I am afraid that is the full potential according to AMD for this nice CPU. What you intend to do is to unlock cores that were deliberately locked by AMD to ensure that you have the stable use of this nice CPU.
The potential instabilities that may result, far outnumber the probabilities that it will actually be successful. Count yourself very lucky if you do have success, otherwise be happy that you got a working Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition that you paid for.

I purchased this CPU/Mobo bundle from NewEgg recently and am having a hard time getting anything to work.  Here are the components I am using:
    MSI NF750-G55 mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU
    2x4Gb GSkill F3-10666CL9D-8GBSR DDRIII ram
EVGA GeForce GTX550 Ti SLI ready graphics board
ZUMAX X3 Series ATX 650Watt power supply
NZXT M59 ATX Mid tower case
Now to the problem - no POST
I have double checked the CPU seating and installation and its correct, have tried both on board video as well as the GeForce, and no signal to the monitor.  The 4 blue ASP power led's do light up, and the CPU fan spins, but only for a few seconds.  Then it shuts off, then restarts, and keeps cycling like this.  Have tried with no memory installed, same issue.  I have seen several entries on forums for no POST on this mobo.  Can anyone help me here?  Am I looking at a bad mobo or what?  Currently have it out of the case on a non conductive surface.

I am thinking about ordering a http://www.msi.com/product/mb/880GM-E41.html and a AMD phenom II 840(HDX840WFGMBOX) but the 880GM-E41 does not list it under supported cpus but since the 840 a propus die would it work ? will msi release a bios update for proper ID

I have the same CPU in my 890FX-GD70 board, and it works fine and is recognised correctly, despite also not being on the supported list for my board. Should also work in yours too.

  • Diagnosing No POST, No Beep MSI 790GX-G65 with AMD Phenom X4 955 BE

Last night I came home to a ceased PC with a frozen screen. PC has been working fine for over 2 years, but CPU has been running a bit hot of late (60C) with occasional BSODs with some ATI driver reference. Updated video drivers a few times. Suspected overheating CPU or ATI. Never overclocked it.
    Specifications:
    CPU: 3.2Ghz Quad-core AMD Phenom X4 955 Black Edition
    M/B: MSI 790GX-G65
BIOS: Don't know. I upgraded it at one point.
    Memory: 4x 2GB DDR3 Apacer (2GB UNB PC3-10600 CL9). Don't have more info right now.
    Video: On-board.
    Hard-drives: 1x 500GB Western Digital (Removed)
Peripheral Devices: PCI Wi-Fi card (Removed)
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
    PSU: ISO-500PP Switching PSU, Max Output 420W rated 23.0A @ 12V
    Symptoms:
Black screen with blinking monitor LED (connected via DVI).
All 5 blue M/B LEDs light up.
    No POST.
No Beeps (connected PC speaker to JFP2 according to maunal)
No peripheral activation, e.g. no keyboard lights / mouse.
All funs run (incl. PSU fan).
If USB keyboard is plugged in when powered, keyboard function LED lights up for a second, then dies.
    Suspected Causes:
    Broken CPU
Broken PSU. It is the only component I skimped on with this system (420W), but I was saving money and didn't have a video card DVD drive or anything fancy connected. Worked great until now.
    Things I have tried:
    Left it overnight.
Reseated CPU and heatsink (did not reapply thermal paste).
    Cleaned heatsink under CPU Fan.
Removed PSU and M/B from case.
    Disconnected everything.
Laid M/B on anti-static bag with only power supply and monitor via DVI cable.
Removed all RAM. Starting produces no beeps from PC speaker (via JFP2). Suspect broken CPU.
Some things I have not tried:
    A different PSU
    VGA output
Different AM2 CPU (don't have one)
    New thermal paste
Clearing CMOS and removing battery. Not sure how to do this (do I need to remove CMOS battery and hold clr CMOS button for 60s?)
Since everything on the M/B lights up (incl. blinking Wi-Fi LED when it was connected), I suspect a bricked CPU.
Where do I go from here?
    (edit: added keyboard LED symptom)

    @Fredrik:
Yes, I tried with 1 RAM DIMM in different positions. I connected a PC speaker and my standard speakers via the audio jack (some new M/Bs apparently output to it). I don't have access to another compatible system to try my CPU on. Very infrequent thunderstorms.
    @cronnin:
    1. Placed M/B on unpainted wooden table. Good point about the anti-static bag - I forgot that it conducts. No change in symptoms.
    2. Everything is disconnected. I've tried 1 stick of RAM in different slots and connected a CRT monitor via VGA. No video out.
    3. I connected an old PC speaker to pins 2 and 8 of JFP2 and plugged in normal speakers via green audio jack on M/B. I can't get it to produce any sound whatsoever.
    4. FSB overclock switches are both ON.
    5. I pressed and held CLR_CMOS for 10 seconds while ATX power was connected and system unpowered. Didn't touch the battery.
    More Things I Tried:
Used a multimeter to test my PSU ATX outputs on the board when powered on. I get a steady 12.35V, 5.2V and 3V at the M/B power connector. Starting to think the PSU is OK, but still can't be sure. If there was a lack of current, wouldn't the voltages start to break-down?

