MSI Radeon HD 5870 artefacts

Hi
I've got a problem with my MSI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card.
- What
Sometimes I get artefacts in games like CoD:MW, MW2, MW3, GTAIV and others.
My screen freezes, I can see lots of squares everywhere, then my display loses signal and I can't do anything for about 10 seconds. Then everything comes back and I can continue playing
- When
I got this problem randomly.. But it's very likely to get it if I there're a lot of particles in the game (e.g. snow in mw2) or reflections (water, mirrors etc)
But for now, I started getting this bug in Counter-Strike: Source. The cooler on the Radeon HD 5870 works too loud when I play it, and I can't play even 10 minutes on a well-designed level.
So there's a screen of the artefacts in Valve Hammer Editor
- System Info
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64
CPU: AMD Phenom II x6
RAM: 4Gb
Graphics: MSI Radeon HD 5870 1Gb
Uptating to the latest driver versions (I mean a full reinstallation of all ATI/MSI/Radeon software several times) didn't solve the problem
I know it's rather hardware problem.. Maybe I need to change cooler.. But this problem showed up in CoD:MW1 right after I've bought videocard, nearly 1 year ago
Any suggestions?

FSP Epsilon 80 PLUS 900W
Didn't tested it on another computer, but I'll try. I would be difficult because 2nd computer has nVidia and nVidia drivers installed.
And here's a screen of artefacts in Counter-Strike: Source

  • Audio problems with the Radeon HD 5870

Hello and sorry for my english, it's not my native language.
I own an early 2009 Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Quad Core (4.1), with OSX 10.8.5, 12 Gb RAM, 512 Gb SSD and Ati Radeon HD 4870 (512 Mb).
I found a good offer for an used original Ati Radeon HD 5870 Mac (1 Gb), so i got it and put it into my Mac Pro  (PCI slot 1, both power cables connected and MDP to HDMI cable, as was previously the 4870).
    My monitor is a Philips LED TV-Monitor 221TE  21,6".
Besides the fact that i had to recalibrate the monitor (the graphic at first was too "sharp"), i lost the audio from integrated speakers of the monitor (the line-out port is selected, as previously was, in system preferences --> audio), it works only with integrated speaker of Mac Pro.
The monitor is connected with audio cable to the line-out of Mac Pro (i know that my 2009 Mac Pro supply only video signals over Mini DisplayPort).
If i put back the 4870 with same connections, the audio is back from line-out...
If i connect an external speaker to the line-out, it works...
So it's not the line-out to be faulty.
Just to try and waste time, i repaired permissions, reset PRAM, installed and updated OSX to 10.9.5, but nothing worked...
Any idea would be appreciated, thank you.

Thank you all for the answers,
@voidcom:  yes, i'm pretty sure it's a genuine Apple Card, not only because assured from the seller, but also because it has 2 MiniDisplayPorts (which, in my knowledge, are present in genuine Apple cards only, PC cards usually have standard HDMI ports).
I'm sure i plugged the audio cable into the right port (the one with the speaker symbol);  in my first installation of the card i left it untouched, but the audio worked with the 4870 and not with 5870.
If i plug an headphone in the rear or in the front, i can hear sound... it seems that the installation of the 5870 blocked audio output towards my monitor only... that's the strange thing.
@Grant Bennet-Alder: yes, i fiddled with the controls in System Preferences > Sound,  was the first thing i did, but only internal speaker works.
The only thing i didn't try, it's the SMC reset, i'll try it ASAP, thank you.
@DPart:  i found the same information searching the web, only Mac Pro 5.1 or flashed 4.1 to 5.1 can output audio via HDMI, thank you anyway.
However, that's not my case... i don't want audio output via HDMI (would be nice, but not essential for me), the installation of the 5870 blocked audio output towards my LED monitor only... with the 4870 worked perfectly instead.
Yes, under PCI section i found the 5870 twice, the first with driver loaded, the second one not.
I searched information about this "ATY,LangurParent" but i found nothing useful:

  • HT4279 ATI Radeon HD 5870 screen resets size after after sleeping. Why?

Purchased an ATI Radeon HD 5870. When connected to 1920x1080 it leaves a third of the screen out. However after starting up it fits the screen. Only after sleeping does it reset to this faulty screen size. I have attempted every Mini dv adapter vga,dvi and hdmi. All lead to the same issue or another.
Is this card defective? Is this an issue with the Lion OS?

