Msi Neo Plat & A64 3000

Hi guys
Well finally after a few months of waiting ive got rid of my stock A64 cooler and had chance to fiidle with some overclocking i really would like some advise on my recent overclcock perhaps some of you guys know where i might be able to tweak my system alittle bit here's the details
System
A64 3000+
MSI Neo Plat
2 X 512mb Crucial Ballistix PC4000
Radeon x800 pro Vivo
Hiper 450w PSU
60gig seagate IDE HDD
80gig seagate SATA HDD
Cooling
Thermalright SLK-978u
Artic Cooling rev4
so far i have reached this
FSB 235 x 10 @ 1.65v mem @ 2.5,3,3,10 @ 1.70v
temps are around 39
3DMark 2001 = 23766
3DMark 2003 = Havent try'd yet :p
So are my mem timings good ive try'd higher FSB but couldn't seem to get it without upping my volts,  im thinking that it might be my memory settings holding me back but not really sure
Cheers for reading

Second double sided dimm in the 7030's seem to really give it headaches.  WILL NOT run @ 1:1 no matter what I do.  Automatically defaults it to 166 divider no matter what slots or bios settings I try.  I managed to get them to run @ 200 by OC'ing to 240fsb but even then I had to use way worse timings than they would do by themselves.  OCZ is the only manufacturer I have found that makes a 1 Gig stick that runs at the same timings as their 512 Mb sticks.  When I get one of those babies I'll really be able to see what this thing will do @ 1:1.  Probaly only get to 220 or so with pc3200 but doing it @ 1:1 with good timings will be sweet!

If you want SSE3 support and you do not overclock, Bios 1.4 is the only one officially available (1.41beta is not official).
Try to upgrade to 1.4 and see it for yourself, do the upgrade with floppy in DOS so that you can save your old Bios.
I would rather wait till mid June when a less troublesome new bios is suppose to be availabe for NEO4 MBs.

  • Just bought SATA2 250GB WD HD for MSI Neo Plat ver 1 (7030).

I just bought a SATA2 250GB Western Digital HD for my MSI Neo Plat ver 1 (7030).
I'm currenlty using the 1.7 BIOS.
I've always used IDE up to this point.
I haven't yet installed my new drive but I'm a little nervous.
Are there any gotchas waiting for me?
What I want to do is copy my partitions from my old IDE HD to my new SATA2 HD.
Something tells me that this is not going to go so smoothly - don't ask me why, it's gut feeling
I predict BSOD when I try to boot from my new HD.
Any advice from people who have done this using the MSI Neo Platinum 1 ?
Can you have both IDE and SATA drives connected at the same time so that I can do a partition copy?
I think that MSI Neo Plat 1 is only rated do SATA1 so I'm not sure how it'll behave with my SATA2 drive
I'm a pessimist by nature, however, my "gut" instints are normally correct

I don´t have the same MoBo as you, so there might be some differences which I´m not aware of, but basically you could install the Sata drive as new bootdrive with OS and keep the old Pata HDD as backup drive.
The Sata installation (not raid) is just like a Pata installation except for other cables and MoBo connectors/IF.
To avoid confusion, disconnect the power from the old HDD and just keep the new Sata drive as the only drive while formatting / installation OS.
You will only benefit native Sata1 performance, but that almost the same as Sata2 so no big deal ( only the theoretically performance is twice as good ).
I don´t think there´s no need to change any backward Sata1-2 jumpers on the WD drive, but if I´m wrong there should be such a jumper that limits the performance to Sata1 - You could check at WD website.
After you´ve reconnected the old HDD - Go into bios ( probably "Advanced" menu ) and set " HDD Boot drive" order ( or called simular ), check and set WD as bootdrive.( don´t mix up HDD boot order with the general Floppy/CD/HDD bootorder).
Now you still have all your files intact on the old HDD and if you want to, you could ofcourse transfer them to the new drive as well.
( You will need to reinstall some programs on the new HDD, that does not work anylonger on the old HDD, but all files are intact)

  • Xp-120 on msi neo plat (754) with arctic rev3 agp cooler

I want to put a thermalright xp-120 on my msi neo plat s754 board. looking at some pics, the heatpipes seem very close to the agp slot.
I have an arctic cooling rev3 cooler on my connect3d 9800pro, and I'm not sure if there is enough clearance between the heatpipe and the bracket on the side of the AGP card.
anyone else got this setup working ?
    thanks

The results you posted there mean totally nothing since you don't state on what grounds you placed them on those places.