  • MSI K9N2 Diamond w/ AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE Overheating

    Motherboard Version = 1.1
BIOS = ? (Just purchased, but have an RMA on the processor for the issue listed below, so I'm not sure of the version)
I purchased the MSI K9N2 Diamond and an AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE. According to the CPU support page, this processor does work with the board. Also, MSI Tech Support said:
    Quote
Yes, this board could support Phenom II X4 955.
    and
    Quote
We have verified this CPU for this board on our lab with no problem
As far as I can tell, the processor works with the board because it does boot and recognizes it. However, it overheats extremely fast. The processor temps exceed 62C (Max Recommended CPU Temp) in under 30 seconds. I reseated the cooler several times with various thermal pastes so I'm sure that is not the issue. I was wondering if anyone knew of an existing problem between this processor or board, or if it was probably just a defective core.

Quote from: Hans on 03-July-09, 01:42:40
Try your setup outside of pc case on a piece of non-conducting material to see if temp will drop.
I'll try this tomorrow when the new CPU arrives if the issue persists.
Quote from: Hans on 03-July-09, 01:42:40
Just to be 100% sure -- do check that the fan is placed correctly onto the heatsink. the air should be blown into the heatsink, not be sucked through. (Hollow side of the fans down).
Fan is indeed situated to suck air through the cooler.
Quote from: Hans on 03-July-09, 01:42:40
    Check the heatsink is clean.
Yeah it was pristine, brand new.
Quote from: Hans on 03-July-09, 01:42:40
And then this: does the heatsink feel hot when the system overheats? Or warm to the touch?
Yes, it was very warm to the touch. Almost too hot to want to keep my finger there, actually did cause a layer of flesh to disappear from repeatedly testing it in this manner >.< (to see if the heatsink was warm each time, that is).

  • Freezing issues with MSI 970A-G43 and AMD FX 8320

    Hey all,
I bought my brother a new system a few days ago, but he has had serious issues with the machine crashing ever since.
The machine has had a fresh installation of Windows 7, it has all the latest drivers for both motherboard, sound, chipset and video card (Latest VGA driver tested as well as the latest Beta version)
I thought the problem might be with the VGA card, as the computer would just shut off during 3d Gaming, but it also seems to happen when surfing the internet or doing normal "2d" activities
What happens is the computer will just seemingly shut off, the LED lights on the front of the case, around the dials, start blinking and the only way to get it back up again, is to turn if off at the power supply unit and then turn it back on again.
I'll paste in what my brother sent me (As I live in the UK and can't see the machine crashing myself), he said:
I dunno what the issue is but, last night the comp just shut off in middle of game play on 3 different games, and the lights were flashing, I had to turn complete power off to the power box and back on to restart comp, I kept checking all my temps with speccy and speed fan and nothing seemed high at all, also when it shuts off and I re start it, a lot of my desktop icons move around to different spots,
Update: crashed a few times on me, once playing euro, once just browsing Internet 5 min after the first one, changed out ram just for shots and giggles and ran euro on ultra for about 5 min and crashed. I dl a gpu monitor gadget, was accurate on temp but said the gpu was 0% but with just Internet would randomly jump to 99% or 40% then back to 0 and would stay and eventually crash
    Spec is:
    AMD FX-8320 3.5GHZ EIGHT CORE
    500GB SATA III 6GB/S 7200RPM 16MB
    COOLERMASTER SEIDON 120M WATER COOLER
    4Gb DDR3 / 1600 MHZ MEMORY
    MSI 970A-G43 AMD 970 CROSSFIRE AM3+ DDR3 USB 3.0 SATA
    CORSAIR 500 WATTS CX500 V2 80 PLUS POWER SUPPLY
ASUS XONAR DG 5.1 CHANNELS PCI XONAR DG SOUND CARD
    AMD RADEON 7750 2GB PCI-E
There was a concern I did have when I did search earlier, via a thread on Tomshardware in which a similiar board had issues with the FX8350's wattage going above the stated 125 watts and causing the board to freeze.
It's a different board/chip, but I wonder if the wattage of the CPU goes above 125W and causes problems on the board? Hmm
I feel really guilty right now, because I bought this for him as a present, it was $700ish plus shipping etc and it's been nothing but problems ever since.
I'm going to see what version of Bios he's running when he gets out of bed, but the Live Update software said there were no updates, but I'll have him check manually.
Another issue I noted, was I sent him some ram before the PC arrived, which was:
    XMS3 — 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1333C9)
He originally put that ram in with the existing 4gb of ram, so I thought it "Might" be a conflict, due to them having a different Mhz value
So I had him remove the 4gb stick that came with the PC
As soon as he entered the bios, it froze and did so twice
So he removed that ram and put back the original 4gb stick and the bios worked
No idea if the two are related.

