MSI Website(s) Security Holes (2014 preview?)

Hello guys,
weeks ago I discovered several security holes on *.msi.com websites. I contacted MSI several times (3 MSI facebook accounts, 2 EMail adresses) and told them where the security holes are located and what an attacker could do with this holes - but they ignored me: They didn't reply (They publish stuff on facebook and dont read the messages I send them on fb ...? - emails are the same) and they didnt fix the holes. This is just irresponsible so I just wanted you to know that most msi websites are unsafe so you shouldn't register etc because it's easy to get access to the database-server(s). If you want something like a "proof" - just contact me,
Edited out threats and foul language -xmad
to other users: Please dont give any personal information to MSI, be carefull if you visit their websites. I'll tell you once they fixed the security holes (Okay well, only if they dont delete this post)
to those MSI guys: Stop ignoring me, check your Facebook and mail accounts and just talk to me and fix the security holes. And well, would be pretty nice to get a reward for my work (In my opinion it jsut would be fair). And well - if you delete this post I'll publish everything TODAY, with detailed PoC.
Have a nice day,
The Captain

First of all - sorry for using foul language and thanks to xmad to let me post again
MSI now fixed all security holes I discovered, but if you are registered on any *.msi.com website, please change your password. If you use the same email and password on other websites, please change your password there too. I was able to gain access to several databases, so it's possible that somebody else was able to do this too.
If somebody is interested in the timeline (dates are in dd.mm.yyyy format):
08.12.13 Discovered first security hole and contacted MSI via email
09.12.13 Discovered 30 other security holes
10.12.13 Contacted MSI
16.12.13 Contacted MSI
18.12.13 Contacted MSI
19.12.13 Contacted MSI
31.13.13 Contacted MSI
02.01.14 MSI contacted me and started to fix the security holes
03.01.14 MSI fixed the security holes I discovered
Well, in my opinion more than 2 weeks to fix a security hole is just to long, but everything should be fine now.
Have a nice day,
TheCaptain

  • Firmware Update for WAG200G to fix Security Hole

    Hello,
I use a Linksys WAG200G with firmware version  1.01.09, and recently became aware that this particular model has a publicly known exploitable backdoor (See: http://www.businessinsider.com/cisco-warns-about-security-hole-2014-1 for more info).
Has this security hole been fixed? If yes, where can I download an update for it?
    Thanks for your time,
    Sam

Thanks for the advice to contact HP tech support!
I have tried in multiple ways since November 2009 to contact HP, when I got the first (of 4) printers. The first 3 printers was subsequently replaced.
Finally in late June 2010 I got the message that there was coming an firmware update for Windows, but not for Mac's. The firmware should improve among other things the paper pick up (load paper issue) and the print-heads life.
I have applied the Windows firmware on the printer from a pc, but still seems to have load-paper issues, even using HP Bright White paper, when printing from Mac's. I have not tested the printing from a pc, but assumes that a firmware upgrade the printer, and are not specific to a certain OS.

  • Security Update 2014-001 Woes

After Security update 2014-001, I can't quicklook any video or audio files (images/text/pdf still work) and when trying to load Facebook or IMDB in Safari, the pages will load, reload three times, then I get a 'Safari Web Content quit unexpectedly' pop-up.
If I open Safari, set cookies to 'never block' then back to my normal setting of 'block third party & advertisers' the pages will load normally.  I have to do this every time I start the browser for those pages (and my bank's website) to load properly.  I'm using Safari 5.1.7 by the way, because I use RSS everytime I browse the web, I want it built into my browser instead of hassling with another app, and they dropped support for it in 6+.
For video/audio files I no longer get a preview of the file in the icon—just generic movie or mp3 icons—and attempting to quicklook those files gets me a window featuring the icon and a message that 'there was an error with the preview of this file.'
I remember when I used to look forward to updates, now I examine them carefully before installing to see what functionality I use all the time that the 'upgrade' is going to take away.  Even after hesitating and reading up on 2014-001 before installing, I still got bit.  I'm just about ready to huck the #@!$ computer out the window.
How do I uninstall the security update so I can resume normal web browsing and restore quicklook function?

