MSI R7950 voltage locked?

Hello everyone, I recently added a R7950 Boost Edition, one with a 6+8 pin board to my system for crossfire.
I was able to set core to 1000mhz and mem to 1575 at default voltage which is 949mv for my card. However, I was trying for 1100mhz core to match my other 7950.
Using Afterburner, it allows me to change the voltage to 1100mv, but what I'm seeing is a bit weird.
In the GPU voltage graph, I'll see spikes that go up to 1100mv when I sit there and watch it while in Windows.  When I test using Heaven or playing games, the voltage only goes up to 1.088 throughout the whole Heaven session even though I set the voltage to 1100mv.
Even when I leave the voltage at default 949mv, Heaven and games go up to 1.088.
I can't get the core past 1000mhz because the voltage never goes above 1.088 no matter what I set it at during games or Heaven and causes the apps to crash.  However like I said above, if I set my voltage to lets say 1200mv, I'll see single spikes in Afterburner go up to 1200mv.  During load, it never goes above 1.088mv.
I've tried all this in Crossfire and by using the MSI card alone, the voltage just wont budge :/
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know. Ask MSI: >>How to contact MSI.<<
There is nother vbios supporting more features than current vbios TV277MH.380 you provided. To have backup simply flash it on the bricked one. If you can boot your system with onboard/integrated gpu or you have an old spare vga for display boot with the R9 280x switched to the bricked vbios and flash the vbios with your saved one.
That's great. Do you a link to this other vbios please?

I purchased an MSI 280X Gaming OC GFX and would like to undervolt it
I read on forums to try this bios: techpowerup.com/vgabios/146769/msi-r9280x-3072-131009.html
which i did with ATIflash in DOS, i switched to position 2 on the small switch (switch left direction to back of case), it flashed and said successful but when i boot its just a black screen and no output
when i put the switch back to position 1 (switch right direction to front of case) it works fine with the original bios (015.042.000.003.000000 )
any ideas why i cant boot from switch position 2 with an older bios? is my card faulty?
    my card s/n is: 602-v277-44sb13121xxxx
my aim is to flash an older bios so i can get voltage control in After Burner

  • MSI R7950 TF 3GD5/OC BE too high stock voltage

Hi, this is my first post so please be gentle with me
I just bought a MSI R7950 TF 3GD5/OC BE video card which is 960mhz stock speed, but I found out that this card has a too high stock voltage which displays 1.18v in GPUZ and 1.25v in afterburner. I don't think the card can last long with such a high voltage so I want to lower it.
I try to adjust the voltage in afterburner, it seems it changes in the software (the slide did change). But GPUZ still displays the same voltage.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply.
I've found the solution for that. I downloaded the version 3.00beta9 of afterburner and now it can change the vcore.
I changed the vcore from 1.25 to 1.05v. Now the card is running at 1050mhz, 57degree with 60% fan speed, cool and quiet. Before was 75 degree and 80% fan speed.
    I'm satisfied now.
Ive got Afterburner 2.31, its allows undervolting as well. But problem is that in boost mode new values are ignored and back to default. So in that case cant see any sense in doing that. Is that changed in ver 3?

  • MSI R9 280X voltage locked!!!

Hi, I have crossfire MSI R9 280X's which I received recently. I am very disappointed that they are voltage locked, I am using the latest MSI Afterburner 3.0 beta 18. The slider for voltage is locked even though I have ticked "Unlock Voltage Control" and restarted my PC. I even tried "Force Constant Voltage" to no avail. This is very disappointing since I am using a high-end MSI card and it is voltage locked yet my old XFX HD 7850 had voltage control in MSI Afterburner......
Thank you for reading and I hope there is a solution.

I have made ticket to MSI support (shortly : no voltage change supported, but iam running -84mV )

  • MSI GTX 760 HAWK low overclocking/core voltage lock

Hello, I bought the gtx 760 hawk and i tried to overclock it, but it's overclocking potential is very low. Furthermore if I change core voltage +12mV in afterburner nothing changes. Voltage is still stuck at 1.200. There's absolutely no difference. I use ver. 3.0.0 beta 14 of afterburner. Please help.