Ok let me go into more detail for you.
Macpro had 2 Geforce gt 120 video cards. I recently had some blocking issues ( where the screen just over lays a bounch of boxes with random parts of the background and or aps running). Decided to upgrade to the Radeon 5870. Before the upgrade i have been using a Samsung LCD tv and and old Dell monitor. Worked great. Tv res was set to 1920x1080. Instailed the new card. Hooked up the Dell to the DVI output and Tv to a Mini DV at first using the Mini DV to DVI. Ended up with the half the screen issue. Took the back and got the Mini DV to HDMI. I didnt have the size issue but when set to 1080 it was not hidef. Took that back and got the Mini DV to VGA. Now here is where I currently am stuck. When both the TV (Mini to VGA) and the Dell (VGA to DVI) are connected to the 5870 and the harddrive and monitors go to sleep it resets and i lose an 8th of the screen. I currently am just using the TV and everything seems to be fine. Also on the amount i lose there is a dotted line that some times flickers. Not sure if that means anything.

  • Is it better to have two ati radeon HD 5770 or one ATI radeon HD 5870 for video editing?

Is it better to have two ati radeon HD 5770 or one ATI radeon HD 5870 for video editing? I'm basing this question based on the current options when configuring a Mac Pro. Currently there are three options
    ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
Two ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB [Add $250.00]
    ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB [Add $200.00]
Between the second and third options I am wondering which will provide a better more productive experience for video editing. Such as using FCP or FCPX. I know how many monitors that are in use will affect the answer to this questions. While I'm more focused on which option will deliver a better video editing experience, lets just say for argument sakes that the Mac Pro is running a 30" cinema display and a small generic monitor. About 18". Its an older VGA monitor for web development.
I hope thats enough info to get an answer on this subject.
    Thanks

Ya in my research of this question, I came across this whole issue of Mac not being able to use CrossFire. I didn't thorugly investigate what this CrossFire issue was, but if it makes more sense with the singel 5870 rather than the 2 5770 then thats helpful to know.
If the Mac can't make the most out of two 5770 because it doesn't make use of CrossFire, it seems silly that Apple even bothers to offer it as an option. Plus its cheaper with the singel 5870 versus two 5770. Unless you really needed to run several monitors.
Thanks. This satisfies a long curiousity I have had.

  • MacPro3,1 + Radeon HD 5870 + NEC PA271W-BK + DisplayPort

    Hello all,
As metioned in the subject line, I have the following system configuration:
    2008 Mac Pro ( MacPro3,1 ) : 2 x 3.2 Ghz Quad core
    ATI Radeon HD 5870
    2 NEC PA271W-BK Displays
As many of you know, this ATI video card has 1 DVI-D out and 2 MDP outs. So, if you want to connect more than one display, you must use a MDP connector on the video card, or install another video card.
I wanted to use this video card and connect to these NEC displays so that when it becomes supported in software ( I'm aware of the limited support in Photoshop CS5 ), I will have the capability of displaying 10 bpp output on my monitors. Because of this, installing another video card, or using a MDP to DVI-D adapter of some variety is not an option.
I have one display connected via DVI-D, and the other connected via a MDP to DP cable I bought from Monoprice.com. With this configuration, I had the following issues:
    - With display plugged in to MDP, machine would not boot. No startup sound would be played, but the hard drives would spin up.
    - With display plugged in to MDP, machine would not wake from sleep. Hard drives would appear to spin up, but no image would be displayed on the monitor.
I found that if I unplugged my MDP monitor, booted the machine ( or woke it from sleep ), and waited for the login screen to be displayed, then I could plug in the MDP monitor and it would work. So what did I do? I crawled underneath my desk every morning, unplugged the MDP cable, woke my machine up, and then plugged the MDP cable back in. I did this for a month.
Apple support said that they couldn't help me, because the Radeon HD 5870 is not officially supported on MacPro3,1; it's only supported on MacPro4,1 and newer.
Of course, I searched extensively on the internet for a solution, and there were some that seemed to work and others that didn't. NEC also published a document that said that these errors occurred with certain types of aftermarket MDP to DP cables, but the one they recommended, the Monoprice.com MDP to DP 6 foot, was the one that I had!
Here are two Apple support discussions on the subject which have been archived:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2587838?start=0&tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2583903?threadID=2583903
On a whim today, I went to Fry's and bought a new MDP to DP cable, based on a hunch that my issues may be related to a faulty cable.
It totally was the cable, and my setup works with no problems after I swapped the old cable out.
I wanted to share my solution with others as this can be frustrating. The cable I bought was a Monster Cable Digital Life 8 foot MDP to DP cable. Normally I think that Monster Cables are a complete waste of money ( this one was almost $100 with tax ), and this is NOT a plug for Monster Cables, but with this configuration and the Monster MDP to DP cable I was able to get everything to work.
Hope this helps for anyone who is out there banging their head against a wall.

