MSI P965 Neo-F Sata & IDE presentation (& boot options)

hi,
I have purchased a MSI P965 Neo F motherboard.
http://www.msicomputer.co.uk/Product...3735&cat_id=77
I have flashed the bios to the lastest 1.18 revision.
If you look at this board, you'll find it has 5 SATA ports.
- 1 SATAII port by JMicron JMB361.
- 4 SATAII ports by ICH8.
Questions:
1.) The machine only appears to be able to boot from the 1 jmicron sata port.
2.) within the bios any disks plugged into the board on the other 4 ports show up as "ide" disks, this could be wording or this could be some cheap bus trick

Hi, thanks for responding,
Quote
no wrong with "ide", as SATA ports on ICH8 are detected as IDE devices, (as opposed to detected as SCSI device).
could you clarify this, I think its just the "no wrong" line, what do you mean by this.
Quote
No, the machine is able to boot from any JMicron port, including PATA port.
there is only 1 jmicron sata port, so my initial comment was aimed at you can only boot from this 1 sata port - not the other 4 ich8 ports, I assume thats correct from your comment.

  • MSI P965 Neo-F (MS-7235) problem booting from USB flash drive

    Hi, all!
I was wondering if someone can help me. I am trying to install Windows 7 x64 on my 320GB HDD that is connected to my MSI P965 Neo-F (MS-7235) mobo (The CPU is a Core2Duo 6600 with 6GB of RAM). I created a bootable USB 8GB flash drive using Microsoft's "Windows 7 DVD USB Download Tool" and bootsect.exe (Needed to create a boot sector on the USB drive) from the MS store. I successfully tested the resulting bootable USB drive using freeware MobaLiveCD (Sorry, you'll have to Google "mobalivecd" since this forum doesn't seem to allow external links) running under Windows XP SP3 x86 (32bit). Under MobaLive's QEMU, Windows 7 setup loaded its files and produced an error message basically saying that it could not install Windows 7 x64 under an x86 OS (No surprise there since QEMU is emulating a 32bit processor - The point is that the bootable USB drive I created works).
I then went into my mobo's CMOS and under Advanced BIOS Features -> Boot Sequence -> 1st Boot Device, set the value to "USB-HDD" and rebooted my machine. The USB drive probably was not detected by the mobo under that setting because it proceeded to boot from my HDD which is the 2nd Boot Device. I repeated the same process using each one of the  four USB ports in the rear of the mobo (I don't have the optional USB panel that the MSI users manual mentions) to no avail. I also tried setting the 1st Boot Device to "USB-FDD" and repeated the process for each USB port but the mobo still will not boot from the USB drive (It does not recognize it). When I set the 1st Boot Device to "USB-ZIP" and rebooted, the mobo hangs after "Verifying DMI Pool Data ..." which is no surprise since I am not using a USB ZIP drive but a USB flash drive. It appears that under that setting, it recognizes that there is a USB device attached but it is expecting a response (From a USB ZIP drive). I had no idea it would be this frustrating to boot from a USB flash drive! If anyone knows how to make this mobo boot from a USB flash drive, please let me know. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The P965 Neo motherboard is 8 years old, so don't expect miracles. .... You need to format the USB stick in the proper way. You may use this utility to do it: hxxp://www.prime-expert.com/flashboot/ Also, it's a good idea to use the first (USB0) connector (controlled by Intel ICH8) for the USB flash drive. Good luck.
Thank You for your fast response, RemusM!
I'm not looking for a miracle. I'm just looking for a mobo that does what it is supposed to do: Allow me to boot from a USB flash drive (I don't think that is too much to ask for even from a board that was made in 2006)!
Thanks for recommending FlashBoot. I see under their "Why FlashBoot" section that it "... does not shift to user the burden of choice between "USB-ZIP" and "USB-HDD" at format time and proper BIOS setup at boot time. ... and every USB disk is formatted in such way that it will work in every environment properly, regardless of current BIOS setting.", so I will give it a try and let you know about the results afterwards.

  • MSI P965 Neo-F Sata Ports Enhanced Mode

    Hi,
I have the MSI P965 Neo-F board, and need to setup the sata ports to AHCI or enhanced mode, but don't see this options as in previous MSI boards.
Some boards from anther's builders using the same chipset (ICH8) have these options.
Any Idea how to set this options ? any beta bios ?
    Thanks !!!

