MSI NF980-G65 with AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edtion 140 Watt

Do I need to update the bios before I install OS? I have tried 2 of these mobo's and both would shut down during XP installation. The ram I was using was G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666). The board would not restart unless I cleared cmos and that didn't always work. Needed multiple tries sometimes. When it did restart It would show "bad cmos checksum" If it's just a matter of flashing the new bios before I install the OS, then which bios should I use as there are 3 listed on MSI for that board? (1.0, 1.1 and 1.2) Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

What PSU you use? VGA? Read >>Posting Guide<<
Ensure that CPU heatsink is properly installed also:
•   Verify that CPU is not exceeding recommended temperature by checking the CPU temperature in the BIOS under PC Health status
•    Check CPU heatsink/fan is properly installed
     •    Verify that any cover over the thermal interface on the bottom of the CPU HSF is removed
     •    Verify that CPU HSF is recommended for your CPU
•    Check for CPU overclocking which may cause overheating
     •    Check CPU FSB clock
     •    Check CPU Vcore voltage
•    Check computer case for proper ventilation
Check BIOS temp reported in BIOS and check CPU operating voltage.

I purchased this CPU/Mobo bundle from NewEgg recently and am having a hard time getting anything to work.  Here are the components I am using:
    MSI NF750-G55 mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU
    2x4Gb GSkill F3-10666CL9D-8GBSR DDRIII ram
EVGA GeForce GTX550 Ti SLI ready graphics board
ZUMAX X3 Series ATX 650Watt power supply
NZXT M59 ATX Mid tower case
Now to the problem - no POST
I have double checked the CPU seating and installation and its correct, have tried both on board video as well as the GeForce, and no signal to the monitor.  The 4 blue ASP power led's do light up, and the CPU fan spins, but only for a few seconds.  Then it shuts off, then restarts, and keeps cycling like this.  Have tried with no memory installed, same issue.  I have seen several entries on forums for no POST on this mobo.  Can anyone help me here?  Am I looking at a bad mobo or what?  Currently have it out of the case on a non conductive surface.

  • Diagnosing No POST, No Beep MSI 790GX-G65 with AMD Phenom X4 955 BE

Last night I came home to a ceased PC with a frozen screen. PC has been working fine for over 2 years, but CPU has been running a bit hot of late (60C) with occasional BSODs with some ATI driver reference. Updated video drivers a few times. Suspected overheating CPU or ATI. Never overclocked it.
    Specifications:
    CPU: 3.2Ghz Quad-core AMD Phenom X4 955 Black Edition
    M/B: MSI 790GX-G65
BIOS: Don't know. I upgraded it at one point.
    Memory: 4x 2GB DDR3 Apacer (2GB UNB PC3-10600 CL9). Don't have more info right now.
    Video: On-board.
    Hard-drives: 1x 500GB Western Digital (Removed)
Peripheral Devices: PCI Wi-Fi card (Removed)
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
    PSU: ISO-500PP Switching PSU, Max Output 420W rated 23.0A @ 12V
    Symptoms:
Black screen with blinking monitor LED (connected via DVI).
All 5 blue M/B LEDs light up.
    No POST.
No Beeps (connected PC speaker to JFP2 according to maunal)
No peripheral activation, e.g. no keyboard lights / mouse.
All funs run (incl. PSU fan).
If USB keyboard is plugged in when powered, keyboard function LED lights up for a second, then dies.
    Suspected Causes:
    Broken CPU
Broken PSU. It is the only component I skimped on with this system (420W), but I was saving money and didn't have a video card DVD drive or anything fancy connected. Worked great until now.
    Things I have tried:
    Left it overnight.
Reseated CPU and heatsink (did not reapply thermal paste).
    Cleaned heatsink under CPU Fan.
Removed PSU and M/B from case.
    Disconnected everything.
Laid M/B on anti-static bag with only power supply and monitor via DVI cable.
Removed all RAM. Starting produces no beeps from PC speaker (via JFP2). Suspect broken CPU.
Some things I have not tried:
    A different PSU
    VGA output
Different AM2 CPU (don't have one)
    New thermal paste
Clearing CMOS and removing battery. Not sure how to do this (do I need to remove CMOS battery and hold clr CMOS button for 60s?)
Since everything on the M/B lights up (incl. blinking Wi-Fi LED when it was connected), I suspect a bricked CPU.
Where do I go from here?
    (edit: added keyboard LED symptom)

