MSI Neo2 K8N Platinum - Freezing Issue during games

First off greetings to everyone on these forums...
I purchased the MSI Neo2 K8N Platinum motherboard from NewEgg back at the end of March to compliment the AMD 64 "Winchester" processor that I also purchased at that time to replace a slightly older AMD XP "Barton" system that was using the Abit NF7-S motherboard. For the past month I have been fighting an unusual and highly irritating issue that I have noticed during game play and have tried everything that I know of and more in an attempt to remedy this issue, but to no avail. This is the general background of the situation and now I will descibe in greater detail as to what this issue I am referring to is and the symptoms of this issue and some of the various methods used to remedy this issue.
The issue is that while play a game the system experiences a short 5-10 second freeze during the game randomly, but usually several times an hour. During this freezing the sound would loop and as suddenly as the freeze occurs it would cease and the game would continue on as if nothing happened. However, sometimes this would result in the system freezing outright after this short 5-10 second freeze... but it does not feel like a total system freeze, but rather a video freeze as the sound continues and I still have keyboard control... but this does require me to force a manual reboot of the machine itself. I have scowered the internet and various forums in an attempt to find what the issue was and use various methods to remedy this issue, but so far nothing has worked in my favor... but it does seem like this issue has been plaguing other users with the MSI Neo2 Platinum motherboard. Below are some of the methods that I have used in an attempt to solve this issue:
*Default Clock for CPU/Memory/GPU; Over/Under Clock for CPU/Memory/GPU
*Increased voltages to CPU VID, AGP, and Memory
*Disabled/Enabled AGP Fast Writes
*Increased AGP Aperture from 64MB to 512MB
*Enabled/Disabled ATI/nVidia Speedup option in BIOS
*Forced AGP clock lock to 66-67mhz
*Relaxed/Aggressive memory timings
*APIC enabled/disabled
*Gate A20 turbo/normal
*Disabled all unneeded onboard components (Realtek NIC, Sound, SATA)
*Disabled nVidia MAC and attempted to use 3Com Gigabit PCI card instead
*Swapped HDD Cables
*Tried PCI Sound Card (SB Audigy2 ZS Gamer) in PCI Slots 3/4
*Tried video drivers from 71.89 Official to 76.45 beta modified drivers
*Tried 5.10 official nForce drivers to remixed 7.02 nForce drivers (5.10 drivers uses 4.36 GART, higher drivers uses the 4.40 GART)
*Applied all the latest updates from Windows Update Website
*Reinstalled Operating System (Windows XP SP2) 5 different times clean with various settings (APIC on/off, etc...) and different drivers.
*Installed Audio Card (SB Audigy2 ZS Gamer) with older and the latest drivers available from Creative's website
*Replaced PSU (Previously was a Thermaltake 420watt PSU, 18A +12v) with a OCZ Modstream 520watt PSU (28A +12v)
*Video card is KNOWN working from previous build (AMD XP 3000, Abit NF7-S)
*Hard Drive is KNOWN working from previous build
*CD/DVD-ROM drive is kNOWN working from previous build
*Heat is not an issue... all components temperature is well below rated level, the only unknown is the chipset temperature (it has a active heatsink and seems to not be hot to the touch, applied AS5 to it anyway)
*Used latency tweak to the video card
*Used Rivatuner to force constant performance level
*Tweaked BIOS to force even clock rates and forced 1.4v to the GPU Core
*Used original GPU BIOS
*Used MSI Neo2 K8N Bios 1.4 - 1.8 and modified BIOS 1.8
*No background applications are running (not even antivirus)
*Used application to force maximum refresh rates for my monitor
*Memory passed MemTest86+ for over 24 hours
*System passed Prime95 and SuperPi for over 24 hours
*System seems stable in all non gaming related applications
*Checked through various troubleshooting procedures
*Disabled SBDRVDET.EXE using MSCONFIG
*There are no IRQ conflicts outside of PCI system management sharing IRQ11 with the NIC and USB... in APIC there are no IRQ conflicts what so ever. Regardless neither method worked
*Installed AMD 64 drivers from AMD
*Disabled DEP in boot.ini
*...and many other various tweaks and modifications.