What a pain.  I finally managed to fix things by booting from the Lion recovery disk, reinstalling Windo—oops, I mean Lion, then running Software Update and ignoring the 2014-001 security update.
I then set Software Update to never check for updates again.
Voila!  Quicktime player works again!  Quicklook previews audio/video files again!  Safari works again!

  • Java 8 not compatible with yosemite...is there a security hole?

I installed Java8 per Oracles instructions and it is active in my Safari preferences. However, the app pop up still appears, even when I do not have Safari or any other browsers open or running. In fact, even if I reboot the computer and do not have any apps running, within a few minutes of loging in, the pop-up appears. So what is Yosemite looking for? Is there something else running Java in the background that could be a security hole?

    Hi there BallybailShannon,
You may want to try updating Java using the installer below.

  • SQ02 Infoset - security hole

    Hi,
I have heard, that SQ02 (creating Infosets) has several security holes (regarding authority). Does anybody know about it and could specify these holes?
    Thanks
    Markus

    Hi
Steps on how to proceed to create a Query:
    ADHOC QUERY
A query can be created to extract information from master records  i.e  Infotypes.  For example, by creating a query , the data relating to an employee contained in various Infotypes can be extracted.
    Proceedure :
Decide on  the various Infotypes we  want to make the query.  Decide on the area where we  want to query  i.e  Global area or Standard area.  Standard area is client specific and globel area will include all clients.
Menu : HR – PM – Admn -  Information System -  Adhoc Query
Select area standard and select the  user group already created
    Creation of new query  :
TC SQ03  -  Select Environment – Select Standard Area -  Enter  --  If new user group is to be created, enter name of the user group, click on create and enter necessary information and  exit after saving
TC SQ02  -  Enter name of the Infoset – Create – enter name of Infoset -  Data source -- >  Table join by basis table – give name of table e.g  pa0000 -  Enter -  Click on insert table if we  want to include more tables – give name of table one by one and after finishing,  place cursor on the joining lines and right click to delete unwanted relationships  - check  - and go back  - field groups  -  include all table fields  - click on generate button   -  go out
TC SQ03  -  Select user group  -   eg.  Payroll
Infoset  - Enter name of newly created Infoset
Assign users and Infosets  -  Assign infosets  -  put tick on payroll  - save and go back
TC  PAAH  -  Expand the nodes and put tick on relevant fields depending upon necessity
Save the query  by giving the same name as infoset for easyness..
    Use
The InfoSet Query is designed for reporting on data stored in flat tables. It is particularly useful for reporting on joins for master data and joins for ODS objects.
    Prerequisites
You must take the following steps before you can create Infoset queries:
    ·        Set up Roles for the InfoSet Query
    ·        Process Classic InfoSets and Assign Roles
    Procedure
    Define the InfoSet Query
           1.      Call the Query Builder. There are various ways of doing this:
To call the Query Builder from the corresponding role menu or from the BEx Browser, double-click on the InfoSet Query entry in the menu that is created when you set up a role.
Developers and testers of Classic InfoSets are able to call up the Query Builder directly from the Classic InfoSet overview in the Administrator Workbench.
If several Classic InfoSets are assigned to a role, and one of them has been identified as a standard Classic InfoSet, this Classic InfoSet is used as a template when the query is called up. To change the template, choose Create New Query – Classic InfoSet Selection. Any of the Classic InfoSets that are assigned to the role can be the new template.
           2.      Define your query. The procedure is similar to the procedure for defining queries in the BEx Analyzer.
Transfer individual fields from the field groups you have selected in the Classic InfoSet into the preview. To do this, use the drag and drop function, or highlight the relevant fields in the field list.
Use either of these two methods to select any fields you want to use as filters. These fields are displayed in the Selections area of the screen (top right).
When you are preparing the query, only example data is displayed in the Preview. When you choose the Output or Refresh function, the actual results are displayed on the same screen.
           3.      Execute the query.
           4.      Choose from the following options:
    Ad hoc reporting
You do not want to save the query for later. Save the Query Builder without saving.
    Reusable queries
You want to save the query, because you want to work on it later, or use it as a template. Use either the Save or the Save as function to save the query.
In addition to the Classic InfoSets that you assigned to the role, you are also able to use the query as a template. It is not possible, however, to access the query from other roles.
After you save the query, a second dialog box appears, asking you if you want to save the query as a separate menu entry within the role. If you choose this option, you are able to start the query directly from the user menu or from the BEx Browser. It is also possible to use the Role Maintenance transaction (PFCG) to save this kind of role entry.
Choose Menu ® Refresh to display the query.
If you want to change or delete the saved query, use the Edit function from the context menu in the BEx Browser to call the maintenance tool for InfoSet Queries with this query as a template.
    InfoSet Query on the Web
It is possible to publish each InfoSet Query on the Web. There are the following display options:
    ·        MiniALV for creating MiniApps in the SAP Workplace
    ·        MidiALV without selection options
    ·        MidiALV with selection options
Both the MiniALV and the MidiALV allow you to switch between various selection/layout variants. The publishing screen for the data is adjusted individually using URL parameters.
The following prerequisites are necessary for security reasons:
Releasing the query for the Web
Specifying an authorization group for the corresponding Classic InfoSet
Call up transaction RSQ02 InfoSet: Entry, and choose Go to ® Additional Functions ® Web Administration of Queries. Make the corresponding entries.

