MSI neo2 Platinum Instability

I just got my whole new computer setup within the last few days.  The problem I have come to now is that my system pretty much randomly reboots itself every so often( like 1-5 hours).  I've had this happen both while the system is under load being burning a dvd and also when i'm just surfin the net.  One of the first things I did was to flash the bios to version 1.4 before i installed the os.  I also read a guide that I saw someone post on here about the settings for the neo2 motherboard and adjusted what was needed accordingly and checked that my bios is set about the same for stability.  At first I thought it was just my video card screwing it up as when I put the system together it was with a very old card but then I got the new one and the same thing keeps happening.  Then I thought it may be that my windows installation was corrupt or just a bad one so i formatted my drive and redid the installation, but to no avail, I still got the same random reboots.  The temperature readouts in the bios are 37 for the cpu and 30 for the case so i don't think its overheating or anything.  I am wondering if anyone has experienced similar problems or knows of this problem and can lend a suggestion to what the problem is.
My setup is as follows:
MSI K8N neo2 Platinum
AMD 3500 90nm
1 gig OCZ pc3200 platinum rev. 2
ATI All-In-Wonder 9800
OCZ 420 watt power supply
western digital 74 gig raptor
thanx for the help

turn of auto matic reboots so you can see the bsod
and post stop code and any driver etc it blames
Memtest86
I'm not sure how to turn off automatic reboots.  I only see the blue screen for literally a split second just before it reboots.
I'm using WinXP btw and have all updates installed incause that matters. Anyway everytime it restarted in the first install it used to blame the video driver but with this new second install of windows i have a different video card and different drivers so it doesn't say "device driver wrong for video card(or something similar) anymore.  Now it says pretty much the same thing but doesn't limit it to the video card, it just says device drivers are wrong or something like that.

  • MSI Neo2 Platinum (Winchester3200) - strange instability issue in Windows

    My specs:
    Winchester 3200 CPU
    MSI Neo2 Platinum 1.4 bios
    2 x 512 Kingston PC4000 3-3-3-8-1
    Gainward 5900Xt GS
Seagate 160Gb SATA on SATA port 3
The problem seems quite odd to me, so I decided to post here. Generally, the PC is stable, passes more than an hour of Prime95, 3d marks run fine etc.. but in Windows (XP Sp1) I'm getting this annoying issue: when I let the system run idle for a while, with none or some windows open but no programs active, my computer literally freezes. I can move the mouse, but i can't open any windows or click any buttons. Still, the keyboard is responding so I hit ALT + CTRL + DEL and get the Windows Security window. There I click on the Task Manager and all i get is an empty desktop, with the wallpaper but no icons or any activity whatsoever.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Nope.. And I hardly believe it's a software issue. Will try a fresh install of XP today, nut the reason of such strange behaviour escapes me :] Cmon people, any ideas ?
If you problem isn't related to software, then the only other thing that comes to mind is that overclocking is the culprit.  I'm not overclocking anything (except my 3d card, and that only slightly) and have no such problems with my K8N Neo2.  You describe a strange problem, certainly, and in my own experience such behaviors--system runs great in some normal situtations but in others it doesn't--have always been related to overclocking of some kind.  If you aren't overclocking anything then it's probably software induced.  Good luck!

  • MSI NEO2 Platinum, problem with mouse Genius PS2 optical

    Hello,
I have a MSI NEO2 Platinum motherboard with a mouse Genius optical PS2. When the S.O. init the mouse is not detected, I unplug and plug again the PS2 port and the mouse work perfectly ! ... The mouse is working perfectly, I test it in another PC, the problem is the motherboard !
The same situation is on Windows XP Professional and Linux Ubuntu 5.10.
Please help me, thanks for your attention !
    Raúl.