I have been fighting this issue for well over a month now and I am frankly nearly out of ideas, this does not necessarly prevent me from playing games, but this does interfere with the games I do play (especially online games). I do demand absolute stability from the games that I play and this issue only began AFTER I upgraded to the new motherboard, processor, and memory. The only thing I have not tried is something that I do not have access in attempting on this motherboard, and that is increasing the voltage to the chipset.
Here is my theory on what is going on is that I believe is there is a fault with the chipset on this motherboard and this is manifesting itself while I am playing various games on this system. Of course I would like to try increasing the voltage to the chipset as that would increase stability, but there is no option in BIOS to increase the chipset voltage like the previous motherboard I had (Abit NF7-S). It is possible that either a) the chipset is at fault and is causing me this issue or b) the chipset is not recieving enough voltage.
My question to the rest of you is this, what do you think the problem is and what ideas do you have that I may try that I have not tried yet. Additionally if there is nothing else that I may try should I attempt to RMA this motherboard and will that help, and is there any other versions of this motherboard that I should be aware of. I would appreciate any response from a MSI representative and any comments from those that may have positive suggestions for my issue. Thank you in advance for your time and any help that you may be able to render.

*EDIT* Added additional methods attempted... (there was a lot... so I did not remember everything that I have tried)

Does it only happen in online games, or can it happen in all games? One thing to make sure of is to turn off CRC checksum offload in your NVidia MAC properties (everyone do this, it is incorrectly calculating checksums which leads to servers ignoring your packets). However as you have tried a different network card you can discount this theory.
For me it looks like the biggest culrpit is your 6800NU, i have read alot of bad things about the NU and you have a low bios revision there, just because it worked well against your old chipset doesnt mean it will work well against your current chipset. Sounds like a BIOS fix is needed as some timing is out somewhere.
Ensure Spread Spectrum is off (and as you have already pointed out Fast writes, ATI NV Speedup) and your card is running at default clock.
As a test beg/borrow/steal another graphics card (preferably nvidia) and see how it goes so you can narrow in on your video card.
It is not just one game, but it is more prodominate in certain games than others... the game in question here is Planetside... though I stuck a demo of Unreal Tournament 2004 on a loop bot match and it seemed to have locked up after 4 hours (not sure how many times it experienced that 5-10 freeze as I went to bed). As for the video card it was KNOWN working from a previous build in those same games (Previous build was a AMDXP3000 and a Abit NF7-S nForce2 motherboard). The only components different in this build is the AMD64, the MSI Neo2 K8N, 2 new sticks of Corsair XMS to replace the Corsair ValueSelects, and the SB Audigy2 as I would never use a software codec audio solution. Spread Spectrum is LOCKED in BIOS and disabled... ATI/nVidia speed up was disabled from the start... and I tried the Video Card at default clock, over clocked, as well as under clocked and the same issue resulted... as I said before it is NOT the video card.
There are two other things I could try is use my old Geforce4ti 4200 and see what happens... or even try out WindowsXP 64-bit edition as someone earlier suggested. I wish I could find a new BIOS for my XFX 6800NU, but there there is only the revision 1 BIOS that I was able to find. The mystery continues...

  • MSI K9AGM4-L - Strange freezing issue with games

I built this low budget computer for my friend, and it has a strange bug. The parts are:
    MSI K9AGM4-L motherboard
    X2 64 4600+ AM2 processor + stock cooler
    2 x 1gb Kingston 667 DDR2
    PNY 7600GT PCI-E
Antec Solo Quiet case + 12cm fan
    HEC 350W power
Tested with WinXP SP2 and Vista 64Bit
Bug: Everything works ok, but everytime I start a game (IL-2 1946 for example) it freezes continuosly.
OK, I thought it was a temp issue, but...
    - I've played IL-2 1946 for over 200 hours with that card, when it was on my own computer and it never had any issues. I have the exact same Antec case on my own computer, with one 12cm fan.
    - That power doesn't feel hot at all after it has been on for over an hour or so.
    - Processor temp never exceeds 47-49C when playing, so can't be it either.
    - SATA harddrive temp is 47C according to "Everest".
The only thing that seems hot to touch is the NB heatsink (which is very small on this mobo, btw). So I made this test: I used an open case and put this huge 40cm fan next to it and played the game. It still started to freeze even though the heatsink wasn't very hot.
I also thought it's something with the drivers/software, so I tested everything with Vista 64bit + different drivers/software, didn't help. Also I tested one ATI card, same symptoms.
I also checked that the NB heatsink is properly seated.
SO.... any ideas what can cause this? Is it the NB afterall, that needs a better heatsink...or?
Any help to solve this will be welcomed, thanks in advance.

