MSI P35 Neo2-FR and E2180 Overclock

Has anyone had any luck with an overclock with the above kit?
I' ve managed to post at 266 FSB and x10 Multi.
After about 3 hours of gaming I got a blue screen however. Not sure if it was the temps or something else.
Anyone else with similar experience?

If you would really like some help you need to list your specs(see my sig for the info we need)
I ran a e2200 in a p35 neo-2-fr for awhile(basically the same chip except e2200 has a x11 multi) and had some pretty good success OCing it.However using anything over the x9 multi was very hard to get stable...Using x9 multi I was able to get a 24/7 stable OC @ 345x9(3105GHz) @ 1.3875v....x8 multi also gave me good success.
Keep in mind I use thermal electric water cooling and can get my coolant well below ambient temps so I never really run into a heat barrier until pushing the massive OCs.My load temps rarely pass 60c. Since you didnt list your temps I cannot say if thats your problem or not but I believe you can do much better.

  • MSI P35 Neo2-FR and GeForce 8800GT?

    Hello,
I am interested in buying MSI P35 Neo2-FR motherboard, and also the latest GeForce 8800GT. But after doing some research I notice that many people have having problems installing their 8800GT card into motherboards with a PCI-E 1.0a slots, and the Neo2-FR has 1.0a slots! However there seem to be exceptions, some motherboards with 1.0a slots work with 8800GT!
    This is all very confusing
Can anyone verify that MSI P35 Neo2-FR motherboard and GeForce 8800GT (With PCI-E 2.0!) works in the 1.0a slot??
    Thank you.

According to many sources, both personal and documentary, PCI-e 2.0 cards will work in PCI-e 1.X slots(Wikipedia is not exactly what I would consider a super source). Here's a more official source, PCI-SIG.

Q4: It sounds as if both speed grades are supported in the PCIe 2.0 specification?
A4: The PCIe Base 2.0 specification supports both 2.5GT/s and 5GT/s signaling rates, in order to retain backward compatibility with existing PCIe 1.0 and 1.1 systems. Aside from the faster bit rate, there are a number of improvements in this new specification that allow greater flexibility and reliability in designing PCIe links. For example, the interconnect can be dynamically managed for platform power and performance considerations through software controls. Another significant RAS feature is the inclusion of new controls to allow a PCIe link to continue to function even when some lanes become non-operational.
Q5: Then PCIe 2.0 must be backward compatible with PCIe 1.1 and 1.0?
A5: Yes. The PCIe Base 2.0 specification supports both the 2.5GT/s and 5GT/s signaling technologies. A device designed to the PCIe Base 2.0 specification may support 2.5GT/s, 5GT/s or both. However, a device designed to operate specifically at 5GT/s must also support 2.5GT/s signaling. The PCIe Base specification covers chip-to-chip topologies on the system board. For I/O extensibility across PCIe connectors, the Card Electromechanical (CEM) and ExpressModule™ specifications will also need to be updated, but this work will not impact mechanical compatibility of the slots, cards or modules. Currently, the PCI-SIG is defining the PCIe CEM 2.0 specification which has been released to members for review at v0.5. There are currently no plans to adapt the PCIe Mini CEM specification for the faster bit rate as the market need has not yet materialized.

  • MSI P35 Neo2-FR + 2x2GB RAM

    1. I'm about to order that combo (MSI P35 Neo2-FR and 2x2GB TeamGroup Elite PC2-6400U CL5-5-5-15), but before I hit the Buy button I want to ask if the MSI motherboard has any known problems with 2GB sticks.
I intend to run the system @ 400MHz FSB so the memory can run at its rated speed 1:1.
    2. What BIOS version is recommended here?
    3. Does anyone know if the Asus Triton 75 heatsink fits in between all those motherboard heatsinks and heatpipes?

