MSI MS-6738, Win98se & USB

Any ideas for getting a USB key working on an an MSI KM2M Combo Series MS-6738-010 under Win98se?
The key in question is a PNY Attaché 2 USB 2.0.  I've noticed:
- in Windows 98se, it doesn't work (though usb mice do)
- on the same hardware, Linux Knoppix and Xandros handle it automatically
- on a different machine, under XP, it works automatically
- (Linux Mandrake 9.1, 9.2 & 10.1 won't either instal or boot, failing at the usb stage in each case, but that's another problem.)
For Windows, I've downloaded and installed:
- 2 Microsoft fixes for the combination of a fast AMD chip and a VIA Technologies USB controller
- a 900k VIA usbf110 driver
- a 2.2Mb VIAUSB2V242L  upgrade
- a 9.80Mb VIA_USB2_V258p3-L  upgrade
- several different PNY drivers
- updated versions of the aspi drivers
none of which have got it working.  Windows detects it and instals the PNY driver on startup, and the cursor changes when I plug it in, but the device manager reports it's either not present, not working properly or doesn't have all its drivers installed.

Tried the pny driver - which was almost exactly the same size & date as the previous one and gave the same results.
It's probably because I haven't done all the w98 updates ..
Thanks again

  • [VIA] MSI MS-6738, Win2k & USB

Just a word on getting a usb memory key working on an MSI Km2m mobo.
    Under Win98se:
    - usb mice work fine
    - Palm usb doesn't work unless one reinstals the palm software each time one wants to communicate
    - a PNY Attaché 2 USB 2.0 memory key has never worked, even with updates to drivers and os.
Linux Knoppix and Xandros on the other hand have no problems with usb.
The good news is that Windows 2k SP4 also handles all of these, automatically, without installing any more than the Hyperion drivers.
(In similar vein, 2k's power management works where 98se's sometimes crashes.)
    Good day everyone

Latest VIA drivers for USB2.0 controllers dated OCT 2005 (also for Southbridge integrated USB2.0 controllers)
I have the KM2M Combo-L in my main system, still have two of them new in the box (long story).
So far, I've use the following USB devices extensively through the integrated VT8235 USB controller:
-USB Floppy drive (NEC and HP branded)
    -Canon Powershot A40 digicam
    -Canon Powershot A75 digicam
    -Epson Stylus CX6400 AIW Printer
    -Epson Stylus C84 Printer
    -HP OfficeJet 7110 AIW Printer
    -Microtek Scanmaker C6-USB Scanner
-Generic (Sabrent) USB2.0 Multicard Reader (Alcor Micro chip)
-Generic (Syba) USB2.0 Multicard Reader (ICSI chip)
-Generic 2.5" HDD USB2.0 Enclosure (Myson Century chip)
-Kingston Traveler 512MB US2.0 Flash Drive
    -Generic 256MB USB1.1 Flash Drive
-Several USB meeses (generic, Logitech, Microsoft)
-Several USB keyboards (generic, KeyTronic, Microsoft)
The only problems I've had were a couple generic bus-powered USB2.0 hubs I purchased on the cheap.  My DLINK 4-port USB2.0 hub with its own power supply works flawlessly, though I rarely use it (its been in my desk drawer for about three months).  Also, my USB floppy drive sometimes goes on the blink if I plug it in when my Epson CX6400 is connected, it gets installed as generic removable storage volume instead of a floppy.  Unplugging the CX6400 and restarting, then plugging it back in always seems to solve it.
I've used most (but not all) of those on Win98SE, though more extensively on XP.