    Hi everyone,
Suddenly for 4 days ago my pc wouldn't boot up when I pressed the on button(infront). So I toggled the on&off button on my psu and after a few tries my pc booted up. So in the next few days I did the same thing. Weird I tought, since I haven't done anything with my PC.
And when I would turn off my pc it wouldn't shutdown properly, it just stod there after windows was shutdown, still it would just be running.
So today I had enough and checked inside the pc. I found the Power switch cable was disconnected from JFP1 , no problem, i'll just plugg it back I thought...
Then again I tried both sides and tried booting with the button & on&off on PSU, didn't help.
It only started up(with on&off with psu), all fans were running and light from gfx card, but it didn't get any signals from monitor nor would cd-rom eject. So it was on, but not booting up to windows or bios...
Also looking at my manual I noticed I'm missing the POWER LED cable in JFP1. I've searched high and low, only found 3-pin POWER LED in JFP2.
Where is this missing Power led with 2 pins ? Is this cable important?
    Is my psu dieing?
Can anyone help this gal in desperate need of help?

MIST PSUs is manufactured specially by a reputated PSU manufacturer to a dedicated entusiast shop in norway aimed to silent computing among other things .
MIST as a brand is dedicated to silence .
They have also come out with CPU-coolers , watercooling , case fans , etc in the MIST line .
Theese PSUs are well known by overclockers and people wanting sileced products and is top of the line .
The previous MIST psus were based on FSP/CWT PSUs and MIST where modified silenced models and thourougly tested exclusively for microplex.
With their new one there have been some secrecy from them about who they have been working with to manufature the current sample .
The shop has now had a deeper role in setting demands of the products and specs and component choice of the psu to be produced together with the manufacurer.
It's said that the latest one has been under development over almost one year , and microplex has rejected several
samples before they got it like they intended .
(i have a hunch that it's the danish chill-innovation they have worked toghether with)
This new one is a atx 2.01 based one with two indipendent +12v rails each at 18A , -36A of +12v , and it's efficiancy is very high over the whole specter.
    Max. @ +3.3V and +5V together is 275W.
    Max. @ +12V1 and +12V2 together is 380W.
Max. @ all outputs together is 500W .

  • Best BIOS setting for MSI K8N Plat + AMD 3000+ Venice + Geil Value RAM

    Hi all,
Which BIOS settings would you recommend for this combination:
    MSI K8N Plat
    3000+ Venice core
    2 x 512 MB GEIL value RAM
I have NorthQ Giant UFO cooler attached to CPU. I would like to have as fast system as possible but remain on the safe side - a 100% stable system.... I know default would be safe enough but wouldn't use the potential of the CPU, I gues....

  • Antec Sonata 380W PS enough for MSI Neo and A64???

I'm looking at picking up the MSI board and an A64 3000 for my Antec Sonata case.
My question is that I see a lot of problems not posting as the PS is not enough.
Does anyone know whether or not the Antec 380W PS will be enough?  I will be using 2HDD, a DVD writer, a CD rom drive, and an ATI 9800 pro.
The specs on the PS are:
    +5V  35A
    -5V  .5A
    +12V  18A
    -12V  1A
    +3.3V  28A
    max output 360 watts
    TIA

  • New BIOS (v2.1) for MSI Neo Plat 7030

I noticed that there are some fairly new BIOS versions available for the MSI Neo Platinum v1.0 (7030).
I'm currently on BIOS version v1.7 and that's been stable.
Has anyone tried version v2.1 ?
I've heard bad things about v1.8 so  I'm not messing with that.

    it is for me
i only updated BIOS when i was trying out some overclocking, and it gave me some better results, than when i was with BIOS 1.4, which i had used for a year previously with no issues
if you don't need to update BIOS, then you don't need to update BIOS; its not like updating a driver
    BIOS flashing stupid or not??

  • [AMD] Highest clock speed with K8N Neo Plat + A64 3200+ Newcastle?

Who owns the exact setup (ram+cpu+mobo) as me and what is the clock speed you all achieved? Mine can only go till 220x11, Ram at 220mhz,
    (2.4ghz, DDR440)?

