Msi r9 290 gaming edition throttling

hello has anyone came accross the msi r9 290 gaming edition gpu throttling when doing benchmarks as when i enable oc mode the score is less than when i benchmarked in silent mode using heaven benchmark

The card has major issues, or the drivers. MSI why does it throttle when temps are good?
There is a fix, but MSI need to look at this urgently, see full details here
forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=25688823‎
Its getting reported all over the web by many users, no wonder no one has reviewed the card yet :(

Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the provided archive (131.rar) and put the included file (TV308MH.131) on that stick.
Rename TV308MH.131 to 131.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 131.rom [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

I played Diablo 3 with a friend of mine and compering his fps with the same video settings my pc has lower fps then his pc. And my pc is much better.
Probably Diablo 3 is not the best game for test everything, but maybe is just a signal that means that something is going wrong

You can inrease gpu clockrate in little steps with >>MSI Afterburner<<. If it gets unstable reduce clockrate by a step until it is stable again. GPU will have better performance as long as it is not bottlenecked by the cpu.
i dont get it..with this u mean that i need to increase gpu or cpu clockrate? how should i set afterburner?

  • MSI GTX 980 Gaming Edition 4G Throttling? Faulty Bios? Aggresive Temp limit?

Hey everyone, I've been trying to find a thread regarding the issue or shall i say experience i am having with the MSI 980 so i thought ill start a thread.
I received my 980 yesterday, as you may know the fans don't spool up until the card reaches 61c. I've noticed when the temp reaches 62c my card starts downclocking the core by 16mhz and voltage by 25. I do not understand why if this is a temp limit why is it at 61c when the fans actually only spool up then? Why is it not at 81c like the 970 G1 Gaming i had (never experienced anything like this with it and it boosted 1392mhz out of the box) Is the bios faulty?
I started to increase the Power Limit to 122 and prioritized the temp (91) and that did not help. Sometimes it's averaging at 80 90 and sometimes it actually reaches 105 etc but i have not seen it go any higher than 110. The power limit has reached 110 but this was at 59c but the core and voltage was still at stock. (1342mhz core 1.225v)
As this did not help I increased the voltage by +7 and then the core went back to 1342mhz and voltage back to 1.225 (Goes to 1.200 when it throttles). at 65c it drops back again. So i increased the voltage again to +13, then at 68 69c it drops again. then at +20 the core and voltage is sustained at 1342mhz and voltage 1.225.
Does anyone know why this is happening? My MSi 970 Gaming Edition did the same thing but my Gigabyte 970 Gaming G1 did not do that. I am considering on buying the 980 G1 instead as i think they have the temp limit to 81c so if it reaches such temp it throttles to bring the temp down. Some people have experienced this on the G1 only a few as far as i'm aware.
Just to mention I can still overclock to 1535 when it throttles
Any thoughts? RMA? try the G1 as i never experienced it with that ?

Done that, when the power limit reaches 120 it throttles which is normal. As soon as i enter the game the usage is 90+% and then the core and voltage are at 1342mhz and v 1.225 as soon as it reaches 62-63c it drops the core to 1329mhz and v to 1.200. What ever i do it is stuck at that level unless i increase my voltage by +20 and then it goes to 1.225v. Then it does not throttle. What could this be? If it really is in the BIOS as MSI inteded, then why when i use third party apps to increase the power why doesn't it still force it to throttle. It seems like there is something else wrong to me.

  • MSI GTX 660 gaming edition

Hi just a quick question, I overclocked my MSI GeForce GTX 660 Gaming Edition slightly from 1180mhz to 1203mhz and left the memory clock at 3005mb which is the same as MSI app OC setting that came with the card. (Overclock is so minor i just wanted to test)
Now for some reason im getting kernel driver error 331 stopped responding and has recovered which I never had before I uped the card a tiny bit and not sure if this is linked to adding more MHZ to the core clock or not
Also i noticed when the Kernal error showed MSI afterburner showed me my cards power usage hit 36,405,567 % .........
    current setting of GPU
    Core clock 1202MHz
    Memory clock 3005MHz
Full load temp 45c-59c depending on what game
Power supply Corsair 600w gaming edition
Any help finding what caused the huge power % would help
Also is adding few more MHz onto the clock speed the cause
extra info ..... Case being cool by 3 Corsair 120mm fans so 100% not over heating

    Don't overclock it like that.
Overclock it by using Kepler BIOS Tweaker v1.25 and nvflasher in combination and by modding the bios of the card. BUT do some reading on it before you go on with it. There are risks involved as in every kind of bios flashing. However, I have flashed my cards' BIOS so many times (like more than 30 times each lol, a bit too much yes) until I found stable settings yet I haven't seen any issues other than once where I tried to flash the TOP version's BIOS into my card and that way I had to boot using the integrated graphics card to log in to windows and reflash back to card's own modded-bios version.
OCing via card's BIOS will give you more control over your overclock.
When you increase the card's core clock the boost clock automatically increases as well and sometimes to a clock that the card cannot carry. I know this because I was OCing using Asus gpu tweak or afterburner before and I was getting the same error from even little overclocks.
I then used Kepler Bios tweaker and set the Max Boost Clock to a safe value after much testing.
Most of the time this value is at least as high as 1202Mhz. Msi is usually better in this department and gives more headroom but I don't see any need to go beyond 1202Mhz to be honest.
If you cannot get there with default voltage you can up the voltage a bit until it is stable.
I have 2 of these cards but Asus DCU2 versions in my mini atx motherboard setup where they sit like glued together. Yet still with 1.212 voltage running through the Bios modded one it does not get hotter than 70-71C. Without the voltage it is maybe 1 degree lower. I recently lowered my OC to 1136.6 max boost clocks and in games and heavy apps they run @1137 clocks both. I lowered it because it gave me smoother experience in BF4.

