MSI P31 Neo and FSB/DDR ratio

I purchased P31 Neo -mb and E2160 processor.
I've red that this processor could easily hit 3.0 Ghz with 333 mhz fsb. The problem is that I can't find a setting from P31 Neo's bios that would allow to unlock FSB/DDR ratio. There is only Auto, 1:1.66 and 1:2 setting for FSB/DDR ratio. When I raise the FSB the DDR speed quickly raises over 800 Mhz and the system doesn't post. 2160 Mhz is the top that i've managed to overclock E2160 because my DDR2-chips can't handle the higher FSB speeds.
Can I do something about this or should I swap P31 Neo to some P35-chipset mobo that would allow more flexible FSB/DDR ratio settings?

Hello Aacko,
the P31 Neo is a budget board that is not really designed for overclocking (notice the red PCB).  The P31 chipset supports DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 memory modules.  With a FSB-200-MHZ-CPU installed, 1:1.66 and 1:2 are exactly the ratios you need to get your RAM to 667 MHz or 800 MHz.

If you really want to overclock, you should go for a P35 Platinum or P35 Neo2-FR/FIR board.

    Hi!
I'm TyrrelCorp, and i'm from Portugal.
First of all... i apologise for my english... it's a little bit "rusty".
    So... the problem:
I've a MSI P31 NEO mainboard. Until now it gave no problems, but when i upgrated from 2GB memory to 4GB... it doesn't load Windows.
    I've 4x1GB, 667MHz sticks.

I've already trieded with two sticks only, 2GB... and it starts fine. All the memory sticks work fine... in pair. All four, nothing.

"I've noticed that two of the memory sticks are single sided and the other two are dual sided! Could this be the origin for the problem?"
It seems you are using 2 high density sticks and 2 low density sticks. tRFC would certainly be different between the 2. Don't mix memory like that as you will have problems. To avoid memory problems like that ensure that all 4 are the same. Best would be 2x4 GB kit. At the very least get another kit the same as the 2 new ones and don't use the old ones.
Well... i thought memory sticks would have to be same capacity (this case, 1Gb) and same velocity, 667MHZ.
Never thought about SS or DS.
In this case... the older ones, OEM, are DS... the new ones, Kingstone, are SS... witch are better to keep and to buy new ones?

  • Setting FSB:DDR ratio?

How does one go about setting the FSB:DDR ratio on the Neo-2 (865)?
I'm trying to overclock my P4 2.4C (with HyperX PC3500 RAM), but I'm not able to get any higher than about 2.7 GHz because the DDR frequency gets too high, even if I lock it at 400 MHz in the BIOS.
Is there a setting I'm missing?  Does the board automatically set the ratio if the system bus is set high enough?
    Help would be appreciated, thanks.

You don't really 'lock' it to 400. You set it to 400 which puts it in 1:1 synch with the FSB at 200. I think what you want to do is set the DRAM clock at 333, so as it steps up with the FSB it won't reach 400 until your CPU is at a higher speed.
If you get this working, please report your current benchmark and your new benchmark when not running 1:1. I'm cursios to see the net effect of increasing your CPU speed while sacrificing memory speed.

  • MSI P31 Neo-F V2 - Fails to Boot

I've got an MSI P31 Neo-F V2 motherboard that I've had for about about 16 months now. Unfortunately today it's just started failing to boot correctly.
I turned the machine on and was greeted with a red error message just after the usb controller was initalized. The message said "Warning !!! The previous performance of overclocking is failed and the system is restored to the default settings. Press any key except "DEL" to enter SETUP......."
I haven't overclocked the machine (don't know how) so I'm not quite sure why that error message was coming up. Anyway, I pressed space, that prompted me to restore settings which I did, then took me to setup where I saved and exited. Then tried to restart the machine. From this point on (about 30 restarts) I've had that message twice. Normally it does one of the following:
    a) Powers up, no bleeps, no video output. Sits there waiting.
    b) Powers up for a few seconds, then powers straight back down. Waits about 10 seconds, then repeats. Eventually after enough retries it will reach the some point as (a).
I've tried disconnecting power, I've tried taking the CMOS battery out. The last time I got to the error message my USB keyboard wouldn't even work so I couldn't do anything but restart. If anyone has any suggestions on what to do then fire away, as I'm really stuck now
I don't know what version of the BIOS I'm running as I can't get that far anymore. Apart from the CPU which I'm not sure is important? (Intel Duo 3Ghz) I'm not sure on much more info on my system.
    Thanks.
    Ian