    Base Clock 980
    Boost Clock 1033
    MSI N760 Hawk
    Base Clock 1111
    Boost Clock 1176
That is what the card is guaranteed to prvide you with.
Additionally, MSI provides voltage and clock adjustments to allow users to potentially OC it even more (no guarantee). Each individual sample will yield different results. We have users that had to RMA cards because they were unstable even at the guaranteed OC'ed speeds.

No that doesn't help. We only need the S/N without the last four digits. Only those are individual. The rest just stands for the model, the batch and the date of manufacturing.
Hi my card voltage locked too serial without last 4 digits is 602-V277-28SB131107 card is r9-280x gaming bf4 edition and i uploded bios here http://turbobit.net/zkiohc83yw8v.html

There is no overclocking app more recent than Afterburner. What doesn't work with Afterburner most likely doesn't with any other tool. Either new batches of the R9 280X are not supported yet or these are locked and can't be overvolted at all. As nothing helps to unlock the card and MSI says it is not supported there is possibly no way. Simply tell MSi that you are not satisfied with the answer and that you want to know if support will be added later on or if there is a technical limitation.
Thanks for all informations i asked their answer ''Hi, the new R9 280X,the afterburner does not support the voltage. I had been reflect to our company, please patience to wait for  a future version of Afterburner. Thanks! ''
The only thing to do is waiting after this answer.I hope they will do it soon.

  • R9 280x voltage locked

Ok so my first card I was able to get the core voltage past 1.2, now I had to RMA my first card since a fan blade broke  . So with the new card I received I cant get past 1.2 volts for core voltage. I am using msi afterburner beta17 to OC/volt tweak. My current bios version is 015.040.000.000.003435. With my old card I was able to hit 1180/1800 with voltage tweak now I cant even get 1160/1700 stable. ASIC is 71.8% if it matters. I'm really tempted to just say F*** it and switch over to a nvidia.

Its not voltage locked. I just think it's an issue with afterburner. Force constant voltage, it will work. Or use TrixX, if you dont want to force constant 3D volts.
OK so I spent a few hours trying to get this to work. I DL'd trixxx and modded trixx. These were able to tweak my voltage to my desire but I hate using them. Good news tho, my card voltage isn't locked =). So I tried the constant voltage on AB, which for whatever reason worked. I don't know about you guys but I really dislike having that constant voltage checked. So I uninstalled everything GPU related and reinstalled AB17 and amd drivers. After all that i'm finally able to change the volts in AB!! I had a really early version of AB17 i'm thinking that was the cause of it.?

  • MSI Afterburner - MSI 7850 Voltage Control

When will afterburner support voltage control for this card? We're able to unlock voltage control in options but still not able to change the voltage control in afterburner. Other mis 7970 cards can use it fine, not this msi 7850 though.

    Hi again
I have been doing some further testing today, using the AMD Catalyst drivers v12.8 and MSI Afterburner v2.2.3.
THE MSI R7850 Power Edition 2GD5 card appears to have two GPU core VDDC voltage states as standard, 0.82v for 2D clocks and 1.21v for 3D clocks.
I have confirmed this using GPU-Z v0.6.4 (managed to get it to display current VDDC correctly at last) and AIDA64. For some reason , Afterburner lets it appear that you are changing the VDDC voltage (once the unlock voltage options are ticked in settings).  Afterburner shows a core default VDDC of 1075mv when first installed which doesn't tally with what is actually the current 3D clock VDDC voltage of 1.21v. Even sliding this to 1.1v or 1.3v (the maximum) has no effect on the VDDC or 1.21v. The Afterburner OSD will always display what the voltage is set to on its own slider,  even if sensor output still shows the actual 1.21v.
Now, this is where it gets interesting. I installed the Sapphire Trixx application which as you probably know, is similar to Afterburner. Right at the start, it was displaying the adjustable core VDDC voltage as 1.21v although the slider would only let me decrease the voltage. I believe that this is due to Trixx having  a VDDC limit of 1.18v.  To test Trixx, I reduced the core VDDC to 1.1v. This core voltage adjustment was successfully reflected in MSI Kombustor, AIDA 64, GPU-Z when running 3D..
Strangely, this means that the Trixx application will let me adjust the volatge on MSI Power Edition  GPU core, albeit only to down volt from 1.21v where as the MSI Afterburner app does not adjust  the core voltage at all, despite the fact  that on the surface, it appears to work, letting you select core voltage 0.82v all the way to 1.3v. The 7850 states that it is triple overvoltage enchanced but Afterburner will not bypass the hard coded MSI BIOS voltages.

