MSI X79 GD65 8d DVD problem

For some reason the DVD drive does not work with the MSI, but it works with my other computers. The DVD drive is detected by Windows 7, but it will not read any DVD/CD.

What SATA port are you using the ODD in? SATA II or SATA III? Native Intel or external? Are the SATA controllers all enabled in the UEFI/BIOS?

  • MSI x79-GD65 (8d) RAM issue.

I've just recently bought a new pc. Put it together this week aswell, everything works fine except for the fact that my RAM is not capable of running quad channel. The problem is (as far as I've been able to diagnose it) that the slots to the right of the cpu, that's dimm slots 5-8, aren't working.
After installing all the parts and installing the memory in slots 1, 3, 5 and 7 (the black ones), I noticed that Windows only saw 8GB of ram rather than the full 16GB. I went into my BIOS (not clickbios but startup bios as that allows you to view Memory-Z) and found that it only detected the Ram in slots 1 and 3. I turned off the pc and put the ram in slots 5 and 7 into slots 1 and 3 to check if the ram was faulty. They were detected fine.
I put all of them in again but still no more than 8GB got detected. I swapped all the memory into the blue slots (2, 4, 6, 8). After doing so the computer wouldn't post. I then tried to boot with different ram (2 sticks of 2GB DDR3 1333mhz Mushkin) in slot 1 and 5 (that is 1 one the left and one to the right of the cpu). Only the ram in slot 1 got detected.
I then put the Mushkin in the first two black dimms (1,3) and put all the corsair ram into the blue slots (2, 4, 6, 8). No more than 12GB got detected (which was slots 1-4, 2x2gb and 2x4gb). Memory-Z confirmed that none of the ram in slots 5-8 got detected.
As a desperate last measure I took out the Mushkin ram and put the Corsair ram into slots 1-4. All of the ram got detected but for obvious reasons it was only running dual channel.
I've read on this and other forums that sometimes the cpu socket pins can be bent and that can cause memory problems, I took apart the pc again and looked at the pins, but none of them were missing nor were any bent.
The question now is how can I get quad channel ram working?
    system specs
    Motherboard: MSI x79-GD65 (8D)
    Bios: Version 1.7 (latest version)
    VGA: Gigabyte 670GTX OC
PSU: Corsair Enthusiast TX750M (750 Watt)
CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 (stock speed)
MEM: Corsair Vengeance CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9 (4 sticks of 4gb)
HDD: Corsair Force 3 240GB SSD.
    + 2xSamsung F3 1TB in raid 0, all on the Intel chip.
    COOLER: Corsair H100
    OS: Windows 7 64bit Ultimate

For quad channle you must populate DIMM1, DIMM3, DIMM5, DIMM7 or all slots if using 8 sticks. Populating slots 1-4 has to result in dual channel.
If 1, 3, 5 and 7 won't work there's some different problem that still would indicate bent pin(s).

  • MSI X79-GD65(8D) gives a posting error 63 Late CPU Initialize

    Hey Guys.
I have recently purchased new hardware.
    MSI X79-GD65(8D) Motherboard
    Intel i7 3820 CPU
    4 X Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3-1600 RAM
    MSI GTX660Ti Power edition GPU
    Corsair 750W Professional series PSU
    Corsair H80 CPU Cooler
I haven't overclocked ht e mobo, but on cold boot, the mobo doesn't initialize, gives a post error 63, refered to the mobo manual, it says it means late CPU initialize. Checked the BIOS, running version 1.7 and according to MSI download site for the CPU support list.
The memory is in quad channel as it shows in a diagram in the mobo manual. If I switch the pc off, and back on, it initializes and boots, the pc runs stable, it can run 48 hours no hassle, passes burn in tests to, just the first cold boot doesn't initialize.
Any ideas for what to look at would be great.
    Thank you.

A little hint for you: Don't try any of the .1B betas as they run horrible. I had to remove the latest .1B3 as it bricked the board and had to be recovered.
1.18 B7 is still the best bios to use:

    You have 3 PCI-E x16 slots (x8-x4-x4) and 4 PCI-E x1 slots.
On the other hand, your CPU is limited to 16 PCI-E lanes.
Those 3 x RB44Ge routers are PCI-E x4, so you're going to use ALL the PCI-E x16 slots for them.
With the remaining PCI-E lanes you need to be lucky ...

  • MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) Boot Problem

I found a beta BIOS on the MSI forum, and flashed from it. Now "UEFI:Windows Boot Manager" isn't showing under "Boot Option Priories", and as the drive was initially configured in AHCI mode and formatted with the GPT format, I need this option. It now lists my HD as a regular HD. This happened earlier, also, where I was flashing the BIOS with different versions in order to try to clear up BIOS bugs. Now I can't even boot into Windows as I just get a blinking cursor right after the BIOS screen. For some reason, the BIOS is filtering the "Windows Boot Manager" option and clearing the CMOS didn't help. I saw another post of a similar nature on here, and am wondering if there an EFI shell command to get this option back? I hope I don't have to return this board back to the vendor.
    Steps to reproduce the problem:
    1. HD set to AHCI mode
    2. Windows 7 x64 install went flawlessly
    3. Windows Boot Manager selected as option under Boot Option Priories
    4. Flash to any other version BIOS and Windows Boot Manager option completely disappears from Boot Option Priories
    5. Formatting the HD and reinstalling Windows brings back the Windows Boot Manager option

Well, there is nothing wrong at all with MSI's response:
    Quote
the issue you are experiencing has to do with the fact that the UEFI data is stored in the NVRAM which gets cleared whenever you update the bios. This so far as I was informed is not something we can change.
This is the same thing you just said:
    Quote
Pretty much, Windows writes to the firmware when you install it using GPT. If you update the BIOS, the NVRAM is cleared
So, what is there to laugh about?
    Quote
This so far as I was informed is not something we can change.
Of course MSI cannot change that by any UEFI fix, as this seems to be an UEFI design obstacle.
    Quote
but you can run a Windows emergency boot disk and issue a couple commands and get the data written back to the firmware.
... or use the tools mentioned in the articles I linked you to in my previous reply to backup & restore NVRAM data.

  • MSI Z77A-GD65 loop boot problem

Hello, 20 days ago I bought this mobo, with Intel Core I-7-2600K (Sandy Bridge), 16 Gb of RAM Corsair Vengeance (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9).
It worked fine for 20 days, then today, when   I turned on the pc It didn't boot, and it goes in a loop sequence, the cpu fan starts for 3 seconds and then stops, and then continue like this forever until I press the button for sveral second tu turn everything off.
    I tryed:
    3 different psu's
different type of ram in every slot (single and/or together)
Unlinked all from the mobo and put it out of the case with only psu attached.
    CMOS cleared
    Always same problem.
Now I RMA it, soon I'll receive a new one but I saw on the web that most users of this mobo had the boot loop problem, so I was hoping if it was mine that was faulty or is there a known Problem?
I work with this pc and I don't want to receive another one with the same problem.....
    Many thanks to all.
    Many thanks.

Funny thing. That very same thing happened to me on a Gigabyte P67 board a while ago. I ended up having to return the board, luckily I had purchased it at a Microcenter so that was easy to do and I went with the MSI I have now.
At the time I was not able to resolve it, but the symptoms were exactly the same. Doesn't mean you have the same problem or cause, but I had exactly that.
I would advise a number of things that all revolve around eliminating potential trouble spots entirely:
    - If you have 4 sticks of 4GB RAM, remove two of them (refer to your manual to know in which order to remove them; leave just one bank (2 sticks) populated.
If that doesn't help, swap the remaining 8GB with the 8GB you removed. That would diagnose a crude memory failure in one of the sticks.
    - Remove any hardware you can, including any extra sound/network card and your video card, and see if the power-on pattern changes.
    - Disconnect all external devices from USB, eSATA, even disconnect your regular SATA drives just to see if the pattern changes at all.
    - If you observe changes doing any of those things, you can hone in on the offending component.
    - If you are using an aftermarket heatsink that uses screws, make sure the heatsink is not wobbling because it came lose a little.
This is assuming you built it yourself and are familiar with handling the components and what precautions to take!

  • MSI x79a-gd65 (8d) pci problem

Hello i have an issue that i need some help with.
I have the X79a-gd65(8D) MOBO, and my system works normal overall. So now i used in the past a soundcard on my previous system: Auzentech x-Meridian 7.1 2g. But it was broke, and in the meantime i bought my new system + these cards are not easy to get in the Netherlands. But recently i got an hold on it again, but forgot that this card uses the old pci connector, and there are none on this MOBO.
So i searched for an PCIe > PCI connector. Got that now, all good u say. But sadly it won't work, bcs the bridge is detected in Windows. But if i connect the card to it, the mobo won't boot properly. It keeps hanging on the 94 on the led, and there won't come any screen. According to the manual this code is for the PCI bus Initialization. What makes sense ofc.
However the soundcard is working properly on my older system, also if i try it with the bridge. So am confused here, and don't know what to do, so if there is someone that has ideas or suggestions to solve this (even if it was on another MOBO) let me know pls.
    So summary:
    MOBO = x79a-gd65(8d)
Soundcard = Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1 2g with the older pci connection, working
PCIe > PCI bridge (connected on the PCIe x1 connector)
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate, does detect the bridge if standalone
But once soundcard is connected Mobo won't boot properly, no screen available bcs of this, and the led hangs on number 94 (PCI Bus Initialization)
Sorry for typo's, no native English.

