MSI R7870 2GD5T/OC i cant control fan

hi i buy radeon MSI R7870 2GD5T/OC,when i play games gpu fan speed is 35% and 3500 RPM+ 57 celsia max, trixx CCC and afterburner dont work, only in idle mode. any idea to fix ? or card is damaged? srry for my english,i am from czech republic.  same  problem  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165740.0

Sugggestion on other thread was rma. If you configured everything right for manual fan control with Afterburner (>>How to use MSI Afterburner<<) and that won't work the controller is properly indeed faulty.

  • MSI R7870 2GD5T/OC Uncontrollable/Loud Fan

    Hi,
Yesterday I purchased an R7870 2GD5T/OC from a local retailer. I installed it and everything seemed fine, until I started gaming. Under load, the fans spin up to 4000+ rpm, even though the temperature sits around 50-55 degrees. It's incredibly loud and I'm afraid of wearing the fans down quickly.
I tried using Afterburner and CCC to manually adjust the fan speed. This works when the card is idling; however under load the card ignores all settings and hits 4000+ rpm. And while the tachometer in Afterburner shows the card spinning at 4000+ rpm, the Fan speed still indicates it at 40% speed (or anything I change it to).
I have so far re-installed drivers (with drivesweeper), rolled back drivers, re-installed Afterburner, and tested the card in another system. The problem persists, and there seems to be nothing I can do. I also tried running an old 6850 on my system, which runs fine, so I'm sure the software is not an issue.
As suggested in another thread, the problem might be caused by something in the BIOS. I have already flashed the BIOS once, however the problem still exists.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Cheers,

And yes, I did try the card in another system, and the same problem occurred - The fan would speed up to full, and become uncontrollable under load.
I also tried a HD6850 in my current system, and it ran completely fine.
This is what Afterburner shows when the card is under load.

  • MSI R7870-2GD5T/OC problems with fans

    Greetings.
I just bought this card and got some problems with fans: when temperature of GPU rises above 52-55 degrees fans start spining at maximum speed.
Tried fix that using MSI afterburner/Catalyst control center - no effect, fan speed showed as I set up, but the tachometer shows 4400 rev / min, which is confirmed by the characteristic sound.
I hope that there is a fix for this beacause i cant RMA my videocard, I accidentaly lost the box, and since I paid 190€ i would like to have some support from MSI.
    Thanks.
Edit: Noticed now that here nobody work for MSI, well an help would be great anyway

the Original box doesn't matter if its gone as MSI don't like them in original box as they won't return the card in it.
as long as you have the original receipt from your purchase and the Graphics card your all good....
as for the problem your having it will be a leak current on a faulty safety catch diode (201) as they got a bad batch a while back that when it gets hot it opens the fan circuit to maximum as it thinks the card is overheating. (either remove it carefully (as long as you do not damage the card your warranty is still intact as the removal of that component is what MSI suggested when the issue first showed up) or RMA the card)

Fine by me. Now I alrdy have a genuine window and the problem still occur.
I already test both the hdmi and the dvi but the result still the same. still no signal or no video input. And I also test the desktop on other monitor and the result problem pointed at the graphic card.
And as stated in my previous topic, when I remove the graphic card can connect the monitor through the hdmi on the mother board it work fine.

as long as you take all the cables out one by one carfully without more then a few pounds of force with a slight wiggle as they come up its not that hard to do then take the whole PSU and the gpu to your friends house to see if it works
hell if you dont want to plumb the whole unit into his rig on the main 20/24 pin connector find the green cables pin and any neer by black ground cable and jump your psu with a paperclip in the wholes and just connected to your graphics card in his case and psu outside his case to only power your card and flip the power switch to turn it on quite easy (10 mins to do max)!