ICH8 has no RAID so P965 Neo only does RAID through the 3rd party JMicron controler.
Same problem here. It is not just about RAID but AHCI, for NCQ, but more importantly for ESATA hotplug.
2 years later still no BIOS it seems (I have most recent 1.11).  MSI still advertises with "enhanced AHCI" for this board even, (see bullet list under Intel® ICH8 Chipset):

  • [SOLVED!] DVDRW can't burn on JMicron IDE (MSI P965 Neo)

    -----------------------------
edit: i have solved it! i changed my IDE cable (i originally used the IDE cable that came with my dvd-drive, which was a 40pin IDE cable) with the 80pin IDE cable that came with the motherboard. installed jmicron driver, and i can burn now. no more errors from nero
I have an LG GSA-H10N DVD writer.
it's connected on the only IDE slot in MSI P965 Neo motherboard.
    Nero Express log file says:
    === Scsi-Device-Map ===
DiskPeripheral       : ST380811AS                       atapi Port 0 ID 0  DMA: On
    CdRomPeripheral      : HL-DT-STDVDRAM GSA-H10N JL10     JRAID Port 4 ID 0  DMA: Off
i asked around, DMA should be turned on, says all other forums.
Jmicron RAID controller is installed. all jmicron drivers installed.
    how to turn on DMA?
bios is set to IDE (and not RAID/Disabled).
please help. this is giving me headaches. i have lost money thinking i bought defective dvds to burn on, only to find out DMA is not ON (and i can't turn it on anywhere).

I wouldn't call this "solved" would you? Mabe patched...
Yes I am having the same problem:
If I use the Intel IDE drivers, you *can* burn, but it takes literally at least an hour MIN per DVD. Also it maxes out @ 6X for ripping audio CDs. Yes, and this cripples your entire system, everything is super slow, even the mouse is choppy. One of your CPU's will also be maxed out @ 100%. Sound may be also affected while using any DVD drive.
If I use the "latest" 1.14 JMicron Drivers, I can't burn at all. Windows "says" it's a DVDRW, but there is no burn tab under properties, and Nero or other applications say there is no burner (but the "virtual" ISO burner).   However, I can rip at full speed again, no choppy, so sound issues.
Here is a picture of what Device Manager looks like BEFORE you install JMicron Drivers and AFTER:
    http://www.hificomputers.net/hifi/Images/before_after.jpg
I Have tried messing with PIO modes and DMA in bios and windows. Nothing.
I have tried messing with DVD burner's firmware, nothing.
I have tried editing the registry and "forcing" windows to see the DVD Burner as a burner to FORCE the "burning" tab to come back, but still this doesn't affect anything. Still can't burn.
MSI do NOT use JCrapon again! Just search for jmicron in this forum and see all the problems with them! I've had at least 6 MSI boards and this is the first one I've not been satisfied with just because of JMicron.  I don't know if this is a Bios fixable issue, but it seems like it should be a JMicron Drivers issue.

  • Speed fan & MSI P965 Neo-F V2 ( F71882F sensor) Temp 3

Hi, I am using the following spec PC
    MSI P965 Neo-F V2
    2.2Ghz Core2duo
    2x1GB Ram
    320gb SATA HD
I have speed fan loaded, the temperature outputs are usually something like
    Temp1 31 - Case?
    Temp2 32 - CPU?
    Temp3 77 - mobo?
    HD0   36
    Core0 30
    Core1 30
    Graphics core 45
    ambient 0
The one i'm worried about is Temp3 77 degrees, Everest (trial version) reckons this is the mobo sensor. I can't find any other info on whether this is correct or not.
I can't find anything hot on the mobo at all, the heatsinks on the bridges (or whatever else they might be) are cool.
I'm a bit worried about this, the only thing that is strange is that the reading is 77 as soon as the mobo is on - so it's not taking time to get to that temperature.
    Anyone got any ideas? info?
    Regards
    Luke

I think is just some wrong reading, or ICH's own temperature, which 77 degree celsius is about the temperature ICH is.
Anyway, you should also refer to BIOS temp reading instead.