We help if we can. In this case looks like it is a reference card with AMD reference vbios and no MSI one. We have no info about those. Contact MSI about it: >>How to contact MSI.<<

  • MSI R9 290 Gaming 4GB Black Screen/Freeze Issue

    Hello All,
I just received my new MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming. 4GB. It freezes/locks up upon booting into windows. If I do not install the drivers. It does not lock up. As soon as I install any driver, it goes to a black screen, and locks up. I have read the forums, and see a few other people have reported this issue. I have tried the following AMD Catalyst drivers 14.7(beta), 14.1, 13.2. All still have the same issue. I have tried installing the driver manually(via device manager) with out the CCC. I have also tried the native drivers from MSI's website. still same issue. Not sure what else to do here. I am using a CoolerMaster RS-850Watt power supply. Windows 8.1 Pro. Here are the rest of the details of my setup. Anyone know of a fix for this issue?

Hey guys, thanks for trying to help. I ended up going back to the retailer. memory express. They determined that the card was DOA. They exchanged it and provided me a new card. New card has no issues. thank you for the help.

  • Msi r9-290 gaming (fan RPM )

Hello can anyone help please . my r9-290 gaming dose NOT show the fan RPM any more in GPUZ or in MSI afterburner. it use to in 13.12 but now nothing shows on 14.1  (fan rpm = 0 ) fans are on and running on desktop they are at 18% and go to about 40% in game.
plus in MSI afterburner the gpu ram speed keeps going up and down like a yoyo.
here is a screen shot of what i mean.

    Hi hpipiw
I think the fans are actually fine, its definitely looking like a software issue, I didn't see this problem before installing afterburner, and setting a higher min fan speed seems to have cured the issue for now.
I can imagine that a fan thats seizing up might just stop at lower speeds, but I would think it would struggle to start up when touched.
Keeping an eye on it for now, will of course rma if I notice anything bad happening.
    Cheers for the comment.

  • MSI R9 290 Gaming - My PC keeps freezing, blackscreening and then rebooting?:(

So for christmas i got an r9 290 and a new 750w psu.
Before instaalling them i had never had any problems with restarting. However now that i've installed them my PC keeps restarting? what have i doneeee?
    My components are;
    coolermaster 750w 80+ bronze psu
    ASUS m5a78l usb 3 mobo
    AMD fx 6300 cpu
    Msi r9 290 gpu
    three fans
    1 hdd
    2 x 4gb ddr3 ram
What is wrong with my PC? it surely cant be power as coolermaster said i only need about 450w!
When I first installed it this morning it was working fine for a few hours then this all happened! I've made sure all the psu connectors are in properly. Just put my old gtx 650 in and that worked fine i've been able to play games?

Quote from: nhornbrook on 28-December-14, 21:34:18
I don't think it's the mobo bios because if it couldn't handle the 290 surely it wouldn't let me play any games at all? And the device is recognised?
Compatibility issues due to an outdated bios can cause all kinds of problems including the one you have. As this is also an old low-end board better check for an update. When does your pc restart? under load or even in idle? If under load what games did you test?

  • MSI R9 280X Gaming Edition Overheating

I have a pair of MSI 280X cards, one is rev 1.1 and the other rev 1.2 and I use these together for mining. I bought a third card as I was impressed with the thermal performance and noise of the cooler. The first one that arrived had artifacts so this was sent back to the e-tailor and a replacement sent out (both rev 1.2). This also had artifacts so was sent back again. A replacement was again sent out (a rev 1.1) but this time it doesn't artifact but just runs very hot. When gaming on my first two 280X's, they reached about 70C max when gaming (individually). This third card runs at about 85C and is considerably louder as a result. Mining is a complete no-go, the card almost instantly reaches 95C and the AMD drivers crash- presumably due to thermal throttling.
I told the store I bought it from about this issue and they said I should send it back again. I have now received an email back saying that they could not find a fault with the card as it technically can game and mining isn't tested as it isn't strictly what the card was made to do. As a result, they are refusing to replace it and are sending it back to me. Do I have grounds for a replacement here under MSI warranty and should the store honour my right to a replacement? Whilst technically the card can play games which is why they are refusing to replace the card, the fact it runs so much hotter than my other identical cards and cannot even mine for more than about 5 seconds shows that clearly something is wrong with the card. What is the point of getting a card with a good cooler if 85C when gaming is deemed acceptable? Can someone from MSI please reply and perhaps help out my case with the store? I feel like I've basically paid a load of money for a card that is useless to me as I have an MSI 290 in my gaming computer anyhow.

as you are in the EU system all warranty service should be done VIA the reseller you bought the card from!
    >>How to contact MSI.<< <--- follow that if you want to directly contact MSI!
some samples of the R9-280x do run hot (some run at 75-80C max and others will hit closer 90-95C max and is just luck of the draw which set you have gotten) <--- they are lower Grade chips then Prior lines that they came from (HD 7970 chips where better Binned for heat output to be in a 5-10C range but R9 ones are not and may vary alot as a result in a 20C range)
