MSI N580GTX SLI Compatibility

Hi,
I want to sell my MSI N580GTX Twin Frozr III Power Edition.
Someone want to buy it for SLI, but the problem that he got an MSI N580GTX Lightning Edition
From the outside they look exactly the same, but is SLI possible between those two GPU ?

Hi Meyo,
I cannot answer/reply your PM (no rights???) so i will answer you here.
I still don't know for sure if it will work, the only difference is that de Lightning has more seperate power fases.
It basicly is the same PCB only the Lightning is more robust and has a higher default clock.
Anyhoe, i finally did find another lightning card!!!.
Ashame that i need a bigger PSU now
My current PSU is the "Scythe Chouriki 2 850W" but when i start to overclock mildly say, 925/1850/2250, the PSU pulls with max benchmarking (Prime95+Furmark) 838W uit of the wall sockett (just the cord from the PSU, monitor and sutch are not calculated in the 838W)
Anyone have a good suggestion for a 1KW PSU?

  • Help - How to Update Bios on MSI N580GTX SLI

I have searched and all I ever see are instructions about updating the BIOS on the Mobo.
I have two MSI N580GTX that I "think" I need to update the Bios. For some reason LiveUpdate 5 doesnt do a thing when updating in Windows.
    System Specs:
    W764 Ultimate
    AMD Phenom II X4 970
    MSI NF980-G65 (MS-7612) v1.4
MSI N580GTX (SLI) Bios Version 70.10.17.00.01
What are the steps ? For Video Cards ?

To your edited and add-ed info:

The Cards are N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC that came with 822 MHz Core
    Quote
However though it rolled back the clock ? Why was this when out of box it was 822 ?
Because of outdated VBIOS of the card{s}.
800, 4096 are correct one for your cards:

DDR2-1250 is an overclocking rating.  The memory modules should run fine @DDR2-800.  Maybe you can stably overclock the modules to higher speeds, however, nobody can really guarantee you that those sticks will be able to operate @DDR2-1250 (625 MHz) on this board/chipset.

  • MSI N580GTX Twin Frozr II SLi Game Crashing

I bought 2 of these cards in my new system and installed the 266.58 drivers and I haven't had them work properly yet as they always seem to crash somewhere between a few seconds and 5 minutes into a game. Games include Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Just Cause 2, Metro 2033 (DX11), AVP (DX11) and Dirt 2 (DX11). I have been tearing my hair out trying to work out what the problem is. I am guessing voltage but am not sure. I have downloaded Afterburner 2.1 Beta 7 and it seems to set the cards to 822,1645, 2138 and 1.05v. I also uninstalled the newest drivers and did drier sweeper and installed 263.09 and have exactly the same problem. Svet do you have any idea on what I could try ? Many thanks in advance...

Ok so I played JC2 for about an hour and Crysis Warhead for about 30 mins and no crashes. I did experience some lag - noticable in parts of Warhead where the frames dropped considerably. Neither game was butter smooth. I am gaming at 2560x1600 with everything to the max. So do you suggest I test the other card now or is there something I can do to improve the performance of this one ? Thanks again for all your help Svet.
That one is working well then.

I have also played through Metro 2033 for a while and no crashes there either. I will test the other card tomorrow by itself when I get some time.
yes, test the second one now [also alone], with the same tests

