MSI P45 Overclocking problem

Hi,
Im trying to overclock my E8400 processor. I try to raise bus speed from 333MHz to 400MHz. It boots to windows but after like 10 secs I get BSOD. Im using FSB:DRAM ratio 1:1, core voltage 1.235V and DRAM voltage 2.1V. Im also using multi-step OC booster in mode 1.
My setups is:
Intel E8400
MSI P45 Platinum (Bios 1.0)
OCZ 4GB 800MHz DDR2 PlatinumXTC (OCZ recommend 5-4-4-15 latency but i have those setting in auto and latency atm is 6-6-6-18, problem?)
GF GTX 280
Zalman 600W PSU
Thanks for you help!

Im also using multi-step OC booster in mode 1.
I'm not sure what this is but I think you need to disable settings such as these to be able to successfully OC. For example (X38):
D.O.T. Control = disabled
Intel EIST = disabled
C1E = disabled

I think trying auto is ok. Then raise memory voltage in increments. Try also setting FSB:DRAM to auto and see what happens.

  • MOVED: MSI P45 Platinum Problems

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=119387.0

Still does not work. Any ideas from users who have faced similar problems are welcome.
Meanwhile in a private message I have been accused of spamming all P45 threads. This is atrocious! Please guys, I am not here on behalf of MSI's business rivals to create a ruckus. I have spent my hard earned money on the board and am now facing problems. I hoped to gain sympathetic answers from fellow users, instead of biased accusations. Let me mention here that I have seen seven P45 problem threads on page no. 1 alone of this forum. I responded only to two of them, because my problems were similar.
So if you have any ideas to resolve my difficulty, please tell me about them. This is going to be my last MSI purchase. But that should deter fellow users from helping me out. You are not working for MSI after all!

  • MSI P45 Platinum Problems

    Hi.
I am trying to overclock, currently I'm in windows at 4Ghz on my E8500, I know its stable for that as its second hand and tested, the problem is, these GTL ref settings are confusing, even touching them and then saving and exiting bios results in no screen and a row or 4 RED LED's, turning the PC off and then back on solves that but it seems to happen now and again if I say restart windows as it loops and gets to the Bios screen, well its supposed to, it does not due to the red LED's.
Now I am hoping its because I'm simply not overclocking correctly, The Bios baffled me!, I had a Gigabyte P35C DS3R before with an E6600 and the bios was so much more simple.
I have disabled everything from the green power functions, spred spectrum, EIST speedstep etc....
    Voltage settings are as follows:
    CPU - 1.3325
    DRAM - 2.004
    MCH - 1.304
    VTT - 1.30V
    ICH Auto
    CPU Multiplyer is at 9.5X
    FSB is at 425Mhz - 1700QP.
Now if I go into the bios, save and exit, every time the screen never comes back on, it goes to 4 red LED's, now I know in the book that means CPU is damaged but it really is not, I'm hoping I just have the wrong mix of voltages, but I still can get into Windows, just not out of the Bios without turning the PC off due to 4 RED LED's..
Any help would be aprechiated, thanks.
I looked on google but seems not many info on this mobo.
Its a big trouble at the moment to overclock though
*EDIT**, Very sorry if I have posted this in the wrong forum, could a mod please move it?
    Thanks

I dont know if I need to tweak the GTL Ref settings?
Leave these GTL Ref settings on AUTO if you don't know what to do with them.  Do some reading on the technical background first as this is not the most basic stuff:

As far as I know "Multi-Step OC-Booster" is disabled.
You may want to try Mode 1 & Mode 2 and see what happens:
Mode 1-Entering OS then OC to setting level; No OC during H/W booting
Mode 2-OC some percantage during H/W booting, and then entering OS to OC to setting level

odd really its supposed to be able to do 4Ghz at 1.32V this
Says who? What are you basing this assumption on?