Well if 2GB sticks didn't work good with the board what would be the point of the bundle?
I dont understand that remark. Thats the point of this thread, will 4GB work good on the MSI P35?
The CPU will be an E6550.
As for 400MHz, I really hope that MSI didnt make another P965 Platinum here, which has a poor overclocking potential. 400MHz FSB is nothing for my Abit QuadGT and most other P965/P35 based motherboards.
I will be really pissed if the P35 Neo2 wont be able to reach 400MHz FSB.

I want to buy a msi p35 neo2 fr and a e2180 processors and i saw that on msi's memory list for this mobo there isn't any DDR II 800 mentioned for processors with 800 Mhz FSB .This means that the mobo doesn't work with DDR II 800 and a processor with 800 MHz FSB ?

it does work with DDR2 800 and 800mhz fsb.

  • MSI P35 Neo2-Fr -- can't get onboard audio device to appear in XP

I've just installed XP sp3 onto my new mobo (MSI P35 Neo2-Fr).
Attached is Q6600 core2 quad processor, 2GB memory (DDR2), ATI HD4850 gfx card. I haven't changed the bios much at all or overclocked anything yet.
All seems fine *except* that I can't windows XP to see that there's an onboard audio device.
(It is enabled in the bios btw.) I've tried installing the high def audio driver on the CD from mobo box, and also downloaded the latest from the MSI site. I uninstall the driver and reboot before trying to reinstall it again btw.
The audio driver installer used to say there was a problem installing the driver, but it doesn't any more. After installing it and rebooting, XP control panel -> Audio devices says there are no audio devices.
Also, I notice that there should be an extra audio item in the XP control panel (according to mobo manual), but this hasn't appeared.
In XP's system hardware list there are no sound devices under Sound, but there are two unknown PCI devices (with yellow question marks next to them).
    Any suggestions?

  • MSI P35 NEO2 FIR voltage problems!!

    Let's start:
     I have MSI P35 NEO2 FIR ,e5200,2 x Geil ultra plus 1066+,as us 2900CT,lcpower 6550g and...rest- not so important for my questions.
1.My problem is next: default voltage values for my RAM is ~2.2-2.4 every time I check in windows (speedfun, sisoft Sandra, everest..)shows me 2.0 or some time even 1.8v  . When i change voltage in bios and went to win voltage on RAM is still unchanged (2.0v)  .
Same thing happen with NB voltage. But CPU voltage I can change freely with no problem.
When I change fsb(try to overclock) suddenly memory voltage rises how i do not now  , but only to 2.35 and no more.
Can anyone help me fix this problem because my memory is not stable at 2.0 or 1.8 sometimes and system crashes?
2.When i change cpu settings from 12.5*200 to (example)10*300 in windows even in system properties see that my current clock is 12.5*300=3750 and not 10*300=3000 like it should be .
    Is it bios problem?
    My bios version is 1.9.
    Thanks!

same problem with the Neo2 FR (like mine). After quite of bit of researching and testing i reckon that software can not correctly read the vRAM on these MSI boards. I found that Speedfan, Everest, and HardwareMonitor all gave an incorrect reading for my RAM's voltage. Also, if i increased the cpu voltage in the BIOS then the voltage monitoring programs would show an increase in CPU voltage and RAM voltage (even though i had not changed the latter).

I want to overclock and i want to change the multiplier to make some tests ! And i can`t do that without EIST DISABLED !
OK, stay calm.  Getting frustrated is only going to make people not reply.
I'm not sure why disabling EIST is giving you a BSOD.  I don't think anyone has any ideas since you have no real replies.
A kernel trap is hardware failure usually.  Makes me think when you disable EIST, the machine becomes unstable.   Are you setting the default multiplier for your processor?  Hell, we don't even know what it is.  How about you list your rig specs?
Just to add:  Overclocking with EIST enabled is pretty much the same.  You save power, so I don't know why you'd want to turn it off, in all honesty.

  • MSI P35 Neo2 FR... DOA?