"But I've ran a P4 2.8 computer with that PSU for over a year without any issues at all."
That doesn't prove anything. Don't trust to cheap PSU's.
Also for your current build its too weak:
    HEC-350LD-T. AC Input: 115/230V~, 50~60Hz, 8/5A, Fuse Rating: T8AL, 250V~.
    DC Output: +3.3V~20A, +5V~33, +12V~15A. +5Vsb~2A, -5V~1A, -12V~1A. MAX OUTPUT POWER: 350W. +5V&3.3V Combined 180W.
Get a single rail PSU with high amperes on +12V +30A or above.

"with that PSU for over a year"
One more reason to be suspicion.

    bejon2000,
    Good point bejon,
I re-read the article and this what it says: " ....If you remember, older Athlon 64 processors based on 130nm cores didn’t support 4 double-sided DDR400 SDRAM modules working at 400MHz frequency at all and reduced their frequency to 333MHz automatically. The today’s processors based on 90nm cores offer us a few better solutions. The D core revision also known as Winchester allows using four double-sided DDR400 memory DIMMs if the Command Rate timing is set to 2T."
From what you posted the Winnie D core CPU may need a little TLC and voltage boost. but it should run 4 X double sided 512 sticks at DDR 400 and 2T. Venice or later core may not need such TLC or voltage boost but still need manual  selections in BIOS Cell menu.
    Thanks for pointing this out,

It's still a Neo 4 board, notice the diamond version doesn't say Neo 4 either.
Thats incorrect, the "K8N Platinum SLI" and the "K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI" are different by the missing silicone image SATA controller and single vs duel gigabit nic's...
K8N Platinum SLI = 4 SATA ports and single Gb Nic  (this is the low cost SLI option)
K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI is sold in America and is identical to the Diamond (has the silicone image SATA controller) for 6 SATA ports and Dual Gb Nic's but don't expect the Duel Net Card with bluetooth and wireless.
K8N Neo4 Platinum is the plain old nforce4 ultra offering.
Check the differences on msicomputer.com vs msi.com.tw and it will become clearer, its taken me 2 months to get my head around it all.