  • MSI K7N2G overclock problem with new bios

I recently purchased a Radeon 9800 Pro and since then ive had nothing but problems.
Firstly the machine would randomly not bot, requiring many resets to get the video to initialise.
    Also games would randomly CTD.
I found out that the MSI NForce 2 MB doesnt like Radeon cards and that it should be fixed in the latest bios updates.
I was using version 3.5 so decided to upgrade to the 3.9 version (very latest, it seems the board updates have stopped now)
    Problems now begin :'(
I rest the bios after flashing and went in to set all the settings to exactly what they were before.
    My old settings were:
    1/1 memory (dual channel enabled)
    175x12.5 Cpu (overclocked xp1700)
All other settings were maxed out including the memory timings.
This ran absolutetly 100% perfect for about 8 months until I installed the radeon and flashed the bios.
Now I can not even approach these settings.
If I attempt to run 1/1 memory speed (manual config) the machine makes single long beeps and doesnt initialise the display.
After trying different settings I managed to completly incap the board.
I only managed to fix it by installing my old GF3Ti 200(it then booted straight away)
It would not boot with the radeon even after 20 bios resets (removing battery etc etc)
Im now stuck with a machine that underperforms by 20% compared to the old bios.
Is there any reason why I can no longer overclock anywhere near the level I was before? (350mhz memory before >> now 266MAX!)
Please help before I am forced to spend another 80 quid (I cant afford) on the Abit NF7-S
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Buy the ABIT and save us the woes of rehashing this issue out with you as we've done with so many others now...what I believe that MSI did was loosen or tighten the specs to allow the Radeon to work with the MB but this is speculation on my part only...the initialization of the Radeons to date has been intermittent for most and non-existent for others...Glennvidia bought a 9800 a while back and had the same types of issues everyone else had just so that he could "see" for himself what the problems were...well he had problems and ended up returning the Radeon and left it at that, but he and I learned alot about it and came to the conclusion that for whatever reason MSI didn't hit the sweet spot for Radeon cards with their rendition of the nf2 chipset motherboard. It's a sad conclusion to make but if you went out and bought 3 to 5 MSI nf2 MB's and same for the Radeons I bet you'd find a combo that works together, maybe not flawlessly, but it'd work. There are some people on the forums here that have this combo and it does work flawlessly for them and they're really quite happy. They should also feel lucky about it as well because it wasn't the norm...
What you might do at this point is a search on this forum for Radeon and read the posts that you find regarding the issues and try some of the fixes that were posted and see if any of them work for you...this is a VERY talked about issue and left a very bad taste in a lot of mouths about who the users have blamed for the combo not functioning together...hell, who knows? It could be something Radeon did in their design and not MSI's design flaw at all...without extensive testing and documentation who is anyone to say who's "fault" it is?
In any case, I feel badly for you that it's not worked out the way you wanted it to and I hope that your next adventure into PC building goes better...

  • MSI P45-C51 (Problems With 4GB DDR3 1333)

    Hello,
I have a problem with my motherboard P45-C51.
According to test reports, this motherboard supports 4GB DDR3 modules (1333).
    msi.com/file/test_report/TR10_1836.pdf
    Data specifically are:
    Model: Kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G
    Size: 4GB
    2 DIMMs: V
    4 DIMMs: V
    R.S.T: OK
In the absence of stock the store, I bought a similar one:
    Fury HiperX DDR 3 1333 (HX313C9F/4)
however, the motherboard does not recognize the memory (when I turn on the computer, 3 beeps sound and restarts, return to ring 3 times and then restarts and so on)
With 2 GB DDR3 1333 DIMM working properly.
    I have last Bios v5.7
I found an online store the specified memory for my motherboard (Kingston KVR1333D3N9/4G) but want to be 100% sure it worked properly before buying.
    Thnks.

    hi,
With Fury HiperX DDR 3 1333 (HX313C9F / 4) i deleted the CMOS but I did not recognize. After much searching, I concluded that the problem could come from the distribution of the chips.
    The Kingston (Fury HiperX DDR3 - 1333 - HX313C9F/4) memory have 512Mbx8 Chips (single-sided)
The G.Skill Ripjaws (F3-10666CL7D-8GBRH) memory have 256Mbx16 Chips (in two sided)
With G.Skill The mbo detect the memory and boot normally. No necesary delete CMOS.
The only problem is latency, latency detects and configures it is nine. However, changing the latency in the BIOS manually to seven working properly.
    Thnks.

