MSI Neo4 Platinum SiI3114 sata?

Hello,
The nForce SaTA-II ports cause major instability on my system if used to the excess. (i.e. I cant use my computer at all if all 4 are in use, but for now its been fine with 1 drive)
Now i spotted the Silicon image controller there. The problem is, even if i plug my drives to it, they are detected during bootup, but they wont show in windows. Why is that? I just want to access my data. Wouldnt it be STUPID if Id need to format my drives to be able to access them?
How to disable the RAID feature in the silicon image controller?

The mobo BIOS entry is "OnBoard SiI3114 RAID" with "enable/disable" options. Seems the RAID is built in, and its impossible to use the controller without RAID, which means formatting my drives. Or am I wrong?

you have used 2 SATA connected to Silicon ctrl right? well by default Silicon ctrl are configured to operate as RAID. to make your sata hdd which are connected to Sil ctrl, you need to enter into Silicon ctrl utility and to setup them in array. then to be reformated from the OS(Silicon drivers need to loaded as well.).
other way is Silicon ctrl to be configured as plain SATA, that can be done from BIOS, look for Silicon ctrl option. note such thing may not exist. when you enter into BIOS try key combination "shift+f2", then "alt+f3" then search for option to change Silicon ctrl operation mode from RAID to SATA.

MSI Neo4 Platinum with MSI GF6600GT PCI-e Freezes on games

I'm having this serious problem that my new build system freezes on games. Sometimes I can play for a few hours and sometimes I can play only a few minutes before the system freezes completely. Only a hardware reset helps in this case.
This is my hardware setup:
MSI Neo4 Platinum
MSI GF6600GT PCI-e
2 x 512MB DDR400 memory(in dual mode)
AMD 3200+ 64-bit processor
Sound Blaster Audigy
DVD Writer
Floppy
I'm using Windows XP SP2
What I tryd:
Tested with other RAM modules, same trouble
Reinstalled windows xp, same trouble
Tryd all kind of driver versions, same trouble
Flashed bios to 1.9, same trouble
Put a Zalman Cooler on the Video card (temperature now between 40 and 60 degrees in games instead of 80-100 degrees), same trouble
This is where my questions come:
There are two hardware components I cannot switch to try:
The mainboard and the Video card. Whitch one is most likely to be broken??
I have read in the manual of the mainboard that the PSU should have at least 18A on the 12+ signal. My PSU only haves 15A there. While I doubt this results in problems like this I still like to know if it does!
Please help me out on this one!

Have tried older drivers for you GFX, I find the late 6XXX work better for most games. You mite want to check the system is stable with:
Prime95, Memtest86, 3D mark 03 & 05.
You mite be having the same problems as "easlern", his games would lock up. This was due to to a problem with onboard sound Sound Blaster.

Anyway, one of these myriad, desperate attempts must have worked because I get neither audio stutters (should have been a freaking clue in the first place, duh!) nor lock ups.
Since this is the first PC I've built, I was certain I had to have screwed something up hardware-wise or found some combination that had incompatibilities. If it WAS just the freaking sound card driver I'm going to leave this place in shame and never post again! In my defense, the MSI Update utility didn't show any updated sound drivers for me, and I had assumed it was being pre-empted by my SB Live in any case.
I was convinced this problem was (if it is indeed gone) a video card issue but I can't say it ever was without putting the 6600 back in and running for several hours. I'm going to bet it was the AC97 though because nVidia boards have always been fantastic for me, I haven't had any actual motherboard issues, my RAM and CPU are just fine, and Win2k has never let me down.
Don't assume anything, though, I've learned.
One thing to note: when I was checking out the AC97, I noticed it was *sharing* IRQ 20 with the nForce NIC detector (might have a different name, I can't remember right now). Apparently this is a capability of Win2k to share IRQs but it kind of added to my suspicions anyway.
I'll let you know how the next few sessions go and whether this issue is still an issue