    Raúl,
The PS2 slot is NOT a hot plug! If you remove and reinstall it while there is power to the mobo you stand a very good chance of destroying the PS2 Slot.
    Take Care,
    Richard

thanks for your help, but it´s still doing it, the cables are all well conected, right now don´t know what I´m gone do, may be try with rma
I'm sorry, I wasn't clear.  Your mobo manual will have at least two different LED connections.  Only one is correct for your case. To make matters worse, it's possible that your mobo LED pins and your case LED connectors aren't color coated.  The mobo I have (Neo 4 Plat) was like that.  My Power LED switch on my case was different that what the book showed.  If you have it plugged into the green area on the mobo then try the black area for the Power LED.  Now if that doesn't work then it's something else. Remember after you plug it into the black area, remember to reset your CMOS as before.
If that doesn't work, did your board come with a D-bracket?  The little bracket with LED lights on it used to diagnostic utility.

  • MSI neo2 platinum problem, forced to reset BIOS everytime I turn on the PSU

I just got my neo2 platinum mobo. Everytime I switch it ON all the led's at the back (diagnostic) turn red/orange and never turn green.
I have to reset the bios everytime to get it to post successfully. (bios is the original bios, no flashes done)
    Processor: 3000+ (939)
Anyone else have this problem? what causes it?
[update] the bios version is 1.3 which is the latest on the msi website
    System Specs..
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 90nm (socket 939)
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    1 GB Kingston HyperX DDR 400 CS2
    SBlive
    Nvidia GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB MEM
    Logitech MX510
1x80GB WD HDD with 8MB cache
1x120GB WD HDD with 8MB cache
    Lite-On 48x CD-RW
    NEC 16X DVD RW Drive
RAIDMAX Black Aluminum Gaming Case with 6 case fans and 420W PSU

I think the power supply may be the problem
Once you reset the bios you don't need the amps to spin up the drives, as they are already spinning, saving you about 3 amps I bet. If the newer bios doesn't help, try unplugging half those case fans, the non boot drive, and take the cd's out of you optical drives so they dont spin up, then try cold booting your box a couple times. If it works you know you need a new power supply.
If it doesn't perhaps you've got a grounding problem? Are you positive that nothing metal is touching your motherboard where it shouldn't? If that isn't it, Id  assume the cmos never really clears, and then take the battery out of the motherboard for a good hour while the power supply is unplugged, then give it another shot. I've seen a bunch of DFI boards do weird stuff like that before, the exact same thing actually. Nvidia has a few odd issues with the nforce chipsets and the cmos.
Oh, since you asked, 3000+ is 1.8 ghz. It will probably run at 2.4ghz easy (1.4 volts), thats a 90nm chip

  • MSI Neo2 Platinum should beep if the cpu is dead?

I have a Neo2 Platinum and a 3500+. When I try to start the computer the fan starts to spin but the monitor is black. The computer doesnt make any beeping sound. I know its either the CPU or the motherboard that is broken. Should the motherboard make any sound if the CPU is dead?
My D-bracket says "Early Chipset Initialization" and "Bios Sign On" (shows info about logo, cpu brand name etc..)
Depends on how I start up the computer (psu power switch or button)
The problem started a few weeks ago. The computer made lots of reboots and now I cant even access bios. Ive replaced all other components (ram, psu, HDD) but nothing happens. So is there any way to find out if its the motherboard or the cpu?

Quote from: bennyfax on 25-October-06, 07:59:57
Ok thanks for trying to help me but its not the HDD's. Its the motherboard or the cpu. I just dont know which one.
your CPU is not dead for sure.
try barabone setup,(leave only basic parts which is necessary to boot) and Clear CMOS Guide(remove power cord from PSU before proceed).
test with one stick of memory only.

  • OEM Visiontek AGP GeForce2 GTS, 32MB DDR on MSI Neo2 Platinum as temp fix?

I'm taking my ATI 9700 Pro to ATI to have it RMA'd for some rolling interference lines. I've done troubleshooting and its the card.
Will I have any problems using this Geforce2 GTS AGP card as a temporary replacement while I wait for the ATI card to be fixed? I'm swapping it and I get $5 for my Matrox G400 max AGP card. For obvious reasons, I'm not keeping and using the G series Matrox G400 since it won't work in my PC with the MSI Neo2 and BIOS 1.4 etc etc
So any problems using this as a temporary replacement?
OEM Visiontek AGP GeForce2 GTS, 32MB DDR
    thanx for any feedback,

Forgot to do that! Its working fine though. I'll try to clean out the old ATI drivers. This is only temporary and I'll be wiping this system clean and starting over anyways.
So far its ok. Another troubleshooting verification that the 9700 Pro I had was faulty. With this gforce2 gts the rolling horizontal lines are absent.