  • *News* What do I mean by custom EasyBIOS , Neo2 K8N Platinum 1C3

    Update : 2006-04-16
Some menu pics were gone missing
I had a philosify when making a custom bios for myself (and others) for the K8N Neo2 that MSI has done right in the way
that they set options as hidden .
That's a great idea , however some default settings on theese on cmos reset (not optimized defaults) are not good.
To have that remedied in custom bioses made I have gone over all the default settings all over and set proper defaults .
This is when i though about having a EasyBIOS of Custom rev.2 based on the latest 1C3 .
With many of those settings set properly on both cmos-reset/Optimized why not hide them away , so thet the setup
menus are cleaner and showing only the options we really need in a day to day world of OC'ing and adding removing hw and such things.
The current Custom rev.2 has to versions :
One fully open one with access to all settings/items that are working .
And one scaled down version with the things that are set once to a proper value and shall remain "as is" is removed .
However some have given signals that they want this and that accessible anyway , and who am I to descide
if users are to use DOT , CnQ , Boot to OS/2 , run without ACPI and so on .
That's why I reconsidered my approach how to make a real EasyBIOS that works for all of us .
And reworked menus which is logical buildt on the items we access most is the ones that should be easy to navigate to
without having to arrow us through menus and submenus to get to them .
In addition to this I wanted to make each menu clean with the important stuff on the first page , and the set and forget stuff
hidden away in a submenu .
So this has resulted in a EasyBIOS3 version based on the K8N Neo2 w7025nms.1C3 .
    Link :
    EASYBIOS3-7025-1C3.ZIP
Here are pics taken by BIOSView.exe of the menu's .
    MAIN SETUP SCREEN
    *Updated pic *
Cell menu is the most accessed item and is placed first , next is h/w monitoring .
The order for the rest is as in award original .
    CELL MENU
    *Updated pic *
In this one some items are renamed to what i feel identifies it better .
And CPU fsb is placed first followed by the multipliers , as theese are the often accesed ones when overclocking.
Items thet are not often changes are placed in the "hidden" Other Settings menu .
    *Updated pic*
    CELL MENU/--DRAM Settings
This one has taken over the dram drive strenght setting .
Memory Clock/Divider is placed first as this one is often changed .
The CAS-RCD-TRAS-TRP has been logically set in order to show the timings as we all refer to them with the 1T/2T in the end .
So we now put the data in in the logical order e.g 2.5-3-3-7-1T .
    *Updated Pic*
    CELL MENU/--Other Settings
Here you find all the items that is not longer on the main page .
I have tried to prioritize , so that most used items are on main page and seldom changed items are in the Other Settings Menu  .
This approach goes through the whole layout structure for all menu's/submenus .
    H/W MONITOR
    *Updated pic *
Entering this one earlier made you enter a new submenu for hw-stats on temps/voltages .
Now this are shown directly in the main page , and other settings are moved to the "Other Settings" submenu.
    *Updated pic *
    H/W MONITOR/--Other Settings
STANDARD CMOS FEATURES (unchanged inside , no picture )
    ADVANCED BIOS FEATURES
    *Updated Pic*
Boot Sequence menu placed first , as I assume this is the one most accessed .
    *Updated Pic*
    ADVANCED BIOS FEATURES/--Boot Sequence
HD boot order moved to be the first item .
    ADVANCED BIOS FEATURES/--Other Settings
    *udated pic*
Rest of the settings not needed on a day to day basis placed here .
    INTEGRATED PHERIPERALS
    *udated pic*
Raid Config placed first followed by IDE devices config.
Menu cleanup and less changed items moved to submenu "Other Settings"
    INTEGRATED PHERIPERALS/--RAID
    *udated pic*
    INTEGRATED PHERIPERALS/--IDE
    *udated pic*
Menu cleanup and less changed items moved to submenu "Other Settings"
PIO and DMA mode are all set to auto on default .
    INTEGRATED PHERIPERALS/--IO DEVICES
    *udated pic*
This menu is like before , except default settings are changed to Com1/LPT disabled to avoid eating up resources .
Com2 is not shown , but set to disabled to avoid eating up resources . MSI has com2 reserving IRQ and I/O even if not visible .
    INTEGRATED PHERIPERALS/--Other Settings
    *udated pic*
Rest of the settings not needed on a day to day basis placed here .
    ADVANCED CHIPSET FEATURES (AGP Settings)
    *udated pic*
Pretty much unchanged , except for SBA showing .
    No "Other Settings" submenu .
    POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP
    *udated pic*
Rearranged main page and item order.
Menu cleanup and less changed items moved to submenu "Other Settings"
    POWER MANAGEMENT SETUP/--Other Settings
    *udated pic*
Rest of the settings not needed on a day to day basis placed here .
    PNP/PCI CONFIGURATIONS
    *udated pic*
Pretty much unchanged , except for Reset ESCD data originally hidden by MSI is hidden again.
This is because K8N Neo2 doesn't support this feature so it's pretty useless to have it visible .
Hope this shed some light on what my definition of EasyBIOS is and how to get there .
After some more tests i will release it the "normal" way as EasyBIOS [r.2] for ms-7025 through Bios Collection Thread .

    I am working on a EasyBIOS for Neo4 Platinum MS-7125 , based on the W7125NMS.190 version .
Changes will be reworked layout , gone trough the default values and added 150Mhz & 183Mhz divider (216/233/250Mhz removed)
I can't try it myself though cause i have no Neo4 board .
So for it's to be released someone has to dear trying it ...

  • I tried MSI. K9A2 Platinum Support issues.