  • How to repair security holes and viruses

My phone keeps saying it has bout 13 security holes and maybe some viruses

Do you have a security app like one of the following that could be generating that message?
    * Lookout: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lookout
    * Trend Micro: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.trendmicro.tmmspersonal
    * Norton: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.symantec.mobilesecurity
If not, that could be some advertising from a website that you should not trust, or a bad app you installed. Probably a good idea to install one of the security apps (but probably only one to avoid bogging down with overlapping functionality).

  • Cookies secure, or security hole?

I saw a website spoofing itself to be Amazon.com (blatently phishing for credit card information), which displayed information contained in my Amazon.com cookies. Their site was acting as a bridge to Amazon.com, and I presume sniffing for any valuable information they could steal.
I didn't fall for their credit card request, but I was surprised to see my personal information stored in cookies being requested and passed through. Side note: I'm not using Little Snitch yet, but I'll probably get it soon.
    Using Safari v2.0.2 (416.13).
Is this a security hole in Safari?
    Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Cinema 30 & 23

Well, one example I posted about here a few months ago was CodeTek virtual desktops. I installed it just by dragging it to the Applications folder. No authentication needed.
When I upgraded to 10.4, it stopped working, but I found when I locked the plist file, it prevented codetek from corrupting it and it ran. (The problem has long since been fixed).
However, simply changing the ownership and write permissions on the plist file to root did not prevent the application from writing to the root-owned and write-protected file. Somehow it could do this, even though it had never been granted administrator priviliges.
I checked this behavior with a few other applications, and this was not restricted to Codetek, but rather seems to be a property of the Apple umask or whatever it is called for (non-unix-type) Applications.

  • MS Office secretly connects to my Mac and scans my activity. How??? Security hole? Exploitable by hackers?