  • P965 Neo-F JMicron IDE concerns

I've always been a big MSI fan and I'd like to build a sytem with a core 2 duo and the P965 Neo-F.  However, I've really been scared away by all of the reported difficulties with the JMicron controller.  I will have one SATA hard drive and IDE opticals.  My question is, have issues with the controller been resolved?  Is it possible to get fast DVD read/write speeds with IDE opticals?  Is there a method to get things to work properly?  Thank you.
    DeeJay

    Hello,
I to have an MSI P965 Neo-F, from the day I had it and put my rig together I have had NOT one single problem with it at all, my dvdrw was set as master and plugged into the ide connector, my sata hard drive was plugged directly into the purple sata port. I DID NOT install any raid or scsi drivers whilst installing winxp, it installed with no input bar the product code and keyboard setup. I then installed all the drivers that came with the setup cd, which includes the Jmicron drivers. Both xp & drivers took about 25 mins. Once done everything was working fine NO problems or issues, no nothing, even after I updated the drivers using liveupdate still no issues at all.
I'v read that people have had trouble burning cds/dvds, low read speeds, etc... I didn't fiddle with anything in the bios prior to installing xp and I'v had no trouble whatso ever.
I think that this motherboard is tidy, it runs smoothly with no glitches, the overclocking I think is sweet enough without making major changes to your internal cooling. Reading all the bad reviews is enough to put anyone off, but not many people write reviews about how good this motherboard is, so here i am.
MSI P965 Neo-F is a dam fine motherboard. It works solidly and is one of the most stable MB's on the market. If people try not to fiddle too much with bios settings, that includes bets bios flashing, and everything before they set it up, then I think they would be more good reviews.

  • MSI P965 Neo board failure ?

I have the P965 Neo board running perfect for two years, for a few weeks ago the system didn't startup, a long beep sound came from the MB. I opened the case, checked connectors etc. and replaced the memory modules. After that the system runs ok, no problem occurs for almost three weeks.
For a few days ago, out of the blue,  the system didn't startup: error message: "WARNING Have option ROM can not be invoke (Vendor ID: 10Ech, Device ID:8167h)"
I reset the system and it passes the POST, the WINDOWS XP splash screen shows up but after a few seconds the blue progress bar stops.
I reset the system again and now the WINDOWS XP splash screen stays fade out, no progress bar
I reset the system several times, after a few times the system normally boots up and is ok.
I tested the HD with Speedfan Smart utility and it is found ok.  Also no virus etc is found. I checked the device manager, no driver problems.
Yesterday the system had the same problems (XP boot blue progress bar stops, sometimes the progress is very slow) but after a few restarts the system boots normal and is ok.
Tonight, after I had opened the case to measure the voltages, I startup the system but no problem occurs. The 12V and 5V are ok
I think I have a hardware problem but I'm doubt what hardware (MB,RAM,PSU,processor) causing this kind of problems.
    Can you help me ?
    thanks,
    Herman

Clear CMOS and try booting the system again.
Was the system like this from Day 1 or this only happens after something has been done?
    Thks NovJoe ....
The system had run without any problem for more than 2 years.
I presume I have a connection problem on the MOBO or other hardware. If I place the PC case in the cabinet under my desk, the problem occurs. If I have the PC on the floor there is not any problem. It also happens only when the PC is cold.
I asked my hardware supplier, he suggested to test the hardware with a special self booting hardware test CD. It will cost 40 euro. I searched for such a CD on internet but didn't find one special for MSI boards. Do you know where I can get such a CD ?

    Does anyone know a solution?

i using v1.9 now ... and i have problem with boot after hybernation with vista..
after turning my computer off (in vista is normal to hybernate and shut down) i can boot my computer .. by its very strange. So, power comes up, but then instantly comes Windows Vista with logon screen - NO posting by BIOS, no RAID initial screen, no scaning for hardware... it comes instantly to windows - but windows are in some inconsistent state and i cant login (freeze/BSOD ... but pointer can be moved by mouse and login button shows efect if i move pointer over - so windows are in memory and working) ... in this state is HDD led all time ON (shining) ... i can shut down and boot up again and everything is OK (windows are normaly restored from disk)
with older v1.5 BIOS ... my computer goes to same state like is described here - BLANK ... and BIOS setting was reseted

