Msi Z68 GD80 (G3) strange Cpu Temp.reading

Hello all,this is my first post here.
I just purchased an Msi Z68 GD80(G3) and I think I have strange cpu temp. reading as seen in the Hw monitor.My i5 2500k idle/load CPU temp. is equal or higher than core temps which is strange for an intel cpu,as an intel user for years I believe it should be 10-12C lower than core temps.(my previous mobo was giga p67 ud5 and never had this issue).Double checked my cpu cooler-spire thermax 2-no problems.Updated to last bios-no change-Any recommendations/solutions welcomed here.
Rest of my system as follows:
Asus gtx560
4*2 gb gskill ddr3 ram
1tb samsung hd
high power 650w power supply     

Have you checked what the CPU temp shows in BIOS just after start up ? How does that compare with the HW temp.
HW Monitor's temp interpretation may just not be calibrated for the specific Fintek chip used on your MB. Maybe you want to check with the HW monitor home site as well.
How do the temps compare with whats read/displayed in Speedfan, Real Temp or Core Temp ?
If they are all similar, then it could just be a badly calibrated sensor on the board as well.
Do some comparative testing and see if there are any differences at all.
Also check with MSI technical to see if they are aware of a general tendency with regards to this, or whether a BIOS revision may have addressed such an issue. >>How to contact MSI.<<
Just recheck your heatsink seating again and maybe even reseat the CPU and do a full socket pin inspection at the same time.

    I started my pc with overlock option from BIOS. the cpu speed raised from 3.4 to 4.2  but motherboard  is too high temp while overlocked.please check the picture and tell me if those temp are normal ? pc is idle at that picture.those temps are normal ? (room temp under 25c).
    my second problem is when i stress test with msi extreme tuning software,max cpu temp became 67c and mb temp became 65-66-67c.  (no overlock) (i use intel 2500k stok fan) (thermal compound pasted)(cooler master haf942)

     Download that for monitoring info. Seems to be better than CPUID HWMonitor especially for voltages.
     Here's a screenshot of mine and I don't have any problem with it. Yours should be near the same. It seems you are making an issue out of nothing re: MB/system temperature.
     This is for my Z77 (I know it's not same MB as yours but temps should be similar) and you should be near the same. By the way use Alt + PrtScn so you only get screenshot of active window instead of entire screen.
     Temps in BIOS will show higher than when it's running in Windows environment in case you didn't know that.

  • Ram problem! (msi z68-gd80,g3)

    Hey there.
    have a problem with my new ripjaw x series ram 1866. ( and all other ram)
    Tried installing all 16 gb of it earlier today and apparently only the first blue and black ram slot work.
    Before i updated my bios to the newest one the pc wouldn't even load it would automaticly restart, but after getting the newest version of bios the computer keeps running but no signal to the screen.
    I tried mem test on all 4 sticks by using them on the first two slots 1 black and 1 blue and there are no errors.

  • MSI Z68-GD80 (G3) Big Problems

    So I have gotten my MSI Z68-GD80 (G3) Motherboard 1050 Watt powersupply from corsair 16GB of ram Corsair Vengence GTX 580 Twin Frozr II 2600K and a H80. At Stock Speeds My computer just frezzes in till i reset my computer or it automatically restarts and i have been losing Work Info because of this problem. In Prime 95 i ran it for a hour no Errors or anything. When i Enable OC genie Prime 95 Crashed in 30 minutes my computer freezes loud noise comes out of my headphones. Then i try pressing reset button no respond so i had to turn of my powersupply. btw my highest temp on the core was 55C. This usally happenes when i play games like: MW2,WAW,Crossfire,CSS,TF2,and so On. Btw im on the latest UEFI and drivers i believe since i used the LiveUpdate.
    If i have to RMA this Board can I drop it off at MSI Viking Road Richmond I Live Near there. 

    Have you tried it without OC Genie ? What are the results ?  Which BIOS are you using ?
    Only insert one memory module. Do a CMOS clear >>Clear CMOS Guide<<  Remove the battery for a while.
    Ensure that EuP2013, Spread Spectrum and XMP are disabled.
    Retest with only one memory module.