  • [Vox] MSI VOX TV BOX USB 2.0 problem with audio drivers compatibility

    Ok,let's go...
I have a DELL Latitude d510 laptop with a centrino 1.73 GHz procesor and a soundcard supported by Sigmatel software Sigmatel C-Major audio.I bought MSI VOX TV BOX USB 2.0 and tried to install it on my lap top.Yes,I had problems with SP2 on my XP and the MSIVPS software from the instalation CD was crashing every time I tried to start it,but I solved those problems by downloading the latest drivers and the 3.xx version of MSIPVS.But...I still have a problem with audio. To be precise it seems that my audio drivers are incompatible with the VOX drivers. So now I have video but I don't have audio. Also I installed the tv card on my desktop machine and it worked like a charm(everything workes:audio, video, the old MSIPVS which I like better than the new one cause it supports my remote, has better way of managing scanned channels,e.t.c ,but I have USB 1.1 on my MB so the image quality is very poor).I did a lot of experimenting, for example i uninstaled my audio drivers(that Sigmatel C-Major thing),and installed the old MSIVPS and guess what...IT WORKED but there is no use from this cause I don't have audio On the other hand if I have everything installed then in the MSIVPS (the 3.xx version not the old one) under audio I get CD Player as an input audio device(what happened with microphone...?).To cut the long story short I tried a bunch of things and still no audio. Is there any other case of DELL audio software-VOX incompatibility?Any ideas,or solutions?

thank you for answering me. y have no pci card working, only usb 2.0 and sata devices. also, the MSI geforce 9600gt PExp 2.0 gpu. the only usb 2.0 devices which work, are the flash (pen) drives, keyboard and mouse. but no way that the WLAn adapter and TVcapture, both usb 2.0 work.i've  tested them front side and rear side and is the same failure: if i use a pendrive, works ok. if i insert the wlan or the tv capture stop work as the 2.0 and a advertising window tell me to change to a 2.0 port, means the ports are working slower, at 1.1.  i still have the other PC, built on the MSI K9N4-slif mobo, tested them and both devices work at perfection.  i have 2 screenshots to show you:
this, is the device manager (sorry, in spanish but you understand that's about the nVIDIA EHCI USB 2.0 controller. the 2nd one seems to be more sensitive (works worth) then the first one. when the tvcapture begin work, then fails, i'm trying to update this controller, does it ok but then the devicemanager-window freeze. i must stroke the "enter" key to "accept" / finish the update. then, fails again:
the other one is from everest corporate edition:
both drivers marked with purple colour!
i think i should update this Win XP drivers, but how? the usbport.inf file (C:\Windows\inf) don't change anything. i don't want to switch xp to vista, i'm happy whit it.
i'm thinking also on another possibility: could be an energy failure? some usb devices, like the big usb flash dives. 250-320gb, fail because the 5v/usb are receiving it's not enough. could be, but that means this mobo has no solution and i'll loose my money.
thank you very much and i'll stay alert of your suggestions. by

  • MSI P67A-C43 (B3) USB not working but theres a twist! Help!

:lol_anim:I Have built a new rig with the MSI P67A-C43 (B3) Motherboard, 16GB DDR3 PC3-10600 1333MHz Memory (4GB x 4), Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz 6M LGA1155 Processor, 550 Watt 80 PLUS Bronze Power Supply,24x DVDRW, 3.5" Internal Card Reader with 2 USB ports,    500GB 7200RPM 3.5" SATA Hard Drive(which i plan on upgrading just didnt want to waste money on the shitty HD they had.....
So down to the nitty gritty  . My computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, i have downloaded all of the updates and all of the Chip-set drivers, Bios, etc... i ran a system registry tool to clean up any errors in my registry and i have ALL of my drivers up to date.
I have my USB mouse and keyboard that connect fine and are recognized by my computer, sometimes they stop working and start back up within seconds but windows does display any type of error or disconnection "this may have been fixed due to the registry cleaner i used i haven't had any hiccups yet" so i have my USB mouse and USB keyboard working fine and dandy now i think. got a new headset and the windows finds the USB Headset and it works Perfectly fine. BUT and this is where my whole frustration comes out. Whenever i connect my I-Pod Touch, I-Pod Nano, My Cell phone to copy files to from my SD Card, or my External My Passport drive Windows says "USB Device was not recognized" notification and in the Device manager it shows the one device with a yellow exclamation point and says "Unknown Device" I have tried to uninstall the USB hubs and reinstalled them perfectly restarted windows, still non of the devices work. i have tried making sure that windows tries not to turn off the device to save power, when i say i have tried almost everything i mean everything that is related with USB Device not Recognized. So i do not know what to do now, i have contacted the Manufacturer and they don't know squat about it or what could be causing it. the only thing i can think of is there is some hardware maybe that is not compatible i do hear some beeps when i start up i will have to come back and update how many beeps" i saw another post that it means the motherboard is trying to tell me something maybe this could be the issue. but i have tried every single usb port and non of them Recognize the device but when i plus in my mouse and keyboard in diff ports they still work so i am a bit confused. my last step is to return the computer to the manufacturer for a replacement or repair w/e i do not want to do this cause this should be working. my friend has almost the exact same MB and equipment and his works fine so i am getting a little frustrated with the issue Someone Pls Help me out. And yes i have tried turning off the computer, unplugging it and pressing the power button, and waiting like 1 Hour etc and still nothing. Drivers are Up-to-Date and Mother board bios and chip-set drivers are Up-to-Date as well. I hope someone knows or has an answer to help me out!