The DVI port on your card is a Dual-Link DVI-I, which is suitable for higher than 1920 wide, and also contains the VGA signals directly in the bar and four surrounding pins at one end of the DVI connector.
A great deal has been learned since you reported your first problem some months ago.
ATI has made a list of approved adapters available:
    http://support.amd.com/us/eyefinity/Pages/eyefinity-dongles.aspx
DisplayPort, and its Mini variant, are not just a different-shaped DVI port. They are a completely different protocol with a packet interface.
Some early DisplayPort adapters simply do not work:

  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 vs ATI Radeon HD 5870

I have an early 2009 Mac Pro with 8 cores and the upgraded ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card. I see that the 2010 Mac Pros have an option for the ATI Radeon HD 5870. Apparently this card will eventually be available as a kit that will work in my computer.
Do you think there will be a significant performance boost using the 5870 over the 4870 with Aperture if I purchase this upgrade? Apple says the 5870 is great for "motion graphics, 3D modeling, rendering, or animation", but not sure if I should expect much improvement using it with Aperture. I am pretty happy with the 4870, so don't want to spend the cash for minimal improvement.
    Any thoughts or speculation?
    Thanks,
    Dave

No response here, but I posted the same question on the Apple Store Product page for the 5870 kit and received the following reply:
"You won't see a noticeable difference unless you are running heavy 3D applications or gaming. What I would suggest if you want to see an improvement in Aperture 3 is to add more ram to your mac (have at least 8 Gigabytes of ram ) boot up your mac to 64 bit (if running Mac OS 10.6) and run Aperture 3."
This supports my suspicions that this card may not be much of an improvement for Aperture users that currently use the ATI 4870.

  • Why can I get 4k output from MSI Radeon HD 5450 on Win XP but not Win 7?

A few months ago I bought a msi Radeon 5450 Graphics Card.
I was surprised impressed that I could get 4k output (3840 x 2160) on my SEIKI monitor (via HDMI at 30Hz). This exceeds the specification!!!
However, when I took this Graphics card from my Win XP box and put in Windows 7, I can't run at 4k. The highest resolution choice is 1920 x 1080.
In Win XP, I just had to do "Detect Displays" in CCC and the 3840 x 2160 resolution would show up as a choice.
But when I do "Detect Displays" in CCC in Windows 7, I don't get the 3840 x 2160 as a choice. I only get 1080 as a choice.
I did notice the Catalyst Control Centre  (CCC) program between Windows XP and Windows 7 is different.
The Win 7 PC, has an APU (not sure if that has any bearing).
Can anyone advise what I can do?

  • Drivers for MSI Radeon R7 260 1GB

I just bought this the MSI Radeon R7 260 1GB graphics card.
    1. I tried to install drivers from the MSI CD, but nothing happened. So I checked the contents of the CD, only drivers for Win 7 and 8 are supplied! (what happened to VISTA and XP users??)
    2. I tried to get drivers / catalyst controller from the MSI web site, but there are no drivers. (The only thing on offer is a firmware update utility)
    3. I then tried to get drivers from AMD web site, they had drivers for XP 32bit. Whilst this installed the Catalyst Controller, on reboot, it only show a black screen. I had to do a shutdown (via power button). I had to reboot in 'last known known good setting', but then there was a message about no AMD drivers installed. I can't open up Catalyst Controller.  I am only getting basic generic drivers and the window display is terrible.
    4. I then went back to MSI web site,  I tried to install Radeon R7 260X drivers / apps. But that did not work either.
(My previous card was a XFX Radeon R7 240).
Can MSI tell me how to fix this? Or is there no support for Windows XP? Should I return the graphics card?

hello there, have you returned the card yet? if you still need help, would you please provide which model of R7 260 you are using?

  • MSI Radeon HD 6950 UEFI GOP Vbios

    Hi all!
For about a year, i am the proud owner of a MSI X79A-GD65 8D, along with a MSI Radeon HD 6950 2go.
I recently upgraded to Windows 8 and would like to take advantage of the fast boot feature that was recently introduced with my motherboard, but my graphic card is not currently UEFI GOP compliant.
Is it possible to have a vbios update that would make it UEFI GOP compliant? I couldn't find anything relevant previously regarding Radeon 6950 cards, only about 79X0 and some geforces.
    Anyway, here is my S/N : 912-V803-689B1012012423
If not, is there a list of the MSI graphic cards that are officially UEFI GOP compliant?

Thank you very much for your answer! I sent a mail to MSI France Support to ask them directly...
That's sad, because my current graphic card has enough horsepower for my needs, and buying a new one just for the fastboot thing is a little to much i think... ^^
I will keep you informed about what the support replies... Thanks!