Do not buy MSI.... Buyer beware.
I have the MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard. Now the board runs fine. However I find it very hard to take this company seriously anymore.
6 months ago I tried Flashing the Bios for a CPU upgrade I wanted. MSI's website boasts its mother boards that have 64 bit capabilities. However if you use a 64bit OS. Namely Windows XP or Windows Vista. You are in big trouble. The Live updater doesn't work with it. Not at all. Install it and it gives you errors that it will not launch.
Now any one that has flashed a bios before will say. "Okay I will do it manually." (Or if you don't know what your doing don't touch the Bios) So you download the Image file you need. Launch your boot disk from the A: Drive and well you can't access the Image file you have placed on your C: drive because hey it doesn't recognize Sata. So pray you have an old IDE laying around or you will have to load it to a cd.  Oh but, hey again you have sata still doesn't see it. So usually you load it onto the disk. No big deal right? Well now on their readme it warns against Flashing from a floppy or CD (If you don't understand what I meant I am saying they warn against having the flash file on the boot disk Floppy or CD). So because of this I called MSI and had them walk me through the process because I wanted to be sure I am doing this right. I have done it many times before but for some reason it's a fricking process now. So we made a CD booted and ran it like you would off the A: drive everything went smoothly and then it froze. at 60% into the flash it froze so the guy tells me just reboot. I warn him that if I reboot the Motherboard is junk. He insists it should be fine. I reboot and as expected nothing happens because it was a bad flash.
So they say just send it back they give me an RMA number I remove the board package it and take pictures of its condition. I say again I took pictures. (The reason I did this is if you look at the reviews of this board on Tiger Direct there is complaints of them getting the board and claiming it is damaged. They email you a picture and claim it something you did. they then send it back to you.)
So I send it out. Wouldn't you guess they say it's Damaged they send me some nice pics in an email. So I send my pics of the board in the condition I sent it. There is no damage on the board they can see. They now claim it's the shippers fault. Shipper insists package arrived in great condition. MSI still refuses to help even though they know I sent them the board in great condition. So MSI is very poor in taking care of it's customers through RMA
So I send it back to Cyberpower. I explain to them what happened and they replaced the board free of charge and flashed it to current specs at the time. Bios Version 1.4. Now I work with computers. Part of my work is seeing the ease of how user friendly things are like Bios updates. How new processors perform. So now I was stuck in a dilemma 6 months after the first Now I need Bios version 1.6 installed. Well this time I took it to geek squad. They said it shouldn't take long and I waited in the store 3 hours and watched this person pull their hair out. All the normal ways of flashing the Bios don't work yet again. He goes to use the Live Updater and again 64 bit systems not supported. So he is baffled because why would a company that supports a 64 bit Processor not support the OS. Good question. Now I see more of the geek squad coming over all them ask it's not MSI is it. They get their answer and sigh. Now what they thought was a 15 minute procedure turns into me having to leave the system for a night.
The next day It is completed. What did they have to do? They installed a IDE drive booted from a floppy and loaded off the drive with the Flash file. Having to take the PC apart taking out Cd roms and running the ide via my CD rom IDE. Now I know a lot of you are going to say they didn't know what they where doing and I am telling you They did everything I did which is what MSI walked me through and hit the same road blocks. during the Reboot one of the guys wanted to try MSI live updater 3 and some how it worked..
So I called MSI today and asked them if they now support 64 bit OS with their instant updater. The answer was no. They stated they still do not support that. I checked my  Bios version and some how it did worked. Who knows maybe they did it when they had all the other stuff out and apart and I just didn't notice. But MSI is Claiming the contrary. So I am happy that I have the update. However knowing that I am going to need to update again I now have come to the conclusion that MSI is not a user friendly board in fact it took 4 people at geek squad some of whom I know and see do flashes all the time and they had trouble. I do flashes all the time and I have trouble.
The bottom line here is MSI needs to hop on board with what they offer. Everyone is going to the 64 bit OS mainly because of RAM. They want to run Crysis, Farcry 2, Mass effect, and have the fastest processors available. They want the best video cards Available. But if your manufacturer Builds 64 bit based motherboards that are suppose to support the AM2 Platform then you would think that they would at least have an updater capapable of working with those systems. Now it's not impossible to make something like this work, Nor is it hard. There are other manufacturers who do have easier ways to flash than MSI.
Playstation 3 does firmware update all the time over the net. What is a firmware update? to put it simply it is a Bios flash to update how the machine works with newer software or to take advantage of existing technoligy in the PS3. Which is put simply just a computer. If a company that makes these systems can't even get a live updater to work or does not have the ability to walk you over how to do the flash the flash over the phone correctly why waste your time and money with a lazy company. I have an Asus machine that flashes.
Take this however you want. It could be taken as venting or a warning. Hopefully the MSI forum admin will forward these concerns to MSI before he bans me.