My feeble attempt at a MB comparison - Asus A8N-E vs MSI Neo4 Platinum

I just thought I'd share a post I just finished submitting at the Asus forum. Here's my experience, in a nutshell, with both the Asus A8N-E and the K8N Neo4 Platinum:
I've decided to give up on the A8N-E and Asus (for now) in favor of the MSI Neo4 Platinum. The layout of the Asus board is top notch, but there are some significant issues with it.
The CUSL2 turned me into a huge Asus fan, but no more. After a week of playing with both here's my review:
Asus A8N-E (v2.0)
Pro's
-Superior Layout - See Neo4 cons below. However, there are two electrolytic capacitors on the back end that had to be nudged out of the way to install my 6600GT.
-No superfluous features.
-Stable
-Performance on par with other nF4 mobos.
-I love the Ctrl-Esc wake up feature and will sorely miss it.
Con's
-Will not run 2225 OCZ Gold Dual Channel RAM any faster than 2325 (bios must be reflashed).
-Quirky recovery features. You need the mobo CD or floppy disk. Also, there was one instance where it failed to post (due to 2225 memory timings) while running v1008 and I kept getting a BIOS checksum error when reflashing with v1008. Had to reflash with v1006. Also, one time I didn't get a checksum error, just a lot of beeps. Clearing the CMOS proved troublesome as shown in the next issue.
-Cheap battery terminal. IMO you should not pull the battery when clearing the CMOS with the Jumper (even though the manual says you should). It doesn't have a lever to eject the battery (just two little teeth holding it in) and my battery lost contact with the terminals when I put it back in. Afterwards, when I unplugged the PS the settings in the BIOS were reset.
-Somewhat limited instruction manual.
-Asus LiveUpdate failed to connect to a server on several repeated attempts. It never connected successfully.
-There was no Mobo installation CD in my box!
-This forum software and layout is really limited and frustrating.
-It's been three days now and still no reply to my tech support inquery regarding 2225 memory timings.
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (v1.0)
Pro's
-Runs 2225 OCZ Gold Dual Channel RAM at 2225, no issues whatsoever.
-More reliable Bios/System utility. There's a button to load BIOS setup defaults in case of problems. Autorecovery feature flashes factory BIOS version embedded in mobo Core Cell chip.
-Packaging is simply beautiful. Obviously not a big reason to buy it but trust me, it's exceptional.
-Extensive instruction manual, test report, and large fold out color diagram of layout.
-Add-on module with diagnostic LED's.
-Stable
-Performance on par with other nF4 mobos.
-MSI version of LiveUpdate worked flawlessy on every occasion.
-Cheaper than A8N-E with rebate.
-Firewire port
Con's
-Inferior layout, although still better than others (ie Epox 9NPA+ and ATX power connectors). SATA connectors get in the way of my HDD's. x16 PCIe socket sits below x4 PCIe and x1 PCIe slots. This orientation causes my long 6600GT card to get in the way of the back end of one of my HDD's.
-Who need's DUAL Lan? And the ability to run 8 SATA devices is overkill IMO.
-CPU Heatsink Fan mount backplate is GLUED to the backside of the PCB. Had to remove it with a credit card and a hair dryer to make room for my Zalman.
As I'm sure most of your would agree the Memory timing issue with the A8N-E was the deal breaker. I'm sure in time Asus will get around to fixing this with a bios revision. The faulty battery interface was also a downer.
For now, so long Asus! Good luck A8N owners!

One big pro for the MSI you forgot to mention is this forum. This is by far one of the best forums for any motherboard manufacturer (if only ATI would get the hint ).
IMO I like the 8 SATA ports. I have 4 hard drives in my system, and I am desperately needing more. I have one more SATA slot to fill before I am out. Some people are absolute packrats (like me ) and they need the additional hard drive ports. The other benefit is you can end up using this as a low end server board (which I will be doing in the next couple of weeks). It is by far cheaper then getting a system with opterons. Instead I can just get an X2 for alot less, plus I don't have to spend the extra to get registered memory.
The dual lan can be really help who use ICS. This way they don't have to purchase a router.
Both of these I don't see as cons, as they really don't cause a problem. For you I just wouldn't list them as pros.
But thanks for sharing your ideas, hopefully this can become helpful to others who are determining what mobo to buy.