Ok, I've managed to find an old photo of the Bios.
Bios: A7392IMS V2.1 080608 is the number top left.
    CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz
    Gfx : 512Mb NiVidia GeForce 9800GTX+
Mem:  2 X 2GB DDR 2 800 MHz (will try and find out brand).
H/D : 2 * 160Gb drives. One is Seagate, the other Western Digital, both SATA 2.
OS : XP not that it's really relevant...
PSU : 800W. Don't know brand and DC current output. Will try to get these.

  • Cant boot MSI P31 Neo v2

Hi. First of all sorry for my bad english.
So I have this PC for 1,5 years now, never had this problem before.
One day I start my pc and it shows "Warning!!! The previous performance of overclocking is failed and the system restored to the default settings...." Press del to enter setup.
So I press del and enter setup, then i use fail safe deafaults settings and exit bios. Pc starts normaly. Next time I turn it off same message came up, so i did the same fails safe deafaults, but no effect, it just restarted and again same message. So i decided to try optimized deafaults and pc started. And again next time i turned it un same message, i tried fail safe deafaults, then optimized and no effect. After about 10 times trying those setting pc started, so i googled the problem and the suggestion was to flush cmos by removing batteri. So i did. After that pc isnt starting at all, just nothing on screen, no signal. No error beeps or something like that. All coolers, cd room ect is powered, just no signal on monitor. Checked the monitor with another pc, runs normaly.
    So the system specs-
    Intel core E7300 2.66ghz
    Msi p31 neo-f v2
    A-data 1gb ddr2
A-data 1gb ddr2 (tried with one ddr only, nothing)
    samsung f1 750gb sata2 7200rpm
    Giga byte 512mb gddr3 pcie16 hd4850
    Fortron psu atx 400w
    bios - A7392IMS200
I have checked all the wire contacts, ddr slots, vga slot, removed and inserted back CPU too, no help.
    Any ideas?

I would check the CPU/Ram. this system was overclocked?

  • Problems with MSI P31 Neo mobo

    Hello all,
I just received my new MSI P31 Neo motherboard today and have spent nearly the whole day trying to get it to work.
My problem is that when you turn the system on about 4/5 times there is no graphics displayed what so ever. When the graphics do come on and you can go through the BIOS it quite often jams. If occasionally you do get past that, when the Windows XP disc starts to load the files for the installer, it Jams and you need to restart, restarting this long process.
My CPU is supposed to be supported, it's a 3.6ghz Intel Pentium 4 chip. I am using 4 x Samsung Original 1024MB DDR2 PC5300 RAM though it only shows 2gb of it in the BIOS. The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 512MB PCI-E.
Can anyone tell me how to get this mobo to work? Things to try? Otherwise I think I will just have to send it back...

  • MSI P43 Neo series FSB wall?

