MSI R4870-MD1G Core Clock 600Mhz / 750 Mhz ??

Hi,
I have a couple of questions I hope you can help me about the MSI R4870-MD1G.
I purchased this card last march, and its been handling all the latest games with ease, and under normal conditions the Core temp runs pretty cool (around 49ºC/53ºC Idle) with average 40/50% duty cycle.
But, the memory temperature is quite high, inbetween 70ºC/ 72ºC idle all the way up to 79ºC/82ºC load.... and since we´ve hit the summer here in sunny Portugal, both core and memory are now a couple degrees higher, even got to 89ºC once a couple days ago. So last night I opened up Rivatuner 2.24 and created a faster fan speed profile to cool down the card.
While I was in Rivatuner, I noticed in Rivatuner Hardware Monitoring, that in idle (windows desktop) the Core Clock is oscillating between 600Mhz and 750Mhz every second. 1 second its 600Mhz, the next its 750Mhz (Memory Clock just stays the same at 900Mhz) ... while in load it stays at 750Mhz.
Is this behavior normal? A power saving mode or something?? If it isnt normal, how can I set it to stay at 750Mhz ?
Also, about the memory temperature... isn´t 70ºC idle and 82ºC load a bit high??
They dont have heatsinks, and I dont know, what is the max temperature these memory chips can handle??
Speeding up the fan to 100% duty doesn´t cool it more then just a couple degrees, I think the max I could cool it to was 68ºC.
Thanks for your assistance,

Yes its normal VGA changes clocks depend of needs.

problem is that im getting artifacts when i play games. There are some pixels and triangles all over the screen.
i think there is problem with heat in memory. when i exit game and check memory temp says it's 84 C and my fan speed is at 70%
i\'ve been using latest catalyst drivers but i\'ve also tried older catalyst drivers.

You can fix this by flashing the VGA BIOS using the LiveUpdate3 utility. I had the same problem as shown here:
After flashing the VGA BIOS, it looks like this:
If you still have LiveUpdate2 installed, you'll need to upgrade to LiveUpdate3 before continuing. You do that by contacting the LiveUpdate BIOS server via the LiveUpdate2 icon on your desktop and attempting run the flash program. You'll get a message then telling you to update to v3 first. After updating, run the flash program again but make sure that you disable your firewall first because it will interfere with the flash program.
Once the flash program finishes, the machine will reboot automatically. You may have to reboot a second time if you still can't access the MSI Clock Speed setting in Display Properties, or at least that's what I found to be necessary.

  • Core Clock Issue of MSI R7-260x 2GD5 OC

I just bought an MSI R7-260x 2GD5 OC.
In the official website, the core clock and memeory frequency are 1175 Mhz and 6500 Mhz respectively.
However, the figures shown in Afterburner are 1050 Mhz and 6000 Mhz (4*1500 Mhz).
Is it a defective product? Or it means I can always overclock the card to 1175 Mhz and 6500 Mhz ?
The driver is the latest version downloaded from AMD official site.
The version of AfterBurner is 2.3.1.

Looks like a R7-260X but clockrates justr match the non-oc R7-260X 1GD5. In some local markets there might also be a non-oc 2GB version. Add a pic of the box and retry with latest Afterburner version: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=161235.msg1277518#msg1277518

  • MSI GTX 660 TF 2GD5/OC (SLI) Running at 50% Core clock

    Hello there,
In my home setup, I have two MSI GTX 660 TF 2GD5/OC cards installed in my Mainboard (ASRock 970 Extreme4) in an SLI configuration (together with a bridge, of course). I would say that everything is running fine.
Though, with 3D mark, my core clock seems to be clocking in at 549 Mhz
    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/738108
While in the official specifications, 1098 seems the normal rate (hm, that is exactly 50% slower).
    http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N660-TF-2GD5-OC.html#/?div=Specification
I am using the latest (BETA) Nvidia Driver 326.41 driver.
I have the feeling something is off, and my 3Dmark is actually a lot lower then it should be, since installing the 2nd card, my performance with Rise of the Triad 2013 and Super Street Fighter AE seems to have dropped (I can barely play in 3D anymore, while I had no problem doing so with a single card, and according to the Nvidia site, SSFIVAE supports 3D and SLI).
Can you guys give me some pointers what might be the problem? Thanks in advance!

