Msi x79 a gd45 update BIOS without CPU

Hi I just bought this MoBo but  it doesn't support the I73820 cpu if not properly updated.
How can I update the BIOS without the CPu installed?
is it possible?
kind regards
Gio.

Just get it to a nearby MSI service center (if any) and get the BIOS updated. If not, then there must be some computer shop which can do it for you.
If you will go for RMA then you got to wait for some time.
My city has a MSI service center so most probably yours should too.

  • Update UEFI without CPU

    Hi,
I've never owned an MSI motherboard before, so without complete documentation in the FAQ section here or in the manual:
I'm planning to buy an MSI B85I board and want to pair it with an Intel G3240. Given the CPU is a Haswell Refresh, the motherboard requires the latest UEFI update. Can I update the UEFI BIOS without a CPU via M-Flash?
    Thanks in advance.

Depends where you are buying from? If its a shop, let them do the CPU install and make sure that the latest BIOS is flashed.
The DC refresh CPUs mostly work on the older BIOS versions, at least that has been the experience for the users on this forum. The users then flash the latest BIOS.
See here for a user that tested and actually flashed back to the first BIOS version on that board and DC still worked. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=181245.0
Thanks. I'll see what the shop can do. It seems the 8-Series motherboards are quickly being made redundant given the difficulty to find a compatible CPU (without BIOS update).

  • Updating BIOS without floppy drive?

Hi I wish to update my BIOS so I can use my new dual core cpu but it seems incredibly complicated.
Like the title says, I don't have a floppy drive. However I've heard some say this doesn't matter and I can install the new BIOS from the hard drive.
My motherboard: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    The Bios (top one): http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=587
Does anyone know what I can do?

I gave up and tried inserting my old athlon 64 3500 in and it now works, although sometimes the screen gives no signal so I reset.
However now my ethernet controller is not working so I can't access the net through my router. I've installed the NVIDIA nForce3 System Drivers from http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=587
as well as getting the Realtek Gigabit Ethernet Drivers off there and installing a 'LAN utility' off it. Couldn't execute anything else with it.
But no luck. My pc recognises the LAN as connected but I can't access my router nor the net. In System it shows my ethernet driver as a question mark.
At the moment I just want to get back online.
p.s.: I was flashing so I get my dual core to work. My bios at the time (never been updated) only saw it as single core.
EDIT: In system I've tried updating the ethernet driver that way but no luck.

Try with just one memory stick, also provide details about memory sticks used.
You can try to setup memory voltage in BIOS to 2.7V && re-test.
Also try with another PSU as suggested.

BIOS update may need OS re-install in some cases.

Hi. I wont to update my bios to version: version 1.7
    http://www.msi.com/product/mb/Z87_MPOWER_MAX.html#download
    There is a red warning:
You must use the following methods to update this BIOS.
    - Use MFlash to update "BIOS + ME"
    - Use MSI Live Update
I know that Live Update is not recommended for updating bios.(unless si this something new?)
So my question is: what exactly should i do to update bios correct way?
Best regards and thank you for help.

Use the method and file following file (you MUST use the attached archive) to flash version 1.7
    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
A.) Download the attached archive and place it on your desktop. Do not decompress.
B.) Download and install the Forum flash tool.
C.) Insert your FAT32 formatted usb stick.
D.) Make sure that all win 8 options are disabled. (Fast Boot etc) Also make sure the legacy USB is enabled.
E.) Start the forum flash tool and select option 1. Then point the tool at the compressed archive we downloaded earlier. Then to your USB Flash Drive.
F.) Boot to the USB and follow the directions. MEMTEST is included with the forum flash tool and it is recommended to run this prior to any flash.
Once the flash is complete, you must download and install the latest ME drivers.

  • Msi x79 a gd45 quad channel (16gb ram) memory fail

    Hi,
I'm facing troubles running a quad channel on my x79 agd45 msi MoBo.
    these are my components:
    MoBo: x79 agd 45 Msi
    CPU: I7 3820 3.6ghz
RAM Corsair vengance lp 16gb (4x4gb)
    Video: Nvidia gtx 660ti
    Cooler:Freezer-i30 artic
    ssd: intel 120gb (520 series)
    hdd: wd 2tb
    Psu: corsair 650W
The Pc is working properly although I had to update the Bios in order solve the CPU/MoBo compatibility that made the PC reeboot every 5 seconds as soon as I tried to power the system on.
Now it is working on a Dual channel (8gb) but as soon as I try to install either a third or a fourth channel it doesn't allow me to even enter the BIOS. the motherboard led says "67" which means Late CPU initialization when I try to install the other 8gb of memory (16 total) to the third and fourth dimm.
I am 100% sure that my BIOS is updated to the latest version. As I have used the Msi Live update tool.
could the TEMPERATURE be the problem? as it is quite high ( 70°, I had to remove the thermal paste when I sent the cpu back for testing and now I'm waiting for the shop to send me more paste, it will take another day, meanwhile I'm using the Pc only for resolve this problem online )
what should I do? is there any setting I can adjust in order to resolve the problem?
    Many thanks in advance.

As I have used the Msi Live update tool.
    Once all the problems are sorted out, delete this from your pc. It is a dangerous utility to allow to do flashes. Use the forum USB method;
      >> Forum USB Flash Method <<
After a flash, it is recommended that a full battery removed CMOS clear should be performed. Once back in the BIOS, reset all settings as desired and then retest. If each RAM has been tested individually in the primary DIMM slot and they check out ok, place two sticks in, insert the third stick in DIMM 4, does it POST? Remove that stick and place it in DIMM 3, does it POST? If not in either 3 or 4, that is usually a classic sign that some CPU socket pin(s) are damaged or bent, or CPU cooler is not mounted evenly, or the mounting torque is wrong, or, there are errant standoffs underneath the mainboard causing the 3 and 4 DIMM slots to be shorted or grounded out.

