MSI R9 280X 6GB reference layout?

Hi,
Is the R9 280X 6GB a reference layout?  Will the fullboard waterblocks from ek or heatkiller fit?  Is it the same layout as the 7970?  Thanks.

Nope, unfortunately they are not. Just another reason to not get the 6gb. I have four of them and cannot run more than two in any one computer due to the thermal environment they create.
Yeah, I hate the Frozr designs. Nice and quite, and they look pretty, but all it does is distribute heat everywhere else. My PC still runs cool because I have so many 120mm  fans for the size of my case, but I like a good ol reference design.

  • MSI R9 280X Gaming 6GB Issue

I've purchased this card about a month ago from Newegg and it's been great so far.  The only problem that i have is when navigating through windows.  Maybe it's just from using my browser but I've notice the screen to flicker when i'm in the browser scrolling or watching videos.  I have turned off hardware acceleration, used MSI drivers, beta drivers, and the latest drivers but this still happens from time to time.  I don't think the card is an issue itself because i do not notice this when I'm in game.  I believe the R9 280x 6GB that i have comes with the latest vbios already so i am not too sure if MSI currently has anything to remedy this issue.  Apparently this has been an ongoing issue with R9 cards.  So not sure if it is the R9 line of cards itself, the drivers provided by AMD, or the bios installed on the cards.  RMA won't fix this issue as it is a widely known problem throughout all manufacturers of this line of cards.

Yeah, I got the same issue. Windows 8.1Pro (64bit).  Same card (6GB).
If I'm on the desktop and I leave a game running in the background and sometimes when using the browser displaying videos and/ or flash video ads, I get what looks like a screen shift.  The picture flickers or jars upward/ downward. It reminds me of something you might have seen on an old CRT monitor when you hit the degauss button, but not quite as bad. It's like some kind of vertical screen refresh or something and looks like someone smacking your monitor from the top while you are using it. The only way I know how to fully re-produce it, at will, is by running my Unigine Valley benchmark in the background and then proceeding to do things on the desktop.  It's definitely not heat related because my GPU temp can be at 33c or lower and still doing it. If I leave my Elder Scrolls Online game running in a background, depending on what's happening in the game, it can do it in this scenario too.

  • Radeon R9 280X 6GB - Occasional 2D flicker, no matter what I'm doing

Hey, so, as the title says, I have a Radeon R9 280X with 6GB of RAM. Just got it recently. When I got it, I started having a problem with a persistent 2d flicker that would happen while I was gaming or just on my desktop. It happened at random it seemed; some days I would go without seeing it, some days I would see it several times an hour. Thinking the card was defective, I filled out an RMA through Newegg and got a new one.
Lo and behold, same problem. I'm looking for any and all input you guys might have as to what my problem might be, because I have no idea where to start with troubleshooting this guy. I've tried the newest drivers/catalyst and beta drivers with the same results, and I haven't found any vBIOS updates through MSI Live 6.

My card does it too, and I always use ParkControl.exe on every PC build, so core parking is not happening on my PC. If I look in  task manager or Process Lasso, all cores are active 100% of the time...still happens to me though. I hope this has nothing to do with the VRM issues that these cards are known for. I can't imagine anything in my case overheating because I have very large 120mm fans always blowing full blast on my card and 120mm fans taking are out of the case. It's always very cool in there. GPU temp never departs 56c in games.

  • MSI R9 280x problems

Hello i have just gotten a new MSI R9 280x with building a new pc, when i installed all the drivers part from the GPU ones everything was fine, but when i installed the GPU drivers it started to crash such as "Display has crashed and restored" and sometimes it would just come up with a blue screen saying 0x00000116 error.
Now i was thinking its my GPU drivers so i try to install the newest ones and that does not work, still have the same problem
I also tried installing new motherboard drivers and bio's drivers and still nothing. So i would want to know is my GPU broken or my motherboard because everything for my motherboard has been working fine and as soon as i install GPU drivers i start having problems. I have tried to use the integrated graphics and that was working fine (This was when i took the GPU out my pc) with all the drivers for that working fine
PLease help me because i really dont know what to do

  • MSI R9 280X BF4 3GB SWITCH DVI TO HDMI???