  • MSI P45-8D problem: reboot after loading startup services (windows seven 64bit)

    hi guys!
I decided (buying a cooler master elite 360) to keep my Memory Lover (whit ddr3/ich10r, pci-ex 2.0), which is actually the 'best purchase for me (rather than a G41 mATX) .
But then, after I had solved the problem of overheating in the pci-ex, and I put the board in its box for weeks, now has a new problem:
Continuous blocks & reboots just after loading startup services windows seven!
    The setup is this:
     Windows Seven 64bit
     MOBO MSI Memory Lover
     CPU Xeon L3110
     VGA MSI Radeon HD5450 1gb ddr2 fanless
     DDR3 1333 4GB
PSU Tacens Radix V mATX 35Watt Velociraptor + Caviar Green
     DVD burner (sata)
Esi pci-ex sound card connect module
Creative Xtreme Gamer (disconnected for now)
I have many ram models that I can put in:
     kingston lovo 4gb 1333
     4g-skill eco 4gb 1333
     adata green 4gb 1333
     corsairs white 8gb 1600
All memories can work undervolt at 1.35volt, but-of course-I keep them in standard 1.5Volt for more stability
I also tried a single 2gb stick at a time, but nothing has changed
when the system reboots (I infer) windows finished loading all the startup services (including antivirus, network drivers, audio drivers, etc. ..). and I can say with near certainty, that the last major service that is loaded, is the catalyst control center ...
I suspect an incompatibility with Memory Lover &  the Video Card's ATI driver ..
I also tried to uninstall and clean with driver sweeper, but the problem remains ..
Besides this I also have a problem with the temperature of the processor xeon l3110 (45watt tdp)
cpu heatsink as I have a Arctic Freezer LP 11 (Capacity Cooling 100W).
with thermal compound pre-installed I had 60/70 degrees recorded.
I changed the thermal compound with the famous Prolimatech pk-1 and now I measure 80/90 degrees ...(and I've changed a lot of thermal compound that I put with my eyes closed)
now, this is not possible because:
-I know the processor, I kept in daily use at 3Ghz with a noctua nh-U9B se2, and in summer never exceeded 40 degrees (d 'winter was about 30 degrees)
     - Either with the Scythe kama thermo, that with my finger, the heatpipes of the Freezer 11 LP, the Mosfet, the NB & SB are all cold .. the 5450 is 40 degrees or so, but it is fanless, and its temperature is in its normal ..
What can you tell me of my two problems:
     - Continuous reboots after loading windows seven
     - High temperature cpu (probably not real)
I remind you that a few months ago the team & Memory Lover Xeon L3110 worked perfectly.
The PSU is a new 350Watt Tacens Radix V mATX ... the system at idle consumes 70/80 watts (measured at the wall) ... I think it Is not a problem of the little power supply for the needs of my system ..
and anyway I can try to use an old Enermax 450watt Liberty, which I keep for emergencies..
     thanks
     max

    guys,
     I solved the problem!
the sink was installed wrong, and did not touch on the processor!!!
the problem was the mosfets around the cpu that make thickness in height ..
the thermal paste was put well and ... still immaculate!
processor took about 20 (or more) of restarts and very high working temperatures!
     it rocks!!
I can now say that the 'AC Freezer 11 LP is sensational!
The Xeon L3110 (with EIST, C1E & Acpi active together, That downclok it) works now to 23-25 degrees!!
     I have installed the ddr3 kingston 4gb Lovo 1333 + 8GB Corsair 1600 1.35Vram white.
(with 12GB, I can easily do a large Ramdisk for temporary files).
I installed hd5450 driver manually, but still the catalyst control center does not appear at startup
here is the screen of the situation:
finally...but how did I doubt the quality of this MSI board?