  • Update on Pentium D 930 + MSI P6N SLi Mobo

A short time ago I was searching this forum for information concerning the compatibility of the Pentium D 930 processor with the MSI P6N Sli Mobo. It seems that this processor was not officially supported for this board. A few helpful people offered the opinion that they would likely work just fine together. I just wanted to get back to you guys and say thank you again, that turned out to be exactly the case.  :D
After an embarrassing no-post situation caused by the leftover mounting  spacers from my old board (which used 12) to my present board (which uses 9), everything went smoothly. Acronis with Universal restore allowed me to regenerate my operating system. After a lengthy update of drivers the computer was up and running smoothly and with a entirely welcome but somewhat puzzling difference. Whereas the old board (D945PVS) consistently provided an environment in which the CPU ran at 50°+ C (?!) and had transient temperatures as high as 58 - 59° C with an ambient 20° C, the new set up consistently ran below 40°. These results were consistent no matter what type of thermal pastes were used, be they my homebrewed colloidal silver in silicone stopco*k  grease or Arctic Silver.  (that's hilarious... the anti-obscenity software interpreted a fully normal English language word as obscenity)
    Well, whatever the reason....sweet.
I have only attempted simpleminded overclocking as the options are somewhat limited by the processor. With the frequency for the GPU locked at 100 MHz, simply adjusting the FSB to 1000 raised the apparent speed of the CPU to 3.75 GHz, up from the stock frequency of 3 GHz. An attempt to set the front side bus at 1060 resulted in a non-bootable system so back to 1000 it went.
I have not adjusted any of the system voltages. So far I have not stress tested this other than to simply use the computer for several hours. No apparent problems yet. The system temperatures have remained between 38 and 40° C in an ambient 20°C environment.
The only thing that nags at me, and I'm fairly sure that this is of no importance is the fact that in device manager the CPUs show yellow exclamation marks and in properties I see a message saying that certain drivers failed to load for the CPU and that other software may be taking their place. Well, whatever this actually means, it has had no detectable impact on system performance or reliability.

    Hiya flobelix
If by manually updating the drivers you mean by left clicking on them in device manager and selecting update --> search online, then yes, I did. I do not have the exact verbiage but the resultant error message was something to the effect that the drivers had installed but failed to start and something else may be taking their place.
Driver magician fails to detect that any cpu drivers are missing. Same with online testing services such as PC pitstop. | have done a cursory search using Google to find people with similar problems but I have not as of yet seen this EXACT problem.

Playing aan entire level of Crysis or Crysis2 with extreme settings is a very sure way to test. A multiplayer round of BF3 at max settings is also a good test.
If you got the max stable clockrates without overvolting and temps are fine. Go on adding voltage in small steps and agin try the highest max clockrate of any voltage step. That way you'll find the total max clockrate. At some point adding voltage will have no effect anymore and that is the highest clockrate. Remember that voltage unlike just higher clockrates will increase the temps massively.
    Agreed with flobelix
Crysis 2 with ultra setting and set Vsync to Disabled is a very hard test in real life application, I don't use furmark or kombustor. To test stability first I run Vantage and 3DMark2011 then playing Crysis 2 about 2 - 3 hours every day for aweek or 2 weeks and if pass then I call it stable
I use GTX580 Lightning and at stock volt I can do 920/2200 with all little DIP switches turned ON/Enabled/Unlocked excluding Xtreme cooling LN2 DIP switch since I use normal air cooling and not LN2. If I let all DIP switches to their stock/OFF even at 900MHz I can't pass Vantage.
For safe daily OC better stay under 80c for your core temp and under 70c for your VRM & Memory temp  also do not use beyond +200mv for your core voltage (+200mv is the max value)
Note : For 24/7 I use 980/2300 with +112mv/+40mv. VRM and memory temp are under 60c and Core temp is under 80c.

Now, I hooked everything up, turned the power supply power on, and a beautiful LED light on the motherboard started to shine proudly.  Basking in the glow of my orange LED, I confidently pushed the power button on the case, to find... nothing.  No fans started, no whirring of the HD, just silence.  I double and triple checked the cord going from the motherboard to the power switch, turned it around, begged it, but can't get any response from the motherboard.  I was looking into if my power supply was compatable with my motherboard, and it seems like it should be.  Does anyone have any ideas of what else I can check?

