MSI P45 Diamond and 16GB

I just bought a second hand P45 Diamond with the hope to use lots of ram at low cost, but now i am facing a huge doubt : every mention description of the motherboard state it only supports up to 8gb of DDR3, while the P45 Platinum supports 16GB of DDR2.
The chipset is supposed to handle 16GB, as it does in Asus P5Q3 Deluxe for instance.
I asked this question on gskill forum, and they said they don't know if a bios upgrade increased the memory capabilities of this motherboard...
So my question is, should i continue in this road, or should i give up? Did a bios upgrade unlocked 16GB of DDR3 capability in this motherboard or am i out of luck?
I am waiting for the motherboard, i bought it and made searches after, which is pretty lame i acknowledge now... And was planning to buy the ram later, but now i don't know... :/

8GB max is an Intel limitation on the P45 chipset in combination with DDR3 memory. The DDR2 memory boards can accommodate 16GB

Thus don't hold your breath on positive feedback.
Also save your money on the memory and get some Jedec standard black chips on a green board. The Crucial kit that you see in my signature has shown excellent results on all DDR3 platforms. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148262

  • MSI P45 Diamond : Question about voltages and straps.

    Hi,
Before I start a post with my overclocking problems I want to learn more about the board and have a few questions:
    1. OC Jumpers: What do they exactly do, do the increase any voltages, do the change the nb strap or do they only increase the fsb. If they do not change the strap, when/where does the board change it 266/333/400?
    2. What is the maximum safe voltages for the mch, ich, fsb?
    3. New BIOS: Does anyone know when can we expect one or where can I download a beta that is newer than 1.4.
Ok, my problem is that I can overclock past 390. I can get 400 but it is not stable in windows. I first want tolearn how the board works before I discuss my oc problem.
    PC Specs:
    MSI P45 Diamond (v1.4 Bios)
    Intel Q9300 (ran 2000fsb on a xfx 780i)
    4x1gb Transcend aXeram DDR3-1800+
    Zalman 850W power supply
    XFX GTX 260 XXX
    Xfi Titanium
    Thanks

The jumpers change the strap & the FSB Frequency:
When you have an FSB-266 MHz processor and put the jumpers into the 333 MHz position, the FSB Clock Speed will be forced to 333 MHz and the BIOS treats the CPU as though it is an FSB-333-MHz Processor, that means even after a CMOS Clear, the FSB Clock Speed will be 333 MHz and FSB/Memory Ratio will be adjusted automatically based on that strap and the SPD Tables of your memory modules.

The Intel Datasheet for the P45 Chipset should give you a basic overview on voltage ranges.  However, you may need to exceed these ranges, in some cases, depending on your overclock to keep the system stable.  You will find nobody, that will seriously be willing to tell you the "maximum safe voltage" as every voltage increase is potentially dangerous to your the components.  Welcome to overclocking.

The latest BETA I know about so far is v1.5b1.

  • MSI P45 Diamond size and coolers

    Hello,
I want to install a new CPU cooler on this motherboard but i dont know if it will fit. There's no name list of motherboard compatibility about this cooler... there's only the socket and the size.
Can you tell me if the size of the P45 Diamond and MSI P45 Neo3-FR or MSI P45 Platinum rev 1.1 are the same around the CPU ?
Or do you have the size around the CPU and the height of heatpipes ?
I can't find these on google and there isn't a topic about size and MSI P45 diamond...
The cooler I want to buy is scythe mugen 2 (size : http://www.scythe-eu.com/forum/mugen-series/767-mugen-2-dimensions.html).
Please, don't tell me to ask Scythe because i don't have any answers from them (nice support eh)... You're my last chance.
    Have a nice day.

If it helps at all, I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 plus with dual push/pull fans on a Core 2 Quad E6600 with my P45 Diamond in a Gigabyte GZ-X tower and it fits perfectly at 158.50mm with no modifications.  Your Scythe is slightly (I mean SLIGHTLY; 1mm lol) shorter so you should be fine.

  • MSI P45 Diamond, Wont Start Up

    Motherboard - MSI P45 Diamond
    Bios - 1.1
    Processor - Intel Core2Quad Q9650 3.0GHz
    Memory - 2x 2GB OCZ Reaper X 1333MHz DDR3
Power Supply - CoolerMaster Real Power M1000
    Graphics - ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
I have just installed my new pc componants and when I turn the power on everything comes on the fans, cd/dvd, hard drives but there is no beep and nothing happens, I cant even get into the bios to change some of the settings.
Does anyone have an idea as to what is causing this and if there are any way of fixing this.
    Thanks

Okay, the industry standard voltage for DDR3 modules is 1.5V, not 1.85V.  The usual timings for DDR3-1333 memory chips are typically 9-9-9-24, not 6-5-5-20.
The bottom line is, that the specs on that OCZ page are far away from any kind of standard specification which is a not a good thing in terms of compatibility.  For reference only, these are typical DDR3 specs:
    - DDR3-1066, 7-7-7-20, 1.5V
    - DDR3-1333, 9-9-9-24, 1.5V
Memory chips that nativey operate @1333 MHz, 6-5-5-20 @1.85V do not exist.  There is no chip manufacturer that produces such components.  So, whatever the native specs of you modules are, they are currently unknown to us, as OCZ seems to have a policy of not putting native ratings and SPD Profiles on their product pages.  They always only mention overclocked ratings.
Test each module seperately in the first memory slot and see if the system is able to boot up with either of them alone. If nothing changes, test some modules with trustworthy parameters, that do not need non-standard voltages and are known to operate with standard frequencies and timings.