  • Problems with the Radeon HD 5870

So I picked up a Radeon HD 5870 to throw into an early 2009 2x2.66 GHz Quad Core Bloomfield MacPro (I know it's officially only sanctioned for the 2010/2011 MacPros, but there's all sorts of threads saying it works fine on the 2008/2009 models). We've been doing some video transcoding of late and the playback has been a little jagged which was what prompted the upgrade.
Had a little trouble getting it to fit into the usual video PCI slot (the one furtherest to the left) so I went with the next slot over. Hooked up the two power cords to the sockets on the mother board and booted up.
I've got two monitors connected to the card -- one, a relatively new 24" Apple Cine and then an older 20" Apple monitor which is going thru the DVI port.
Only the 24" monitor comes up when I boot -- the other monitor is black (the power light is on and all the connections check out, but I can't get it to work).
I'm running Leopard (10.5.8) on that machine. Anyone run into anything similar to this?
    Thanks.

    Use the double wide slot.
Connect the two aux power cables.
Make sure you have 10.6.5 first.

  • Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity Edition

*Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity Edition - 6 miniDisplay ports*
This card will run at the same frequencies as the basic 5870, but is special since is able to support up to 6 monitors simultaneously.
You must recognize the shape of the connectors and this adapters. These are mini Displayport connectors minis that one finds on the Apple portables, the graphics cards of Mac Pro and as the connector for the Apple 24" LED Display. For ATI the only way to allow them to put 6 connectors in such a small space.
To finish, the card has 2 GB of memory so that each of the 6 screens has easily what it needs. We do not know if Apple/ATI hope one day to propose a version Mac Edition.
Hardmac: ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity Edition
With all the issues surrounding DisplayPort and 3rd party monitors I think this can only be encouraging good news.

To show a picture under Mac OS X, a graphics card MUST have Apple firmware. The default is BIOS only, and does not show a picture at any time under Mac OS X.
A PC_BIOS card that is flashed to Apple firmware will usually show a picture, but sometimes all the ports do not work and often there is no picture until the Login screen. If you alternate boot or debug, this makes life more difficult.
    A genuine Apple-firmware card show a picture from power-on.
    Apple sells a genuine Apple-firmware 5870 card, about US$450.

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80 / MSI Radeon ATI HD 7870 Hawk / Phanteks combo.

    Hi
I am in the process of building a new system but have, potentially, run into some problems.
The motherboard I am looking to buy is the “MSI 990FXA-GD80” and the graphics card is the “MSI Radeon ATI HD 7870 Hawk”, processor  FX-8350.
    Now to my question/possible problem.
I am looking to buy a third party cooler from Phanteks, the “Phanteks PH-TC14P-RD”.
I know that it will be a tight fit between the cooler and the graphics card normally, and since the Hawk has the “GPU reactor” (which builds the height of the card) my concern is that it would interfer with the Phanteks making it impossible for me to install the video card using the Phanteks.
I was wondering if this combo would work or not, prior to registering here I Googled searched like crazy but came up with nothing.
I would really appreciate some help.
    Best regards.
    Eric

Since that board has two PCI-E slots with 16 lanes you wouldn't have to use the first slot so reactor is not the real issue. The VRM cooler of the board could be more troublesome as the cooler has two towers and two fans.
However I found somone listing a combo with the cooler and a 990FXA-GD65 which should have a vrm cooler of the same height.

See Bernhards reply #1 above regarding Corsair PSU. If you want or might need more power for future if needed then TX650 or TX750 would also be good choices. I have a TX450 that has been used on all of my systems at one time or another for several years and if you are lucky enough to find one of those it would also be a very good choice but that is a discontinued item and hard to find now. Antec has some good ones and some that are garbage and I would avoid them as you never know what kind of quality you end up with.
All MB are build to standard specs as far as hardware compatibility (PCIe/PCI slot spacing etc.) so there should be no problem there. Limitation can be in the size of the case front to back where the length of the card could be a problem but not the MB itself.
Intel G31PR, are you sure it's not a DG31PR? If so there's nothing on tha MB that would interfere with using the 560 GTX judging from the picture I looked at.

  • MSI Radeon R9 270X Hawk - Screen corruption

    Hello,
I dearly ask for your help, I have an issue with my MSI HAWK Radeon R9 270X, after using my computer for a while the screen on the primary/secondary monitor will become unreadable(see the first link), If I switch the monitor off via Catalyst Control Center the screen corruption will appear onto the  other monitor. Maybe the newer BIOS would help, I have the same issue with another MSI HAWK R9 270X. I didn't have any problems with my former video cards (Geforce GTS 250, GTS450, Radeon 6850 and Radeon 7850).
I tried both 13.12 drivers as well as the newest betas 14.1 ,the only difference was the first target affected, on 13.12 the corruption would appear on primary monitor whereas on 14.1 it would affect the secondary one.
Also occasionally I experience the screen flicker issue as well, maybe newer BIOS could solve both of them.

Then unpack the previously provided archive (131_141.rar) and put the included file (TV303MH.131 or TV303MH.141) on that stick.
Rename TV303MH.131 / TV303MH.141 to 131.rom / 141.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