After messing about quite a bit with this board with various CPU's and Memory, reading comments by other users and OC'ers on other boards, it seems I've come to the bottom of the problem with my Memory / CPU issue's on my board.
First once again: the used hardware
    Board:MSI 7519 V1.0 P43 Neo-F mainboard
    CPU: Intel E6550 / E6600
Cooler: Scythe Mine rev. B, stock fan (100mm @ 1500rpm)
    Memory: 2GB kit G.E.I.L. DDR2 800 cl5 "black dragon"
                4GB Corsair XMS2 pc8500 "dominator"
                2 x 1GB OCZ pc9200 900mhz "Special OPS" (not a kit)
                2x 512mb Hynix 667mhz cl4 OEM memory (not a kit)
Graphics card: MSI X1550, MSI 9600GT 512 OC
PSU: LC power 650W ATX 2.02 PSU / Raptox 550W ATX 2.01 PSU
OS: Windows Vista SP1 x64 UK
I've tried BIOS 1.3 and 1.6 (final versions only)
Memory shows to be in "asymetric dual channel mode" in every piece of software you trow at it. However, preformance is good.
Both Jumpers have been removed from the board, setting it to "333-400 mhz mode".
CE1, Spread spectrum, Speedstep and "OC boost modes" are disabled.
Memory is on auto (which results in 5-5-5-15) at 2.1V
MCP voltage is on 1.100 (since I don't want it to go over for no reason)
CPU core is at 1.375V in bios, resulting in 1.356~1.378V in CPUZ and Coretemp. (varies with every boot)
I've tried with both my E6550 and a borrowed E6600, but for some reason, the board will not pass it's POST at any FSB higher than 415mhz.
    (resulting in 830mhz DDR2, and a 2904mhz for the E6550 and 3733mhz for the E6600 (at 1.388V))
This all makes me wish I got the older E6600 instead, eventhough it gets quite hot. Which brings me to the topic of temps: E6550 OC after 1 hour Orthos = 54degrees. (and 33 / 39 idle) For some reason, Windows prefers core2, which Idle's a lot higher (39) than core1.(33)
The E6600 got to the awefully high temperature of 68 degrees after 2 hours Orthos.
But now the issue: As soon as I pop the FSB to 416, 417 or 420, the system will no longer boot, and I will get the "OC failed" message after shutting the power down.
I've read quite a few reviews and many people seem to encouter these problems. Boards with same chipsets, seem to go to quite a bit higher. (435 being the worst one in the same price range: the Gigabyte DS3 P43 version.)
Am I overlooking something? Would more voltage sort these problems? (I already went a bit overboard just to test)
    Are there settings I'm missing?
Any help would be greatly appriciated!!!

Hi Unicron, read ur post and thought id give you some feedback.Im the guy who originally posted the 417fsb wall thread.I beleve these boards with the p43 chipset Do indeed have something going on which limits  the higher fsb speeds seen by p45 series. Id be interested to hear if Any one with a p43 version msi board has achieved speeds beyond 415-417. I know the p45 chipsets have gotten thru the 500fsb barrier.I had tried Every bios available for my p43 neo3-f board and EVERY possible bios setting and yet never got beyond that 417 limitation. Voltages raised in cell menu have No effect on getting thru it. board is strong and stable Up to that point, then 1 mhz beyond there is no post or freezing as it enters desktop.Ultimately after spending 3 weeks intensive trying everything and scouring every forum and msi tech for advice, to no avail, i just gave up on it and returned my board to manufacturer. I purchased another brand of board and went right thru that fsb wall with same hardware and cpu.i was able to achieve 535fsb no problem. I had tried to post "which" board i went with before on this forum but was  censored heavily for trying to do so. I guess such sharing is Not allowed. Moderators take that as promoting "other" manufacturers boards and frown on it.My intent was only to share what i learned and help others. So i have to keep that info to myself sadly.. anyway thats my 2 cents, my name is Paul. good luck !
Yes, I think we discovered the same thing:
The MSI P43 Neo boards don't go over 414, 415 or 417mhz FSB.
Nor do various other brands. I must say I haven't found/read about a P43 board that does. But I guess if you claim there 's such a board, it must exist.
I'm done looking. Next time I'll buy a higher end board. Low end CPU + Low end board OC isn't a very good idea. I should've gone with a X48 MSI DDR2 board + E9650.

  • MSI K9N2G-Neo and Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition - BIOS Options Problem

    Hello, i have this MSI K9N2G-Neo + Athlon X2 7850 BE (REVEEN RCCT 0901SP + Tuniq TX2) + 4 x 2048MB OCZ Platinum 1066MHz, 700 watt real power supply, etc...
The problem is the bios v1.2 and new v1.3 that appears Disabled the CPU Voltage option for this cpu, in gray color or default values and i can´t change it. Now the cpu is running well at 3.2 ghz OC (200x16) some stable but not at all, i think it is a weak OC for a Black Edition CPU. Before i was using the X2 7750 BE and was the same problem with the CPU Voltages Bios´s options too.
Why in the bios isn´t enabled the CPU Voltage option ?
And why this Athlon Kuma don´t appear in the CPU SUPPORT LIST ??
This mother says that support CPUs up to 140watts and AM3... is it sure or it is a lie ?
This bios v1.3 is a few days new, Now i have to wait another 5 moths for a new one ??
    Thanks a lot.