  • MSI P45 Platinum and Scythe Ninja 2

    Hi all,
I'm a rookie here and sorry if this question has already been asked but search didn't give solution. I'm planning to buy an MSI P45 Platinum and found Circu-Pipe 2 interesting. They said it leaves enough space for "giant CPU heatsinks". Scythe's Ninja 2 seems to be a giant one... Cause I will purchase them via net, I cannot try them manually in a shop. Does anyone (or friend...) have the same or similar Circu-Pipe-d mainboard with a Ninja 2? Will them work together?
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers!

Managed to find the following link after doing a search, hope it answer ur queries

  • MSI P45 Diamond without watercooling

I've just bought a used MSI P45 Diamond mainboard. I see the mainboard has support for watercooling, but is this necessary? Can I use the board without watercooling until I buy one, or can it damage the board? I don't want to fire it up if I cant use regular aircooling.

suggest you check the mainboard photo here http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1479&maincat_no=1 to ensure that the factory passive cooling with heatpipes is still on your board.

  • MSI P45 DIAMOND issues

Hello, I have a intel X3350 xeon socket775 and I want to install it in a P45 DIAMOND (In Germany many dealers will ensure compatibility with the MSI P45 mb with my X3350). I would like to know how to do air cooling of the NB because I do not have a watercooling.
    Thank
    Mauro

It is very simple. Get a chassis that has a side airflow opening and fix a moderate speed fan of 8 to 12cm range with airflow of about 20cfm will do the job well. Make sure you have another exhaust fan at the rear of the chassis of equal specs to pull the warm air out of the system.

  • MSI p45 diamond + sata

Recently i ran into some real bad problems after updating the jmicron sata driver to the .52 version.
but first off my pc setup:
    Q9400s
    4x 2GB Kingston ddr3
    P45 diamond
2* 500GB sata drive (raid 1 on jmicron controller)
4* 1TB sata drive (raid 5 on intel controller)
    gfx = msi cyclone oc
and i still got a dvd writer also sata on the intel controller.
But now after reinstalling the jmicron drivers (reinstalled it because it didnt install the windows application) the bios cant find the jmicron drives if the intel raid is active. after a lot of struggling i ended up having to reinstall my windows 7 LOST my raid 5 well it only still has 2drives left in the raid and the other 2 it shows as outside eventho i never changed any data on them). And i still dont have the windows application for the jmicron sata.
I ended up changing it all to
raid 5 and raid 1 on the intel controller and put the jmicron in the bios to AHCI and hoocked my dvdr to that.
but anyone knows what the reason could be and if i can recover my raid 5 data?
and also how to get the frking jmicron windows application for the raid management?
And perhaps even a reason as to why all of a sudden my drives started dissappearing?

Thanks for the help i think i sorta managed to get it working again now.
Started the windows install wich i had load the .49 jmicron drivers then i rebooted and in the bios i changed one of the 3 options where you choose between IDE RAID or AHCI to IDE and left the other 2 at RAID and then it suddenly recognized all the drives straight after bios altho i did have to create 2 new raid setups so i hope i can still salvage some data from older drives ;/
But atleast all seems to be working for now just posted the solution here for future reference or incase anyone would encounter something similar.

  • Msi p4n diamond and memory module setup for dual channel reading

    hi,
ive just built my mum a pc using a msi p4n diamond mainboard which has 2 gig of ddr2 667 mhz memory, just wondering how to go about setting it up to dual channel as its currently showing up in boot post screen as being single channel.. Now correct me if i'm doing wrong but it has 2 green slots and 2 orange slots, should there be 1 stick of ram in green and one stick of ram in the oarnage slot to show dual channel or both sticks as they are situe at present in green slots please..
    system spec is below..
    mainboard - msi p4n diamond
cpu - intel pentium 4 @stock speed 3.0 ghz HT
geforce 8800 gs @ 512 meg of ram
    500 gig s-ata hard drive
    600 w coolmaster  psu
    2x1 gig kingston ddr2@667 mhz
    first release bios
thank you and hope you can advise me..

It's in the manual, if you don't have one you can download from here:
    http://www.msi.com/service/download/manual-4385.html
If both sticks are in green as you say then yes it's single channel. For dual channel you want to leave 1 stick in DIMM1, green slot nearest CPU & move the 2nd stick to the orange DIMM3 slot.
From left to right DIMM1/2-green, DIMM3/4-orange, dual is 1 stick DIMM1 & 1 stick DIMM3 or 1 stick DIMM2 & 1 stick DIMM4 or 4 sticks all four slots filled. Single channel is 2 sticks in green slots or 2 sticks in orange slots or not recommended is 3 sticks in 3 of the 4 slots.

  • MSI P45 Platinum and RAID 0!

System specs below! First of all this system is basically a gaming rig. I am running Vista 64 on one single Western digital hard drive, and using an identical drive for storage. I was thinking about setting up a RAID 0 array with these two drives. Can this be easily done with this mobo? I am just wondering if there are any quirks associated with the MSI P45 Platinum mobo that would make this a pain to set up. Anyone else running a RAID 0 with this mobo and having good results? Would it even be worth it?
I was told my several different people in the gaming community, that RAID 0 really speeds up map loading, which would be great. I would be backing up the array to another internal drive using True Image.
    Any advice would be great!!

Only, if you set the controller to AHCI Mode (which would not really be a problem either).  You probably won't need any additional drivers when the controller is working in IDE Mode.
If you have to install drivers, use the latest ones from the JMicron FTP Download Server:
    ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/jmb36x/Win2k_xp_Vista/
Ok, well I won't have my new storage drive until Thursday. I will run HD tune on the drive connected to both different controllers and see what is the fastest.
I know we talked about this just a little. Still wondering about the RAID drives, or any drives attached to the ICH10R's SATA connections when it is set to RAID in the bios. The drives, including my SATA CD/RW drive does not show under "Standard CMOS features". Just #7 and #8 of the JMicron's show since they are still set to IDE in the bios.
    You commented with:
"They are now Controlled by the ICH10R Firmware.  Look here":
--> Integrated Peripherals --> On-Chip ATA Devices --> AHCI Devices Group
    --> Integrated Peripherals --> On-Chip ATA Devices -->
Those locations are just where you set the RAID mode. There's no actual drives listed there. I do see a screen popup when booting my system with the two RAID drives saying "ok" and bootable. Plus I see them in the Matrix storage console. Is this normal then?  There really is no place when you search through the bios that you can see them listed??  I can hit the Ctrl and I keys and go into the actual RAID bios, but I don't see my RAID drives listed in the actual bios.
Am I explaining this right??  Just wanting to make sure everything is working right.  It sure seems to work well with bench marks. Here's a shot of my array with HD tune.  I'm thinking that burst rate can't be right.

  • Msi p7n-diamond and coolermaster hyper48

    Hi friends
Just wanted to know whether coolermaster CPU cooler Hyper48 will fit with msi p7n-diamond mobo with intel q6600.Will it work?
    Kindly suggest

I can't answer specifically, but did purchase and install a Rosewill RCX-Z4 120mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler for my p7n board with an E8400 processor.  I looked at that Coolermaster product but was a little concerned it wouldn't fit because of the heat pipes.  I opted to use the Rosewill brand as it had a better form factor, and it vents out the top of my case.
My only complaint about the Rosewill is you can't get to the CPU power connectors on the board (8 pin) inside the case with the cooler attached.  The fan assembly gets in the way.

Hello! Can you help me with this?
    bios v1.6
    Intel e5300 - 2,6ghz
    Msi p45 platinum
    2gb trancend ddr2 667
What function to enable, what to disable. Also, have I hardware overclock fsb jumpers (now sets to 200Mhz)-JB1 and JB2. And how to decrease cpu ratio if I have to( now is 200x13=2600Mhz). Also what dram ratio etc...
I'll be greatefull if somebodu help me,I just wanna overclock processor to 3gHz for every day,not 24/7, maybe 12/7...THANX and sorry for my bad English

hello! I try that, remove both the oc jumper, and I CAN'T EVEN RUN THE BIOS    So after couple restarts, i shut down pc and se jumpers to 200-266 mode. Disable what you said, set fsb 260 x multiplier 11,5 and get 3ghz. Some programs seys core 1 and 2 speed 3371mhz? I set cpu voltage to 1.32, little increase the ather voltages... With max load max temperature with core temp is 63c after couple hours. Should I do something to increase more speed or is better to leave it like this? Or try set jumpers to mode 266-333 and decrease cpu multiplier wuth more fsb?

  • NEED BIOS MSI P45 DIAMOND

    Hi!
I have a problem - can`t overclock my p45 diamond over 450 mhz at fsb with bios 1.67.
I need perfomance bios version. Where i can download it?

There are no up-to-date Performance BIOS Versions available for your mainboard.  If Performance BIOS Versions ever existed, they were released in the early BIOS Development Phase for testing purposes.  To be honest, I have not come across any Performance BIOS for your board yet and it is also highly questionable if such a BIOS would help you in any way (if it existed).  Whatever problem there is (or not is) does not necessarely have much to do with the BIOS you use.
If you need help and advice on overclocking, please open your own topic in the OC Section of this forum, provide FULL system specifications (read the >>Posting Guide<< first) and post a list of your current Cell Menu settings for comparison.