  • MSI P965 Neo-F + DDRII 800 TwinX (2x512mb) issue

Hi, ive recently built a new system a couple of days ago and im having a few issues with it... i 'presume' it may have something to do with ram/mobo compatability.
    Heres my system, no oc'ing:
    MSI P965 Neo-F
    1Gb (2X512Mb) Corsair TwinX DDR2 PC6400 (800) @ 5-5-5-18 1.85V (mobo default)
    480W power supply
The issue seems to be that during boot up the system loads into windows XP then after about 20-30 secs the system will reboot itself for no reason (no event log), then it kinda has a set of mini reboot fits during POST.
After the system has settled down it will boot into windows XP fine and i have no further issues at all... it runs all my games/apps perfectly.
Can anyone shed any more light on this issue ?

first, stop the board from auto-rebooting, by going to Control Panel , System Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, uncheck "Automatically restart". See what the bluescreen error code is. That would help a bit.

    Hi,
yes i do get the green message about the dvd in green color after the memory check(MSI logo)
    somthing like ODD0 DVD RW
I will try the second option you recommended, thx alot.
Hello, welcome to forum. if you are planing to update BIOS:
get P965 Neo BIOS ver. 1.6 CD Image (have modded boot record and integrate JMB361 Dos drivers.)
    How do i flash it?
Extract image file from archive, and burn it to CD.(example: open it with nero burning rom and burn image file to CD)
Make and ensure PC is stable, then reboot PC and boot from CD. you will need to confirm twice BIOS update when asked.
after BIOS update is complete successfully, power down your PC, remove power cord from the PSU, hit few time power button to drain electrify from capacitors, touch some metal with hands to discharge any ES which you may have, then open the case and Clear CMOS then pull back power cord, and turn on your PC, will be notice CMOS CHEKSUM MISMATCH/ERROR, hit F1 to continue to rebuild DMI Pool Data, then reboot your PC, and enter in BIOS and LOAD BIOS DEFAULT, SAVE AND EXIT, go back to BIOS and apply your customs settings.
if you want to use USB key to flash BIOS, copy AWFL865.EXE & W7235IMS.160 to USB drive, reboot PC and boot from bootable location, (hold "SHIFT" key when starting loading from bootable device to bypass startup files to avoid loading memory managers and other applications) navigate to folder which containt flash program and BIOS file and type from there:
    AWFL865.EXE W7235IMS.160 /cks/sn/py/cc/cd/cp/wb/ld/qi/f/e

    Hi
I've a MSI P965 Neo-F and i want to know what is the best DDR 2 Memory for this motherboard(G-Skill,Crucial or OCZ?).
Actually i' ve Corsair DDR 2 667 Mhz Value Select.

Actually Corsair does'nt work good with my PC(no boot sometimes) so i don't want Corsair...
I'm not saying buy Corsair, I am telling you to buy WINTEC AMPO  240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM 800. I have read all the horror stories about different ram and the Neo f. I installed 2gb [2x 1 gb] when i made the computer a couple years ago and just added the same thing 1 week ago and never a single problem. It still only reads as 3.25gb but that has been explained. Fast and stable memory with this board is hard to find, so trust me and buy this ram . it worked perfect for me so I don't see why it wouldn't work for you.

  • MSI P965 Neo PCI-e lock?

    Hi!
could any of you tell me whether or not the MSI P965 Neo-F board has an option to lock the PCI-e clock?
My plan is to tweak the FSB to 333 (which implicates a 333/266 = 25% overclock), which I've read is more then easy to obtain with a Core 2 Duo 6300. I just don't wanna ruin the rest of the system by getting a PCI-e busspeed of 125.
So I'm really curious if this board has either a build-in lock @ 100/101, or some option in the BIOS to lock the bus.
    Thanks!

well you could just try raising your fsb to 333Mhz and see what happens. done it with mine no problems at all no other tweeking either. lots n lots of people have done the same without a problem.
check out the overclocking and modding forum here, n see for yourself.

Hi I have the MSI P965 neo-f motherboard and I am interested in buying a new graphic card for my computer. Thanks for the reply. As far I can tell the card is backward compatible with PCI-E 1.0. I just wanted to ask if someone has actually used this card with my mobo to make sure that there are no compatibility issues.