    @Fredrik:
Yes, I tried with 1 RAM DIMM in different positions. I connected a PC speaker and my standard speakers via the audio jack (some new M/Bs apparently output to it). I don't have access to another compatible system to try my CPU on. Very infrequent thunderstorms.
    @cronnin:
    1. Placed M/B on unpainted wooden table. Good point about the anti-static bag - I forgot that it conducts. No change in symptoms.
    2. Everything is disconnected. I've tried 1 stick of RAM in different slots and connected a CRT monitor via VGA. No video out.
    3. I connected an old PC speaker to pins 2 and 8 of JFP2 and plugged in normal speakers via green audio jack on M/B. I can't get it to produce any sound whatsoever.
    4. FSB overclock switches are both ON.
    5. I pressed and held CLR_CMOS for 10 seconds while ATX power was connected and system unpowered. Didn't touch the battery.
    More Things I Tried:
Used a multimeter to test my PSU ATX outputs on the board when powered on. I get a steady 12.35V, 5.2V and 3V at the M/B power connector. Starting to think the PSU is OK, but still can't be sure. If there was a lack of current, wouldn't the voltages start to break-down?

    Nothing works.

only 2/4 of the LEDs on the mobo light up.

What you are asking does not make any sense regarding Hybrid SLI. For Hybrid SLI you need a single GeForce 8400 or 8500 graphic card to boost 3D graphics performance with on board graphic card.
Are you actually wanting to do normal SLI with the two 9800GTX+ cards?
Edit: What's wrong with the instructions in your manual? If the paper manual you have is not adequate try the PDF one from >> here <<, maybe it shows more than the paper one you got with the MB. See SLI instructions starting at page 2-22.
any1 else want to take a shot at this who understands the difference between hybrid and geforce boost and is also aware that hybrid is not limited to 1 gpu + mGpu but can be used in dula and tri-sli configurations?

  • MSI NF980-G65 freezes when trying to boot from disc

I just recently purchased and received an MSI NF980-G65 motherboard to work with my AMD Phenom II x6 1055T, but sadly I have had nothing but trouble.
So far the motherboard posts its bios and has the ability to detect any (and all) of my hard drives when I have them plugged in. The hard drive that has Windows installed on it currently informs me that I need to put in my Windows disc and run the repair utility, which makes sense since I was using a completely different motherboard and CPU before.
It is when I try to press any key to boot from disc that the problem arises. When I press a key on my keyboard while that prompt is on screen, the cursor jumps as if I had hit the tab key and does nothing further.
I have a total of three copies of Windows 7 at my disposal to use, two are DVDs I had burned from using my student discount to get them, and one set (32-bit and 64-bit) were in a retail copy of home premium, all of the discs performed the same action. I had tried using different SATA cables, different power adapters, and even different DVD players to try and remedy the situation.
The hard drive with windows is an IDE hard drive, but I have tried my other SATA hard drives just to be sure, none of which fixed the problem.
I have heard briefly about m-flash, but as far as I can tell, it would appear this new motherboard did come with the latest bios version (1.4).

For the boot, I have tried both setting up the DVD player as the initial boot, and I have tried just selecting it in the boot menu.
As per the posting guide, here are more specific information:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X6 2.8 GHz, 9.0 MB Total Cache, AM3 Socket
Motherboard: MSI NF980-G65 v. 1.2 bios (I'm going to try and flash this to a later now, I didn't know where to look for it before) , 601-7612-010B1004183389
    RAM: G. Skill Ripjaw DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 2gb x 1 until I get this working, then it will be x4
Power Supply: Tagan BZ Series 700W
DVD: Samsung SH-S223 DVD burner with Lightscribe

  • MSI NF980-G65 Memory amount installed. "Poll"