    Hi All
It has been quite a while since I have been in this forum, My old profile seems to have vanished maybe due to lack of login so I have re-registered
I am still running my trusty old 990FXA-GD80 mobo (see sig) & today I just received an MSI R9 280X BF4 3GB graphics card, I installed it & did not get any signal via the HDMI output so I found a VGA cable & DVI adaptor & connected it to the TV (Sanyo 42" LCDd) via the VGA input & it booted up fine & I was able to install the drivers & AMD catalyst etc software
I typically run MSI Geforce graphics cards so the AMD Radeon in depth options & menus etc is fairly new to me, Normally I would connect a GTX card & it would simply recognise the HDMI connected monitor or TV & all would be good but for some reason I am unable to get the HDMI output going at all?
I have both cables - DVI to VGA & HDMI to HDMI connected between the TV & graphics card
I might just have to buy a DVI to HDMI cable in the morning & see how that goes?
Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks Nichrome
Yes it is currently connected to a 42" LCD TV, It may not be easy to get hold of a monitor with HDMI input on loan to test either
I will be able to connect my brand new LG 60" LED LCD 3D (60LB6500) TV tomorrow & see if the HDMI will work that way? (The new LG only has HDMI inputs as far as I can find but I will know for sure tomorrow?) It may just be the older 42" LCD TV not playing the game, If the new LG 60" does not work via the HDMI output then its onto the other options........>
The previous Geforce drivers & software was completely removed before the Radeon install but I do agree it may be an issue & a clean install via driver fusion might be needed?
The current or latest drivers I could find is> 14.501.1003
I originally installed the latest drivers from the MSI site & could not find the option to connect via HDMI so I went to the AMD site hoping to fix the issue with new AMD drivers
The audio runs direct to a receiver via SPDIF so for me there is no real need for HDMI output unless it is going to be a better quality option?
From what I have read the quality or performance should not really be any different between the DVI & HDMI output so it should not be any major trouble to buy a DVI to HDMI cable? Any opinions

  • How to undervolt MSI R9 280x for Linux? VBE has no effect on cards

    Hi!
Does someone know, how to lower the core voltage for a MSI R9 280x under Linux? I have 2 cards. The old one is a s/n 602- V277 -28SB (great!) and the second one is a s/n 602- V277 -38SB (bad!).
I tried with VBE on my Windows-machine and set the voltage in the "State 1 - Performance" tab to 1062 for #6 and #0. After flashing the modded bios Vgpu is still at 1200 mV when measured directly on the card with a multi meter. Power consumption at the wall is 270 Watts. However, GPUz shows 1062 mV. Afterwards I set the voltage to -100 in Afterburner. The card now reads 1097 mV and the power consumption dropped to 235 Watt.
I have no idea why the card ignores the VBE settings. Any advice would be appreciated.

You are lucky, on my 28SB I can't boot after any change from 1200mV, even with 1193mV

  • MSI R9 280x temperatures

Hi, I have a MSI r9 280x so I have been playing quite a few games, I used msi afterburner to see the temps in game, and here's what I got, at idle on windows screen the temps were 41degrees to 44degrees, in game it was upto 98 degrees, (the games were project cars and dmc5) my main question is should I be worried about this? Cuz obviously 98 degrees cant be good for your card, any suggestions? Thankyou

you can try to reseat the heatsink and to apply a new thermal paste
[assume if that will not void your warranty, you can ask your reseller or near MSI office if you can do this: >>How to contact MSI.<<]
    else RMA the card..

  • MSI R9 280X Twin Frozr Editon Problem can anyone shed light on it please?

Hi everyone i hope i am posting this in the right thread as i currently am in a bind.
My card has given me a white screen again, this makes it 2 times now this week and i am wondering what my options are here as i have no second card to use and cant be without my PC and be without gaming.
it happened when i closed down a game and once while alt tabbing a screen.
After a reset it is back to normal no white screen.
From what i can see it is not overheating the fans are turning it has been seated well and i have not over clocked it at all with the MSI gaming program and the driver are up to date.
What would you guys think is going on? do you think it is an RMA for me.
Thanks in advance for the help everyone.

Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (xxx.rar) and put the included file (TVxxxxx.zzz) on that stick.