  • MSI GTX 275 Lightning Core Clock problems

    Gooday
I've had my MSI GTX 275 lightning Edition card now for about 1.5 years, when i play games the core clock runs at its full speed of 702 Mhz, then when im in Windows, its drops to 301 Mhz (understandable, 2 different modes 3d/2d, i think), but now when i play games and dont alt-tab or anything it runs @ 702, but the minute i alt-tab just to check something on the net i start getting problems, when i switch back to the game it switches smoothly and perfect, but 30 minutes sown the line the whole display freezes,(but the game sounds continue) then if alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del its runs it fine but from then on the card FORCES the core clock down to 400Mhz and i have to restart the pc to get to to normal. and it does that even more often if msiafterburner is running (but also when i uninstalled it)
Why would it do that?, the core doesnt get hot, i leave the fan on 100%(core temp=45-60'C)
    Extra info :
    Drivers=270.61 (same on 266, and 258)
same happens if i oc to 740
    psu is 600W Vantec (2x 22 amp 12V rail)
    Core i7 920 (no oc)
    7 GB Ram
    Windows 7 x64 SP1 ultimate

Sorry i forgot to add that to the first post, yep, re-installed windows, with/out SP1 with th different driver versions and also with/out or different gpu programs ie afterburner evga precision, riva tuner. The problem wasnt noticeable for about a year then lately it got worse and worse. I thought it was afterburner and the settings but without afterburner the game would only freeze much later on (few more hours) i saw (sorry cant say were exactly) that other users also had similar problems, where the game would get very choppy and windows would say "display driver stopped responding...) mine doesnt tell me that, the game would freeze and/or get a black screen and then few seconds later it would return but most of the time with the Forced down (400mhz) clock but windows didnt pick up display probs

  • MSI 6970 Lightning-Bouncing GPU Core clock in GPU-Z under load

    Hi,
When doing some stress testing with furmark, I noticed the GPU Core Clock would bounce around between 600mhz-940mhz under 99% GPU Load.  Is this normal??  I figured it would hold steady at 940mhz under load, not really sure why it's bouncing around.
    Thanks!

Figured it out.. had to change the Power Control settings in CCC to +20%... maintains 940MHZ now

  • Gpu core clock low msi e350ia-e45

I'm been running into a problem while bitcoin mining.
I noticed that when I moved my MSI e350ia-e45 setup into my computer room that the Mhash/s starts off at 11.2 then drops to 4.3 after a couple of minutes.
The previous room was about 66F ambient temps, the new room is about 75F.
I downloaded msi afterburner and noticed that when my Mhash/s drops, my gpu core clock speed drops to 200mhz from 492mhz.
This happens when the gpu hits 60c-61c.
I was running catalyst 11.6 and then tried 11.7 with the same problem still.
I've upgraded the bios to the latest 1.5 and still no fix.
I've tried disabling cool n quiet in the bios.
    I upgraded my case cooling.
I added thermal paste(which is why it changes in minutes rather than seconds now).
    Still no luck.
This is a little bit of a let down as I also own a C-50 based netbook that does not exhibit this behavior.  It will happily run at the 278mhz gpu core clockspeed past 80c.
The e350 is rated up to 90c so why would it underclock the gpu at 61c?
My friend has an asus e350 board and in my room it doesn't underclock the gpu.  His runs at a steady 78c in here.
I can only think that it is a bios issue.
    Any idea's?

I moved it back to the other room with the lower temps and the issues vanished.  Too bad it can't stay in that room(the ethernet connection to that room travels through the outside and is prone to killing switches/routers/ethernet cards during lightning storms.
I guess it's not much of an issue,  but the whole reason for buying an e350 was the higher gpu clock rate compared to the c-50.  It's kind of pointless if the gpu drops down to 200mhz when slightly heated.  It makes my c-50 netbook much faster than the msi e350 motherboard.
I love the  motherboard, and all it's features,  except for the clock problem.
I'm still hoping it's a software issue and not a bios issue.
I'll try installing an even earlier version of catalyst.
I will be installing linux to see if the problems persist.