I'd like to start a poll here to find out how much Ram & what Brand & sticker # you used, example "F3-12800CL9-2GBRL' or whatever. I do have the QVL sheet, but not all Ram is on it & I'm just curious. Did you install 4 or 8GB or more on this Mobo?  If you contribute your info here in this poll, It just may help other people who have this Mobo make a choice on what you think is the best ram for this Mobo for an Intel or AMD CPU.
Please don't tell me Gskill Ripjaws series Ram is not compatable with AMD CPU's. I have Gskill Ripjaw ram @ 1600Mhz installed & I'm using a Phenom X4 965 CPU,on the MSI NF980-G65 Mobo. The Gskill series Ram is not all specified for nothing but Intel CPU's. The Package for my Gskill Ram clearly states, "For use with AMD CPU's." So lets have poll here.
At first I installed 4GB of Gskill ripjaw Ram. only 2 sticks/ 2GB each. "F3-12800CL9D-2GBRL" They run Great @ 1600Mhz with a Bios ajustment. From what I've read on other Tech forums it's better to use only 2 memory slots then all 4 slots. Less stress on the CPU. Then I installed 8GB of Ram 2 sticks/ 4GB each. NICE!  Tell me & those who find this poll what you used if you wish. Thank you
Edit: Edited name of topic to the correct full name of MB. It is not 980-G65, it is NF980-G65.

Nothing I see asks about what runs better or performance results. This thread is over 8 months old. So let's cut to the chase & just advise everyone to stick with RAM tested on the mainboard in question with whatever brand & number of GB, & in compliance with the platform's native supported specifications. If wanting to use RAM that is rated above supported platform specifications & expect it to work trouble free without any tweaking, it doesn't always work out so well. Post in the OC Section of the forum if trying to run 'anything' above native supported spec.
The thread IMO, was ill conceived from the start. Why perpetuate it any longer? Most people disregard the actual facts & buy whatever is the flashiest & had the best advertising & marketing scheme.
Do people still really think a pretty heat spreader is saving their RAM from total destruction? Too funny!

  • MSI NF980-G65 CPU heatsink selection

Hey guys, I'm ordering my new cpu tomorrow, Phenom II x4 965 BE, the new 125w revision. My motherboard is the MSI NF980-G65.
I need to figure out which of the top end heatsinks will fit without interfering with my ram.
    G.Skill Trident.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231282&cm_re=gskill_trident-_-20-231-282-_-Product
Dual channel mode with 2 sticks utilizes the first two slots I think.
The ram measures 2 1/8" tall to the top of the heat spreader.
So far the cooler i'm most interested in is the Scythe Mugen 2 but the thing looks huge, from what I can tell folk with AMD boards have had success by mounting the fan so it's raised a bit, thus clearing the ram. I dont know if this would affect the cooling being that the fan's offset ?
I dont know how high the base of the fan sits by default, judging from the pictures it's not very high, so i'm guessing i'd have to offset it by at least 1".
I'd like to orient it to blow out through the back of the case as opposed to vertically into the psu.
The other option would be the Corsair H50, I have a modded side panel and I could mount the rad/fan to one of the 120mm holes. This option eliminates all the fitment issues, having said that i'm still not convinced the H50 is all it's cracked up to be, seems there are many mixed reviews.
I am open to other suggestions if you guys have any. With the right cooler, a couple of gin and tonic's and a lot of luck i'll be able to hit 4ghz, at least that's my goal
The case is a Cooler Master Praetorian with great air flow due to a couple of side, top and floor panel mods.
This is a brand new build and i'm hoping to have it all ready to go by the weekend so i'd like to get set on the right cooler by tomorrow, i'd hate to have to return it and delay the building !

