MSI r7970 lighting temps

Hello,
Just bought the MSI R7970 lightning.  I have not overclocked it or any thing.  I ran "Medal Of Honor Warfighter" on ultra and my temps were getting like 90 degrees.  I setup a custom fan curve with afterburner.  Is this normal for this card?
Thanks for the help.

ok, How would I check the bio to see if the bio is reading wrong?
You can't check if hardware readouts are correct. Besides there aren't any reaout problems known for that model. Test with MSI Afterburner and Kombustor (>>How to use MSI Afterburner<<) if temps would exceed 90°C and GPU thottles or shutdown.
Also with MSI Afterburner and it's OSD you can check if black screens or other ingame issues are related to overheating in that situation.

  • Really need help with MSI R7970-2PMD3GD5/OC:(

    Greetings to all,
I really need help with my brand new MSI R7970-2PMD3GD5/OC. I've purchased it two days ago and I didn't really have time to test the card until yesterday. The card is I think way to hot for my "liking". It idles at 56c-60c, at full load in Heaven benchmark 3.0 in 1920x1080, extreme tessellation and 8xAA card reaches 95c-97c. Stock cloacks are 1010Mhz/1375Mhz and stock voltage is 1,174v. Case is being cooled by two Noctua NF-P12 fans. Also I tried lowering the voltage and "underclocking" the card to a standard 925Mhz in small increments, but it doesn't help at all. Each and every time it results in BSOD and dx dll errors and complete system failures. Replacing the card wouldn't be a problem if I lived in a "normal" country that has access to a steady supply. Retailer that sold me a card told me that only 5 cards total have been imported from the launch day and told me that i bought the "last" card in my country. They could order a replacement but it would take them more then a month to do so.:( Ohhh and one more thing I don't overclock, everything in my case is at their default values.
Recently, I read that "Amd released" a bios update for a standard reference boards that turns them into a "GHZ editions". Also lot of users report a lower voltage requirements and lower temps with that "boost bios". As I understand this card pcb is not Amd's reference board design, I could be wrong it's not that uncommon.. So I didn't want to risk warranty by flashing it to a position 1. Will MSI release the boost bios for this model of card? I am humbly asking MSI staff on how to proceed regarding this problem. I would be immensely grateful for any help you could provide.

what PC case you use exactly?
have you tried to open PC case side door and to retest?
    Hi,
it's open case. If i close it the temps get even worse:(
They get better for other components, but not for gpu. Two Noctua NF-P12's are cooling the case, first one is positioned above gpu, left side next to cpu. Other is right beneath the gpu, right side of case. Just under the hdd section of the case. I tested each and every component with my backup card nv 8500gt. They function within the specified parameters. I'm getting somewhat worried.

  • 6970 lighting temps

    Hi Guys,
     These are my specs:
    MSI R6970 Lighting
    CPU 975 Extreme w/    ASETEK 510LC 120MM WATERCOOLER
    PSU Cosair 1000W
64g ssd SATA- 3 crucial for OS
120G ssd SATA -3 Crucial for Gaming
    1.5TB SATA-II general storage
    6G of memory
    27" Monitor 1920X1080  60hz
It seems lately my temps at desktop are 38c and in game from 60c to 70c, fan speed 60%. When I first got the 6970 temps were 32c and in game 48c, fan speed 60%. the games are BFBC2, BF3 and MOH. The other night my game froze and when I went and checked my temps at desktop after about 4minutes and they were about 50c with the game closed and i was at my desktop. That night when I went back in to play again (MOH) it happen again, my settings in game were auto - Ultra, the drivers were 12.10 that I have had in since they came out.  Now I know that the temps are within the limits of the card but is this the tell tale signs that the card is going? I have not messed with the core or memory clocks they are core clock 940 and the memory clock 1375.  I have rolled back my drivers and at desktop they are 38c, writing this post they are at 45c. What gives?   Thanks

Try removing the drivers from safe mode with >>Driver Fusion<<
    Then re-install and re-test.
Also, try blowing out the card with compressed air and re-seating it in the pcie slot.
If that doesn't help, try testing the card in another computer.

Well, asking for a vbios it wasn't obvious that you are trying with Afterburner and didn't know even how to enable voltage control. You could have found out by reading sticky topics too:
    >>How to use MSI Afterburner<<

Overvolting with the overvolting slider will work the same way what means what you set will be added to the stock voltage. Note that overvolting gpu on Kepler (GTX600) is limited on non unlocked cards (Lightning/Hawk) to the nvidia max of 1.175v and setting anything else will therefor be useless.
If overvolting is greyed out and can't be changed you have to activate it in "Settings"/"General".
Simply check "Unlock voltage control" and "Unlock voltage monitoring"

    Dennis Msi thanks for reply.
U said  i bouht one non Oc card, but on the sellers sites and MSi site there is no information about non Oc card at 880 mhz.I see nowhere one MSi lighting clocked at 880.If i clocked my card at 940 mhz, and put voltage at 1750  ,in every video aplication that card falling.Maybe i need wait for one bios update or what ?
It looks like you are correct that the MSI website does not show the non-OC clockspeeds for the R6970 Lightning, I'll report this right away!
Also, Voltage at 1750 seems really high, are you sure this is correct?

