MSI MSI DKA790GX Bios update problem

Recently set up a MSI MSI DKA790GX system with a new X4 940. Thing is it appears the bios is 1.2 which seems pretty old at this point. I've been trying to update to the latest bios (1.6 ?) but I can't. Live Update tells me there is a check-sum error. I assume the issue is with the 1.6 bios. I tried using the HQ USB Flashing Tool method and I got the same error. SO I got to assume that something is wrong with the bios file.
Has anyone else tried to update this board with the latest bios? Any luck.
This is annoying as I want to update the bios as I'm several revisions back and I want my new processor to be FULLY recognized.
TIA

  • MSI sli plus bios update problems

I have an x99 sli plus and was working perfectly untill latest I updated latest bios (1.5 I think). Updated ok restarted but wouldn't post so manual restart. Restarted fine into windows but cpu temp signal was reading way to low. Then I had checked OC setting and found everything was on base clock. Restarted into bios and loaded my saved 24/7 OC, restarted and nothing. Screen not even turning on. Fan is running on low but nothing no post etc. Tried switching to other bios with switch, same result. Heeelllp

This sounds like the same problem as mine. I updated from 1.4 -> 1.5 and restored a profile and it refused to boot, no display, fans on.
In my case, the CPU and one stick of RAM fried, I hope your situation ends without dead hardware. I would also like that if MSI takes a look at the profiles system and see if there is some bug with restoring settings across BIOS versions (in my case, profile was created on 1.4).
Hope not  but I'm starting to think some hardware has been damaged.
Quote from: Svet on 01-January-15, 22:39:19
think profiles should be used only within the same BIOS version
when you switch to new BIOS, you have to recreate the OC profile and to save it again
remove power cord from the PSU 1st,
then press power button several times, until all lights stop lightning.
then do again >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
Did what you suggested no change.
I get what you are saying about the oc profiles, but it was a very mild oc (4.5 at 1.24v and xmp enabled for the ram) and then just fan profiles. Seems insane that would (finger crossed it hasn't) destroy hardware straight away. And if its just that a profile saved in another version of the bios does hardware damage no matter what the settings seems even more crazy.

  • MSI z77a GD80 PCI-e running at 8x and Bios update problem

Hi guys, first of all, sorry for my bad English, this is also my first topic, i recently bought a new PC, the spec is:
    i7 3770k @4,3ghz
    Corsair H80
    MSI z77a GD80 bios 1.2
    GTX 680 lightning
    8gb ddr3 1600mhz cas9 G.Skill
    1TB HDD WD Caviar Black
    Asus xonar DX
The problem is, since the first bios, i can't run my PCI-E at 16x, i know when my card is idle the PCI-E goes to 1.1@4x , but when it's in use, it turns to PCI-E 3.0@8x   , I'm also waiting for bios updates to check if it solves my problem, but when i try to download the new version 1.3, the download fails ( I'm trying to download with Live update 5 )m is there somebody that can help me solve this problem pls?
    I've tried until now:
Replace the card into the first PCI-E slot again
    Clear the PCI-E slot
Update to bios 1.1 and 1.2 ( 1.3 is not even downloading )
Set PCI Gen 3 from Auto to disable, and it keeps running with PCI-E 3.0@8x
    Thx for any help !

As per the manual, the VGA must be in the primary slot to run 16X. BIOS setting for graphics 3.0 should be set to Auto.
    Do not use Live Update for BIOS updates. Too many borked boards are the result. Use the forum's USB method;
      >> Forum Flash Method <<
Just curious. If I installed Add-on card that run at PCI-E 4X on 3rd slot (2nd slot is empty) what's configuration will apply ?

  • MSI GT70 2PC Bios update (Legacy mode)

    Hi!
    I've got a GT70 2PC notebook with Win7 64bits installed, and I want to update its BIOS.
I've downloaded the last version (117 version, I think, because I haven't got RAID), but I couldn't update it, because its BIOS files are to UEFI Bios update, not the DOS version.... I haven't got the Flash.bat file to update it, only a file called "E1763IMS.117"...
    What should I do?
    Thanks a lot

    Greetings:
I need  help, i was updating the BIOS of my laptop msi gt70 2od-039us (dragon Editon2) WIN 8 then upgraded to 8.1  with this: E1763IMS.717.zip exactly as shown in pdf of site msi bios download.... I did step by Step, but in the step 12. BIOS info says: “System will power off and then power on automatically”…
The laptop, goes off, then appears black screen, cooler spins but never enter in the flash screen.
Please help me how i restart my laptop again, it’s possible or i need to buy a new motherboard?
    Thanks.
PD: I unplugged the battery CMOS and turn it on but still is in black screen. PLEASE HELP!!!!