Yes the Bios is Up-to-Date and they are not plugged into the Blue USB 3.0 ports(x2). oh and forgot to mention already did a clean install again of Windows 7 64bit and still nothing.  Im also wondering if the power supply is enough?? maybe?

  • MSI 865PE Neo2 and USB WD (MY BOOK) external HDD

Ok, so recently i went out an brought a My Book. I plugged it in and formatted it.. Next morning i came out turned of my PC and the computer hung during POST. after a few attempts at booting the PC up, i unplugged the MY BOOK from the USB port and rebooted, made myself a coffee and came back, sure enough the PC was sitting in windows.
So i did a bit of research and found that for some reason, when the PC is booting, it try's either reading from the MY BOOK during HDD detection and then at the end of the ON BOARD PATA/SATA HDD detection it 'Recycles' the USB ports, which crashes POST.
My main point of getting an EXTERNAL HDD is portability, so i can back my DATA up, but i also am going to use it as another drive on the computer.
So for my to be playing around, unplugging and plugging back in the Drive everytime the computer boots its sort of. well, not what i had in mind.
Im at a lost of how to fix it and that why i turn to you.

Hay ya Tzare, i've been playing for ages! still no luck!
the best i've got it i've put an inline switch to basically turn power off to the HDD. so i only turn it on when i need it.
i've tried a few little... crazy things. but with no luck! on involved a 1F 5.5V cap across the GND and 5VDC coming from the USB. oddly without GND connected it works!! but the cap keeps the HDD running forever! i read my multi-meter wrong, i thought it said .33A draw. it was actually 0.33mA, so really it wasnt even 1mA.... sigh!
i've tryed my luck with MSI and they say contact WD, and WD say contact MSI.
Im thinking the only real way to solve this is upgrade the motherboard. which also means upgrading the RAM and CPU and any AGP card. so really it will cos around... alot.
    SO, problem still unresolved!..
Hay, you've got a switch on yours! that a bit better than me! LOL. (until recently)

  • MSI 975X PUE + MSI StarHub 7-port USB 2.0 + Windows XP SP3 = Fail

    Hi,
today I bought a MSI StarHub and connected it to my computer with MSI 975X PUE and Win XP SP3. But XP does not recognize the hub. On the same computer I have Win 7 installed. There the hub works very well. Any hints to get the hub working on XP? I have same problems with my mouse, logitech G500. It works on WIN 7 and does not work on XP. What can I do?
    Regards

There was no driver for the StarHub included and I did not find a driver to download on the msi homepage. When running Win7 the hub is shown as Generic USB Device in the device manager on xp it is a USB 2.0 HUB [mtt] and I do not have the driver for this.
I installed the logitech G500 driver on both, win xp and win 7, but xp does not recognize it.

  • MSI Btoes - BlueTooth PC2PC USB Dongle

    Hi...
I have a problem with MSI BlueTooth USB Dongle.... When I install software my computer cant recognize my USB hardware. Cant find driver.....
    Any help??!???!??!
I try 3 same peaces and all are the same....
    TNH