The place I bought my parts from were selling similar ready-built systems with K8N and Geil Value Ram (not Golden) so I thought it would have been fine also (same Antec case and PSU)...
300W and 10A is pretty low for a PSU (mine's only 350W and 16A though) - but your problem sounds very much like my original problem (although worse).
Take a look at Ram that does not work well with MSI K8N:
    Quote
angusmcchris: Kingston Value RAM doesn't work so hot. Would have saved me a weekend's worth of horror if I had found this thread earlier.  I had to lower the RAM speed down to 166MHz to get it to work, and now its time to go to bed.

eLeCTR0n: I have a Kingston DDR 400 MHz 512MB card (not the HyperX). I couldnt do anything first when i had it installed in slot 1 running at Max Mem Clock of 200. I couldnt install any OS. i got the blue screen million times and many different ones. Even linux failed to install until i slowed it down to 166 in the BIOS then everything worked fine. Then i wanted to see if i had a defective motherboard or ram card so i bought a PNY DDR 400 512MB ram stik pulged in at 200 and it worked perfectly.
Also look at Ram that works well with MSI K8N for good, compatible RAM...
I can't recommend Crucial Ballistix enough: 2-2-2-8 timings @ 1T on AUTO settings. Never had a single glitch with hours and hours of Doom3, Half Life2, etc...

  • Low CPU mark score with a64 3000+

I get around 650 to 680 cpu mark score with my system:
    MSI Neo Plat
    1Gig of PC3200 KINGSTON Ram
    A64 3000+ @ 2ghz
    Leadtek 6800
I've updated the latest nforce drivers from MSI and the bios is 1.2
I think it's way to low since I had 300 cpu mark score with my lousy Athlon 1.4Ghz thunderbird.
I see that other a64 3000+ users get around 800 to 950 cpu mark score. Why is mine too low? Bios settings? What should I check?
I see even a MSI Kt800 user with 840 cpu score!

Could you please post a link for the software benchmark that you are referring to?  I can't seem to find the right one.  I got something called CPUMark but it is scoring mine at like 3400 which isn't in the correct range based on what you've said so it's probably a different software.  Thanks for your help.  I just want to see where mine falls out.

  • Built my Neo Plat at last

Put it together yesterday. Just a few issues. I'll update my sig a soon as I have time. In the meantime: K8N Neo Plat, A64 3400+ Clawhammer, MSI FX5700-TD128, 1GB (2*512) HyperX PC3500 CL2.5, Enermax 433W (465 model no.) PSU with squillions of amps on all rails, 2*74GB Raptors RAID0 on SATA3&4, 80GB Maxtor SATA, Plextor DVD+RW 712A, Logitech diNovo Media Desktop (awesome).
Flashed to BIOS 1.4 with a ramdrive no problem at all. No need even to clear CMOS. Slipstreamed WinXP SP2 & used to set up Win32 partition on the raid - partitions created for Win x64 & Linux to load later.
    Problems I had/have:
    1. Had a brain fart with the heatsink retention mechanism. I never installed an A64-type before. I couldn't get the second side on - strained so much I thought I'd crack the board. After I bled over the heatsink (seriously!) I read the AMD heatsink REMOVAL instructions and that's where I found that the lever rotates
Any newbs out there - turn the lever up!
    2. Occasionally hangs on boot up with "Detecting IDE drives...". What with all the restarts after driver, etc installs this was pretty irritating. Each time it happened it booted no problem after a 3-fingered salute. I've searched this forum and am happy to see I'm not alone but unhappy to see that nobody seems to have a clue what's going on.
Apart from that boot up is blindingly fast.
    3. USB ports on the D-Led bracket not working. Searched the forum and found the answer
Solution: take out pin 10 from the front USB connector.
    4. Cell Menu > DRAM Timing - where is the 1T/2T switch? It's in the manual but not in my BIOS!
    5. Is it normal that if IEEE1394 is enabled in the BIOS then Win XP creates a Firewire high-speed LAN connection by itself during the install even when I haven't got anything connected and I'm not even on a network?
Oh BTW why did I read someone here suggesting it's better to create partitions with Partition Magic after installing Win XP? That has to be nonsense. I have partitioned drives ad nauseam during the install & it's always the simplest & safest way. An extra bonus if there's no need to shell out on the software.