I am not here to argue but, the fact that you as an administrator can sit here and say there is no money in 64 bit obviously are speaking from a point of view of Bias.
Walk into any Bestbuy, call any Dell call center,  Call CyberpowerPC.com, or call Microsoft. These are the systems that are in demand.
Best buy states that there 64 Bit OS based computers are flying off the shelves. and that 90 percent of the computers they now carry are 64 bit installed with Vista.  In approxomatly 11 months windows will only be making Vista and the New windows 7 in 64 bit. It doesn't matter what you think it does. It matters what the market is demanding. There is tons of money in this and if MSI doesn't get on board soon they are gonna lose to competitors that do.
Where would we be if we stuck with 8 bit? What would have happended to the gaming industry if Sega never came out with their 16 bit platform?
Mention MSI to any geek squad guy and they just laugh and say go Asus. Sure you may not value their opinion. But the public who take it to them cause they don't understand computers does. They even say They(Geek squad) are easier to maintain with processor updates with some one who has experience that means something too. Sure I know to use the Utilities now because of these forums which I am thankful for. However: I represent those who are not capable and computer literate and the idea here that we should let them fend for themselves is preposterous.
Plus the fact that you don't use 32 bit software does not speak for those of us that do. There is 64 bit software out there. If your going to sit here and represent MSI. First you need some suggestions and you don't have to take em.
First off answer questions with out the criticism to the 64 bit OS. Just try and help the people regardless of your opinion.
Secondly you need to lose this idea that there is no market for 64bit software. There is. Trust me I report to people who want to see what is in demand. 64 bit is in great demand (Mainly because of ram and yes people don't realize that there really never going to use it. However; The market is pushing this so when it does come out and they do start using it there won't be a mad rush to update everything again.)
Last... Maybe you should get on this company as well. This may be a user forum but, to be honest I am here criticizing them as on many other sites so they can hopefully get word that there are many people aside from me who are complaining about there support and they can improve it. MSI has some great innovations but they need to make sure they support all the new hardware and software that goes along with being in this type of business. Criticism helps drive us as Human, as companies to do better.
However I do value you and your opinion and will even be submitting a report of this forum and how helpful it is to those who are not so good with the computer or just starting out doing it on their own. You can lock this if ya like. Please don't take offense either as I think you have some knowledge that is really worth sharing to many others. I have seen some of your other posts after your replies and you definitely have some great input. Thanks for letting me debate with you.

    bejon2000,
    Good point bejon,
I re-read the article and this what it says: " ....If you remember, older Athlon 64 processors based on 130nm cores didn’t support 4 double-sided DDR400 SDRAM modules working at 400MHz frequency at all and reduced their frequency to 333MHz automatically.

  • MSI Neo k8n Platinum firewall

    1: I can't access it.
Thats how simple it is, I click the "NVIDIA Web-based Interface" shortcut and nothing happens. NOTHING, It's so great that MSI checks so that everything works before they release a MB, go go MSI.
I'll never buy anything from them again.

I've had limited issues with it until however I used live update to update my drivers from the ones provided on the instalation cd to the latest stored on MSI's site, now it's selective to what it allows through. So far I've had most trouble with banking websites that use certain popup windows.
If you want to check if you are being blocked try the below link, I was applying for a credit card and got to a point when the site  wants to open a form. If you are having the same issue the form won't open and an error will appear instead.
If i shutdown the firewall however the form will open
From what i can gather after googling we are not alone, the only solution so far is to disable it as even on low settings it still blocks these pages.
    http://www.abbey.com/cash/credit_cards/credit_cards_balance_transfer_card_apply.html
click that link and press the orange CONTINUE button, it will try and open the form
If someone is going to try and fix it then this page is one example of what's being blocked.

  • Graphic Issues during games

    Greetings,
I have a question I'm hoping someone can answer for me. I've been having issues lately playing games. When I start playing, my fps is about 40-50, but after about 30 mins, my fps drop down to around 5-10, and then after about 5 mins, it jumps back up to 40-50. Any idea what this might be? Thanks!
    This question was solved.

Try the NVIDIA driver update from the NVIDIA web site.  Check your BIOS level against the latest level posted.
If the above doesn't solve your problems then I would suggest that you install a video card.  The EVGA NVIDIA 240 GT 1 GB DDR5 will work with your 300 watt power supply.