After several hours trying to get BToes to work in Windows XP Pro, with problems similar to those described above, I seem to have finally succeeded in getting it to work. Hopefully the following guidelines may be useful to others. If you are not confident editing the registry, don't proceed any further!
    1. Log in to Win XP as Administrator.
    2. Install BToes software as per instructions.
    3. Run REGEDT32.
    4. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software, right click on the Microstar key and choose "Permissions...". In the permissions dialog, look in the Group name or User name box for your normal account or the "Users" group, and then set Permissions to Full Control. Close the dialog.
    5. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software, right click on the Widcomm key and choose "Permissions...". In the permissions dialog, look in the Group name or User name box for your normal account or the "Users" group, and then set Permissions to Full Control. Close the dialog.
    6. Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software, right click on the Widcomm key and choose "Permissions...". In the permissions dialog, look in the Group name or User name box for your normal account or the "Users" group, and then set Permissions to Full Control. Close the dialog.
    7. Right click again and choose Export. Save the key to a file, e.g. widcomm.reg, on C:\ (don't use default administrator folder, you'll not be able to access it later).
    8. Close REGEDT32.
    9. Restart PC.
    10. Log in to Win XP using your usual account.
    11. Run REGEDT32.
    12. Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software, right click on the Widcomm key and choose "Permissions...". In the permissions dialog, look in the Group name or User name box for the "Users" group, and then set Permissions to Full Control. Close the dialog.
    13. From File menu choose Import to import c:\widcomm.reg (saved in 7).
    14. Close REGEDT32.
    15. BToes should now work.
N.B. when you log in to your usual account again, you may get an error saying something like it cannot load a profile and it has connected to the default. To fix this, go into the Bluetooth Advanced Configuration. Then under Local Services, find File Transfer in the list of services and click Properties button. In here, change the Exchange folder to one that your account can access (it default setting is to a folder in the Administrator account, to which you don't have access).

    Hi,
What about if you try to install drivers from your product's page?
    http://uk.msi.com/support/mb/Z97-GAMING-5.html#down-driver
And when exactly it starts to fail to work? Did you try to have OS just installed, restart it and see if it works then? Are you able to determine which driver installation causes USBs to stop working?
    thank you
i just remove USB3 controller driver and work
    thank you all :D

  • MSI PVS VOX MS8609 USB 2.0 TV Tuner Box

I don't know if this is the correct category or not, but this concerns the product at this web page http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/multimedia/mut/pro_mut_detail.php?UID=536
I just bought it and at first it worked fine, really sharp picture from cable.  I left it running plugged into my Toshiba M35X Windows XP home  notebook for a couple of hours, then the picture went to static.  The next day, I tried again and the best it will do is a jerky, incomplete, out of focus picture with "shattered" colored pixels.  I removed the driver and MSIPVS software and reinstalled it from the CD a couple of times.  Also tried re-booting, re-loading etc and even tried installing the latest driver vox_1.1.0505.0 and no improvement.
I connect the same coax to my desktop PC which has Pixel View PCI Play TV PVR; great picture and always works.  Even with WinDVR recorder.
I really like the neat package of the MSI VOX and I hope I can get it to work reliably.  Anybody have one of these and experience with same problem?
Maybe my MSI VOX went bad?

Reply #6 is probably correct. Many usb ports don't supply(can't darw) sufficient current to drive power hungry usb devices(e.g laptop hard drives..and MSI VOX is probably another example).
The solution is to have powered usb hub, that will give you 500m AMP each port(it drives my 80gb usb 2.5" hard drive without problem).
Or make sure that the mother board is using a Nvidia chipset, for Pentium you should have ICH4(hope I got the name correct), then you plug the usb device in the root hub.
I am waiting for the Leaktek TV tuner USB 2.0 deluxe, it should be available within the next 2 months(it is already selling in Australia, New Zealand, Europe..). This unit is powered, and has 3 more open usb 2.0 ports on it, so you can use it as a TV tuner and a powered usb hub. This unit is very portable...not much larger than MSI VOX.
If those are not available, then I will consider buying the Vox..now that I know I have to make sure there is sufficient power.
My other question on the VOX is minimum system requuirement. Many system requires 2 gb processor or above. The Leaktek system requires only PII 550 for watching TV...that means it should work with most of the recent computers on the market.