Using a bridge messes with the pci clock. This affects audio output (skipping and the likes). It happens on every platform that uses a pci>pcie bridge under specific circumstances and it can't be fixed. The only real solution is to get another sound card.
The meridian is one hell of a card but it requires native pci support, without bridging, to work properly.
x79 supports pci, but pci is a legacy internal slot standard. Unlike external devices that you might still use on your new PC (like firewire cameras and the likes) you normally get newish internal devices.
Anyway, some recent pcie offerings from ASUS and Creative are semi-decent, but the only noteworthy sound cards currently on the market are the Soundblaster ZxR and the Asus Xonar Phoebus (including the solo version which lacks the extras). Those 2 are even be better than the meridian when it comes to sound quality.
Also, you could ebay the Meridian since a lot of people who want supreme audio on legacy systems will want to get one, even if overpriced. You could then use the money to buy one of the above.
My suggestion is to keep the Meridian for your old system since it's hard to get a good reliable pci sound card for cheap these days. But you'll of course need the $ to get a card for the new system.
Maybe iam just lucky, but for me it al works like an charm. No stuttering or delays, and it just works great, and hearing the sound i used to have like 3-4 years ago I can really find no issues atm.
@ Froggy: I used this one bcs i wanted an extra slot just in case and a flexible cable http://www.delock.com/produkte/F_377_PCIe-x1_41341/merkmale.html?setLanguage=en. I have the CM Storm Trooper case and planned it originaly for an vertical opening this case has, so that my other PCIe slots would stay free and available for expanding if needed. Would be a close call, to see if it would reach the spot, but sadly not. Also have seen other ones from like Startech, but none that had an long flexible cable. There where a few on ebay from China with like 15 cm what would be long enough, but that would take several weeks for delivery. Also not fond of extending the flexible cable and solder it, bcs of the very likely signal loss then + it is a real  job and u need minitiny equipement for it So if u want a flexible cable, make sure u get the right length cable. By some creative modding and some usable stuff i could fit it in my case. Only my mic entrance is not available bcs it's just in my case, but since i use the front panel for mic iam ok with it.
Just an headsup, that u make sure the cable's u need are proper O also, besides the 4pin flopy connector for the bridge, for this MOBO the 4 pin molex on the bottom beneath the last PCIe must be powered or it also causes issues. So for other mobo's that would have an power slot to get extra power to the PCIe slots, it might be required for stuff to work. That u don't remove it bcs u need the room if u have multiple cards and extra stuff....

My board will not boot when I add 16gb of ram. I upgraded the bios to n5. It seem when I add a stick to the to the black slot I believe it is DIMM 2 with will continuously boot loop. I have tried all of the sticks in various combinations and my system runs stable with 12 gb of ram. It just doesn't seem to work when I put a stick in that particular slot. My ram is Gskill ripjawX 4gbx4. I am running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and I have xmp in the bios on profile 1. My ram is running at 2133 mhz. Any Ideas? Is my board screwed up?

I don't know what the F I just did but it all works now! I put two sticks in slots 2 and 4 and it booted up just fine. Then I added a stick to slot 1 and it booted up. So then I added the final stick to slot 3 and it booted up right away. I enabled xmp and it seems to be running fine at 2133 mhz. I'm 100% certain I tried this combination yesterday and it continuously rebooted. I would like to find out the problem but I'm incredibly happy this works as I have very little time to mess with it.
Sooner or later you'll get into troubles again.
Intel Core i7 2600k has beed designed to work with 32GB DDR3-1066 or 16GB DDR3-1333.
The (stock) Max Memory Bandwidth of this processor is 21 GB/s.
In other words, 16GB DDR3-1333 in dual channel.
However, in the "real world" it works just fine with 16GB DDR3-1600 in dual channel.
But that 25.6GB max bandwidth is all this processor is able to do.
To conclude: above DDR3-1600 the performaces boost is close to ZERO.

  • X79-GD65 (8D) and i7 3820 issues

    Hello members
    I recently purchased a MSI X79-GD65 (8D) motherboard and an Intel i7 3820 CPU.
I have installed 4 sticks of 16GB memory.
When I turn the computer on, everything looks normal on the motherboard, except I get no video (have tried two video cards).
The CPU phase LED shows 3 bars, no digits on the debug motherboard LCD.
I have noticed that it is impossible to turn the power off and the PSU needs to be switched off.
From what I am reading it seems I have an old BIOS, (the chip has a red dot) and this is incompatible with the 3820.
I was wondering if anybody knows a workaround to allow me to get into BIOS to reflash the chip.
The fact that the BIOS chips are surface soldered doesn't help either.
    Any ideas appreciated.

    it is dead to me.
there are some serious key flaws with MSI.
Why is the BIOS chip soldered surface mount, if BIOS are always outdated, why not install a socket BIOS chip, this would then be a very straight forward fix
Why do I need a CPU installed to flash my BIOS, ASUS has this feature on their motherboard, this could easily be fixed in this case
The RMA website for Australia is non functional, try navigating http://au.msi.com/service/wheretobuy/ you get a JavaScript error.
I reread the manual which points to the url http://www.msi.com/service/cpu-support (which doesn't even work because of the missing trailing forward slash) and it pointed to the url http://www.msi.com/product/mb/X79A-GD65--8D-.html#/?div=CPUSupport.
Nothing on that page even hints there may be incompatibility issues.