My whole system is running damned stable, except for not POSTing on a cold boot sometimes - I haven't worked out why this is just yet but I'm guessing it's something to do with MSI's badly engineered BIOSes. It seemed to have a lot of trouble cold POSTing on 300HTT so hence it being at 302 (I just put it up from 301 as it didn't POST properly this morn).
Anyway, feel free to ask any questions - I've bookmarked this thread and will definately check back.

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] DDR Memory with 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum

SYSTEM SPEC: 400w PSU, Pentium 4 3.2ghz 800mhz FSB (HT), Matrox Parhelia 128 8x AGP card, MSI Neo2 PFS Platinum motherboard.
Hi there. Im looking for some serious help with my computer. I have a MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum mobo and have been using 512mb DDR RAM with it- the ram is PC2700 (333mhz), non-ECC, ubuffered, non-parity, 184 pin. Now, I have just purchased a new DIMM. This one is
    1gb PC3200 (400mhz), non-ECC, Unbuffered, non-parity, HIGH DENSITY- DUAL IN LINE, 128 x 64, 184 pin
It doesnt work and my system refuses to boot up. I checked out the specs of the 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum, and it says in the table that you can only use 400mhz DDR RAM with an 800mhz FSB processor (which I have). It says it supports 400mhz RAM, "DUAL CHANNEL", non-ECC, unbuffered memory, but no mention of "HIGH DENSITY" or "DUAL IN LINE". Is there a difference between "DUAL CHANNEL" and "DUAL IN-LINE". Also, does anyone know what the difference is between 128 x 4 and 128 x 64, they are both 1gb? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! I have seen some RAM from the same dealer which is not "HIGH DENSITY" and has the 128 x 4 configuration, and is still a 1gb module. Is that safe to buy? What RAM do I need (in detail) for my motherboard. Thanks!

Always useful with a complete systemspec.including PSU and biosversion, so please make one.
Can´t see anything wrong with the basic RAM specification - it also matches the MoBo basic specifications:
    - Supports four unbuffered DIMM of 2.5V DDR SDRAM.
    - Supports up to 4GB memory size without ECC.
    - Supports Dual channel DDR266/333/400/433/466/500/533 MHz and up.
Have you tried removing the old RAM and booting only with the new 1GB stick alone ?
Using mixed RAM, sometimes works in "Single mode" (see mobo manual), but is not recommended.
Running Dual-channel ( 2x512 or 1024x2 ) is preferable and gives best performance, but then you need two identical sticks.
You may also need to increase RAM voltage some in bios (example 2.7v) to achieve best stability.
If you have some RAM compability issues with 1GB sticks - 2x512 RAM stick would be safer and give better performance, unless your aiming for more then 2GB in total.
    You can also read about the RAM testreport here;
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/testreport_pdf/6728v2.0/memory.pdf
About "Dual In line Memory Module" - I think it´s the long version for older DIMM description.
Just like "Double Data Rate" is the long version for DDR RAM.
DDR means Double Data Rate RAM (in opposition to the SDRAM or Single Data Rate). DDR RAM bends the transfer rate for clock cycle. It can go quicker because it executes 2 instructions for cycle of clock of the RAM instead of an only instruction like it is the case of the SDR.

  • BT Cloud App for Mac - Upload freeze issues?

Anyone experiencing freeze issues during upload sessions?
I just downloaded the app yesterday and kicked off an upload of 20K (ish) files.  It progressed nicely through the day, but clearly froze at some point during the night.  Following a reboot I've seen a further freeze in the last couple of hours and resorted to closing/re--opening the app.

    Hi there,
Thanks for replying.  I have had issues with this continually throughout the upload.  I've managed to back-up just over 8Gb since Saturday afternoon, but not without a bit of coaxing (closing and re-starting the app every time it appears to freeze.).  In fact my upload has just finished within the last few minutes.  I've left it on after I've gone to bed on two evenings, but it's clear by morning that the app froze at a much earlier point.  I'm not on Infinity yet, but I do get a rock solid 1Mb upload so whilst the upload rate isn't wild, it would be adequate if not for the reliability issue.
Basically the client seems to freeze after a certain time, but there doesn't seem to be any particular pattern in terms of when it happens.
I'm really excited about using BT Cloud, having had problems with several other similar services.  I love the fact that it doesn't mess with your local file copy, and that it doesn't expect the user to work 'in the cloud', and that it iteratively looks for changes and just deals with them.
The iPad app seems pretty good, other than the wildly random way the sub folders in my Documents folder display.  I have a lot of sub folders.  I know there's a search bar, but still, a simple alphabet order approach would be better.
Happy to provide any further input wrt the Mac app stability issue.