Memory not recognized on MSI Neo4 Platinum SLI

I just installed another 512mb of RAM on this system:
MSI Neo4 Platinum SLI
2 x 512mb Corsair XMS XL PRO
1 x 512mb Corsair XMS XL (the one that doesnt work)
IDE HDD
Windows XP PRO
BIOS, and every program i run that can see system specs shows that the infact all 3 Sticks
are recognizable. Though...Windows and a program that shows me my physical memory max both
point out i have only 1 gig of RAM!?
It's there, just not being used?
Now the only difference with the XL version and the XL PRO version is the heatspreader,
everything else is the same....so nothing should be conflicting.
Since the computer somehow knows all my part's details..im thinking just because
the new ram doesnt have PRO that it may not be recognized to work together.
Even so...ram should downclock etc with this motherboard...so this stupid little name
issue shouldnt cause the computer to ignore the ram!
I tried switching DIMM slots, no luck.
Any ideas?

It's a AMD64 dual memory channel system motherboard/CPU.
Valid memory populations are
1.stick in one of the channels .(single mode 64bits)
1.stick in each channel .(dual mode 128bits)
2. sticks in one of the channels.(single mode 64bits)
4.sticks ,2 in each channel.(dual mode 128bits)
3 sticks is n/a.
The population on memory controller , it's initialization and modeselection , single/dual mode is chosen by the A64 cpu.
It's been said that later rev.E cpus can autoselect unmatched population between channels (of e.g 3.sticks) and
set the whole memory pool in single mode.
But i have never seen anyone successfully test/run it .

Msi neo4 platinum + xfx 6600gt pci express card..

This can be a stupid question
But i just builded a new system, with a msi neo4 platinum motherboard and a xfx 6600 GT pci express videocard.
which runs great, but when i start my system i see the following line (form the bios)
PCIe VGA LINK WIDTH X 4
And in my nvidia drivers i see this :
Bus: PCI Express X4
Is this correct ?
I thought it should say X16 or am i thinking the wrong way ?

the videocard is equipped with and x16 interface, and the motherboard must show X16..
I asked a friend of mine, who has been playing with my machine yesterday en he says
it did show X16 in the bios, when starting the machine...
I did the following things :
- Removed an replaced videocard, did not help.
- Reset cmos, dit not help.
- Checked bios for an option, dit not help.
And also flashed the motherboard to version 1.2, dit also not work.
Looks like the motherboard or the videocard is not working properly anymore...
Anyone got an idea ?

Dual channel with 4 slots on MSI Neo4 Platinum

I read from the booklet that the dual channel on the MSI neo4 platinum will only run at 333mhz when using the 4 slots with dual sided chips on the Dimms.
Anyone knows if there's a way to run them dual channel at 400mhz.

Why did MSI deleted in newer BIOS versions these wonderful memory speed deviders. In older ones you could set your memory speed on 130, 140, 150, 160 MHz, and now minimal value is i think 160MHz. WHY ? WHY ? WHY ? WHY ? WHY ?

To get more vdimm voltage there is a mod for the motherboard. will void any warranty on the motherboard.

I use the Murdock bios and board runs great with it.
Using ocz platinum 2 ram I did not need the extra voltage on the vdimm
Vdimm I have not used, but some friends of mine do and it works just fine.

MSI NEO4 Platinum + DUAL CORE detection problem after soft reboot

I just build a new AMD dual core system (4800+) and it consistently fails to detect the second core after a soft reboot from windows Xp. The MSI NEO4 Platinum came pre-flashed with the latest bios version 1.B. If power off or use the reset button I can consistently get it to detect both processors. Anyone else having this problem? Or know of a solution?

Hi, I did a upgrade from a 3200 venice to a Opty 165.[This is a different situation than your new build] I deleted the uniprocessor ACPI from the device manager before I removed the old cpu. It was a bit weird for me in that at first the bios saw it as a 165 dual core then the next time it would come up as single core. It went back and forth a few times between single and dual core in bios. I tinkered with a few things in the bios but not really sure if it helped but it eventualy stayed as dual core in bios and showes as dual core in windows. I have my MPS table version set to 1.4 in bios [ but it was this before change in cpu] also my IOAPIC is now greyed out [unable to change it, but it wasn't before] - both these are in Advanced bios features. In power management I have the ACPI standby state set to auto. Hope some of this might help you.