  • MSI R7950 Twin Frozr III Temp Issues

I have been having issues with my video card (MSI R7950 Twin Frozr III) under load and previously even while  idle with temperatures being way higher than they should be. Browsed many forums and it was suggested that I change the thermal paste, which fixed part of the issue (The video card under "normal" load went from 95C to 75-84C while at 90 to 100% load the temperatures rises back up to the 90s). Before changing the thermal paste, the idle temperatures were around 60, under regular load a little over 90 as stated previously.
The video card runs perfectly otherwise which has me thinking it's most likely a problem related to the heatsink and cooler itself.
I'd personally rather avoid RMA if possible so my question is, is it possible for a cooler/heatsink to cause such a high temperature issue and if so, would purchasing an aftermarket cooler fix the problem or could there be other issues leading to the high temperatures other than the cooler/heatsink itself?
    Thank you for your time.
In case this is relevant in any way:

    Catalyst 12.4

After flashing to this vbios, I seem to have gained performance, but the card also seems to be running a bit more hot which could be affected by me being in a different area in the game or slightly higher temperature in my room around the computer, etc.
I haven't tried changing drivers lately, had before when I first was faced with this temperature problem (Have been busy for a while and never bothered trying to figure the issue or try reapplying thermal paste to see if it would fix it until I got time for it recently). I tried both AMD's official drivers, the drivers I had at the time for my 4890 as well and the MSI auto-update software, none of which seemed to fix the heat problem.
If you believe I should try drivers now and see if it can fix the problem once again I don't mind trying.

I just received two R9 280X GAMING cards from Newegg and am disappointed to see that they are both voltage locked out of the box (at 1.20). Both the manual and website for these cards talk about using Afterburner to adjust core voltage.
Will flashing a new bios onto them help?
    Here are the serial numbers:

This card is not locked. Read this thread #4729320 at Guru3D forums and reply by Unwinder (AB developer). I'm not allowed to post direct links so you would have to find it.
Are you sure you got the thread number right?
Trying to open such thread yields "No Thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator"
    NVM, found it.

The 7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5 uses a custom board design (besides better quality) made for more oc ability. Therefor it is able to consume more power than a reference board only having 2 x 6 Pin
    The PEG Slot will allow up to 75 W power consumption while a PCIe 6-Pin will add up to 75 W. So reference board with 2 x 6 pin will be a allowed to consume 225 W power in total (75 W + 2 x 75 W)
An 8-pin PCIe will allow 150 W power consumption what allows up to 300 W in total of power consumption resulting in more headroom for oc on your card.
Yup correct, just remember to add other hardwares like 2500K with 95watt TDP, HDD, Optical Drive and other minor parts like fans

  • MSI R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5 V2 or V2/OC?

I just bought a MSI R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5  V2/OC. That should have a standard core speed of 880Hz Now when I look in "AMD Vision control center -> Information -> hardware"
    Then I see that my core speed is 800Mhz it should be 880Mhz. Do I have a V2 or a V2/OC? serial:602-V277-06SB1210136267