  • MSI R7970 Lightning BE - OVERHEATING PROBLEM !!

Hi my name is Nick and I am from Greece and new in this forum . I recently bought an MSI Radeon 7970 Lightning BE from a reseller from ebay , the product came to me after 3 weeks and then I started testing, note that this card is used in a crossfire configuration , the second card is an ASUS HD 7970 DC2T , so I opened Furmark and I so that after 3 minutes that the Msi 7970 lightning was about 94 degress  and the Asus hd 7970 was 74 degress and stable , I ran several tests because as I read on the Internet MSI doesn't recognise Furmark as a Benchmark Program , I used 3DMark 11 ,3DMark Vantage with no luck , always  the MSI was overheating.
Then I read in this foum a guy with a similar problem with mine , and what he did was to reapply thermal paste and the problem was gone. I saw this and bought the best thermal best that I could found (GELID GC EXTREME) and today I reapplied it , unfortunately nothing changed , I ran 3DMark 11 ,furmark , Crysis 3 and now it showed me artifacts (MSI Video Card at stock clocks).
I don't know what to do I know that the warranty is no use anymore as I opened and remove the cooler but what else could I do .
    My PC Specs :
CPU : Intel Core i7 2700K (Overclockred at 4,4 Ghz)
    Motherboard : Gigabyte GA -Z68X - UD7 -B3
    RAM : 32 GB ( 2 x 8 GB G.Skill ARES @ 1600 Mhz)
    Case : Coolermaster HAF X (with 7 case fans - 3 Noctuas)
SSD : Intel 520 Series SSD 240 Gb
    HDD : 2 x WD Caviar Black 2 TB
Sound Card : ASUS xonar Essence ST
    CPU Cooler : Noctua NH-D14
    VGA CARD 1 : MSI R7970 Lightning BE ( Stock Clocks : Core : 1150 Mhz , Memory : 1500 Mhz)
    VGA CARD 2 : ASUS HD 7970 DC2T (Overclocked to reach the MSI , Core : 1125 Mhz , Memory : 1500 Mhz)
PSU : Thermaltake Toughpower XT 875 Watt (80+ Bronze)
Please someone help me I don't know what to do , please note that I have installed all the latest drivers (AMD Catalyst 13.4) and everything as fa as software I think is fine.

Case solved  , I putted the ASUS 7970 DC2T in the top PCI Express x16_1  and the MSI R7970 Lightning BE at the bottom PCI Exprees x8_2  , I lost some perfromance (about 3 -5 fps) because of the bandwith , but now when I play crysis 3 the temperatures have a big improvement , the msi stays stable at 55 -58 degrees and the asus is 67 -70 degrees , about 10 degrees hotter (in a crossfire the top card heats more , thats true afterall) .
;-))To achieve this low temperature at msi 7970 I also set manual fan profile at msi afterburner at that's it ,also note that I have 2 noctuas 14 cm fans to blow fresh air in front of each card.

  • MSI R7970 Lightning BE // Underperforming

I recently bought an MSI R7970 Lightning BE for my new pc which is an Intel 3770k on a z77 Asus Sabertooth motherboard.. I'm using a 750watt power supply on a single 12v rail.. This card does high FPS but where it is failing me is mouse movement. If you walk back/fowards/left/right the gfx card is a champ, but if you're moving forward while moving the mouse everything stutters. I've tried MSI's drivers as well as newer non-msi drivers and they all pretty much yield the same result.. The major issue I have is the same issue persists on the lowest graphics settings 800x600 with all effects off or the highest graphics settings... What sort of stuff should I be looking for to rectify an issue like this?  This is truly driving me mad having just spent $500 dollars on a video card, I am pretty sure this video card should be destroying graphics.

I've tried 5 different mice... razer naga(wired), old school dell usb mouse with ball(wired), logitech(wireless), wireless microsoft mouse 5000(wireless) x2. I have a logitech g600 coming in the mail in a few days and i've tried different keyboards.
I've tried the msi driver disc that came with the product, also the newest msi drivers posted online the msi website as well as different versions of catalyst v12 and different versions of catalyst versions 13: 13.1, 13.2 and 13.3. Some perform better than others but none perform optimally as they should. VSync helps with screen tearing but not the sort of issue i'm seeing.. I've tried LN1 bios switch and LN2 bios switch which dont yield much of a difference.. I will upload several videos with FRAPS if you would like.. It seems to capture the problem the best. I'm using a NZXT HALE82N 750 watt power supply and i've done mannnnnny fresh os installs and bios tweaks.. even switched mobos from sabertooth z77 to a p8z77 pro and back to a different z77 sabertooth board.. tried hz limiters and fps syncing software(dxtory, radeon pro, msi afterburner, ccc, trixxx, iTurbo). I dont think this card should perform this way with stock settings for mobo/proc/gpu.. Nobody would go through the hell i'm going through to get video games to play on this card. ;/ After 3 weeks of trying various options i've started trying benchmarking software like unigine heaven, kombustor, 3d mark 11, performance test and even furmark.. I can see the same issue in heaven/3dmark11 and as well as furmark. in furmark with the fan set nominal @ 100% the card goes to 98 degrees celcius in 20 seconds(is this normal?).. Games I see issues in is new Tombraider, Bioshock Infinite, Skyrim(this card should destroy) and BF3(this card is known to destroy). the issue doesn't exist if walking forwards, backwards or strafing left or right... it only shows up when walking forwards or backwards while strafing left or right while panning the camera with the mouse.. same issue on lowest graphical settings @ 800x600 or highest graphical settings in 1920x1080.