Thanks for the reply, but I guess you misunderstood me.
    - the "detecting drives" can't be Windows related because it happens before the drives are detected
    - my own search on this forum showed that it has been around since long before BIOS 1.4
Once the BIOS has got past the IDE detection, the OS boot is blindingly fast. The whole process up to the login screen is about 5 seconds. On the times when the BIOS doesn't get stuck detecting drives, the whole process from start to login screen is maybe 7 or 8 seconds (for a warm reboot). I'm very impressed with that.
This certainly looks like some kind of BIOS issue. I hope MSI are looking into it because we've had more than the minimum 5 reports on this which I gather are necessary for a mod to refer it to them.
    Thanks again anyway.
    Hi Steeve
I'm encountering the same problem on my K8N Neo 2 Platinum (S939) : On cold boot, my cd writer ASUS CRW 2410A master on IDE 2 (no slave) keeps repeating continuously its initialization procedure (you know : The light lit up and  the drive make that caracteristcal noise). If I shut down my system and start it again immediately, everything goes well.
It's certainly BIOS related and I hope that MSI will do something here.
I was thinking : Maybe we could try to disable "Quick Boot" in BIOS. This will initiate a complete memory test before IDE initialization. Maybe that it could give more time to IDE peripherals to start properly ?

can some one give me there settings in bios so i can try them out, i want to try something moddest, im aiming for 2.2ghz maybe 2.4,
I really want to learn how to overclock but reading these guides are really confusing me, there seems to be a formula or ratio to how you overclock,
but im not getting it, its like a math formula isnt it? its freezing up my brain
can some one break down how the ratio or formula is done in order to get the desired overclock?
i understand that all setups will vary even if they are similar and my results will derive from my particular hardware.
i also understand the best way to know what your particular setup can handle is by testing the different settings at a time using programs such as cpuz, memtest and prime95..
any one mind helping me out? i chose this cpu for the sole purpose of overclocking it even though iv never even read about how to do it      anyway thanks in advance.

The A64 boards only allow a few ratios, but lowering the memory speed to have tighter timings usually yields beter overall performance....
Value RAM usually has problems at the HTT's these A64 boards and CPU's can run at, but the "better" memory on the "right" board, can do cas2.5 at 300HTT....!
The typical ratios the 64 Bit BIOS allow are:
200 = 1:1 ratio with HTT and memory clock, so when HTT is 250 the memory clock will be 250
166 = 5:6 ratio, so when HTT is 250 the memory will be 208
133 = 2:3 ratio, so when HTT is 250 the memory will be 166
100 = 1:2 ratio, so when HTT is 250 the memory will be 125
    Auto = I'm 80% sure that Auto = 1:1 ratio too
Some boards express these ratios in percent...

  • Success with K8N Neo Plat + ATI 9800Pro?

I'm trying to decide on whether to go with the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB or the GeForce 6800nu. But I've read a lot of places where people have had problems combining the MSI K8N Neo Platinum and the Radeon 9800 Pro cards together... lots of blue screening or choppiness when playing games like FarCry or other heavy hitters. So that's why I'm considering the GeForce card instead, but I'd really like to stick with the ATI if possible.
So, if you have a combination of that mobo and gfx card, please post the results of your success or problems (and why) along with your system specs.
    Thanks in advance!

Since my power upgrade to a Tagan 480W, I haven't had any problems anymore! With the new ATi catalyst 4.9 drivers I reached 6005 3DMarks (2003 build 340) yesterday. Without any OC-ing, I think that's great! Before the Tagan psu I had some drops to 3700 3dmarks, so make sure you get a psu with at least 24amps or more on the +12V rail for this kind of system!
No choppiness in games either, in fact they (Farcry, Colin Mcrae, CoD, Doom3 since 4.9 drvs etc etc) all look great!
I can really recommend the ATi9800Pro 128 MB + MSI Neo plat. + a AMD64 CPU as lons as you buy a decent psu with it! I mean the ATi9800 Pro has a great price / performance these days

Try raising RAM voltage to 2.7v - 2.8v.
    If no go - Run Memtest86 http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
If no go -  Try onboard Audio ( disable / remove Audigy2 )