I know that these CPU temps are not aceptable, but as soon as my thermal grease arrives I'll use it with my TT cooler(current I'm on cooler box) and it will drop a lot.
    COOLING
    I just use:
a 120mm fan in the lower front of the case sucking the (cool)air in,
a 120mm fan in the middle back of the case blowing the (hot)air out,
a 80mm fan fixed in the door case blowing the (hot) air out,
a 80mm fan over the back of the VGA blowing air to the Northbridge heatsink,
and (about next week) Thermaltake Big Thyphoon 120 VX with Artic Silver 5.
The MSI N9800GTX is the best VGA cooler that I ever saw, it really does the job even in the extreme overclocks.
    FINAL WORDS
After I did this OC, I used the machine for about 4 hours with no problem at all. I did some tests, including some benchmarks like Super PI and 3Dmark 2006, but I did not made any stress test(prime95, orthos) because I'm still using the cooler box and this will for sure overheat it beyond it's capacity, therefore this OC was just a preparation(test) for the real one that I'll do when my thermal grease and my TT cooler were in place, I think that the voltages still can suffer some variation with the advantage of the new cooler, but it will be worked in the right moment, after all overclocking is a long process, when I wrote "final results" to the title of this topic, I mean that this is the clock that I wanted to reach, but of course that still lacks some fine adjustments.
The real objective of this test was to see:
    1. if the motherboard handles it stable.
    2. if there were no FSB walls to block my OC.
    3. if there were any voltage problems.
    4. if there were extreme overheating.(even with the cooler box)
and I'm more than happy to see that it passed in all the tests so far.

  • Msi p45 bios OC problem msi7512 1.6

    Hi,
Try to overclock my old pc in order to get a little bit extra out of it. From the moment I change the FSB just a very little (like one step up) and I push f10 to save, the pc crashes. when booting, no settings have been stored and he just boots in normal mode.
I have managed to overclock with the dual core overclock software of Msi that came with the motherboard without crashes.
Does anyone know why it keeps crashing when in bios? , or does someone knows some software to nicely overclock my board? Im not looking for super overclock, just up to 3.2 Gigz.
    Thanks in advance,
    My build
msi p45 platinum (7512 v1.6), updated to latest bios.
CPU: q9400, running standaard 2.6 mhz. - scynthe Ninja cooler
    Memory:2x 2gig  mushkin- 5-5-5-15. xps-8500 (1067mhz)
    GPU: Saphire 6870.

That is probably one of the best boards that MSI ever made.
To unleash the overclocking monster in that board, you have to flash to the v1.7 beta BIOS releases. Jack used up to 1.7b4 and I used the 1.7b10 to great effect.
You can read the thread here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=117741.0  reply #328 contains the beta BIOS A7512IMS.17A.rar
The beta thread will also provide you with a lot of useful information.
OC Memory related issues are the most common problem with these boards. A
Once you have the beta BIOS, you may find that you can set the OC jumper on the board so that the board boots at 400. At that frequency you ensure that your mem is set to run at 800, i.e. always ensure your mem ratio is set to 1:1. From there you start to OC further if you see the need. Forget the OC software.
This used to be my 24/7 OC with EIST and C-State Enabled.
    FSB 450
With my Q9550 that gave me 3825MHz. You may have to adjust your CPU multi or you may want to run your CPU at max multi and rather reduce your FSB speed. You need to test which works best for you.
    DRAM ratio 1:1
    CPU V 1.3325
    DRAM V 1.956
    MCH V 1.352
    VTT FSB V 1.35
The rest on Auto. This may or may not work for you, but its a starting point and you may just find that you could achieve similar results with lower voltages. Test, test and more test. But I stress again, with BIOS 1.6 this board would not run past a FSB of 420. With the beta I had it stable up to 500.
Here is a thread that may be useful as it contains the steps another user went through to OC this board  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=140858.0
Would a moderator please move this thread to the overclock part of the forum.

