MSI P7N Diamond - New PC Build - Need Help Posting

I just finished connecting my P7N Diamond out of the case and powered on my new build for the first time and saw BIOS version, HDD information, and the bad checksum message on the screen. I also saw the "Press DEL to enter BIOS" and the "F2 To Continue" messages.
Pressing the DEL key on the keyboard resulted in nothing happening at all. I soon realized that the keyboard wasn't responding and I had no num lock light at all after pressing the Num Lock key multiple times. I started with a generic, USB keyboard and then swapped keyboards to an older, still working one I had with a PS/2 connector.
Still no keyboard lights but magically it entered BIOS after I plugged it in the PS/2 socket and immediately asked if I wanted to exit BIOS without saving. Pressing the "Y" key did nothing. Pressing <ESC> did nothing. The keyboard seemed frozen.
I pressed the RESET button on the motherboard and this caused a re-boot but now with a black screen (no messages at all). I powered it down, removed the power cords and then pressed the "clear CMOS" button. Re-connected the power cords and powered it on; but still a black screen. Powered it down, removed the power cords and removed the battery for 1 minute (I even pressed the clear CMOS button again). Re-connected the power cords, powered it up and still have a black screen.
I know this is the place where all the experts hang out, so any help will be appreciated.

Just an update...
New build is working very well at this point.
I've set the voltage in BIOS to 2.1 for the memory and installed Vista Ultimate, updated it via Windows Update site, applied the memory patch. I've discovered that I have a bad stick of memory as no matter what slot I place this one stick of memory in, the PC fails to post, so I'm running with 3x1GB sticks. I've ordered new memory that should be here today; Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX.
The only problem I've encountered thus far is with one of my NVIDIA RAID arrays in "Degraded" status (mirror broken). This happened after I had applied the latest MS patches and a re-boot. I didn't suspect a HDD failure because the drives are new and the status of each drive was displaying as HEALTHY. I did my research on this site and discovered the solution which was to delete one of the two drives (I chose the one with the least amount of data) from the array and then added it back into the same array. The re-build took about 2 hours (they are 400GB Segate drives) and now it's working as advertised. I suspect a software problem caused this as one of the two drives was showing that it had less data (used) than the other drive.
My next steps are to install the new memory, test it with memtest86+ and then begin the OC ritual.

Hi Guys,
I've been having a problem with my machine where it will be working away as and then suddenly restart. I haven't been able to pin point the problem as it can happen regardless of applications or load thats on the machine. I've also run a couple of app's to check the RAM and its fine. The only thing I've been noticing is that the 4 cores of my Q6600 seem to be running a bit hot. On average on Idle there running between 45-55oc. Does this seem normal? I'm thinking that the cpu might be over heating when I'm running apps. I've seen one of the cores up around 68oc when under a bit of load. I'm using the stock heat sink at the moment and would like to cool things down it see if that helps. Can anyone recommend something suitable for my motherbroad.

My Q6600 (also G0/SLACR but don't know what you mean by "Pro") is OC'd to 3.4GHz and has had no problems running stable. However, may I suggest that you check into is your power supply, in particular the modular connections. I had the ToughPower 750W Modular before upgrading to PCP&C. I noticed that the ToughPower's modular connections had a tendency to be just a tad loose. They wouldn't dislodge but they had a little bit of play. I could jiggle them ever so slightly while they were connected. As a result, the CPU power cable (8-pin/4-pin) would cause a restart upon the slightest disturbance or sensation. I've since discovered that modular connectors also affect the efficiency, power noise levels, and overall performance of a PSU. All in all, I plan to avoid modular connectors entirely going forward. Many newer cases have excellent cable management features and even old-style cases can be cleaned up with a little planning and effort. So the modular cabling advantages don't offset the severe disadvantages. Even if your problem isn't due to the PSU, it's something I'd recommend considering replacing.