I have the same board and am using a 945 95w version. I have the Thermalright 128-SE. It's a bit lower then others and just fits in my 4u rack case. I have a 120mm AC PWM fan on it which blows down. Right now i have min fan speed set down a notch or two and Hwmonitor is reporting fan at 75% and cpu cores at ~25c at idle. It keeps the cores at 40-45c under stress test. And yet even at full speed you can't hear the fan over drives and other sounds. A little bigger fan would easly hand a hotter cpu.  Just be sure to order the am2/3 brackets.
Also the upper part of the heat sink is offset a bit to the side with the small pipes. hang that over the ram and it will help keep them cool, though my G.Skill 1600 ripjaws don't seem to need any help staying cool

  • MSI NF980-G65 - How to disable on-board video? (EVGA says to do this?) GTX260

    I need your help.
Just upgraded my system to use MSI's NF980-G65 SLI board. I only have 1 EVGA GTX260 card right now and I purchased this board so I could add another GTX260 later this spring. The GTX260 worked on my last ASUS board just fine but the NF980-G65 doesn't see it.. at least I think it doesn't see it.  I can boot off the mother board video fine, Windows 7 x64 boots up fine but doesn't see my gtx card in the device list it does report vid as (nforce 980 sli) or something like that. When I power off and plug my monitor into my GTX260, the video does not work (the system continues to boot and I can hear the windows7 start up music), I've tried both video terminals on the card but nothing. EVGA says if my mother board has on-board video that I'll need to disable it and the card will work (I did not have to do this on my last board though, but that board was not an SLI board either). BUT when I go into the bios there is no option to turn off the on-board video? Is this right? Does anyone know how to do this or am I missing something? I've done allot of research on line and there were a few post saying that even with only one card installed that I will only use the mother board video plug only... is this right? Is windows not suppose to report my video card as being a GTX260 but as a 980 SLI? Sorry I'm new to this SLI stuff.
         MSI NF980-G65 w/6G DDR3 Patriot
EVGA GTX260 (installed in first PCI-E x16 slot 'labeled as PCI-E2'), yes both power plugs are plugged in.
         AMD Athlon II X4
         650W PSU
         Windows 7 x64 Home Premium
The system seems to work fine with the on-board video. I used the MSI auto updater to make sure all drivers and the bios are up to date and nothing reported back as needing updating, all though when I searched MSI's site manually there is a newer bios available but haven't dared install it yet.
Is there anyone out there that runs this board with only 1 GTX card? Does your system see it? Help!
    THX!
    MX

Thanks for your help guys. Still no go.
In the "Chipset Feature" there is no disable on board VGA listed. It list these items only.
    HPET [Disabled]
    Hybrid SLI Support [Disabled]
    VGA Share Memory Auto [Auto]
    VGA Share Memory [64M]
I've tried disabling the VGA Share memory, but on boot the mother board gives me a set of 5 or so beeps and then no video works. I have to reset the CMOS after that, so I can see the bios setup screen again.
The above settings is how the board came stock and it's how it returns after I do a reset. I'm starting to wonder if the PCI-E slots are not functioning or my GTX260 got fried moving from one mother board to another (I'm always strapped to ground when I work on electronics). I'll go through the motions tonight to put my asus board back in and test my GTX card. If it works after the swap and you guys have no other suggestions I'll send the board back to MSI for repair.  If the board is bad then this will be my last MSI board, over the last 5 years I've gone through 3 MSI mother boards. MSI always has the features I want but I just don't have the luck with them. My last board (ASUS) doesn't support SLI or I'd still be using it... maybe it's time to go ATI and the crossfire route... I hope not, I'm a real big Nvidia fan.
Anyhow, if you guys have any other suggestions I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks again. - MX

  • MSI NF980-G65 not booting HELP!

    Hi there,
First of all, here are my specs:
    Phenom II 955
    MSI NF980 - g65
    4GB ddr3 Crucial Tracer
    PNY GTX 285
    Tuniq 1200W PSU
    500GB WD HD
So lately my computer has been having some issues, Blue screening, Not booting past the MSI MB logo, taking ages to enter BIOS etc..
Now it wont boot at all, not even into Bios.
I dont know whats wrong and i dont have access to another MB or CPU.
Ive tried a different HD and also even taking the GPU out and running from the integrated VGA.
Ive run the system with each 2GB stick each with no difference and yes ive checked the Power connecters etc and a different PSU too.
    Any ideas?
MB? CPU? i think its one of the two?
Any help would be much appreicated!
