should also be the same one that the drive has now).
What happens, which step do you have problems with?

  • MSI MEDIA LIVE (ATI HD 3200) - Flickering/unstable in Windows 7 (x64?)

I am having a new virgin install problem (after upgrading the processor) the problem may be x64.
Story: Well, this is a MSI Media Diva motherboard MS-7411 and I had to install Windows 7 x86 (32-bit) in order to be able to update the BIOS to 1.3 to accept the new AMD quad processor (Phenon II X4 905e) that I was contemplating for the build.
Windows 7 x86 showed cleanly and stable with no video flicker. The BIOS update went smoothly, and then I did a clean install of Windows 7 but installed x64 (64 bit) his time instead of x86 (32-bit).
At first the boot screen seemed stable, but on the desktop it flickered constantly (with black lines).  I did some updates and installed the ATI driver software and the correct monitor profile and it seems to flicker less, but it still seems like an unstable image at a minute level (that is the screen is not solid, there are little jaggy flickers throughout like radio interference).
When there were black bar flickers swore it flickered in response to some interference from another device - or at least that's what it seems like to me.
    Set-Up:
MSI Media Live DIVA MS-7411 motherboard
    . North Bridge: AMD® 780M
    . South Bridge: AMD® SB700
    ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200
    Phenom II X4 905e Processor
    G.Skill F2-640-CL4D-4GBPK PC2-6400 (2 x 2GB DDR2-800) Dual Channel Memory
BIOS AMI 1.34 (most recent) - Optomized Defaults
Intel 40GB SSD is the main HD with the OS (SATA), + 1TB WD Green HDD (for media) (SATA) + LG DVD Multi-drive (SATA)
Monitor Samsung SyncMaster 215TW (same flicker whether I use VGA or Component Out)
ATI Catalyst 10.1 for Windows 7 (x64) Suite installed.
There was a point where it seemed more stable and was giving me a dialogue saying that the Catalyst Control Panel was not for my version video driver (and that may have been with the Windows 7 default driver install.
I would prefer to run x64 for personal reasons and to take advantage of more RAM.
I may try doing a fresh install of Win7 x86 32 bit and see if the problem goes away again
     - but I hate having to do this experimentaiton on my SSD.
Any ideas or similar experiences?  Thank you in advance.

64bit Windows not some logical step to follow if you don't have 64bit software that you need to run.
64bit CPU's have been around for a long time, yet Microsoft never bothered to do anything with it, with as result it's just starting where Linux/Unix started 20 years ago.
That is why they are stable with it and Windows is not, also they maintain a completely different OS model and they have 99.99% of the source-code of all programs.
And it's still not a priority for Microsoft, as they maintain 32bit versions just the same, but no software in 64bit versions that is worth switching for.
32bit has trouble free drivers and software, no wonder, they had decades to perfect 2000, XP, (Vista)W7...however, 64bit Windows is a wormhole, best left to be untouched until you explicitly need it.
As for running 64bit Windows with 32bit software it's NOT faster, NOT as stable and NOT as compatible.
    Looks enough reason for me....

  • MSI Media Live - HDMI Problems

    Hi all
    Hope somebody can help?
Got a little problem with this system when connected via HDMI cable.
On boot up it displays the Windows Start up info (not sure the correct term) and the logo saying Windows XP loading, but then get a blank screen. If I change over to scart all is OK I can see the desktop.
Possibly something daft, but it has beat me.

  • MSI Media Live problems out of the box! :(

    Hi everybody!
I have recently bought an MSI Media Live from ebuyer with the hope if replacing and improving on my old MegaPC.
Out of the box all looked well and started to fill the barebones box with all my bits and pieces. Bought an AMD AM2 chip for it and put in some memory from another PC DDR2.
The machine on switch on started the obligatory BIOS checks and off we went. Or so I thought.
First of all I placed my Media Centre 2005 cd in the drive and the machine point blank refused to boot from the CD drive. After a while I thought I would stick XP Home in and do an upgrade from within. The XP Home disk came up with the line about checking system configuration and then hung. This happened repeatedly.
Next plan was install Media Centre on the HDD using another PC. So swapped the RAM back out and the HDD and went for the install. This went without a hitch on the other PC so after the install swapped the RAM and HDD back into the media live.
The Windows startup screen then came up but would get stuck in a reboot loop before windows started. If I asked to boot into safe mode the machine would start. This leads me to believe it is a software issue. While in safe mode with networking, managed to get all the updates I could find for both windows and MSI. However still can't get the machine to start in anything but safe mode which is driving me nuts because I can see what the machine is capable of but just can't get into it!
If anyone has any ideas they will be much appreciated. Have run RAM checks and swapped all parts out to make sure they work in other machines which they do and obviously there is nothing wrong with the install CD.
Just seemed to have reached a dead end!#
    Thanks in advance.