HELP! - Voltages for Overclocking Q9450 on the MSI P7N Diamond (780i chipset)

Hey. I fully understand the settings as far as frequencies go, but am a total voltage newb. No matter what I do I cant seem to get a stable vista load up with my voltage settings.
Please help me by providing suggested voltage settings for my hardware.
CPU - Intel Core2Quad Q9450
RAM - 6 gigs of DDR2-800 rated at 2.1V
VIDEO - Dual Nvidia Geforce 8800GT's in SLI
MOBO - MSI P7N Diamond, based off the Nvidia Nforce 780i SLI chipset
My cooling is sufficient, and I have the BIOS version 1.2
I also turned off all of the overclocking not friendly functions, example: spread spectrum, and DOT, ETC....
I am trying to run my CPU at 3.2 GHZ (400 mhz before multiplier)

Also, use cpu-z to check on your actual voltage and make sure you don't raise it beyond 1.3625 (I think that's right, it's 1.36something anyway)
Thanks for the tips. The reason I wanted to jump straight to FSB 1600 is because the MSI p7n is really picky and only likes 1:1 ratios.
My "sufficient cooling" is an aftermarket heatsink, high performance thermal paste, and MASSIVE airflow through my case. If you want specifics, its the Scythe Zipzang

6GBs smells like mixing modules... Or do you have 3 modules?
First of all, I already stated the frequencies that I wanted in the top post, and fairly clearly at that.
CPU shouldnt be too hard to figure out, as there are very few to choose from. I'll try to get back to you on that one
I have 5, 7200rpm SATA 3.0 drives. It sometimes runs with only 4, as one is a hot swap.
My ram IS mixed, unfortunately. I'm using 2x 1gig sticks, and 2x 2gig sticks. However, both sets have heatsinks, and are rated at 800mhz, 4-4-4-12, 2t, timings. (2.1v)
I AM running them in dual channel.
If this helps you suggest voltages please do, If not, then I will just have to start trying using nihilkrist's suggestions.

P7N Diamond New Install Failure

Hi,
Just got all my new hardware and I can't get vista 32 to install. I can do whatever I need in BIOS, but as soon as I go to install Vista Home Premium(OEM) It does the loading files thing, then it has the Green bar you get before the gui comes up, and then the computer restarts. So I never make it to the GUI.
Things I've tried:
matching my Mem to manufacturer specs of 4-4-4-12 at 2.1V.
Tried on 3 diff Brand new drives - one at a time and w/ all 3.
Going to one stick of mem and trying diff slots.
Tried the other stick the same way.
I've also tried RAID 5 which was my original plan w/ these 3 drives. When I do that it gets just as far as before, but then I get a Blue screen, STOP, the Error is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. And at the bottom it says nvraid.sys.
Any suggestions? Please help! I'm still using original BIOS 1.0

Update - still no luck. So I'm now running with Just one stick of mem.
Tried:
Moved my vid card to the second PCIE16 slot
Installed two diff IDE DVD drives to install from there instead of my Sata drive.
Heard about this as a possibility on diff forum.
Cleared the CMOS - but I didn't immediately do what Loonym suggested. Will try that next.
Tried loading Optimized Defaults, and Failsafe results - the Green bar lasts longer (8 times through) but still ends up going into continuous loop of reboot etc.
Next things to Try:

Memtest - how do I create Bootable CD from ISO?

MSI P7N Diamond Burnt Out!

Hi,
It's now been a good few weeks for me trying to set-up a new computer after having replaced the motherboard a couple of times and buying better power supply etc. But I've now got a new issue with this P7N Diamond and it's the second time it's happened (already RMA'd it once before with same issue). Each time it's happened I've only had the basic items connected, power supply, motherboard, graphics card, memory, cpu and fans.
Basically what happens is that the computer powers on for a few seconds but there is an immediate burning smell from the motherboard. When I removed the motherboard I found that a thin strip of copper around the under side edge of the board, almost directly below the bottom fan connector (SYSFAN4), has burnt away exposing the cooper itself and split. I've checked for anthing shorting the board in the case and all the case/motherboard screws are in the correct place.
When it first happened I thought maybe its the PSU (I used my older Antec 470W on the first RMA'd board) or a faulty board, so I upgraded to the Corsair PSU and got the board replaced, but its now happened again!
Obviously I don't want this happening again so any idea what would cause this?
Would it be the fan connected to SYSFAN4? It's a Scythe Fan rated at 0.26A and I think I had it connected both times when the board blew. If it was the Fan how would a board allow this type of thing to happen, should it not have built in protection to stop things burning out like this?