I turn off intel eist in bios  when  use stock speed (3GHz) my cpuz (ver 1.46) show 333*6 = 2GHz although when I play games it run 333*9 =3GHz just like I turn on intel eist
But when I overclock (Ex 400*6 = 3.6GHz) my cpuz show 3.6 GHz
I want to know that why when I use stock speed it seem like I turn on intel eist
this is normal (but think is not) or there are problem with my main board

I highly recommenend to keep the power saving functions enabled even if you are overclocking if the system does not become instable because of that.  There is no point in high frequencies when the system has nothing to work with.
    ok
there are another problem with bus ram when I set auto  it show 1067  but in cpuz show 400(=800) i'm not sure but I think it come form bios ver 1.5(if it not I think have broblem again  LoL)
because I remember that  frist I buy it it show 800 in bios (when I buy it come with bios ver 1.2 that not support my E8400 E0)
I think next bios should solve it (1.6 didnt says about ram so I didnt do anything)

  • Problem with MSI P45 Platinum DDR2 mainboard and Corsair Dominator PC8500C5D Ram

Hi, I have encountered with a problem.
    First I had
    MSI p45 platinum ddr2 bios ver. 1,4
    Intel E8400
    Corsair Dominator PC8500C5D 2x1Gb
2 Asus ATI EAH 3870 Crossfire
and it was running with windows XP without any problems.
Problems began when I decided to upgrade to 6Gb of ram and to install Vista 64. Ram modules witch I bought are the same Corsair Dominator PC8500C5D, but 2x2GB.
When i put them together adjust voltage 2.1v and timing 5-5-5-15 they fail mem test with huge amount of errors.
when I test only 2x2gb modules memtest sometimes doesn't open at all, sometimes just stops working on 8 minutes of test. couple of times they completed memtest without any errors.
Can someone advice what should I do and what could the problem?
    Thank you for your answers.

    1) the modules are not the same (the DDR2 chips are different)
    2) as general rule, mixing 2x1GB with 2x2GB is a bad idea.

  • MSI P45 Neo-f with intermittent boot problems

    Current system:
    *CPU: Intel core2duo 4300 1,80GHz
    Mobo: MSI P45 Neo-F LGA775
    *Memory: 1 Kingston 1GB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 and 1 Dane-Elec 1GB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2
    Videocard: Club3D Nvidia 8800GT 512MB GDDR3
*Hard drive: 120GB IBM deskstar 7200rpm Ultra-ATA/100 (yes I realize it is known as the deathstar, but it hasn't failed so far, I do back-up because I'm paranoid
PSU: Real Silent Nexus NX-5000 500 watt
    *Soundcard: Soundblaster Audigy
OS: Windows XP home, service pack 2
    *Lite-on IT dvd-rom drive
    *floppy disk drive
I also have 3 case fans spinning away in a marginally large Chieftec Dragon tower.
The parts I marked with an asterisk (*) are parts that I removed from my old rig and re-used.
I'll try to give a clear rundown of my problem and the steps I've taken so far.
3 days ago I acquired the P45 Neo and installed it into my system, together with the 8800GT videocard. I was still using my old PSU, a Chieftec 360watt. This PSU served me well for 7 years, but it was starting to build up noise while trying to keep up games on my old rig.
I had some trouble getting the system to boot, I tried changing some of the 4 pins wires going to the hard drive and the dvd drive. I don't know if it was luck or if I managed to divide the load properly for the system to boot. But I succeeded into booting up, got into the bios and eventually installed WinXP.
As soon as it was time to install the videocard drivers, it stopped responding. I assumed it was a power issue, since I could only install the 20pin and 4pin cpu, but my Chieftec PSU didn't have a 24pin plug to the mobo - and it needed replacing anyway! So I bought a new 500watt PSU that had all the required plugs and more wattage.
I installed the new PSU, checked every connection and pressed the power button. 'Lo and behold, the computer starts up. I install the videocard drivers and it proceeds with no problems. I try to install the soundcard, but the cd says I don't have one installed. I fix that by going to the System list and install the drivers from there. I install a firewall. By then I have successfully rebooted the computer 3 or 4 times. I decide all is well and turn off the computer. But I realize I wanted to check up something on the internet.
I press the powerbutton. The PC power light go up for just a fraction of a second. I can see the blue LED of one of the case fans switching on just as briefly - then it goes out. The computer keeps trying to turn itself on. It looks like it's hickupping to try and boot!
I turn off the PSU power on the back-side because the computer keeps trying and wait for a bit. After 10 minutes, it still doesn't work. I leave the computer for a bit and return an hour later. The computer then starts up with no problems. I turn it off after a few hours, do a reset, start it up, no problems. But then the next day it happens again.
It's pretty tough figuring out what the problem is because it looks..almost random. I considered it could be a heat issue, but sometimes it *does* start up just after it's been turned down. Checking the bios shows no strange temperature shifts.
Hope anyone can help me, because I do not want to go back to my old Asrock mobo