Help : MSI Neo4 Platinum (non-SLi)

I just switch from a long time Asus Intel user to MSI AMD based rig (I am more into video editing & encoding than gaming). I bought a MSI Neo4 Platinum with AMD 3200+ (Venice) and from my old system, I have the Corsair TwinX XMS PC4000 ram and a RAID 0 setup with 2 X WD 74GB Raptor.
Can anyone help me on :
1) which slot should I installed my ram in order to run Dual Channel
2) How do I perform moderate overclocking with this MSI Neo4
3) which will be recommended HSF for moderate overclocking
4) Will I experience the 219 BUG when overclocking

They are all good heatsinks, I do not think you will go wrong with any of them.
As for the BIOS, the difference is Award vs Phoenix. I use mobos from Abit, ASUS, and MSI, you get used to them, if you can get though one BIOS, you will have little trouble getting used to the other.
As for moving over from "The Dark Side of the Force" over to AMD, welcome to the other side, you will love it and never look back.

New Drives - boot Neo4 Platinum from SATA II?

I am going to re-configure my AMD 64 3200+ K8N Neo4 Platinum mobo to have 2 Hitachi T7K250 SATA II hard drives (currently PC has a single IDE drive that will be removed). I have XP PRO original as well as SP2 on a separate disc. Can anyone suggest a course of action here? Any experience with booting from SATA II? I guess I could leave the IDE drive in place simply to hold the OS and put the 2 SATA II drives in for data.

XP64bit installation halts, K8N Neo4 Platinum - No SATA drives found?

My setup:
Athlon 64 3500+
K8N Neo4 Platinum
2GB OCZ 3200 Premier
2) WD Sata 80GB HD's (for RAID 0)
Nvidia 6800GT Extreme VGA
I was recently lucky enough to get my hands on a real Windows XP Pro64bit Extended Edition. I gathered quite a few 64bit drivers which claim to do the job (so they say.)
However I ran into a very strange issue during installation.
My main concern was getting RAID drivers to utilize after pressing F6 during the Windows install. Unfortunately I could not find Nvidia drivers so I went with the Silicon Image Sil3114 64bit drivers I got from their website. Copied them to a disk and thought I was ready to rock N roll. I have updated all BIOS to latest versions as of the date of this post.
Now I went into the RAID BIOS and setup my RAID 0 Array and both SATA drives are shown. All went well in this dept.
I began my installtion of XP64 and pressed F6 to install the RAID drivers. Popped the floppy in and the driver files were copied successfully.
I continued on to the point where you are prompted to setup Windows XP and it searches for any previous installs.
I continue to where I should get the dislmaimer and to press F8, however the install halts and say no hard drives were found. Setup cannot continue.
Any ideas as to why my drives are not being detected during installation? They show up fine under the RAID setup BIOS.
Any info or thoughts is truly appreciated.

You need to make your own floppy for the nvidia 64 ide drivers.

MSI Neo4 Platinum SATA Drivers Question

I've recently purchased the above motherboard and am about to install Windows XP on it, and I have a 250GB Maxtor SATA drive. Now, do I need to bother slipstreaming the SATA Drivers into my XP installation CD? I had heard rumours that the device will detect as IDE and work properly until you give it the right drivers later on - is this true, or do I need to mess with an install CD?

If you have only 1 SATA disk or do not plan to use RAID then YES you do not need a floppy to load using F6. XP includes standard drivers.
If you plan to add a 2nd disk and use RAID later then I would advise you to load both the nvatabus and nvraid drivers from a floppy using F6 at the start of XP install, as you may have to re-install XP otherwise.

Stock fan problems, Arctic Cooling Silencer Ultra 64 and MSI Neo4 Platinum

A few days ago, the stock-fan of my Amd-64 CPU(+3000) started to running at 4500-5000 rpm at default speed, when before it had always done at 3000-3300. (official maximum stock amd-fan speed I think). To avoid so high and noisy default speeds, I have activated “Smart CPU Fan Target” in Bios to keep CPU under 50 º C and obviously now speeds are much lower. It helps to diminish the noise and to minimize the fatigue of fan, but obviously CPU run hotter. Even though I think it is in a safe range of temps (40 – 50 ºC). Nevertheless I’m worried about the odd behaviour of stock fan and what could happen in the future...
I wonder what could be wrong, cpu-fan, motherboard regulation cpu-fan system.
NB fan seems to work as always, running at 5000 rpm as ever (speed regulated by fan-mate 2). Not change is noted about.
I should aprecciate any suggestion about what is wrong ?
On the other hand, I have thought to substitute the stock-heatsink+fan by Arctic Cooling Silencer Ultra 64. But I have some doubts about it.
Does it fit in a Neo4 MB ?
I wonder if is possible to control the speed of Arctic Cooling Silencer Ultra 64 (not TC model) by Bios or under Windows via Core-Center as stock-cpu-fan is?