  • MSI R7970 Lightning BE Flickering

I've been having some problems with screen flickering and the only way to fix this problem was to set the amount of idle clocks of the *GPU and Memory to the Max.
    *MSI R7970 Lightning BE
    *Bios 015.022.000.001.000000
    *GPU Core Clock 1150 (always)
    *GPU Memory Clock 1500 (always)
    *Voltage 1.256
    *Temperature 50°C Idle 77°C Load
    *Fan Speed 50%
    *Catalyst 13.2 Beta 5
Can I have some problem in the future with this change?
And I ask, is there any other way to fix this problem without having to change the clocks, maybe with some new Catalyst or GPU Bios?
Several people are having this same problem with this video card, this solution can help us, but I hope it can be fixed without any change in the clocks...

YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH,  i have the same everything you have as a video card.
i hope were not stuck and the new bios or Driver from Amd, and it will Fix it now.

  • Msi 8800gt zalman temp problem

    Hello
i got my new card yesterday but had a serious temp problem,
    My setup is as follows:
    msi kn9 diamond (mobo)
    ozc pc6400 2gig (mem)
    msi 8800gt zalman (GFX)
    5600+ amd (CPU)
    GFX mem temp: 65c
    GFX GPU temp: 73c
I took it down my brothers so i could try it in his, just in case i had an issue with my comp,
Had the same results as me but like me he said the fins on the cooler wernt hot enough to be that temp,
We took the zalman cooler of and you know the plastic protective film used to protect the heatsinkl surface,
IT WAS STILL ON, Yes the plastic film was still in place, with thermal paste all over it,
so obviously removed it, put more paste on and now its idle at 38c and load is 50c
    What more can i say!!!!!

YOU MAY HAVE CLOGGED THE ZALMAN 8800GT, HOW IS THE WATER FLOW? MINES GOT CLOGED, I OPENED MY ZALMAN 8800GTS AND THERE, PIECES OF SMALL LIKE GELLY TRAPPED INSIDE, YEP. YOU HAVE TO OPEN THE ZALMAN AND CHECK IT OUT...OR GET  A NICE PRESSUE AND BLOW IT ALL OFF. MINES NOW IDLE 45 AND PEAK TO 55 ON CRYSIS.

Hi, i was just wondering if there was a pre-modded / tested bios available that enables temp monitoring in MSI's 6600GT VTD-128. I didn't think i could hex it myself so i just wanted to know if anyone had success doing it.
    Thanks,

Hi you could check those sites like this :  Enabling Temperature Monitoring on the nVidia 6600GT
but I wont recommend you to do that if you are don't know a lot about computers and updating/editing bios.

  • MSI 670 PE temp/noise problems

    Hi all,
I recently bought this card and although I'm very impressed with the gaming performance, I don't think the thermal/aural performance matches!  On demanding games like Metro LL and SC Blacklist it regularly goes to 85℃ or above and the fans sound like a banshee!  I bought this card because of the reviews saying how cool and quiet it was under load, so do you guys think there's something wrong and I need to RMA?  My room temp is 16-20 and idle is 28-29℃.
    Many thanks,
    Diym

I've been comparing different software against the BIOS and MSI Command center i think it goes like this
    TMPIN0 = CPU
    TMPIN1 = NB
    TMPIN2= SYSTEM/MOBO
After gaming for a few hours last night i decided to do the good old fashion touch test and found the back of the mobo behind the CPU was warm but nothing major, same with the actual CPU, the NB heat sink however was hot to touch and the TMPIN1 was at 68c, so i am thinking that this has to be the higher reading right? as it was the only thing on the bored that felt anywhere near 68c.
That could very well be correct. The problem is that they tend to change between various motherboards. I took the most common patterns I was seeing in posts relating to it.
Personally, if the CPU isn't getting incredibly hot, I wouldn't worry about it too much. The northbridge is always under stress due to the architecture, and it's not surprising that it would be running quite a bit warmer than the CPU.
They were made to handle heat that high, and since even under a heavy CPU load, the northbridge won't change that much, I wouldn't worry about that too much. If you are worried, you can always look into trying to provide more cooling to that area of the board via a directed fan right at that heatsink (if there isn't one already).