While powered down I cleared the cmos data, removed the Dane Elec DDR2 module and set the bios to optimized defaults. Computer restarted to WinXP with no problems (it has been off the whole night). I shut down WinXP, wait a few moments and then turn the computer back on. Alas, it won't start and starts hick-upping. I turn power off at the PSU again, so it stops.
Now I try switching out the Kingston module instead. By now the computer has been off for 10 min (while I write this entry on laptop). I press the power button on the PSU and then the power button on the front. There is a short pause, lasting a second. The computer turns on, longer now, but it only lasts 2 whole seconds before it turns off again and goes on again (I believe now you can call it powercycling). It repeats this process until I shut off the PSU.
I check to see if I have installed it properly and try again but it starts powercycling again.
15 min pass, I put the Kingston module back in, press the power button and voila, this time it does start. WinXP shows up, no problems. I leave it on for a bit and then shut down. And when I press the power button again - the feeling of dread returns, when it starts hickupping again.
I'm going to see if I can install one of the memory modules from my housemate. Then hopefully tommorrow, I'm going to try if I can test a different PSU, since I see someone else on the forum - who recently posted, has the exact same power supply and also has boot problems, coincidence... or not ^^;.

  • MSI P45 Neo3-FR..Overclocking help please !

Hi i have a MSI P45 Neo3-FR [v1.0] and have managed to update bios to latest version 1.5 i am having trouble finding my way around the bios in order to overclock. Previously i have owned asus boards and it was pretty straightforward but with this board i cannot seem to have full control over all adjustments i think i could adjust fsb and possibly memory ratio and timings but not Vcore and memory voltages as they are greyed out. On the asus boards you got a dropdown list 1.1v~1.8v etc but i cannot get this option with this board.
My memory is corsair [6400] with cpu-z it seems to have timings correct but voltage should be 1.9 my cpu is a E8200 core speed 2673x8 vcore 1.192v i have disabled speedstep [f4] and spread spectrum and the jumpers are set to 266mhz~333mhz.
Any advice on this much appreciated i don't know if there is a tutorial specific to the msi bios advanced settings and how to enable it or a discription of what msi call the voltages adjustments doesn't seem to be v.core...confused!
    King regards all

Thanks for help people i have got a good overclock..well for me  I got FSB to 400mhz so my processor was 3.2ghz and memory running at 800mhz with 1:1 ratio and voltage at 1.9.
I did try to go heigher but pc just re-booted 3 times then re-set to optimum i tried a bit more voltage for cpu but it still refused. Funny thing is when i re-did FSB to 400mhz again it booted and ran no bother i checked speed and cpu was again 3.2ghz but ram was 960mhz ... i forgot to re-set ratio back to 1:1 so my ram is running at 1920mhz instead of 1600 testing with prime but i would have thought if its stable i could push cpu further possibly as i know ram can handle a lot more than 800mhz. Is this correct ?