I have a strange problem. All by itself it's not so serious, but it concerns me that it reveals a security hole which can be exploited by hackers.
I may be over-reacting, so any reassurance or explanation would be appreciated.
    Here's the situation:
I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6.5. I also have a new MacBook Air also running 10.6.5. I recently used Migration Assistant to move all my applications from the MacBook Pro to the MacBook Air. The migration worked fine with one very troubling exception.
One of the applications that got migrated was MS Office 2008 (MSWord, Excel, etc.). When I just had my MacBook Pro, MS Office worked fine. Also, now, if my MacBook Pro is turned off and I'm just using my Air, MS Office again works fine.
HOWEVER...if I have my MacBook Pro open and running MS Office on it, and then I simultaneously open my Air and try to launch MS Office, I get an error message that says
"Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac cannot start because Microsoft Office is already in use.
An office program is being used by Apple Mac. Your installation exceeds the number of installations permitted by the license agreement."
However, if I then "Quit" MS Office on the Pro, and then try to launch it on the Air, I don't get the error message, and it works as normal. The same thing happens if I switch computers -- if it's running on the Air first, then I can't launch it on the Pro. Basically, only one of the computers can run MS Office at any one time.
Now, the issue about the MS license agreement is not what concerns me -- I guess the version of MS Office I bought back in 2008 was only supposed to be installed on one single computer, and never migrated to a new computer (I eventually plan to use the Air full time and retire the Pro). I'm probably going to get a newer version of MS Office eventually anyway, and also I almost never use both computers at the same time, so I'm not worried about being unable to use MS Office on both computes simultaneously. No, what worries me is this:
How does MS Office on one computer even know that my other computer is running and has MS Office open?
I'm not an expert on networks and sharing and connectivity and all that, so excuse me if I use inaccurate terminology, but...:
Both computers connect via AirPort to a cable modem and thus share the same wifi hotspot to connect to the internet.
But as far as I can tell, the two computers are not "connected" to each other. In the System Preferences for both computers, in the "Sharing" panel, all File Sharing is off. Also, none of the sharing boxes are checked.
Neither computer shows the hard drive of the other on its Desktop. If I wanted to, I could use Finder's "Go" menu, choose "Connect to server," then "Browse," then find the other computer, double-click on it, type in the admin password, and then connect the two computers. But I haven't done that, and MS Office is able to see what the other comoputer is doing, even when they aren't connected in any way (as far as I can tell).
I find this pretty disturbing. How in the world does the MS Office on one computer even know that the other computer exists? Furthermore, how does it know that the other computer is on and running? And lastly and more importantly, how does it know which programs are running on the other computer?
One extra detail: in order to try to diagnose this odd behavior, I installed a program called "Little Snitch" which monitors all network activity and notifies the user whenever any malware programs or other sneaky behind-the-scens apps try to send data over your connection without your knowledge. Little Snitch seems to work great but when I test the problem after installing it, Little Snitch did not even detect or report that MS Office was doing any surreptitious network snooping. So whatever MS Office is doing, it's doing it pretty sneakily.
Here is my worry: Could a hacker somehow exploit this capability of MS Office to monitor activity on my computer without my being aware of it? Or could someone re-adapt this snooping code from MS Office for more nefarious purposes?
Or am I completely misapprehending the situation somehow?
Any  reassurance or explanation would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

But my question is: How does the software do that?
It scans the local network for computers trying to "share" software that is only supposed to be licensed for one computer. I can't give you a technical answer, I can just tell you that's what it's doing.
then what's preventing less ethical coders from deploying similar but more sinister malware with the same capability?
Nothing. Any vendor of any software, from a one person shareware or freeware app to a company the size of Apple, Microsoft or Adobe could sneak in damaging code. Any company that wants to stay in business though would never allow it.
In a typical software company (particularly larger ones), you have not only the people who write the code, but also system analysts who review the code looking for flaws or anything else that shouldn't be there.
Now I have the fear that if I'm using a wifi hotspot in a cafe or wherever, someone else with hacking skills on that same hotspot could basically see what I'm doing on my computer, without my knowledge.
The software to pry (they hope undetected) into other folks' computers on an open network like that has been around for years. That's why you at least need to have your firewall enabled when using a wifi hotspot.

  • Although I turned off WiFi, set as 'require admin password to turn on and off wifi, when I turn on my MacBook Pro, retina latest model, just got for a month, it turns on wifi automatically, is this a back door or virus or security hole? Thank you

I have my all networks at 'Off' status in the system panel, never use Bluetooth either, also in the top status bar, and set as 'require admin password to turn on and off WiFi', but when I turn on my MacBookPro 15" retina newest model only one month old, it goes on to WiFi automatically by itself.
Is this a back door? Security hole?
The other day, I was taking a break for five minutes, when I came back, the Microsoft outlook is open for setting up an account, I never use outlook, it is there only because it comes with the office package. Also, iTunes was playing music, I don't use iTunes when I'm working. Both were not on before I left for the break.
    What is the problem?