OKay, I just tried to set up this combo:
    E6550
    MSI P35 Neo2 FR
    MSI HD 3850
    2x2GB Teamgroup Elite CL5
    OCZ Stealthstream 600W
Unfortunately the system does nothing when I hit the power button. Only the standby LED is on, nothing else happens, not even the fans start spinning. The diagnostic LEDs dont light up either, simply nothing happens.
This is what I have already tried:
Different case, with different power button
    Tried different RAM
I tried the PSU in another system, works flawlessly
I checked all cables and connections, everything is installed properly
I set the FSB jumper to 333MHz
But in general, if any other component would be faulty, the mobo would at least beep or the diagnostic LEDs would show a problem. But in this case the system refuses to start.
What could be the problem here?

  • MSI P35 Neo2-FR

    Hi
    MSI P35 Neo2-FR v1.1 Bios 1.1
    cpu e4300
intial findings on 200 FSB jumper 9x356 takes 1.4v on NB to get into windows
    9x356 on 266 FSB jumper takes stock(1.250)
Some questions, what is a safe voltage to run on the p35 chipset and on this board? Also the board defaults to 2t command rate, and I can see nowhere to select or change, where/can you change to 1t.
In Bios, there is a setting  "Auto disable Dimm/PCI Frequency"   what does this do?
    thanks in advance

Changing the straps causes the chipset to use tighter or looser timings. Why the excessive voltage is required on 200FSB strap.
The auto disable is the PCI frequency lock, it's best enabled whenever overclocking.

  • Need Help with ESATA on MSI P35 Neo2-FR

I have the MSI P35 Neo2-FR motherboard http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1261 and trying to get the eternal ESATA to work.  It works with one individual HD.  I'm using an external ESATA drive with 3 HD inside the external case with one cable running into the external ESATA in the back of the motherboard.  It's only recognizing 1 drive and the other 2 isn't showing up.  If I switch it to USB connection it will read all 3 drives.  I'm running windows 7 x64 but it recognize on my other 2 computers with a different motherboard. I have install it with the ACHI setup in Bios and I've also install the Matrix Storage Controller after installation.  I never install the Intel ICH9R SATA RAID driver where you have to press the F6 to install it.  Is that what I'm missing and is taht needed for the ESATA to work?    I'm getting this message "A storage device was connected. If this device is a port multiplier, only port 0 of the port multiplier will be active." Been googling all day and still can't figure out what I'm missing.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

For some reason this board is Bios only have IDE, RAID and ACHI and I don't see a SATA.
IDE, RAID and AHCI are operating modes of the SATA Controller.  Everything okay here.

Seems to me it's either this board and it's driver don't let you use the port multiplier but it suppose to support port multiplier.
It is neither the board, nor is it the driver.  It is a limitation of the Intel ICH9R Chipset.  You will have the same problem on all P35/ICH9R based mainboards.  Read here:

Unfortunately, used in the south bridges ICH9R the version of such technology provides access only to one hard disk at the specific moment of time. . The technology became more complex to realize , which implies to several access disks simultaneously, possesses higher cost and more higher central processor loads , therefore it can be rejected.

  • Installing MSI P35 Neo2-FR

    Hello
I'm installing Q6600 on my MSI P35 Neo2-FR mainboard. In the user guide it says (2-3, 2-4):
    - "Make sure that you apply an even layer of thermal paste (or thermal tape) between the CPU and the heatsink to enhance heat dissipation"
    - "Remember to apply some thermal paste on it for better heat dispersion"
    - "Meanwhile, do not forget to apply some thermal paste on CPU before installing the heat sink/cooler fan for better heat dispersion."
I'm feeling less confident in installing my Q6600 now without this thermal paste, since it's explicitly *recommended* in the guide. What would happen if I did not apply the paste?

    Quote
What would happen if I did not apply the paste?
The heat the processor generates would not be properly dissipated to the heatsink.  In a worst case scenario your CPU could shutdown automatically because of overheating and/or be damaged.
Have a look at your heatsink itself.  Often thermal paste or some sort of thermal pad is pre-applied for easier installation.
If there is not such thing get some thermal paste before you install CPU+heatsink.
