MSI R9 280 Gaming 3G won't boost - stuck at 827mhz

Hi all, I used DDU to remove my Nvidia driver in safe mode, I then fitted the 280 and booted into windows and installed the latest AMD 14.9 WHQL driver.
I tested the card in Unigine Heaven as I do with all new cards, using MSI Afterburner for monitoring.
The card boosted initially, ran at normal temps and didn't experience issues, I played Bioshock infinite for a while and then went back to the desktop.
Next app I launch, the card clock is stuck at 827mhz and won't budge, adjusting clocks in MSI afterburner does nothing, the fan control works but that's it.
I have re installed the drivers multiple times with complete removal each time to no avail, occasionally the card will boost after booting up, but within a few minutes it will revert to 827mhz and refuse to budge.
My specs below
Intel 3570K
ASUS P8Z77-V Pro
8GB Vengeance 1600mhz
Seagate Barracuda 1TB
MSI R9 280 Gaming 3G
Windows 7 x64
Corsair AX750 PSU
Any help appreciated, trying to work out if this is a software or hardware issue, I downloaded MSI Live Update and it reports that the card's BIOS is the latest version, as are all my other drivers.

In what games does the card not boost? Temps under load? GPU usage in %?
Try running Unigine valley Benchmark in Extreme HD: https://unigine.com/products/valley/download/

  • [Request] MSI R9 280 Gaming BIOS

I'm getting some artifacts and random freezes since installing this card.  Temps are relatively cool, I keep the fans at about 90%.  I've wiped and reinstalled the drivers properly and have disabled and uninstalled my APU graphics.  I have also disabled CPU parking.  My only question is that there are two power sockets on the card.  An 8 pin and 6 pin.  I have one rail coming from the PSU with both connectors on it and have them both plugged into the card.  Do I need to plug one rail into one socket and another rail into the other socket?  Thanks.
Also, is it ok to run "dual graphics" in the bios?  As in, enable and install the drivers for my A10 APU AND run this card at the same time?  I know they won't "cross-fire" but I'm just talking about enabling them both and using the card.

Thank you.  Yes it ran fine for 2 weeks with just the APU before I ordered the graphics card.  I talked to MSI tech support.  I will try a spare card I have and see what the results are.  If it points to the card I will RMA it I suppose.  I was surprised as to MSI's 3 year warranty.  That makes me confident the problem will be fixed one way or the other.

  • I want to buy the MSI R9 280 GAMING 3G this weekend but

Why are guys asking for new BIOS right and left ? It isn't only with this brand either. Why is this necessary, to ask, I mean. Doesn't MSI have the latest BIOS for download and I never recall needing a BIOS update on a graphics card before.

It's because the card is being produced e.g. 4 months ago and you buy it now, so since then there might have been released new vBIOS for the card, or the person is having issues (e.g. flickering) with their new motherboard which was produced 1 month ago.

Choose what you like. Both are H87 boards hence no cpu oc possible anyway. VGA boost is not really worth buying a board for. The Gaming board features other extras like Killer LAN and enhanced onboard sound.

3.) If we need to check if thier is a more recent version. We can check your Vbios in one of two ways.
A.) Upload a copy of your current vbios somewhere and give us a link. You can save a copy of your vbios using >>GPU-Z<<.
B.) You can also just use NVFLASH >>Download NVFLASH for windows<<
    Syntax:
    nvflash /v >rep.txt [ENTER]
This will copy all of the information we need into a txt file you will fine in the folder in which you placed nvflash.
4.) Be aware that gpu-z screenshots or what gpu-z reads out as bios version are NOT of any use for identifying the required vbios version. While it doesn't hurt to add those when S/N and an actual copy of the vbios are also supplied simply just adding screenshots or version readouts will not get you any further and us having to ask for the required informations.