  • Should i boost my memory clock when i boost my core clock? (gtx 970)

ive oced my msi 4g gtx 970 to 1400mhz, i have also boosted my memory clock to 1803mhz, what will boosting the memory clock do ? will it just increase fps and performance like increasing the core clock would.

I was able to OC my Gaming 970 350+MHz on the memory clock. I have to say that I have never owned a GPU that is as powerful as this one. I have owned an MSI TF 7950 Boost OC edition, a Gaming 760 in SLI and 3 way SLI with 2 EVGA 760s and recently upgraded to this awesome BEAST of a GPU at Christmas!!! I LOVE YOU MSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There seems to be a R9 290/X 2D Core Clock problem...

Right, a little background info; I am currently using my THIRD MSI 290X Lightning (Bought from Overclockers uk, First two were from Amazon.co.uk)
All three cards had random freeze/stalls or instant sudden reboots on tasks such as playing VLC, using Chrome, Catalyst (CCC) etc.
Upon upgrading my PSU and these problems still persisiting, I was very concerned and researched more and more. I found that alot of people are having trouble with this aswell on several different cards (Ranging from 260X to 290X, including the 290) several from different manufacturers too!
    The fix for me:
    - Solving VLC/Video Playback crashes (doesn't solve Youtube crashes): Disable "Enforce Smooth Video Playback" in CCC Global Video Quality settings.
EDIT: The above was no longer required after I changed the 2D Clocks... All VLC and youtube video playback work perfectly with the below fix/workaround...
    - Preventing Freezes/reboots on simple 2D Clock based tasks (e.g. GPU @ 300Mhz/idle)
To solve this one, GPU tweak was required to change the 2D core clock settings from 300Mhz to 600Mhz, I am quite annoyed at this as such expensive cards should not have weird niggles like this... could we reach out to MSI and AMD for this? :(
    I'd much rather a Driver/MSI BIOS fix...
PS. If I close GPU Tweak at any time, crashes soon follow (this is because the 2D core clocks are then allowed to go down to 300Mhz again) I really do not want to force a modded BIOS...

    Hi
Re: There seems to be a R9 290/X 2D Core Clock problem...
Yep same problem here, purchased an MSI 290 Gaming 1 month ago, amazing graphics card for the first 2 weeks whilst I played nothing but Bio Shock, BF4 and World of tanks.
Then then my daughters who are both into Minecraft wanted to use the computer, they play and watch You Tube at the same time. That's when the Blue Screens started. I have build a lot of PC in my time and starting researching on the forums. That's were I discovered the 3 issues with this card Blue and Black screens of death and Shockwave problems.
Don't get the Black Screen, so I followed the instructions and pretty sure I fixed the Video player problems, but not the issue you highlighted. Spoke to the supplier of the card last week and agreed to try several things before RMA. Went through various driver installation sequences, removed other hardware, checked Bios setting, followed various internet fixes that wouldn't damage the computer and swapped back to my old 5870 twice which work 100%. Nothing Worked, I have a 850watt PSU with 70A 12 volt rail, and the card works fine under load.
I agree this a 2d-3d switching problem, confirmed by World of Tanks works fine in 3d but BSOD when going back to menu, Marvel Super Heros same thing. Minecraft also crashes but not sure why. load game leave it sit there with no one playing, come back 10 minutes later. Computer has restarted.
Some one said to up the PCI Express frequency, tried this, seemed to work but had to reinstall windows 2 hours later. I also checked out setting customer profiles, but why should I?!!. One of the reason I bought this card was because of the low idle power consumptions in 2d. Plus I can't expect my 7 and 10 year old daughters to swap profiles around when they use my computer.
My Question is that given there are a lot of people having these problems. There are thousands of posts on the net, why is the only comment from AMD. A post from one of their forum administrators complaining that people are using bad language on their forums. To make matters worse this post is almost 12 months old and still no fix??? No wonder people are annoyed.
So I will politely ask you guys at MSI if you can shed some light on this.
I will be copying this post and pasting it into my RMA form later this week if I can't finger anything else out , I am just worried if it goes back they will just load test the card under 3d and send it back to me again. In this case it'll go on EBAY.