Thanks for the idea, but I think that it would be more prudent to wait for views about, of some owner of cpu-cooler-fan (thermal regulated or not), witch being set to start to turning at very low revolutions (ie:0--500) when computer power on.

Yes, excuse me, at first I had misunderstood you. I interpreted that your cpu-fan was unable to turn under 2000 revolutions. I means only could be regulated between 2000 and 2300 rpm. But now, I'm quite sure what you means. Your tell me that the speed of the your cpu-fan is adjustable in all its range, from 0 to 2300, only that when it turns at least of 2000, the rpm reader programs are unable to report the speed. ok?

Thank you for your advice, I already knew it was a poor performer compared to what you refer me, but, firstly, I have a chronic immune illness due which I suffer some disabilities that makes difficult to do manual labours myself . Second I use my computer for office-surfing-programming purposes. So my power needs are low, -I own a +3000 amd-64-, compared to most of you, I think (I’m not doing over clocking too).
To sum up, I’m going to pick this cooler (fan+heatsink) because is as easy of installing as stock one, enough to cool my cpu... (slightly better than stock one), and very cheap in my country. There is no more reasons to choose it.

MSI Neo4 Platinum / HT Freq.

Well after a few weeks of testing this board with a couple others and all kinds of hardware we've come across this issue. Most likely a bios update wil fix it.
It seems the HT Frequency isn't bening set right from the bios, If at stock settings for a 3200+ (200fsb x10cpu HT x5) Central Brain Identifier is reporting a 804.11MHz HTL speed. In fact all settings fron HT x5 through x1 are reported at 804.11MHz!!!
So here's where the problems begin.
When people use Winchester Core cpu's and try to over clock them. Some Winchester Core cpu's can go 300x9 but need the HT set at x4 to be able to post, x3 and they wouldn't post. But if you are still stuck at 215fsb try HT x2 and you should beable to post upto 250x9. So it's really odd, because even the ones' that can post at 215fsb and need HT x2 can scale clear upto 280x8 and complete Super PI tests w/ Clockgen.
So the Neo4 isn't treating all Winchester Core's equally, as all cpu's were tested in other mobo's and can reach a minimum of 270fsbx9 easily.
Testing was done with:
1 FX-55 SledgeHammer
1 3500+ Winchester
2 3200+ Winchester
4 3000+ Winchester
A-data ddr600 2x256 at 2.5-3-3--6
So what's a person to do? Well one person that I ran across has allready rma'd his mobo just to be back at a 215fsb. Buying 10 cpu's and getting one that works well with the Neo4 is an option but not realistic.
So I'd ask others to downloads CBI and see what your Neo4 is doing.

Hi, Im having the same problem.
I have 3200 winchester core, it will not go over 220 fsb, the same chip done 240fsb on a nforce 3, while my 3500 newcastle will do 245fsb, Im using corsair 4400 memory....
For the past week I have read a few forums and a lot of people are having this problem, I hope it will be a bios update.
I did email MSI who in turn told me that the fsb of a 3200 chip will be 200, they do not recommend 220 fsb......
we will just have to sit tight and wait for MSI, I have noticed that they are very few bios updates recently from msi....
come on MSI.........looks like asus for me if they dont resolve this issue..........

MSI NEO4 Platinum - Upgrade to bios 1.5 - ps2 mouse connector don't work

I've upgraded just today the bios of my NEO4 to the ver. 1.5. At reboot, i've set all bios parameters like they were before upgrade; now the mouse, if connected to the ps2 with an adaptor for usb mouse, don't work at all. Previously it was connected in the same way and the system was running with ver. 1.1 bios.

Have you tried just connecting the mouse to the USB port? Tried all ports? Tried a regular PS2 mouse just to test?
Did you look for any new settings that may have been added since the1.1 BIOS, Did you take notes?
Did you look for any hidden BIOS features?
Perhaps the settings you used previously just don't work the same way or may behave differently (perhaps like they are supposed to)
Maybe a setting you didn't consider before is now necessary since the upgrade.
Nothing is ever black and white with this stuff, my point is, leave no stone unturned...that should keep you busy in the interim until someone likely comes up with a better solution or suggestion.