    Quote from: tnt1 on 22-March-07, 10:34:43
Two different specs. The motherboard is designed to handle either the 8 pin or 4 pin cpu connector. Did you hook up the 4 pin? Did you use the 20+4 for the main ATX? Is the power supply set to 115v? (may say 110v or 120v)
Also are you certain you have connected the power switch correctly to the motherboard. (You can try jumping the pins with a screwdriver). Recheck the manual and make sure you are using the correct pins. Also disconnect the reset switch just to make sure it is not stuck in a reset state.
Try with motherboard out of the case. (It may be grounded)
    Try with minimal components.
    Reseat the CPU.
Well, I tried all of these.  I re-seated the processor, which looked fine originally, stripped out everything except the processor, RAM, and video card, re-connected all of the power cords, took the motherboard out of the case, and jumped the pins with a trusty pair of scissors.
Success!  It booted right up, the fans started, and there was a large sigh of relief.
I have no idea what it was wrong, but it seems ok now.  Of course, I haven't even connected a monitor or anything, so there's a long way to go, but this was a rather important first step, don't you think?
    Thanks guys

  • MSI N580GTX lightning running at stock specs

    Hi,
I just bought two MSI N580GTX lightning for my sli setup .
One of my card is running at 772mhz ( stock ) speed with standard bios and the other one is at
832mhz ( as it should be ) also with standard bios .
So is there a way to fix the first one to run at 832mhz instead of 772 ? I know how to do it with MSI AB but i want a bios fix.
the two cards differs in respect with their bios , 1st one is 70.10.17 and the 2nd one is 17.10.20 , so i'm guessing something
is wrong with the 70.10.17 bios . So can i extract the bios from the 2nd card and use it in the 1st ?
p.s. if I use the ln2 bios for the 1st card , then it runs at the factory oc settings .
    Thanks

ok close the thread as I found out what the problem was.
They mixed up the bios with ln2 and standard, as the standard was showing CBB FIX ( which should be in ln2 for sub zero ocing ).
    anyways , awesome cards

  • MSI X99 SLI PLUS Memory Issue

    Guys,
When I try to do Quad Channel DDR4, the system will not post. Currently, I have an 8GB Sticks in Slot 1, 3, 5. When I place a stick into slot 7, the system won't post. If I remove one from 3 or 1, it will post. Currently able to use 24GB/32GB. I opened a support case and they told me to re-seat my CPU and check my power supply... not impressed. I see BIOS .162 floating around the forum not sure if that would help.
Also to note, I have moved the DIMMs around to different sockets, I had one that showed up in socket 3 as 4GB, swapped socket 5 and 3, both now show 8GB.

    http://www.msi.com/support/mb/X99S-SLI-PLUS.html#support-mem
Try clear CMOS, if it still have problem...
You can also try to flash to BIOS 1.62 to see if help or not.
Are you able to try on another motherboard, or borrow another DDR4 to test if defect mem-slots?
I have taken the following steps:
    1. Upgrade BIOS to 1.5
    2. Reset BIOS to Default State
    3. Reset CMOS
    4. Moved the DIMMs to different slots, including the one I cannot place in the system since it won't post with a 4th DIMM.
As noted, for some time, I was not able to get more than 20GB to show up in the BIOS, only after re-seating and moving DIMMs around was it finally able to see 3 x 8GB sticks. Are you able to give me the errata for the 162 BIOS as well as the "Fix/Change" list I'm all for giving it a shot, just want to know what I'm getting into.