  • MSI NEO2 PLATINUM Shut down

OK has anyone had this happen to the when I overclock my cpu to say 3gig and try to push 1.85volts through it my mobo and everything just shuts down the only thing that remains powered is the power led on my case??? Very odd I was thinking it could be my antec true power 550W psu but it does supply 24amps on the 12v rail but then again even though my cpu is prometeia cooled the bios still reads the temps wrong now does the msi have a cpu protection built in as in a setting in the bios because I couldnt find it ??
    Any answers would be great
    Cheers

No the system doesnt start back up it just black screens and powers off all except the on led when I do oc some times it will restart in safe mode and I know this cpu does over 3gig as it has in another machine at 1.85v thats why I was asking about a motherboard or cpu protection shut down thingy ??? Oh and yes my agp/pci is always locked at 66

  • MSI Neo2 Platinum will not POST, but fans spin.

I bought this board about 2 months ago.
I install the board and it works fine, until a few weeks ago. Im playing fear and it crashes into BSOD...then every time i try to load a game BSOD. This points to the memory- so i look at my DDR booster, and teh memory is a little off...i correct it and the game loads fine. I play for a little longer, then exit to windows and then the computer just starts BSODing like every 5 minutes. So i was like " it" im going to cut the memory back...strangly, the only dividers that work were 133 and 183...the rest just did not work.
Then finally, i restart the computer, and no POST screen. I clear CMOS, nothing. Take the battery out for an hour, nothing. Take the memory out, no POST...I dont get it...the fans spin and everything powers on, but no signal is sent to the monitor.
Then today, a few weeks later, I plug in just a PSU and a video card.  Same thing happens:  Fans spin, no POST.  oddly enough, whenever power is supplied to teh mobo it turns on, it doesnt wait for a power button to be pushed.
2 things that might help diagnose the problem:
Almost every BSOD pointed to ntfs.sys
The PSU makes that clicking sound like its restarting about every 10 seconds when i boot up and there is no POST.
Anyone know what i need to do? All other componants work fine in a AV8 3rd Eye, so it is the mobo.
    Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum.  Please post complete system specs by creating a "sig" as described in the forum rules. Be sure to include complete power supply specs (brand, model and amps on 3.3, 5 and 12 volts) as shown on the label on the side of the power supply itself.  The fact that a component works in the ABIT board does not mean that it is not the problem in your board, so don't forget to list all components in reasonable detail (e.g., memory size brand specs, hd, cards).  Please confirm that you board is MSI #7025 too.  Good luck.
EDIT - We need to know your Bios version and whether you flashed, and if so, how and from and to what versions.
fixed.  All info should be in sig.  I have tried 2 different PSUs, my Powersream 520 and my Antec SL400 all to no avail.
I did flash my bios via booting off a floppy to the most recent beta bios, but it worked fine for a good while before eventually failing.
All the componants in the sig were working fine in the mobo, and my HTT was 305x9 Stable.  I was using a DDR Booster.
And im sorry, what do you mean by MSI #7025?

  • Is it worth buying MSI Neo2 Platinum...

So I figured that with 3 sticks of RAM, you cannot have dual channel on nForce 3 boards (even though you can on nForce 2), and my overclock would be not nearly as good...
So, should I maybe stick with Socket 754 and not 939?
Would FOUR sticks (4x256) give dual channel?
It seems like Neo2 would be a waste of money for me...
EDIT:  OK, I read that TWO sticks of DOUBLE-SIDED RAM are not that well supprted either, BUT would TWO DOUBLE-SIDED RAM chips give DUAL channel at least?