  • R7870-2GD5T/OC fan constant stop and start in idle

    Hello,
I have an R7870-2GD5T/OC and I have the following problem with it:
When the Windows7 turn off the screen after x minutes idle time, the VGA card cool off, and turn off the fans completely. However, 0,5 seconds after the turning off he realize the card is too hot, and turning back the fans. However, after 2 seconds he realize the card is cool off and turn off the fans completely. So on.
This continues until the computer goin' to sleep, or the screen turn back.
The problem is the noise. The spinning fans are ok, the stopped fans are ok too, but this constant stopping-starting make a noise like boyracers at the red sign, very annoying.
I installed the MSI softwares, first checked the firmware update, but there is no update for the firmware. I tried to set the fan speed with the Afterburner software, and set to manually to keep the fans in working even at minimum temperature, but is didn't help. When the screen turn off, the VGA card goin to mad.
There is any solution for this? (behind the workaround to never turn off the screen)
This is an Intel i5 config, with 64 bit windows7.
    Thank you.

As GPUs can operate at quite high temps, have you tried setting your min fan speed, i.e. where the fans stop spinning to be maintained up to 60C and only then start increasing the fan speed from there?
What kind of other ventilation have you got in your machine? Have you got a fan on the side panel that can blow onto the GPU?
Does your GPU not have a switch to toggle between normal and LN2 settings?
If all fails, ask MSI technical if they have a different VBIOS for your card that prevents the fans from stopping at all.

  • R7870-2GD5T/OC fan issue, help

Sorry it there is a similar topic, just bought the card the other day and noticed that when the temp rises above 55C the fan speed goes to 100% no mater what I define in Afterburner or CCC. I took it to the store where I bought it, and after couple of days they replaced it and as far as I can see it is the same situation, I cannot control fans no matter what I try. The guy in the store said that this is normal, just to get rid of me off course. Is there any way to control the fans, maybe a new bios which I cannot find anywhere. Someone please help

ask msi about it >>How to contact MSI.<<

  • Random freeze on boot with MSI R7870 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC PCIe

    Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my MSI R7870 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC PCIe graphics card. Sometimes, on boot (before getting to BIOS, I guess during GFX BIOS, if that's a thing anymore in the computing world) the GPU fans will spin at a considerable speed (noisy, I'd say 70-100%) and the system will refuse to boot. I could reproduce this around 5 to 6 times, and always during cold boots. After this happens, rebooting or powering off and on will not work, I'll need to cut off all power (PSU switch) and cold-boot again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Controlling fans with Core Center?

I feel such a fool, but I can't see any way of controlling fan speeds with MSI's Core Center?
The centre panel listss the CPU/NB temperature and fan speeds... if I click on the red arrow to the side of that, the extra panel that slides out simply gives me options on when the alarms should sound, based on either temperature or fan speed.
Am I meant to increase the fan speed by raising the minimum fan speed alarm threshold?  Not only is that a daft way of doing it, but it doesn't seem to have any effect...?

Quote from: petsoukos on 25-March-06, 21:16:41
Why isn't there a fan control for the NB Fan? The stupid thing runs at 7000rpm (according to CoreCenter) I need to control it coz not only it makes so much noise but it is also damaged making the noise 10 times louder and I have no time to RMA the board.
Please....I need to control it manually or I'm going to shut it down completely (ripping the freakin thing of the board).......
While I dunno about your mbrd, the NB fans on a couple of MSI mbrds I've played with are just not really speed controllable.  With Speedfan, I can reduce the speed but below 90% or so, the fan starts to stall and then oscillates between nearly stopped and its max speed.  I have mine, on a K8N Neo2 Plat set to max speed of 95% and min of 90%, which reduces the noise a touch.
If it's getting noisy and looking like failing, email MSI tech support and tell 'em it's failing and you're experiencing hangs and reboots.  I had two mbrds I reported like this, which were behaving badly, and they sent me 3 new heatsink/fans.  Those new fans run a bit slower, max of ~6Krpm, and are smoother running.  If you do this, it's a good idea to register the mbrd with them and then in your email, give the serial no and your postal address.  I had my new fans in a week or so, with no hassle or telephone calls at all.