You can't install Windows on one PC and then transfer the drive into another PC, it won't work unless the other PC is identical, due to differences in hardware abstraction layer and core system drivers.
Have you anyway of trying another optical drive? If you can't, you may want to return the unit to Ebuyer for replacement

  • Every time I am asked for my Apple password, I put it in and then it is not recognized.  When I answer the security question, I am told it is wrong.  I reset the password, try again, and we start all over again.  Not recognized.

How can I get Apple to recognize me? Every time I try to put in my Apple password, it doesn't recognize it.  I try answering the security question, will not recognize it.  I end up changing the password then try signing in again and it won't recognize it.  We start all over again.

Have you changed the email address associated with the Apple ID? I did, and learned the hard way that it caused a lot of problems. I had to delete that ID and create a new one, then it caused problems with iCloud because of my old email address. If that's not the case, you might need to set up a new Apple ID altogether. Sounds like a pain, but it's not too hard, and you only need to create a new email address. You can also set up new security questions for the new ID and it should be recognized when you enter the information in iTunes, the App Store, etc. If that doesn't work, I recommend calling Apple and explaining the situation. Here's the page for Apple support numbers depending on where you live:

  • Is it possible to move my iTunes from the old laptop to the new one (including all the music files and playlists) without having to start all over again with a blank iTunes?

Is it possible to move my iTunes from the old laptop to the new one (including all the music files and playlists) without having to start all over again with a blank iTunes?

    yes
You will need to copy the whole iTunes folder which is in your user profile on the old computer in Music folder.
Before you do it make sure iTunes are updates on the old computer and it works without any problems.
This will copy all your media, music, movies (provided you did not change the default location).
After the migration you will need to sing in to Apple store again with your Apple ID
and also authorize your new computer (both done from the tom menu bar in Store.
Once you are done please deauthorize your old computer (the same menu path) if you are not planning to use it anymore.
    Any problems post here.

I have an MSI Media Live DIVA I can't get to POST, show any video indication, keyboard indication, or beeps from the motherboard with or without RAM.  I have tried it both in the case and sitting on a static bag.  I need some suggestions before I contact MSI for a replacement.
Also, the system has never been booted (all new parts) and my other systems in the house aren't AM2 so I haven't been able to test the CPU to make sure it works.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

  • MSI Media Live No Audio

    MSI Media Live
So got this barebones the other day build it installed xp and wanted to use the HDMI cable for video/audio but I get no audio so i thought i would use a standard vga cable and a digital optical lead for audio and well still no audio lol I've update the Bios and tried all the turn this and that off tricks with no luck. Anyone able to help me?

I only ask, as I wonder if your system is overheating. Although the CPU appears to be compatible, it may not appear on the CPU support list as the heatsink is unable to efficiently cool it. Just a possibility.

  • MSI Media Live: TV-Out Probs in HDMI-MCE-Fullscreen-Mode

    Hello Folks,
maybe anybody has a hint: my MSI Media Live @ Toshiba Regza 42X3030D loses video-output after switching to full screen mode.
The screen supports acc. to manual via HDMI following modes: 1080p, 1080i and 720p
In Windows mode everything working fine in 1920x1080 interlaced and non-interlaced - but after pressing the green button i got a no-signal-blue-screen (not a BSOD). Hitting Windows-Key i can go back and kill the wmc-task.
Does anybody know in what resolution at which frequency runs mce-fullscreen interface?
Is there any possiblity to edit a config-file to set a resolution/frequency-mode to avoid auto-testing/ajustment?
I would be grateful about every hint.
    Thanx