  • LiteOn SOHW-1633S problems on Neo2 54g Platinum

    Hello everyone,
recently I bought MSI Neo2 54 Platinum mobo with 3200+ AMD64 on 939 socket. Everything is just fine, exept one thing - every time I access CD Win XP goes mad:
    1. If I see properties of my LiteOn SOHW-1633S DVD-RW drive in device manager, don't touch any settings and just press "OK", XP crashes with blue screen;
    2. Everytime (100%) I insert Audio CD in tray and use _any_ audio cd playback app to play it, XP crashes with blue screen, complaining about CDFS error and mentioning something about gearAspiWDM.sys driver;
    3. Usualy, when I insert data CD, I have to wait  very long for drive to read it, but when  CD is spinned up, reading is OK, but if spinning stops because let's say I read some pdf out of CD for some time, then drive cannot read that disk again on second access, and I have to reload (eject) CD to make it be read again.
First, I thought, that problem is caused of some buggy firmware of my Liteon SOHW-1633S, but the same problem persists even reflashing drive with newest firmware from site.
Second, I checked BIOS settings, all DMA and PIO settings are set to AUTO, enabled only "IDE prefetch" option, DMA on all SATA disabled (should it be anabled, btw?), so no "super tunning" options are set.
And last, after installing XP, I went straight to nvidia site, downloaded and installed 5.10 version of unified nforce chipset driver. No drivers from MSI mobo CD at all on my system, and corecell and other msi utilities are installed, but not started.
I tried that 5.10 with SW IDE driver installed and without, effect is the same, system still hangs on CD access.  Any recommendations, tests and opinions are very appreciated.
P.S. AMD64 939 3200+, 512MB DualChannel PQI, Seagate Baracuda 160 SATA, Liteon SOHW-1633S, Leadtek FX5700 VIVO. All nVidia drivers from site, no drivers from CDs.
    Thank YOU very much,
    -c.

    WELCOME.
    1) ALWAYS set ANY CD/DVD-RW as secondary master in your system.
    2) Please give full system specs, including PSU rails (look at my sig).
    3) What about your IDE cable (does it has 80 conductive wires or is the one that has 40)?
    4) If none of the above mentioned works, this could be a memory problem. Try with other type of memory or you can run memtest for 1 day to see if your memory is faulty.
    Edyros!

  • MSI Neo2 Platinum (Winchester3200) - strange instability issue in Windows

    My specs:
    Winchester 3200 CPU
    MSI Neo2 Platinum 1.4 bios
    2 x 512 Kingston PC4000 3-3-3-8-1
    Gainward 5900Xt GS
Seagate 160Gb SATA on SATA port 3
The problem seems quite odd to me, so I decided to post here. Generally, the PC is stable, passes more than an hour of Prime95, 3d marks run fine etc.. but in Windows (XP Sp1) I'm getting this annoying issue: when I let the system run idle for a while, with none or some windows open but no programs active, my computer literally freezes. I can move the mouse, but i can't open any windows or click any buttons. Still, the keyboard is responding so I hit ALT + CTRL + DEL and get the Windows Security window. There I click on the Task Manager and all i get is an empty desktop, with the wallpaper but no icons or any activity whatsoever.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Nope.. And I hardly believe it's a software issue. Will try a fresh install of XP today, nut the reason of such strange behaviour escapes me :] Cmon people, any ideas ?
If you problem isn't related to software, then the only other thing that comes to mind is that overclocking is the culprit.  I'm not overclocking anything (except my 3d card, and that only slightly) and have no such problems with my K8N Neo2.  You describe a strange problem, certainly, and in my own experience such behaviors--system runs great in some normal situtations but in others it doesn't--have always been related to overclocking of some kind.  If you aren't overclocking anything then it's probably software induced.  Good luck!