  • MSI 6600GT AGP standard clock speeds?

Ok, I got coolbits installed. Opening the tab for the first time, The "no overclocking" button is selected,  2D is selected along with core clock set at 300 and memory clock at 900. I DO NOT have the "apply these settings at startup" selected yet.
I cannot find anywhere in the owners manual what the standard core and memory clock settings are supposed to be for thing. Can anyone tell me?

Quote from: Trailryder on 14-February-05, 01:32:15
    Thanks Richard, I'll try those.
Ok, just a sec, the core is 500. The ram on it is DDR. When you say 1000 for the ram clock speed that means I actually set the clock speed to 500, right? Setting it to 1000, because of DDR, would actually make the speed 2000. Is this right? Or does the actual setting slider not take into account the DDR(2x)?
You set the number to 2 times the memory clock speed. If you bring down the menu to 3D, it should be 900Mhz which is the default for the MSI. If you were to overclock it you would set it to 1Ghz, which is 100Mhz higher. The MSI card should be able to handle that with no problems. The memory is rated for 1Ghz. Once your start going over 1Ghz your starting to really overclock the memory. Most of the MSI cards should be able to do at least 1.1Ghz.
I have had two MSI 6600GT cards. The first card could do 1.17 on the memory stable. The second card can do only around 1.14.

  • Gtx 970, Core Clock Spike Normal?

Is it normal for my gpu1 core clock to have small, consistent spikes?  http://i.imgur.com/8DcQxY7.png?1
I recently updated my drivers since some older drivers would make the fan in the msi gtx 970 4g have consistent spikes.  Looks like that's gone, but I'm not sure if this is normal for my core clock.
EDIT:  Derp... that's the fan tachometer, sorry.  Looks like it's still having the same problems.  Has anyone found a fix for this yet?  I know I can rollback to 344.16... I've been using that up until now, but I had to update to 344.75 in order to use Physx on High on Borderlands 2.  This sucks :(.

  • The core clock is slow or no core clock connected for this ILA or the ILA core may not meet timing.

[Labtools 27-1395] Unable to arm ILA 'hw_ila_1'. The core clock is slow or no core clock connected for this ILA or the ILA core may not meet timing.
I have seen related forums but cant get any help. My timing is completely fine. I tried all JTAG frequencies from 1.5MHZ to `12 MHZ. My clk for ILA core runs at 100 MHZ.
If i remove one IP , then the ILA core works.  THE BD is attached. If i remove the right most IP(HLS_croppin) it works. I really cant understand. There is nothign worng with the timin in either case.

There are four possible reasons for this problem:
    - The trigger condition is never met;
    - The trigger clock (clock mapped to the ILA Core) is stopped;
    - A known issue exists with the Storage Qualification feature;
    - BUFG is not being used on JTAG CLK (for the ICON).
The trigger condition is never met
Check the message at the bottom of the ChipScope Analyzer window. If it is similar to "Waiting for trigger, Sample buffer has 0 samples(0%)," proceed as follows:
    1. Go to "Trigger Setup" and "Trigger Immediate." If ChipScope Analyzer starts the acquisition and shows the samples (the waveform appears), your design is fine; the clock is running, but your trigger condition never occurs.
    2. In the "Trigger Setup windows, ensure that you have set the condition correctly if you are sure that this event (the trigger condition) happens in your design.
    The trigger clock is stopped
If the message at the bottom of the window is similar to "Waiting for Core to be armed, slow or stopped clock," the trigger condition is not the problem -- the ILA Core does not have a valid clock and is not able to start the acquisition. To fix this, ensure that you have mapped a valid clock (in ChipScope Inserter or ChipScope Generator). If you are not sure if the clock mapped to the ILA Core is running, try to connect your system clock instead (or a clock that you are sure is running).
BUFG is not used on ICON's JTAG clock
If the JTAG clock does not use a BUFG, the "Waiting for upload" message can appear.
In some instances, slowing down the cable speed might provide a suitable work-around.