  • Msi x79 xpower II . Bios permanently corrupted

Hi i have a really bad situation on my mobo
    BIOS A and B corrupted.
Can boot just from "multi bios button" Bios present V2.7
Used the "MSI Forum HQ USB flashing tool" with package you posted (150) but still no success.
I also tried the M-flash method and the FPT method, but nothing. I tried to update just bios, or bios and ME, but no success.
Bios A is stuck to FF code, Bios B seems ok, but no video signal, I can see the complete sequence of booting from the post codes, but at the end there is no Video.
Is possible to see the change of "intensity in the black screen (like if the setup bios can open) but at the end everything stay black
I will appreciate any suggestion please
    thanks

    oki, if i understood right:
BIOS A = corrupted and can't be repaired
    BIOS B = working fine
BIOS C = in a cage, his status is..?

    oki, then:
Quote from: giorgioprimo on 22-December-14, 23:06:27
yes, but....the chip in the cage, works. Is the bios A chip which does not work.
    So my plan is:
    1) get a new bios chip
    2) put the new bios chip in the cage
    3) flash the new bios chip in the cage (booting from bios B)
    4) unsolder the A bios chip from motherboard
    5) replace it with the bios chip previously flashed in the cage
until wait for new BIOS Chip to arrive, why not:
    1) unsolder the A bios chip from motherboard
    2) put bios chip A into the cage and try to repair it from there
to 1: you need to unsolder the A bios chip from motherboard in all cases, with regardless what happens
[assume if you wish to repair BIOS chip A and not to leave it as is]
to 2: if BIOS A chip can't be repaired from there too, then mean BIOS chip is probably for trash
if the BIOS A chip can be repair fine when placed in cage,
then you no need a new BIOS because seems the BIOS chip is working fine and the problem is not in the BIOS chip,
but in place A where is soldered BIOS Chip A

  • Updated bios increased cpu temp?

I updated my bios from 1.7 to 2.1 and my cpu temp has went from an idle of 50 which isnt good anyways to an idle of 60.  I flashed because when i went inot ht menu the bios would freeze and pc need manual reboot.  Also theres alot of new options in the bios now anyone have a guide?

If you are overclocking, back down on the overclock to reduce the temps.  What type of thermal transfer material are you using on the cpu heatsink?  If too much is applied, it can restrict the thermal transfer.

  • MSI H61M-E33(B3) updating bios.........file not found

    Hi,
I tried to update the bios MSI H61M-E33(B3) from 10.D to 12.2. After rebooting, i got the message "BIOS Update: ... file not found".
There is something wrong, what could it be?
The following files are on an usb-Stick:
    - 7680vC2.exe (Windows-Installer)
    - EIVB.bin (MD5: 55a1af369b1db5b180a432a8fa5c7178 )
    - IM9T318R (empty directory)
If the stick is missing, i got the message that the bios-update is not finished yet.

    If that doesn't work:
    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
Download the attached archive to your desktop(of any computer)
    Install the forum update tool
Use option 1 of the tool and point it at the entire archive.
It will prepare the flash tool to flash, I am not sure if you are getting far enough to use this, perhap try a full cmos clear as well.
If none of these solutions will work, you will need that spi programmer.

Its probably just a bricked board. I suggest you phone your local PC shops and find out which one has a ISP programmer. That way they can flash the latest, or any BIOS version for that matter, onto the current BIOS chip, ensuite.  Here is an example of such a programmer http://www.xeltek.com/In-System-Programmers/SuperPro-IS01/
Fry's Electronics in the US seems to be quite helpful from what I understand. That is of course if you are from the US.
You can download the latest BIOS from the MSI site and take that along on a USB flash drive, and they will be able to flash it for you, at a fee of course, normally.
Else you can search the web for companies that specialise in sending you ready flashed BIOS chips, which will of course cost money as well and means you have to solder it onto the board.
Alternatively you can send the board to a MSI technical centre and they will also do the job.
You will have to weigh up the costs and time effort and decide.

  • Updating bios without using windows

I have aquired a bios virus that is not letting me boot anything that has to do with windows. I have been able to use a linux live cd to use the computer so im guessing there is no hardware problems.
I have tried using  a usb flash drive with dos to re install the bios but it seems the file that hp provides only works with windows.
Wondering if any one can help me out wih this

    laptop is a dv7-2014tx

    Hi naturebread,
    What operating system?
Are you positive the virus is BIOS resident? It may be a boot sector virus. Can you enter BIOS? Try resetting BIOS to defaults if you can enter setup. Have you tried any type of recovery on the system: HP Factory Recovery, MS restore or repair, or MS Backup and Recovery?
Please see this forum post on flashing the BIOS. Make sure you have the correct BIOS when attempting this procedure.
I have not tried this so I cannot verify. You would have to create a bootable USB drive or use an external FDD.
Also, please carefully read the entire above referenced post.

Sorry to say but it seams illogical. AFAIK it is impossible to flash form SB to IB bios using Ivy Bridge. Am I wrong?
Going further... I can not find any positive reports that users can get working system by  changing cpu to Ivy after all those bad flashes. I see many suggestions to try it but I can not see any "success!" info. IMHO MSI flash procedure is just "somehow" unreliable. It is nice that MSI decided to support IB on older motherboards but we see too many bricks on our forum.