I hope this doesn't count as necro-ing a thread (last post was in October), but it's the one closest to my situation.
    I have the following setup:
    MSI 970a-g43 motherboard
    AMD FX-6300 cpu
ATI Radeon HD 4550 graphics card
    4x 2GB RAM sticks
    2x 500 GB 3.5" SATA hard drives
    CoolMax 700W psu
    16x r/rw DVD burner
cheapo SD and others card reader that fits in the floppy drive bay
Older PC tower that has a temperature sensor built into it
I built it around November 15th, and it worked until a couple days ago (December 12th I think), when it started doing the sudden shut-off thing. Same as Adresch described: shuts off, tower light blinks, have to flip the i/o switch off and back on to boot again. I consulted a friend for some suggestions, and he said I should put a water cooler in there, because the stock heatsink that comes with most processors are junk. So I went out and bought a Corsair H55 water cooler and installed that.
The computer seemed to run for a bit longer before shutting off. I loaded up the BIOS software, SpeedFan, and HWMonitor. SF said the CPU was running average of 48*C, and GPU was averaging 51*C. The CPU's highest was at 61*C and its lowest was 36*C. BIOS software said CPU was at 35*C the whole time. HWMonitor listed the GPU at 51*C, and the CPU at 7*C. These are all very inconsistent with each other as far as I can tell, so I don't know what to make of these readings. Didn't seem to much matter as the computer continued shutting off.
My options then being replacing the PSU or the motherboard, I decided to replace the power supply, since I was just within the 30 days. Switched for a ThermalTake TR2 700W. Before installing it, I pulled the tower's CPU temperature sensor wire from between the water cooler heatsink and the CPU, just in case. Then I installed the PSU, checked and rechecked all of the connections, and turned it on.
    Nothing.
I then spent the next two hours rechecking everything, even unplugging everything and putting it back together. Still nothing. The best I could get was a flicker of the tower light and the fans doing a quarter turn before ceasing movement. The red LED on the front of the SD card reader stayed on the entire time, though, so I guess it was getting at least a trickle of power. I also removed everything but the PSU, motherboard, CPU, and one stick of RAM. Still no power. I think the new PSU may have been open box, so I'm returning it today for a different one, and even bumping it up to 850W.
I'm not sure that will solve my original issue though, so I'll be looking for a heatsink to put on the VRMS as mentioned. Just thought I'd get this down in a relevant thread in case anyone had other thoughts on what could be going on.

  • MSI KT4 ultra and AMD ATHLON 2600+ and Corsair 512Mb 3200

    Hello,
    i've bought a: MSI KT4 ULTRA and a AMD ATHLON 2600+
Today, i've updated the bios to the version 1.3! So: no problem to reboot after the process complete.
BUT, now i can't set the CPU at 2.16Ghz (280Mhz clock) because if i set the clock up to 100Mhz it doesn't reboot anymore! the motherboard detect the frequency @ 1250 Mhz :(((
    Please: HELP ME
(sorry for the grammar and / the english) but i'm a french guy.

    Hi,
I had the same issues, see the thread:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/viewindex.php?threadid=11717&boardid=13&styleid=1
Essentially I had to set (in the BIOS) the FSB to 166 and left the Multiplier on auto.  This ment the processor was reported properly as 2600+, but the memory will only run at 333 MHz...  Yeah I think I wasted the money on getting the latest and greatest memory too....
Had me worried for a while, I though my supplier had palmed a bad chip off on me....  It just that the board can't do the highest speed chips and the highest speed memory at the same time (it states that that is unsupported in the manual...)
    hope the helps...

  • MSI 745 Ultra and AMD XP 2000+

    Hello everyone,
    I've got a problem, i've got a MSI Ultra 745 (MS-6561)
mainbord and a AMD XP 2000+ Processor.
When i am in windows, fuzzy logic reports to me that
    my cpu is 1666 Mhz..
When i start my bios says that it is an xp 2000+ so that's fine..
And in my bios settings i can change my FSB and my Ratio..
In windows it wil say ratio 12,5 and fsb 133..
How can i change the ratio to 15?
In my bios i can change it to 15 but NOT with program's like fuzzy logic (only the FSB)
    Geetz, arjan

AMD labels their processors by their performance comparison to Intel processors.  So an Athlon XP 2000+ will perform just as well, or better, than a P4 at 2GHz at about 9 out of 10 applications.  The actual clock speed is lower than what the processor is listed as.
You can't change the multiplier factor unless you hack your CPU (quite literally, by connecting some of the L3 bridges with some low resistance thermal silver laquer, this is a difficult and dangerous process).
You can increase the FSB, but if you go above 145 you have serious risk of stability issues.  This will not only effect your CPU, but all of the components of your PC.  I have mine at 140.  Generally you aren't supposed to overclock anything more than 10%
Also, the 745 Ultra does not have a fan for it's motherboard interface controller chip (this would be called the Northbridge, but there's no SouthBridge connected to it).  It just has that copper heatsink that says MSI DDR.  I put my own 40mm fan on it to make sure the chip doesn't overheat.  If you are OCing your FSB, you may want to consider this.