  • MSI GE70 Doesn't Boost, Stuck at 745 Mhz (650m gpu)

hello, i bought my laptop yesterday and i figured out a strange thing. my gpu won't go above 745 Mhz even if i play games(dota2, bf3). as far as i know it should boost to 830Mhz. i google'd it and found out that some dell owners had that aswell and a bios update for dell solved that. is there any msi bios updates on the way? or is there any other solutions for my problem?
    here is a quick summary of what i did so far: after i found out that i have a problem, i ran some oc softwares to boost it manually;
-msi afterburner: didnt work at all, gpu clock stuck 745 mhz,
-nvidia inspector: very weird but i tried almost 20 times to work this but only 2 times it worked(850 mhz) and after restarting pc, i tried to work it again, but it didnt.
i also asked some other ge60-ge70 owners on a turkish forum, half of them have this no-boost issue aswell.

yes that's normal, dx is basic info and don't shows discrete cards.
remove current vga drivers in safe mode with >>Driver Fusion<<
then reboot to normal mode and install those drivers:

I am building a gaming computer. When i turn on my computer the cpu fan spins quickly then immediately slows down to a slow spinning state. My Boost audio light is on as well. But i get no display. I have tried the DVI HDMI and VGA outputs. I also accidentally pressed the cmos button while the compute was on. I also removed my mobo battery for 5 mins. Oh and on top of all that i dont have my standoffs. So maybe the board is short circuiting. But if that was the case my is my cpu fan remaining on as well as my boost audio light?

None of that is a bios version. We need a link to a copy of your vbios saved to file and uploaded to a file hoster to check if there is a newer version. If not allowed to link yet add a break to the link so it is masked being a link.

UEFI is aGOP compliant vbios that allows to use secureboot/fastboot (Windows 8/8.1). If not using UEFI booting it doesn't matter which you use. Older mainboards with UEFI but not being GOP compliant on the other hand won't work with a GOP vbios and only the legacy vbios allows to use the card.

  • MSI GTX 960 GAMING 100ME new BIOS

I’ve bought MSI GTX 960 GAMING 100ME and I have question about BIOS of this card. Some time ago MSI announced that the’re releasing a new BIOS for GTX 960 increases clock speeds. New default clock speed are set at 1241 MHz default (1190 MHz old), and boost closk are set at 1304 MHz against 1253 MHz old bios.
    http://www.computerbase.de/2015-02/msi-geforce-gtx-960-gaming-erhaelt-neues-bios/
I got card with older version of bios and for now MSI has not yet provided the new BIOS file to download. I know that cards with new bios are in stores. Example:
    http://www.hwbox.gr/content/369-msi-gtx-960-100-million-edition-review-page16.html
I know that I could use MSI Gaming APP which on OC Mode will give me 1241MHz and 1303 MHz at Boost. But I don’t like this software. I’m using LCD profile created by Spyder 3 Elite, and MSI Gamming APP disabling my profile, and I have load it up manually. So this software sucks.
So, when new bios will be available for download?

Sorry, cannot help to answer this
However: provide your current vBIOS (use GPUz to make copy of it) and S/N of the card.
    Little GPUz guide:
Maybe Svet knows a bit more about this..
If he doesn't have latest vBIOS that was, apparently, announced by MSI, then you have to wait for their answer.

  • MSI GTX 980 Gaming issue

    Hi everyone,
Recently I upgraded the BIOS of my msi gtx 980 gaming and i discovered an issue which I don't know how to fix.
I did upgrade my bios with the official bios from msi live updater 6.
    old bios was nv317mh.112
    new bios is nv317mh.113
    The problem:
My boost clocks were somehow changed and i don't understand why...
before the update my boost clocks were the normal 1291(gaming) and 1317(OC)
after the update my boost clocks changed to 1329(gaming) and 1357(OC)
I did reinstalled the 112 version again and see if it could fix but it didn't fix this issue
I don't have any profile or OC in my msi afterburner.
GPU-Z shows the normal clocks (1291/1317) and my afterburner shows the modified clocks(1329/1357).
They were syncronized before the update.
My card is v317-03S so the bios should be right.
Pls help i don't understand what's causing this issue...

Hmm I don't understand the issue. Are you trying to tell that current clocks are higher than advertised?
Yes. After the update my "default" clocks changed somehow.