  • MSI GT70 2PC Dominator USB 3.0 Issues

    Hey folks,
Hopefully somebody can be of assistance, me and my friend both purchased the MSI GT70 2PC a couple of months ago, fantastic laptop by the way. The only issue that both of us have been experiencing is with the USB 3.0 ports.
The problem is that when we connect a USB 3.0 External HDD it occasionally works fine but more often than not it will continually connect and disconnect almost as if it is not getting the correct amount of power. Now we both work in a computer repair shop so we have tried all of the basics, ensuring drivers are up to date, changing the HDD cable and due to where we work we have managed to test over 5 different brands of USB 3.0 external drives, used and brand new, all of which work fine on other computers via USB 3.0
Having read a few posts it seems that others have experienced this but there is no solution that I have found. Is there something we have missed or is this awaiting a driver update? The laptop is fantastic for my development needs however a £1300 laptop that can't reliably connect to a USB 3.0 drive is somewhat disappointing - I remain optimistic that there is indeed a solution!
Thankyou in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hello markusbarrot,
The USB 3.0 high-speed electric signal is easy to be interfered and this will make the device suffer intermittent connections/disconnections. Not every USB 3.0 device suffered by this. It depends on the quality of the circuits between the USB device and the mainboard of the laptop.
    1. Suggest you get a shorter USB 3.0 cable or an interference-resisted (magnetic shield) USB 3.0 cable. Some problems can be resolved by this.
    2. Update the firmware of your external USB devices. Some problems can be resolved by this.
    3. Return the laptop to the MSI authorized service providers or your local dealers for inspection on the USB ports. They can make sure your USB ports do work in the spec. or not.

  • MSI Wind PC barebone usb problem

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with a new MSI Wind barebone pc I just purchased.  The USB ports only work in full speed instead of high speed (USB 2.0) mode.
I don't think I had this problem before the bios update.  I updated the bios to the latest rev because of a problem with s3 mode.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Thanks for the advice.  I have another one on order to test my current OS install.  Hopefully, it will show that it is a motherboard chip issue and should qualify for a Newegg RMA.  I've built many PCs over the year, and I have not had this much difficulty in getting them to work properly.  The MSI PC Wind nettop seems like a good replacement for my several Shuttle XPC's (3 - 6 years old) that have reached their upgrade limits.  In the past three months, I've had to replace their special power supplies at over $80 a pop.  Newegg is selling the Wind for $140, and it seems to be a cost effective and "green" alternative to replacing power supplies.  I'll post the results of the replacement PC Wind in resolving this USB 2 issue.  Thanks again.

  • Default MSI Z87-G45 Lan/Usb Help needed.

    Hello,
So yesterday i massively upgraded my pc with the following components:
    MSI Z87-G45
    Intel Core i5-4670K
    GeForce GTX 780 3GB (Classified)
and kept my old Ram (Gskill ripjaw ddr3 3x4gb) ,Hd's PSU. and i am using windows 8.1
The main problems i am having are as follows:
    1. I am unable to get the usb ports to recognize most things i plug in. This included a USB flash drive and a wireless network stick.
    2. I am unable to install any Lan items from the mobo factory disc. The option to install the LAN drivers are greyed out on the disc menu, and when i search for them they will not install. Now i've found them online and downloaded them to a Usb Drive, but i can't use that because the USB drive won't be recognized by windows.
Any help on these issues would be so greatly appreciated, i am getting terribly frustrated and don't know what to do.
I have checked the Bios and it appears to be current, i have also reset the Mobo battery at the request of MSI.

have you done a new fresh OS installation after mainboard change?

  • MSI K8N Neo2 and USB 2.0

Does this MB have USB 2.0? When I plug in my iPod it says that the device could run faster if I plugged it into a USB 2.0 port. How do I fix this? Thanks
    Chris

    Gadgets,
Before you update your BIOS please do following:
1- Insure that you do not have older legacy USB peripherals (V 1.X) plugged in next to your Ipod 2.0 USB connection.  Pluging in a USB 1.x connector next to a USB 2.0 connector can drag all transfers to the lowest USB 1.x transfer rate.
2- Do not guess at your USB transfwer rate. Download Sandra Lite 2005 (SR3) from Sisoftware here (it's free): http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=177
once you done so install it and use the File System Benchmark program to find out exactly what your Ipod USB connection is achieving in MB/s. A USB 2.0 connection should give you a 32 or greater MB/s transfer rate.
3- Don't MESS with your BIOS UNTIL YOU are absolutely sure of the procedures to follow.  Here is some reference links:
