MSI P45 Neo3-FR is underclocking my CPU when idle

I've noticed when running CPU-ID or MSI's "Dual Core Center" app that when my system is idling, it will change my CPU's multiplier from 9 to 6, which makes my 3ghz E8400 run at 2ghz. Now I'm sure this is a great way to save energy, but I would like a choice whether it's enabled or not. Is there any way to disable this?

There are only two kinds of "natural" explanation for such a phenomenon:
-> a CPU power saving feature is enabled (EIST/SpeedStep [Cell Menu] and/or C-States [Cell Menu] and/or C1E-Support [CPU-Features])
-or-
-> the processor is overheating (the Core Temperatures have risen to a critical level (approaching the shutdown point) causing the processor to automatically clock itself down and lower the Core Voltage to cool down.

  • Need help with MSI P45 Neo3-FR

I haven't been here in a long time. My old board (just replacing it) worked perfectly for almost 4 years after I ironed out the kinks (MSI 865p Neo2-FISR) but I finally decided to upgrade my rig, but here comes the headaches...
I bought the following for my new setup:
MSI P45 Neo3-FR (came with BIOS 1.3 installed)
    2GB (2x1) Corsair Dominator 6400C4D
    MSI Radeon HD 4850
Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 (I want to overclock it hehe)
    Lite-On SATA CD/DVD-RW
    Old Hardware being used:
    Antec TruPower 550W EPS12 (single rail 36amps on +12)
Cooler Master Centurion (forgot what model) Case
    Logitech USB Keyboard
    Logitech MX518 USB Mouse
    2x120mm fans
2xMaxtor SATA 80GB HDDs (note: NOT SATA II, and I want to run these in RAID 0 off the ICH10R, this is specifically why I bought this board I was going to go with the P43-Neo3 over this, but the inclusion of RAID sold me on it)
1xMaxtor SATA 160GB HDD (note: NOT SATA II)
Aside some trouble I had with the Intel HSF installation was a breeze. Everything is in. I wanted to run everything stock first. Jumped into the BIOS and set the following:
    SATA Controller - RAID
    DRAM Voltage - 2.1v
    Drive Layout:
    SATA1 - 80GB Maxtor
    SATA2- 80GB Maxtor
    SATA7 - Optical Drive
    SATA8 - 160GB Maxtor
First power on to get into the BIOS was quick. After setting SATA to RAID, POST will hang at Auto-Detecting ACHI Port 1....then find HDD after about 20-30 seconds. And it will repeat itself for Port 2. So its taking me close to a minute (I might be exagerrating but it sure isn't quick and long enough to irritate me having to keep booting) just to POST and even access the BIOS.
Tried to use my current Windows XP install, got to the Windows XP Splash screen and it rebooted. Tried again, with super long ass POST, again rebooted at the splash screen. Said, fine I'll reinstall XP.
While browsing here I forgot where I read about the SATA and long posts, so I changed my 2x80GBs to SATA3 and SATA4, it no longer takes a minute to POST, goes quick as normal.
Set Optical to boot, go into the Windows XP Install screen, F6 for custom drivers, made a RAID disc using three sources (1. RAID drivers from MSI Website, 2. RAID drivers from MSI CD included with Motherboard, 3. RAID Drivers from Intel website) and each time at a certain point I'd get a BSOD.
Tried again by moving my last HDD/Optical to the ICH10 and disabled the Jmicron. Same, BSOD.
Switched off RAID in the BIOS and set it to IDE. AGain BSOD at XP Install.
Started to think it was a Memory issue, ran Memtest both sticks passed.
One thing I noticed in the BIOS, it has my RAM clocked at 1066. Everything is on auto minus the voltage, but I didn't think it would affect it. So I changed the Ratio from auto to 1:2 (800mhz CPU:800mhz DRAM) but still BSOD everytime I try to install Windows.
This is getting frustrating. I've run out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Read here how to do it:
    >>> Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD<<<
    >>> Slipstreamed Windows XP CD Using SP2<<<
Other option is borrow such installation disk from friends.
I moved away from my "friends" and none PC literate, so I'd be better off driving to the store and buying Vista at this point. Haha.
Okay, going to try this...sounds like that project I started a whiles back but got lazy.
Thanks guys, I'll report any results.

  • MSI P45 Neo3-FR..Overclocking help please !

Hi i have a MSI P45 Neo3-FR [v1.0] and have managed to update bios to latest version 1.5 i am having trouble finding my way around the bios in order to overclock. Previously i have owned asus boards and it was pretty straightforward but with this board i cannot seem to have full control over all adjustments i think i could adjust fsb and possibly memory ratio and timings but not Vcore and memory voltages as they are greyed out. On the asus boards you got a dropdown list 1.1v~1.8v etc but i cannot get this option with this board.
My memory is corsair [6400] with cpu-z it seems to have timings correct but voltage should be 1.9 my cpu is a E8200 core speed 2673x8 vcore 1.192v i have disabled speedstep [f4] and spread spectrum and the jumpers are set to 266mhz~333mhz.
Any advice on this much appreciated i don't know if there is a tutorial specific to the msi bios advanced settings and how to enable it or a discription of what msi call the voltages adjustments doesn't seem to be v.core...confused!
    King regards all

Thanks for help people i have got a good overclock..well for me  I got FSB to 400mhz so my processor was 3.2ghz and memory running at 800mhz with 1:1 ratio and voltage at 1.9.
I did try to go heigher but pc just re-booted 3 times then re-set to optimum i tried a bit more voltage for cpu but it still refused. Funny thing is when i re-did FSB to 400mhz again it booted and ran no bother i checked speed and cpu was again 3.2ghz but ram was 960mhz ... i forgot to re-set ratio back to 1:1 so my ram is running at 1920mhz instead of 1600 testing with prime but i would have thought if its stable i could push cpu further possibly as i know ram can handle a lot more than 800mhz. Is this correct ?

  • MSI P45 NEO3 + Q8200: Enabling Virtualization?

    My system is:
    MSI P45 NEO3 (BIOS AMI 2.61)
    Intel Q8200
I have tried for the last hour to download a newer BIOS version but the website is down.
I am running ESXi 4.0 and when I try to create a 64 server 2003 virtual machine it tells me that my host does not support 64 bit, please enable VT
The processor supports it, please tell me how it has been solved since it seems to have been in PM's.
    Many thanks

    Quote
    The processor supports it
No, it doesn't.  The Intel Q8200 Quad Core Processor does not support Virtualization Technology:
    http://www.intel.com/products/processor/core2quad/specifications.htm
    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=36547
As long as you use a Q8200 you will be unable to take advantage of VT (no matter what board or BIOS you use).  The only way to solve this is to install a processor that supports VT.
    One more thing:
    Quote
    MSI P45 NEO3 (BIOS AMI 2.61)
That is not your BIOS Version.  To check your current BIOS Version, please look under Standard CMOS Features -> System Information in the BIOS Setup.

I have tried for the last hour to download a newer BIOS version but the website is down.
No BIOS Update will make your Q8200 support VT.  The CPU simply does not support this feature.

    please enable VT
    Impossible.

Hi people, I just bought a new motherboard "MSI P45 neo3-fr". After installing the cpu E5200, videocard, dvd rom and hardisk, I switch it on only the cpu fan, videocard fan are running and the 4 blue led lit up. Even when i press the dvd button to open, it doesn't. Tried checking the harddisk n videocard with another computer and they are working. Ohh, I forgot to mention that I've inserted a 2GB kingston DDR2-667 ram already. Strange thing is, when I unplug the IDE cable from the dvd rom, and press the open button, the dvd rom open.
Is there something wrong with the motherboard or there's a mistake on the installation that I did. I'm really confused!!!

  • MSI P45 Neo3 FR PCB1.0 & memory timings problem

I recently upgraded my motherboard from the P35 Neo2 FR to the Neo3 FR mainly because my 4870 was covering some of the SATA ports.
Anyroads the Neo3 is 100% stable with just one slight problem.
My 2x2gb sticks of Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 will not run at their proper timings ie 4-4-4-12
all i seem to be getting is 5-5-5-18 reported by both CPU-Z & Everest
even tho i've set this in the bios manually.
Now i never had this problem with the P35 Neo2 FR set the memory to 4-4-4-12 in the bios i got 4-4-4-12
So does anybody know how to fix this or is it a bug that proberly be addressed in the next bios
im currently using the latest bios which is 1.6.

Ok problem solved to actually get this motherboard to work with correct memory timing ie in my case 4-4-4-12 then download the 1.71 beta bios
    which can be found here.
    http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/BIOS/Msi/MSI-P45-Neo3-Series-Bios-171-Beta.shtml
no stability problems as of yet with it, happy now as i can use my memory as it was intended.

  • MSI P45 Neo3 FR - E7400 - reoccuring restart issue

I just received new parts to rebuild my PC. It were:
    MSI P45 NEO3 FR
    Intel E7400
    2x2GB A-Data (800) memory
and BQ Dark Power 450W PSU
    Unfortunately I have an issue:
After building this (with addition of my old GPU Geforce 7950) I wanted to test it... I run this set into BIOS it worked till CPU temp. reaches around 40C then it gets into restarting loop. It happened each time I made a test. Of course I've tried also with my HD attached to the set with the same result. I've checked the RAM and PSU on my friends PC and it works fine so the next 'suspect' is mobo..
    What might be wrong?
My best guess is BIOS - I have A7514 IMS V.1.3
It is old but how to upgrade it when there is such a big risk in restart during process...

    Quote
I did not installed new Window, at present I don't think it would be possible with hardware going into restart after few minutes at best... But when I attached my harddrive with Win XP on it it runned just more or less for the same amount of time (like in plain bios) before it gets restarted.
Nah you can't just plug in a hd that contain window and other drivers which is mean for another mobo and hope miracle work though some does but in the long run you're bound to run into issue. Not forgetting different mobo are having different chipset, unless you get back the same mobo.
If you doesn't believe me, give it a try and reinstall window from fresh with the mobo driver cd. If you don't have window or are facing licence key issue. Install linux as in ubuntu instead

Test the mainboard outside the case on a non-conducting surface in barebone configuration (one stick of RAM, CPU, video card, power connectors, keyboard).  Make sure all power connectors are properly connected:  24-Pin ATX, 4/8-Pin +12V CPU, 6-Pin +12V PCI-Express (video card))
If nothing changes, please try a better PSU.
outside the case with one stick of RAM is working. if i put second ram computer restarting again. It means that problem is in RAM?

I tryed many cmos resets and FSB jumpers changing, but nothing work !
Can I try something more ? Thanks.

Please have a look at your PSU. A label on the side should give you the max amps for the 12V rail.
Try with another PSU with sufficient power. Check all your power connections once again.
Try with only one mem stick and in "barebone"config, i.e. mb outside the case on a non conductive surface, i.e. wooden table.

  • MSI P45 Neo3-FR ver2: FSB question

Helli, can you help me please with questions about this mobo. I'm not an expert, so sorry if I'm asking some dumb stuff.
So, I had to change my old motherboard during warranty service. It was Gigabyte GA-P45-DS3LR, so they replaced it by MSI P45 Neo3-FR ver2.
    Other hardware:
    CPU: Core 2 Dou E 8500
    GPU: Gigabyte Radeon HD4850
RAM: Patriot something on 800 MHz
    BIOS: 4.5.
So after 1 week of using this mobo I noticed, that some games and software loading longer than before on old mobo, which I used more than a year.
I installed Everest, CPU-Z, and MSI's Dual Core Center just to look at me system... and they show something strange in FSB.
As I know, my CPU should work at 333 (x6/9.5), and in BIOS it shows Current Clock 333x9.5. But all monitoring programs show 332.
Then I went to Dual Core Center -> Motherboard Clock to FSB adjusting. It shows 332 and next line 333, highlighted green (shows that this is default, i suppose). I switched FSB to 333, Dual Core Center start to show 333, but Everest and CPU-Z - 334 (here is screen shots: http://img132.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=332a.jpg ).
Then I switched FSB to  - all monitors shows 334. Then I flashed BIOS to 4.4, booted with defaults, settings in BIOS was 333x9.5, but monitoring programs start to show 334. Then I flashed BIOS back to 4.5.
So, can anybody say - this is motherboard issue or something else? On old mobo all was fine, how it suppose to be, in Everest and CPU-Z.
And also, when I enable power saving I have maximum 2 LED lights even at 100% of CPU load - that means 50% of energy consumption?

First of all: Uninstall Dual Core Center or make at least sure that it does not automatically start when Windows starts (it has the power to modify the FSB Clock Speed and may be a factor here).
Then:  Unplug your PSU from A/C power and >>Clear CMOSe<<. Then load "opitmized Defaults" in BIOS Setup and Disable Spread Spectrum before your save settings and exit.
    That may already help.
In any case, smalll deviations from the set clock speed in BIOS or not unusual.  They are not really a sign of any damage or defect and they also do not have any functional consequence whatsoever.

  • MSI P45 Neo3-FR and MSI HD4850 signal loss

    My computer:
    MSI P45 Neo3-FR
    MSI HD4850
    E8400 E0
    2x2Gb DDR2 800MHz (MDT)
    Samsung F1 320Gb
    Toughpower Qfan 500W PSU
    Vista 64-bit
    The problem:
The motherboard came with BIOS version 1.0 which didn't support the E8400 E0. To fix that I had to update to version 1.3, which solved the processor issue but now the graphics card loses the signal at random while playing just about any game and after restarting the computer sometimes keeps on rebooting a couple of times. I read at the german tomshardware forum of someone with a similar problem that solved the problem by using BIOS version 1.2 but that isn't really an option for me since it doesn't support my processor. So any ideas?

Quote from: Frankenputer on 20-August-08, 21:52:14
Your PSU is only capable of 18A on 12V1 and 12V2, and only 16A on 12V3.  But, that doesn't mean that the rails can deliver all those amps at the same time, it's just the max.  Try to borrow a better PSU, preferably a powerful single +12V rail one, or get one as yours is not that great.
A good one to get would be the Corsair VX 550 or the TX 650 Corsair. Both are quiet and have powerful single +12V lines.
According to the ati webpage the Toughpower Qfan 500W is on the supported list for HD4850/70 though. One strange thing I just noticed is that 3dmark06 and furmark seem to run stable but gaming causes random signal losses. Of course it might also be a driver issue or something else(using catalyst 8.7 with Catalyst Control Center).
edit: Just noticed there is a new bios v1.4 available so I'll try that out and report back.
edit2: Ok, 1.4 was a disaster and wouldn't even let me reinstall Vista without bluescreens so now I'm trying out 1.2 and it seems to be working ok so far although it doesn't officially support my cpu.