    2) 754 boards do NOT support dual channel RAM, period.  I think you can put dual channel ram on a 754 neo plat, but it will only operate in single channel mode.    Regardless of whether you have two or three sticks installed.
BTW, get the 939.  The price is not that much higher.  Good luck.
    DIRECTLY FROM FAQ:
The memory controller of AMD64 does not officially support 400mhz speed on two doublesided sticks of RAM, or on 3 sticks of RAM (regardless of single/double side), however this board seems to be very tolerant concerning this, change your ram setting from auto to 200, and see if it helps - if not, try with other RAM, there's no guarantee it will be able to function at 400MHz.
Please note that this is a limitiation in the AMD 64 CPU's memory-controller, and not a limit in the motherboard!
CAN I GET DUAL CHANNEL WITH THREE STICKS OF RAM?  IF NOT, then there is NO POINT in 939 because it would be single channel JUST LIKE 754...

  • Laptop migration? From MSI Neo2 Platinum to ???

Hello folks. Long time no post. Although I have not been using my PC for heavy gaming or other intensive uses, no overclocking etc, so perhaps my feedback is not descriptive of anything out of the ordinary, in fact, less than ordinary, my setup has non-the-less performed nearly perfectly. I suspect it has been largely due to MS XP Pro. I did use an ATI 9700 Pro which I upgraded to an ATI 9800 Pro, but now I am back using a Geforce2 GTS AGP card simply because I play zero games.
Even though this PC works well, I often wonder if I could migrate to a laptop for various reasons. I would not be tied to a single desk. I could use a laptop in my bedroom, home office (if I keep one) living room, kitchen, away at work, train and bus, at conferences etc etc. The trouble is, now that I have this PC up and working great, I find it hard to swallow the idea of migrating to a laptop which will un-doubtabley be slower. Even a notebook with a Pentium M 1.86 ghz or higher, or an AMD64 mobile turion will be slower because the hard drives are limited to 4200 or 5400 rpm. I do not do intensive gaming or heavy apps now, but I do not want to rule them out. Digital video editing, graphic design, photo editiing, multi-tasking etc
In view of what my PC is now, and what a laptop can give me, what can I look at? Is it worth it? If I migrate, I don't want to spend any more than $1500 CDN after taxes, which works out to around $1299 CDN. I could keep my desktop PC, but that is quite costly and I already spend a bit much on stuff, so it would seem almost like wasteful duplication.
My minimum requirements for a notebook would be:
    1.73 ghz Pentium M CPU
512 MB DDR (prefer 1GB but can upgrade later)
80 GB HDD (preferabley 100 GB 5400 rpm)
dual-layer DVD burner (LG or similar with DVD ram would be nice)
    15.4" widescreen
So has anybody with a PC like mine migrated to a laptop/notebook...and if so, how are you finding it?
Any suggestions for which PC would suit my needs of displacing my desktop? (desktop specs are in my signature of course)
thanx in advance for any feedback,

The small size comes at a cost. But means you can take your self moblie and still have computing power
As for the speed of drives It can effect a few things.
I wanted to see how good the transfer rates were on my caddy: "300GB Diamondmax 10"   4.5 GB music (MP3) + 4.5 GB BF1942 and a few mod's. Total 9GB of of mixed file sizes.  I ran the first tests with a BATCH file and left it running for 3 hours.
    The Mp3 took on AVE: 7 min, BF1942 on AVE: 6.5 min. To a USB2 PC (2400XP, 512DDR, 17GB seagate ATA66)
But to the labtop  Mp3 AVE 25min, BF1942 AVE 25 min. On firewire or USB2. (P4 1.5 Ghz, 512DDR, 60GB HD- 4200 RPM) Off the top of my head the spec's mite have been a bit different but I know the drive was 4200 RPM (Friends labtop from over 1 year ago) Also the update oif info, movement, access time of folders from the caddy was poor when connected to the Labtop. This did not happen as bad on the USB 1 PC or other rig I've tried it with. And I've test it on a few Rigs.
    USB 1 Mp3: 70 min+ (I stoped after 5 min I'am not waiting that long)
I must say after all that the caddy held out well for heat