  • Restarting taking forever after Security Update 2014-002

I just downloaded Security Update 2014-002 and my Mac Mini is taking forever to restart after the download and installation process finished. I'm running the latest version of Mavericks and my Mac is stuck on restart! What should I do?
    Need help! Thanks.

Tap the space bar on your keyboard once. The dispaly may be sleeping.
The first restart after the update here was longer than usual but I restarted one more time, it was back to normal boot time.
After the restart, open the App Store then select Updates from the menu.
It should say:  Verio 1.0 Installed Apr 22, 2014

  • Slow Sleep Wake-Up after Security Update 2014-002 MacBook Air

Hello! I have a 2013 August MacBook Air. I experienced the "screen goes black, hard restart" issue for many months until one of the updates cured that issues, thank goodness. I just updated with Security Update 2014-002 and just noticed it took about 20 seconds for my MacBook Air to wake-up from sleep mode. I was fearful it was back to the "black screen, no wake-up" issue with this update, however when it finally came back up I was relieved albeit very cautious now. Anyone else have this same issue?

    Hello macforme
If you are having issues with waking from sleep and slow startup times, then check out the article below. The main thing to try is to reset the SMC and NVRAM as a starting point sort the issue out.

  • Unable to install the security update 2014-002 1.0 on 10.9.2

I'm trying to update my Mac Book AIR 1.7 GHZ i5 4 GB with the security update 2014-002 1.0 on 10.9.2. After downloading via Mac App Store it restarts the machine and shows a message "Sicherheitsupdate 2014-002 konnte nicht verifiziert werden. Es wurde beim Laden möglicherweise beschädigt oder verändert. Klicken Sie auf „Aktualisieren“, um es zu laden und prüfen Sie das Update erneut." Next Maverick starts normal and isn't updated. i tried this several times. Alternatively i downloaded the SecUpd2014-002Mavericks.dmg manually directly from Apple but then i get an error that the DMG is corrupt so i can't start the update. I also downloaded the OSXUpdCombo10.9.3_13D45a.pkg but while running the installer it verifies the package with the result "Beim Extrahieren von Dateien aus dem Paket OSXUpdCombo10.9.3_13D45a.pkg ist ein Fehler aufgetreten." I'm trying to update my Mac Book AIR 1.7 GHZ i5 4 GB with the security update 2014-002 1.0 on 10.9.2. I also downloaded the OSXUpdCombo10.9.3_13D45a.pkg but while running the installer it verifies the package with the result "Beim Extrahieren von Dateien aus dem Paket OSXUpdCombo10.9.3_13D45a.pkg ist ein Fehler aufgetreten." Any ideas?

  • Bootcamp issue with Security Update 2014-005.

My MacBook Pro with Bootcamp won't boot in Windows 8.1 mode after the recent Security Update 2014-005. Any suggestions on how to diagnose and repair the startup.
    I am using a MacBook Pro (13 inch, Mid 2012) with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 with a Macintosh HD.

  • Security Update 2014-005 1.0 is trying to install a second time

Security Update 2014-005 1.0 has already been installed and is part of the "Updates Installed in the Last 30 Days" Above that there is "1 Update Available" but it is the same one I have already installed. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to it at first and tried to finish installing it by hitting the RESTART button..... the iMac tried to restart but stayed doing the spinning circle of death.... I waited for 30mins and nothing happened. I ended up unplugging the power a restarted the iMac and it appears to be running fine. However, 1 available update remains and continues prompting to install. How can I clear this update???

Then the problem is on your computer or you are running Yosemite. If it's the former then start with:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Just installed security update 2014-002, now Itunes will not open. Have rstrated but no change, need help to fix, please

Just installed security update 2014-002, now Itunes will not open, I have rebooted twice with no effect, I don't know what else to do to get my itunes back. Need help please

Believe I've firxed my problem, at least, ITunes is now working again. I followed the information provided from a couple of posts on this thread, (1) re restarting with command-s held down; did it twice, made no differerence; (2) manually re-installed the Security update; no difference; each time restarting, no effect; (3) shutdown the computer; I did for 35 minutes, upon restart, ITunes is back to normal, seems to be working fine. Turning the computer off must clear the cache?