Hi Svet... i did what u said me with numpad and nothing happended cause the cpu option is disabled. I think there is some kind of incompatibility between this mother and Kumas Core CPU... whit the 7750BE was the some issue too.

  • Problem with MSI 865P Neo and G4 Winfast

    Hi all,
I bought the mainboard MSI 865P Neo. Have put it into G4 Winfast A280 LE TDH my vivo. And the problem appeared.
When I doing whatever in Win (for example open explorer, mouse rightclick ...) the screen is simply runing over.
Seems like a video card doesn`t handle it or Screen (monitor) is poor but it`s not. The same problem appears also while Windows is installed.
Little note I want to add is my G4 has new Bios setup and on my second card Leadtek G2 MX everything`s ok. It seems for conflict between the mainboard and my v-card. Have you met similar problem ?
Would be grateful for an answer
    Best regards

On my old mainboard - ABIT ST6R (with G4) everything was ok. I changed mainboard, RAM and P4 and problem has appeared.
MSI supports AGP 8x/4x at 0.8V (AGP 3.0) or 4x at 1.5V (3.3V not supported)
If G4 needs 3.3V (I can't find G4 how much needs) that problem is obvious. I must change mainboard.
Anyone knows how much G4 poverage needs?

  • [SOLVED]MSI P31 Neo -mobo and strange network problems

I can't get network to work properly with this MSI-mobo's integrated lan chip.
When I boot from Arch install cd r8169-module is loaded and I can get ip via dhcp. Strange thing is that I can access http but not ftp. When I change transfermode to passive from links ftp works. But during Arch install setup I can't access the repos.
When I boot to Arch after install network doesn't work at all. Only thing I get is resolv-errors when I try to use wget or pacman. R8169 module is loaded at boot and Ifconfig shows that I have ip assigned to eth0.
I also tried with 3com's 3c509 network card that I had laying around and I have exactly same network problems with it as I have with r8169.
I am really going out of my mind with this. I have a laptop with via's network chip and I've never had any network problems with it and Arch. I haven't changed anything in my routers setup and I just tried and the networking on my laptop works just fine.
I also tried Ubuntu Hardy on this desktop machine and networking works ok. Ubuntu also loads the r8169 module as Arch does.

  • MSI K8T Neo and Mushkin 3200 Level II

I have read some of the posts about RAM and the K8T Neo, but I want some of your opinions on this. I have a 3200+ Athlon64 on the K8T and I am trying to use a 512MB DIMM of PC3200 Mushkin Level II in the board. The only other cards plugged into the board are the MSI D-Bracket (not the USB part, only the diagnostic part) and a Gainward Geforce 4 Ti4600. Usually I cannot even get the board to post with the Mushkin 3200 in the board. I have a stick of Muskin 2700 Level II and the board works fine with it using the Auto settings and I have even installed Windows XP using this memory. Whenever I try using the 3200, the D-Bracket freezes at the early chipset initilization. I have put the PC3200 stick in a Nforce2 board and the OS boots fine with no problems.
So is the problem the PC3200 or the board or both? Is the RAM not up to spec so it cannot handle the heftier requirements of the K8 but will work in the Nforce2 or can the board not handle/configure the better memory? Opinions?

Good question. I bought them from New Egg around the beginning of the year. They have black heatsinks on them so it is really hard to tell. 5 or 6, I can't tell and wouldn't want to try to take them off at this point.
My experience with them was that I was running the ram in the bios with the default settings and was unable to completely install WinXP without problems/errors. After making the one change from 2 to 3 in the timings (noted earlier), every thing installed fine.
After updating to the 1.20 bios, I had a heck of a time getting into the bios. I thought I had hosed it. Then I realized that the bios set my RAM back to the default settings. One change and everything was fine again. NOTE: I still have an issue with both JUSB connectors being used and a random stop/hang/lock-up in the bios, but that is another issue.
I have run both the Prime95 test for 9 hours with no errors and also memtest86+ with no problems either.
Either way, I hope this helps you and anyone else.