  • Msi 970a-g46 - BIOS update got interrupted, screen is now perma black

So recently my computer has started having issues where it will just freeze out of nowhere leaving me only with sound, no mouse, no keyboard, i believe a still image on the screen (cant tell due to the mouse/keyboard).
Either way, so i figured i would go about and update all of my drivers, while updating my BIOS drivers, my computer had one of these freezes and i was careless enough to hit the restart button...
So now whenever i try and boot my computer, i am left with a pure black screen, and nothing else...
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Piers.

Quote from: Froggy Gremlin on 27-May-13, 09:00:08
    Try a battery removed CMOS clear and reset. The freeze may have been RAM, PSU, VGA related. A BIOS update is firmware, etc., no drivers involved. A list of system components may be of help in the troubleshooting process;
      >> Posting Guide <<
So after doing that, i plugged it back in, and got a long squealing beep tone so i immediately unplugged it... im also a huge retard, and powered it on while i had the jumpers on clear data... i feel retarded and i hope i didn't just break my motherboard even more... D':

Pls note that bios v2 can be updated only if you using Windows 8. Otherway update will fail, and your mobo is "bricked"

  • MSI X79MA-GD45 BIOS/boot problems.

Hi I've been having problems getting my board to boot consistently.
    System specs are:
    MB: MSI X79MA-GD45 (BIOS 3.1)
    CPU: Intel 3820 (C2 stepping)
RAM: 32GB (4x8GB) Kingston HyperX Beast 2400MHz (Running 1333MHz, auto)
    GPU: Zotac GTX 680 4GB
    PSU: Corsair 860i
Most times I have to clear CMOS before the system will boot.
Soft reboots are fine, however, if I change stuff that requires a proper reboot, fx enabling VT-x, the system will need a clear CMOS again before it will boot.
The error I get seems to be videocard related, 1 long 2 short beeps, however the videocard works fine in my old system.
I can usually get the system to behave for a little while by reflashing BIOS.
After clearing CMOS the system boots EVERY time and runs flawless.
PS prior to BIOS 3.1 multiplier 43x (and 44x, partially) were working, now it seems to max out at 42 (regardless of BIOS setting) but this isnt really an issue as much as the system instability at stock settings.
edit: corrected BIOS error beep typo

In combination with an i7-3820 the new Win8 bios versions for all X79 boards seem to be troublesome (that's also the reason for the multi limit).
Downgrade to the prior version (1.7) with the attached archive and retry.
For flashing >>use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<< and with it point to the attached and NOT unpacked bios archive (Mode 1: Point to archive).

  • KT4 Ultra-B BIOS Update problem

Well, I runned Live Update BIOS and found out that I didn't have the newest version. So i downloaded the newest (1.4), and followed the instruction for the installation. After it was installed, every thing seemed okay. Untill I started the PC, then I got an 'error' message:
    CMOS Settings Wrong
    Press F1 to Run SETUP
Press F2 to load default values and continue
I checked the CMOS Settings, nothing I could find was wrong. So everytime I start the PC I have to press F2, or else it won't start, it will just jump back to that message. This is not so much of a problem, but when I have to use the default values from now on it _IS_ a problem, because default FSB is 100MHz, and I loose alot of CPU. I now have AMD Athlon 1500+ 1,35GHz because of that BIOS update. What I really should have is AMD Athlon 2200+ 1,8GHz.
So anyone that could help me with this problem ??

There is a reason why it did not work.
When you buy a board and put a CPU in it, the board may not detect the CPU correctly,
So if your cpu was a 1470Mhz Athlon and the board detected it as 2.2Ghz what would happen?
The CPU would try to run at 2200Mhz and blow up
So manufacturers such as MSI set the CPU FSB to 100Mhz, must modern CPUs run at 166Mhz so by having it at 100Mhz you prevent the board from overclocking the CPU.
Do you see how that is a safety feature?
Now when you flash a BIOS you clear all your settings and the board gets reset to the safety defaults (100Mhz). This also happens when you clear the CMOS using the jumper, thats why it did not work
I assume someone else originally setup the motherboard and CPU settings for you?

However if you need BIOS update prior to have some RAM or GPU working fine (or other stuff), then maybe consider updating to 1.6 and then to 1.9 and finally to 1.B (1.11). I suggest using MFlash (files can be downloaded on MSI's product site, instructions should be included). For Forum Flash tool you need proper files provided (usually) by Svet or Flobelix.
Before attempting to flash, make sure your system is stable!
I downloaded BIOS 1,5 and 1,6 and in both cases i have same issue it stucks on 100% on M-Flash, after this I can normaly shut down pc and it work but witch 1.4 BIOS. I just want know whyi can;t
    updtate.

  • K72NG-ILSR bios update problem.

I installed a new hard drive and reinstalled windows XP.  I downloaded the latest version of Live update and ran it.  it stated there was one new BIOS update available. I ran the BIOS update through Live update, it downloaded and installed the bios update and then asked me if I wanted to restart the computer.
I selected yes, restart the computer, the computer restarted and just started beeping at me.  I got no post.  I powered down and restarted again, I get no post, no nothing. I can't get it to boot from floppy.
I tried clearing CMOS and I am still getting no post, nothing.
    Any suggestions?