I've purchased this card about a month ago from Newegg and it's been great so far.  The only problem that i have is when navigating through windows.  Maybe it's just from using my browser but I've notice the screen to flicker when i'm in the browser scrolling or watching videos.  I have turned off hardware acceleration, used MSI drivers, beta drivers, and the latest drivers but this still happens from time to time.  I don't think the card is an issue itself because i do not notice this when I'm in game.  I believe the R9 280x 6GB that i have comes with the latest vbios already so i am not too sure if MSI currently has anything to remedy this issue.  Apparently this has been an ongoing issue with R9 cards.  So not sure if it is the R9 line of cards itself, the drivers provided by AMD, or the bios installed on the cards.  RMA won't fix this issue as it is a widely known problem throughout all manufacturers of this line of cards.

Yeah, I got the same issue. Windows 8.1Pro (64bit).  Same card (6GB).
If I'm on the desktop and I leave a game running in the background and sometimes when using the browser displaying videos and/ or flash video ads, I get what looks like a screen shift.  The picture flickers or jars upward/ downward. It reminds me of something you might have seen on an old CRT monitor when you hit the degauss button, but not quite as bad. It's like some kind of vertical screen refresh or something and looks like someone smacking your monitor from the top while you are using it. The only way I know how to fully re-produce it, at will, is by running my Unigine Valley benchmark in the background and then proceeding to do things on the desktop.  It's definitely not heat related because my GPU temp can be at 33c or lower and still doing it. If I leave my Elder Scrolls Online game running in a background, depending on what's happening in the game, it can do it in this scenario too.

  • MSI R9 280 Artifacts

    Greetings:
I purchased my current video card last summer and have since been having a problem with artifacts appearing randomly during gaming or even on my desktop as a sort of checkered square.  I have played with the texture settings in the games and reducing textures to the "low" setting sometimes temporarily resolves the issue, but upon restoring the settings to "high", the artifacts will reappear.
I have tried using both the drivers provided with my card and the latest AMD Omega drivers, with both producing the same issue across multiple games.
My system specs are listed below; any assistance would be appreciated.
    Board: ASUS H97 Plus
    Bios: Version 0314
    VGA:   MSI R9 280

    COOLER: Coolmaster Hyper 212 EVO
    OS: Windows 7 64bit Professional
    VGA S/N: 602-V277-290B1404034695
Attached is the bios file from my GPU.

No, my old video card did not produce these issues.
May I inquire as to the upper limit on the operating temperate for the R9 280?  I live in a warmer climate and wonder if the issue could be temperate related.
Also is there any BIOS update for my card or do I have the latest version?

  • MSI Z97-G45 Gaming VS MSI Z97 Gaming 5

    Hello there!
As I received much of good help on these forums already, here comes my next help request. I will have to decide which motherboard should I buy soon (upgrading to Intel Core i7 4790K), I have done some research and found out that these two models I mentioned in the thread subject would be of my main interest. I am, however, a bit uninformed, as I could not find any test of MSI Z97-G45 Gaming. I have a few questions about those two.
First of all, Z97-G45 has a fast boot in official specification on MSI Global and Gaming 5 does not say anything about it. Does it mean that Gaming 5 boots long? How I should understand that?
I think Z97-G45 looks better, that red dragon is really fancy, however Gaming 5 laminate looks more black, which makes it also atractive to me.
All that I really need to know is, which one of these will perform better for CPU overclocking? Is there any difference at all? The price is really simillar. I also see that G45 does not contain an M.2 and neither of them got Sata Express. Could anyone explain if Sata Express or M.2 are really worth having them right now? Will M.2 improve my current SSD speeds? And Sata Express will improve my HDD speed? Or how does it work? Will it only boost up drives that are particularly made to work with those connectors?
    Thanks in advance!

All modern mainboards support fastboot as it is a Windows8 feature.

Z97 Gaming 5 is the more modern board. It offers more ram speed dividers. M.2 is pretty much standard for Z97 boards so G45 is more an option for those still willing to use slower msata devices. Of course M.2 is only any use for you if you are using a PCI-Express based (!) M.2 SSD. If you buy such an M.2 SSD (e.g. Plextor M6E) then it will speed up data transfer a lot as SATA 6GB/s limits latest generation SSDs already. M.2 on Z97 boards being PCI-Express based is running directly through PCIe lanes to the CPU while throughput of SATA is limited by the SATA interface. SATA Express being a similar technology is not supported by both boards but devices are also not available really.