  • Revamp!!! MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition VC

MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition is a reconstructed N580GTX Lightning but with 3GB DDR5 memory and redesigned Twin FrozrIII cooler (propeller blade fan’s color changes from blue to white if the card gets hot and the fan rotates backwards for 30 seconds each time the computer starts to remove dusts on the fan). The card still has the enhanced voltage controls and power circuitry where the Lightning series stands out. Compared from a regular 580GTX power phase, the EX has 16+1 (12 for the GPU Core, 3 for the memory and 1 for the PLL/VDDC Power).
At the back area of the card, you will find useful switches for unlocking the Memory, GPU, PLL voltages / Over Current Protection Power Unlocker/ PWM Clock Tuner / and LN2 Bios switch for Cold Bug Fix.
Below are more in-depth specs of the Lightning EX:
    • Pre-overclocked GPU Core is running at 832 MHz
    • 3072MB GDDR5 4200MHz Memory
    • Video Output Functions – 2x Dual-Link DVI, 1x HDMI and 1x Display Port
    • Compose of Military Class 2 Components for longer lifespan and better overclocking ability (Solid Capacitors, Super Ferrite Chokes, Hi-C Caps, Lightning Power PCB Layer, Copper MOS and Proadilizer)
    • Capable of Two-Way or 3-Way SLI Configuration
Black colored underneath plate which serves as heatsink for memory and VRM chips. It also acts as support or brace for long video cards so that it won’t slant down once installed.
Accessories included with the VC Package:
•Two SLI Bridges for multi GPU configuration
•2x 6pin Power to 8pin PCIE Power Connector
    •DVI to VGA Connector
    •Software & Utility DVD
    •Manual and Quick Guide
    •V-Check Points Connector
Lightning EX at stock speed for all the tests.  The only component that I overclocked was the 2600K processor to determine bottlenecks. PhysX was also disabled so that equal comparison can be made against an AMD ATI VC model.
    Test System Configuration:
•Processor: 2600K with Fenrir Heatsink Fan
    •Motherboard: Z68A-GD80
    •Memory: Kingston 2x2GB DDR3 2133MHz
    •Harddrive: Kingston SSD VNow+ 128GB
    •PSU: Antec TPQ-1200
    3dmark06 Result: 24777
    Vantage Result: 25614
    3dmark11 Result: 6535
Next with the 2600K overclocked at 5.1GHz. Video Card performance did increased. This shows that you have to run your 2600k at least at 4.5 – 4.8GHz to cope up with the Lightning EX’s Power.
    3dmark06 2nd Result: 35384
    Vantage 2nd Result: 28741
    3dmark11 2nd Result: 6815
N580GTX Lightning is such a powerful card that even at stock settings, power performance is enough to play all latest games in high resolution with extreme detail settings. Then if the power is still enough for you, you could still use the MSI Afterburner Software to juice out more from the video card or configure it in SLI.

It's only unstable when i'm use the GPU (Games & benchs), not HD videos.
Most games/bench crashes with default clock @ 1.031v. I tried to overvolted & undervolted the GPU, but my tests were not conclusive. The only way i've found to have all games/benchs stable is to downclock the GPU as I explained in my first post.
Maybe i need a more accurate GPU voltage ? Is it important to change Memory & Aux voltage too ?
have you tested with 1050mV for core?

  • MSI P7N SLI Platinum and OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition

    Hello,
I have a MSI P7N SLI Platinum nForce 750i SLI motherboard and I would like to inquire if it is fully compatible with OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition memory? Firstly, I do not seem to get the correct timings with the default settings, speed is not very good, after 5 hours of running Memtest86+ there was 30 errors. I have never had the memory crash and games seem to run fine, but the memory feels much slower than it should be. Is the memory supposed to work fine with this motherboard and I'm just imagining everything? I don't know if I'm also supposed to be worried by the errors Memtest86+ returned?
Thank you in advance for any help.

    If memtest returned errors, yes
Well, there does not have to be a problem with the memory just because it returned errors. There could be many other explanations why there are errors.

Jacobl, please post full system specs.  Read the >>Posting Guide<< to get an idea of the details you should provide.
How many modules of what capacity do you have?  What are your current RAM-related BIOS settings?
If you have more than one stick of RAM, please test each stick seperately with memtest86+ and see if the errors are caused by one of the sticks only.  Otherwise there is no way to tell if there is a compatibility problem or just a faulty memory stick.
Please post a link to the OCZ product site and also a screenshot of the CPU-Z "SPD" tab.
    I have this memory: http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_6400_sli_ready_edition_4gb_dual_channel.
This is the rest of the components as instructed by the forum post you linked to:
    Intel E8200
    MSI P7N SLI Platinum
    OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition 4GB Dual Channel
    Gigabyte Geforce 8800GT 512MB PCI
    500GB Western Digital SATA
    SATA DVD burner
    Windows XP SP3
    Antec 500W PSU
I usually troubleshoot components step by step - eliminating all possible reasons until I have found the solution. My first step was to post here to find out if there are any known compatibility issues with the motherboard and memory. I adjusted the memory timings with a slight overclock because the motherboard did not load the default timings by default. I will start by adjusting the BIOS settings, check if the memory is inserted into the right DIMM slots and then test the memory sticks one by one. But to answer my own question: I think the motherboard and memory should have no compatibility issues and it must be something else.
Quote from: Freestate on 07-September-08, 23:06:36
I have the OCZ 6400 Fatal1ty modules 2x2 GB that is very similar of the ones you ask.And they are running perfectly but i must set the epp latency and voltaje values in BIOS! The simple modules of ocz are in the memory compatibilty list i thought that the SLI and Falal1ty modules are just the same with a little boost.
I had to set the right timings also. As far as I know, the SLI and Fatal1ty modules are probably the same, just with a little boost. I think it would be very strange if a module with the name "SLI-Ready Edition" and a Nforce 750i motherboard would not be compatible together.
Anyway, any other advice on what steps I should take? I assume by now that the motherboard and memory should work together without problem. Sorry if I started out bad by not following the posting guidelines on the forum.