Take the battery out in the motherboard for 10 minutes, put it back and see if the pc boots again.
if not, contact the seller to change the board or contact MSI to RMA the board.

    Hi buddy,
You should check the forum content or with other words, use the forum search firstly before you ask something. Failed BIOS update is not unusual and can happen always. The forum contains already a lot threads about this and the only solution is contacting an ASP. The guys have professional tools to recover it.

  • Thinkpad Yoga BIOS Update Problem after installing Windows 10

Hi all, I've been reading tonnes of threads here trying to solve my problems (which seem to keep getting worse) to no avail. I'm reaching out to anyone that can suggest some help before I end up bricking my yoga by accident or running it over on purpose. I'll give you a timeline of the events. The machine in question is a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 12.5" 20CD-0032USIntel Core i5 4200U 1.60GHz Processor4GB Ram128GB SSDWindows 8.1 64 Bit preloaded (recently upgraded to Windows 10) So the saga begun just a short two days ago. I had some spare time at home and decided to download and install my free upgrade to Windows 10. I backed up all of my important documents etc to OneDrive as I intended on performing a clean install. Said clean install went flawlessly with Windows 10 installing the first time with no issues or errors. Since I had performed a clean install, all my previous apps, including the stock Lenovo apps, had been deleted. I had anticipated this and only really desired to reinstall the app that automatically adjusts the screen orientation when folding the cover back. So in an effort to find this app and any Windows 10 related updates that may be available I went to support.lenovo.com and used the handy Lenovo Bridge app to automatically detect my hardware and suggest relevant updates. While combing through the suggested software I noticed a BIOS update that noted added support for Windows 10. How great, I thought, that Lenovo would have a BIOS update ready so quickly once 10 became ready for mass consumption. I went ahead and downloaded the exe version (not the bootable CD due to the lack of CD drive on the Yoga) and ran the BIOS update. As I ran the update the laptop was plugged in, and no errors were presented, a success message appeared and indicated a reboot was necessary, after a couple seconds the system rebooted itself. Enter nightmare level 1. As soon as the system rebooted, I fired up IE about to look for more updates and......BSOD stating that there was and issue with a driver, after another reboot BSOD again with a completely different file name stating driver file missing or corrupt. Sorry I didn't write any of the file names or errors down. At this point I'm thinking that something is not jiving here between the BIOS and OS. So I tried running repair, and recovery and each time I would end up with a BSOD of some design. It was at this point I made a USB with the Windows 10 x64 ISO from Microsoft in an attempt to run the repair utilities from the USB. Again to no avail. Enter nightmare level 2 After attempting multiple tries at recovering Windows 10 and getting multiple BSOD's through the process I decided to use my Windows 10 USB to simply reformat my hard drive to eliminate any traces of my now apparently corrupt OS and do a fresh install of Windows 10. This appears to have been a significant error on my part. Now I have no OS (BIOS is still intact so at least I think I have a not-bricked motherboard) and everytime I try to boot Windows 10, or 8.1 for that matter, from a brand new USB stick I get constant BSOD's.Sometimes I get as far as the Preparing installation files 22% but am interrupted by a BSOD error at some point. So I am pleading for some help here. To me it seems like the BIOS update was the issue. I was not smart enough to have checked the BIOS version before updating so that I would know what to roll back to safely. What would you all recommend for a rollback and how do I go about doing one with no OS on the machine. I know I'm asking for a tl;dr here but appreciate any advice offered. I really dont want to get to nightmare level 3, which I guess would be a bricked laptop and a bill for a new motherboard or laptop. The BIOS I currently have is GQET45WW (1.25) -Garrett

Thanks for the reply ColonelONeill, It turns out that Lenovo uses an obscure PERL disk image called "eltorito". As such the directions in the link you provided did not work as most common tools (WinZip, 7zip, and WinRAR) cannot extract the image file from an eltorito iso file.  I instead just bucked up for a $50.00 Asus USB CD drive and burned the iso for version 1.25 and 1.24 onto discs. I then disabled the setting in the BIOS that prevents rolling back to a previous version and flashed to 1.24 from the disc. While this appeared to go successfully, as soon as I tried to boot from my Windows 8.1 CD I start receiving BSOD's again during installation. I then used the CD with 1.25 to go back to where I was in case it was simply a bad BIOS update at the time. Most of the BSOD's are driver related (qlfcoei.sys) which I don't understand since there is no OS other than what is on the bootable CD (or USB I've tried both) Is there anyone with a stable install of Win 8.1 x64 or 10 x64 running on a 20CD0032US that can tell me what version of BIOS they are running? My next step is to go back to a version that someone else can verify is working. Thanks again for any help.

    Dokie!!
IMHO if your not having a problem, you don't need to up date the BIOS. That is a very serious procedure and can end in a bricked PC if not done exactly right.