  • MSI K8N SLI and AMD FX-60

Can someone please tell me if the AMD FX-60 CPU is compatible with the
    MSI K8N SLI (MS-7185) version 1.0 motherboard?
If I upgraded to this processor would its performance be limited by
the speed of my memory. I have 2.5 Gb PC3200 Corsair RAM.
    Many thanks!

    Quote
Yes I'm sure its back at 200MHz ie PC3200 but I don't know why the numbers are low. What else would you recommend that I use for benchmarking memory?
From the below statement I thought you meant you tried to run all 4 memory sticks at 200Mhz, I guess I misunderstood?
    Quote
However, I tried it with all four sticks and it also works in dual mode but only in 2T command rate. Although it went into 167 MHz memory frequency but I changed it to 200MHz to get PC3200 (400MHz).
Obviously from the sceenshot you have 2GB and 2 sticks and are at 1T, but what about 3GB.  I thought you meant running all 4 sticks at 200Mhz from what you said.  That is why I said the score is low.  Sandra is pretty linear when it comes to the bandwidth test.  If memory speed goes down from 200 to 167 that's about 17% reduction, add in 1-3% for 2T in Sandra, and you get very close to your 18% reduction in bandwidth for 3GB test.  Since it sounded like you said you adjusted 3GB to 200Mhz then the score would be too low for the 3GB run, as it appears it is still 166 at 2T.  If that's the case the score is pretty much right on the money.
BK's recommendations are good for other benchmarks, make sure to try real world apps though too.
Before you get into overclocking read some of the overclocking guide(like down in the overclocking modding section on the forum)

  • MSI KT4 Ultra and AMD XP3200+

    Hi,
Is it possible to run an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ on the MSI KT4 Ultra Motherboard?
I know the motherboard supports FSB200/266/333, but will the cpu work if I manually set it to FSB400 in the bios?
    Thanks for you help.

I don't think the cpu is unlocked, it is an original 3200+.
I thought you need an unlocked cpu if you want to overclock the cpu.
I just want to leave the multiplier on auto and set the frequency to 200MHz (its original setting).
The reason I need to know is that I stupidly bought the cpu without checking my motherboard FSB support and I cant return the cpu.
I have not received it yet and wanted to know if it was possible to get my computer up and running even if the KT4 Ultra does not officially support FSB400.
Would there be any harm in trying the cpu in my motherboard.
If anyone has managed to run an AMD XP3200+ cpu on a MSI KT4 Ultra, please let me know.
    Thank You.

make sure these are set as such in BIOS
    go to Settings\Advanced\Power Management Setup
    EUP2013 = Disabled
    go to Overclocking\CPU Features
AMD Cool and Quiet = Disabled
    C1E = Disabled
if you do not mind your computers CPU running hotter all the time Enable HPC Mode (High Power Computing Mode) as that will auto max out the clocks it uses and will not let them drop below Base clock speed (4GHz for the FX8350)!
All of this is done, and it freezes on win 7 splash art loading screen, and never moves. That is with the HPC enabled. I do have High performance set as my power mode inside of win7 as well.

  • Just got the MSI 785g-E53 and AMD 1055 = no boot

    Hi
As the topic reveals, i have a big problem.
Just got a new motherboard from MSI and an AMD cpu and installed it into my case with all the other hardware.
When i was going to start it, the fans and the dvd-rom startet, but no picture on my screen. and after a few secondt the cpu fan went from silent mode to MAX SPEED! whats going on? I tried to fire it up without pci cards, harddisks and dvd-rom, but still no picture and the fan want to fly away after a few seconds. Then i took out the GPU, since the 785g-e53 has integratet graphics, but still the same symptoms.
Any ideas what i can do? My gues is that the MB's BIOS version does not suport the AMD 1055..  if thats the problem, can i flash without the cpu?
    Thanks for any help.
    Sleepy.

it was a cpu problem.    Motherboard came with bios version 3.0 so i had to buy a sepron 140 just to flash it to 3.8 so the 1055 could work. and now its fine!
Now i just need to find out what kind of gaphic card i sould get. since the MB has integrated graphics i can use crossfire, but dont know what is compatiple with the MB.
    Recomendations would be appreciated.