  • MSI x99s Sli Plus DPC latency

    Hello,
I'll be building a new workstation soon and am interested in the MSI x99s Sli Plus mainboard.
I've been looking up some reviews on it which seem promising, but there are not many out there right now.

Maybe thats the culprit, unless the latency checker was updated to be used correctly with win8.
It is stated on their site: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml
    Quote
Windows 8 Compatibility: The DPC latency utility runs on Windows 8 but does not show correct values. The output suggests that the Windows 8 kernel performs badly and introduces a constant latency of one millisecond, which is not the case in practice. DPCs in the Windows 8 kernel behave identical to Windows 7. The utility produces incorrect results because the implementation of kernel timers has changed in Windows 8, which causes a side effect with the measuring algorithm used by the utility. Thesycon is working on a new version of the DPC latency utility and will make it available on this site as soon as it is finished.
The results go the other way though, i.e. they show basically 1ms latency.
Unplug all un-needed USB devices and disable all un-needed start up apps before testing.

  • MSI K8N SLI and Athon 64 X2 4200+: some problems

    Hi from France
I've try to upgrade my computer all day long, and still have no solution about this..
    Mainboard: MSI K8N-SLI
    Processor: Athlon 64x2 4200+
    RAM: CORSAIR 1Go *2 PC 3200
Graphic card: MSI X1950 Pro 256 Mo Radeon
2 HD (WD 250 Go and WD 160 Go) on IDE 133 (supplied by the mainboard)
OK, I've connected everything, everythings seems to be well started, the CPU is recognized as ATHLON 64 X2 4200+, and I try to go into BIOS by pressing "DEL", as it is written on my screen (just beside "F11 to boot sequence)
Nothing happened, it seems that it freezes...
When I start the computer, I hear my HD starting, the graphic card also, everything...
    But what's going on ??
I'm a little bit disappointed, it's not the first time I do this kind of upgrade...
I've rebuilt my computer with "old" configuration MSI K7N L Athlon XP 3000+ and MSI 6600 Geforce
    Every thing is ok
I don't understand, can somebody helps me
SOrry for my bad technical english...

And so without that, computer boots well, CPU is seeing good, RAM is OK and all the drives..
Some problems with my OS (XP and SP2), but as somebody says above, I needed to "repair" it, and all is good now
    Thanks for your answer...
    Best regards...
happy new year  nice everything goes well

  • MSI P6N SLI Platinum + E6850 + 533Mhz (PC-4200) RAM?

    Hi,
I got hold of an E6850 (1333 MHz FSB) CPU for upgrade and I would like to know if it can run with 2Gb hynix RAM (533MHz PC-4200) on my MSI P6N SLI platinum (Rev 1.0). If it will run, how much performance loss would there be compared to using 667MHz or 800MHz RAM?
    Thanks.

I am not sure if the Nforce Chipset/Memory Controller is able to support a memory bus speed that is lower than FSB Clock Speed. Intel Chipset usually can't do that (1:1 usually being the minimum ratio supported).  However, on your board, the memory speed is not directly tied to the FSB Clock Speed and can be adjusted independently, so the situation may be different.  The bottom line is:  I can't tell you for sure if it will work or not and therefore suggest to simply test it and see what happens.

With the memory bus running slower than the Front Side Bus, there will be definately be a performance difference that is not insignificant.