Sorry but your are doing something wrong with your ML.
I just installed the Screensaver ver 3.0beta on my ML and it performs without any hickups or troubles at all.
    I'm using the following:
    Athlon X2 4200+
    2x 1GB DDR800 cheapest I could find
    Onboard video 1680*1050*32
    XP SP3
    Standard MSI supplied drivers.
I did notice you are using 4x memory sticks at DDR800, you should know that the AMD CPU you use doesn't official support 4 (dualsided) sticks at DDR800.
Have you tried running with 2 sticks or reduced speed to DDR667 and 2T commandrate?
    Or tried with Vista32 bit?
It's strange you have to put another card in there.
Also, I have altered my CPU-fan direction as the box gets way hot, my CPU fan is now blowing out instead of sucking air in and fill the box with hot CPU-air.
That way the box stays very cold.
It's very easy to change the direction, simply take the top of the cooler off (put a screwdriver in the 4 holes and it comes off) then slide the fan out and turn it around.
    Maybe it helps you too.

  • Temperature Concern MSI Media Live.

The temperatures of my MSi Media Live is worrying me.
Putting my hand over CPU cooling vent was very hot and in the past the PC has switched off on it's own.
I was running at around 60 degrees C on idle after Windows XP loaded.
I used to have a AMD x2 5600+ processor (65W) but recently changed it for an AMD x2 4850e processor (45W) hoping my temperatures would drop.
    Unfortunately they have not.
Things that I have tried are:
Reseating the stock HSF, repasting TIM (Arctic Silver 5)
Turning the stock fan around to face upwards (as described elsewhere on this forum, to blow hot air out)
Swapping the stock cooler for a Scythe Shuriken Rev.b - Seemingly hardly any difference in temps, maybe 4-5 degrees lower?
Removing the riser card (to allow more air movement inside the case)
    Changing processors (x2 5600+ to a x2 4850e)
Reflashed the BIOS to the most current version (thinking there was a sensor problem)
Speedfan is obviously reading from my Winbond sensor, HWInfo shows me the temperatures of each core (a lot higher than Speedfan)
The T-Max of my CPU is 78 degrees C so I've set the BIOS to shutdown at 80 degrees C, I have disabled Smart Fan and cool and quiet in the BIOS.
I've setup Speedfan to alert me of high temperatures once the CPU (Winbond) gets to 65 degrees C
One other thing I've noticed is that the nVidia MCP was ridiculously hot and would often heat up the steel case support bar (directly above) when I was reseating the CPU I also reseated and repasted this heatsink too.
I've attached a screenshot I've just taken doing a few Windows updates, as you can see the maximum core temps are rather high.
Before putting the case lid back on I had my hand over the CPU Fan and it seem only warm?
I've read that it is possible that the temperature sensors are effected by the Brisbane bug but I want to be 100% sure that this is the problem?
Please advise thoughts or suggestions. Thank-you in advance,

  • MSI Media Live cpu support

Hi I don't seem to be able to find the CPU support table for the MSI media Live, all the links I have followed go to 404.
I have tried the motherboard model numbers MS-7329 and MS-6421, bit nowhere is the info available. :(
I am hoping to fit a 4850e, but will I need to flash the bios with another CPU first?

    Quote
I would still like to know what CPUs it supports.
I have contacted MSI and advised them that a CPU support list is missing for this product.
    Quote
Plus any recommendations on a replacement Heatsink and fan.
You do not need to replace the cooling system, it is designed specifically for this custom form factor, and provided you use a suitable CPU (hence why I have requested the CPU list be restored) it is perfectly adequate for the task.
One modification you might want to try, which both myself and Bas have already done, is to reverse the fan itself, so it is blowing upwards, rather than downwards onto the heatsink. This is simple enough to do, the top plastic cover just clips off from the heatsink, and the fan can just be removed and placed upside down.
This has the advantage of 'sucking' heat away from the radiator and out the top of the case, rather than 'pushing' the heat inside the rest of the Media Live itself. Obviously, make sure the top cover of the Media Live is well ventilated itself.

I'm generally pretty tech savvy but this has me stumped and iCloud is ment to be easy to use.

I would not be able to give you idiot proof guide, since different games are different. Some of them have icloud integrated already, but those already taken care of. Some of them use specific logins and once you log - you get your info. General recommendation is to contact support sites of those games for enabling icloud instructions or enabling of transfer. There are other purely apple ways - like sync your phone in itunes and then sync apps with ipad, but those are only one time transfer. There is another way that is not typically recommended - restoring ipad from iphone backup. It may transfer your game content, but once again sync in the future has to be done by game.
So if I were you, I would address that individually with every game provider.