I have about five Scythe Fans and one Arctic Cooling CPU Fan. The AC CPU Fan was using the CPU Fan connector and the other four connectors had the Scythe fans attached. I just thought it had something to do with the #4 connector because the burn out was so near. The Scythe fans are 12v, could that be the reason?
Yeah I got the Striker II board now, but seem to be having the issue I original had with my first MSI P7N board with the Coolermaster PSU it just flashes on for split second and cuts out. I thought having this Corsair 750W PSU I wouldn't have that issue any more. As soon as I plug in my cheap gfx card it works fine! I just seem to have no luck at the moment. (Yes I've got the gfx power plug in )

This is from awhile ago, but may have some ideas & settings that may be of use for you. The OC seemed to work better with a 1:1 ratio. Ram speed of 825 - FSB of 1650 in my case. It would not run stable at RAM speed 1066. 412.5 would net about 3.506 or so for you. Hope this helps.

The way that Dropbox works is that it keeps a copy of all your files in your local Dropbox folder on your hard drive (which is, by default, directly under your home folder). Adding files to that folder will sync them to the Dropbox server.
You do of course have to download the Dropbox application to enable this (download link at the top right of http://dropbox.com ).

Msi p7n-diamond and coolermaster hyper48

Just wanted to know whether coolermaster CPU cooler Hyper48 will fit with msi p7n-diamond mobo with intel q6600.Will it work?

I can't answer specifically, but did purchase and install a Rosewill RCX-Z4 120mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler for my p7n board with an E8400 processor. I looked at that Coolermaster product but was a little concerned it wouldn't fit because of the heat pipes. I opted to use the Rosewill brand as it had a better form factor, and it vents out the top of my case.
My only complaint about the Rosewill is you can't get to the CPU power connectors on the board (8 pin) inside the case with the cooler attached. The fan assembly gets in the way.

It has been 27C here in Holland and my cores ran sometimes over ~61C for a couple of hours (lotta decoding/encoding done) and all is still working fine
Below 60C with a decent oc on air cooler,in summers is a nono as far as i know.
Unless like you, you like a lot of fans spinning at high speed ( must sound terrible ) to cool things down.

How does everything look as far as compatability? I know the MSI board has a 24-pin connector and so the power supply should mate up just fine. What I was concerned about was the power supply and dual graphics cards running in SLI. From what I understand, the Diamond Plus requires 450 Watts by itself but I am not too sure if the power supply would be enough to power the rest of the computer, especially dual graphic cards in SLI mode. Also, does anyone know how much room is left over on the slots after hooking up dual graphic cards, room for a 800 firewire and a sound card?
If I missed anything or if I am completely off-base with something please feel free to pipe in. Also if you have any suggestions in regards to cooling this thing down such as fans, RAM heat sinks, or anything else...again, please let me know.
This is my first build and I want this to go as smooth as possible.

Uhm, no crossfire. The graphic cards are Geforce.
So you guys are telling me a 520W single rail has enough power to support everything I listed better than a dual rail 680W power supply. I don't mean to annoy anyone here but I want to make sure before I order anything from Newegg.

MSI - P7N Diamond ESATA doesn't work under XP

I have 2 P7N Diamond motherboards and am running XP Pro/sp2.
I have never been able to get the esata ports to work. I have spent the last 4 months RMAing boards back and forth to MSI. I have tried at least 4 motherboards, 3 esata external drives, and 3 cables (all 6 feet).
Sometimes on the upper port (lower port doesn't work at all), the drives get detected in bios as gibberish. Other times it is listed correctly in post, but then I get a "9th slave hard disk error". I press F1 to resume, enter the bios, and the drive shows up. The drive never gets detected in windows, however.
In bios I have the Extra IDE/RAID Controller enabled and RAID mode is set to IDE.
In XP I have the JMP36X IDE Controller installed.
During all this time, MSI Tech Support has insisted that I am doing everything right. I called them last night and they mentioned doing an rma yet again, but when I called back today and talked to someone else, he told me that esata only works under vista in AHCI mode. He said that it won’t work under XP in IDE or AHCI mode.
Hope someone can help me!!

I did that when I installed XP.

Go to Start menu and select Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double click on System. In the System dialogue, choose the Advanced tab. Then click on Environmental Variables. Select Path and Edit. Put ;c:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin at the end of the Path (or c:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin;) at the start of the Path. That's it.