  • Z87-G43 Gaming - Random rebooting & strange CPU temps

    Howdy.
    Since building this system I've been having constant problems with system reboots. It seems completely random, but I've had a few this morning which is unusual (and I hope; unique!). It can be doing anything, or even nothing, for days and suddenly the power goes completely for a few seconds (I'm almost certain it isn't the power supply itself dropping, other things plugged into the same surge protector are still running).
    When it returns windows log just shows Error 6008, with no other information. It happens infrequently enough for me to think I've cured it by doing something suddenly to get a surprise again. Things I've tried:
    Re-installing OS (several times!).
    Changing/stopping startup programs and services
    Unplugging USB devices (for a while I honestly thought it was an iPhone cable! There seemed to be some correlation between it being plugged in and not plugged in. Not so).
    Updating BIOS
    Using Microsoft drivers instead of MSI supplied drivers (went back to MSI)
    Using the Qualcomm Athero drivers for LAN instead of Killer
    Monitoring CPU temps (see below!)
    Tuning BIOS
    etc, etc.
    It is really frustrating, there is very little evidence to point towards one thing. It can go a week without rebooting, including lots of heavy gaming, and then I'll be doing something non-CPU intensive (i.e. browsing, or typing) and it suddenly restarts, then maybe another later that day, then another two days later, then nothing for a week again. Arggg! The one thing I have noticed, is that it rarely, if ever, goes down when doing something very CPU/GPU intensive, so I doubt it is thermal or that the PSU isn't coping.
    Having said that, this morning has been a bit unusual, it has restarted more than ever (3 times I think, maybe more when I wasn't sat in front of it, I haven't checked the logs).  The last time I fired up openhardwaremonitor and it reports something really odd, it says one core is running at nearly 125c and another is running at -35c . Speed fan is also showing these temps (but not Core temp, which shows them as being around 30c on each core). I totally understand that this is a misreading/bug, but it makes me wonder if the OS or motherboard is also misreading these temperatures and cutting the power supply?
    I have found others with the same problem with the same motherboard (although to be fair, I was searching for the problem with the motherboard specified). Anybody else seeing these problems with this motherboard? Any suggestions?
    Any help would be very much appreciated, and I thank you in advance.

    Every other time (apart from today) it is instant, like a reset, this morning when it went off I honestly thought it had died, but it came back about 30 seconds later.
    TBH; I'd rather it had died! I know it sounds like strange logic, but at least I could have tested individual components and found out exactly what was wrong and had it replaced while still fairly new.
    Event Viewer is just full of: Error 6008 "The previous system shutdown at <time> on ‎<date> was unexpected" (logged when it comes back, nothing significant before the reboot).

  • MSI have finally commented on the Temp reading in there new 3.4 bios

    Well like most of us that have upgraded to the 3.4 bios I have now very low CPU temps.
    So low infect that I now no longer need my air condoner anymore as my PC's CPU is running so cold on air that it cools the whole room down for me..

  • Another Odd CPU Temp Reading

    My CPU temp shows 66C-77C in the BIOS and also on every temp program I have tried, and I mean them All. When I take a temp reading with my VOM it shows a cushy 38C at the CPU and HS and feels very cool to the touch. I have not heard any problems with the clawhammer core..what gives???

    Took It all Apart once again and triple checked everything. It has to be a BIOS related problem on the KT8M-ILSR Mobo. Cannot figure out what else it can be.

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80 B6 Max CPU voltage 1.27Volts????

    So I have updated to the new B6 bios but unfortunately cannot set CPU voltage higher than 1.27 volts in bios to overclock -.-.
    PC specs:

    Use version 11.5... It works good.
    Also, on many games with Bulldozer, some motherboards will BSOD, or on the 990fxa-gd80 you get insanely low performance. Such titles include Shogun 2, Portal 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and many more. On the ASUS Sabertooth, a user was able to correct all of his problems by rolling back his BIOS to version 0705, but that doesn't really help us here much, other than to say hopefully MSI will also be able to correct these issues in a BIOS update soon...
    As for me, I'm shopping for Intel/Nvidia parts now. I'm fed up with this crap. It's been one thing right after another with my AMD build....Never had any issues with any other system I've ever built in my life (been building systems since 386/486 days; over 15 years), but this one has just been a nightmere...Nothing against MSI - I love their products and hoping to get at least a couple gtx580 Lightning Xtremes, if not also one of their fine Z68 boards.

  • Good news for Winchester users and CPU temp. reading after S3 suspend

    Bios 3.95 seems to solve all my previous problem with CPU temperature readings after S3 suspend state.
    Now the temperatures are after S3 the same as before (15 degree C lower). So Speedfan's control of fans is more precise now. My CPU fan is stopped all the time, in case of warning temperature 50 deg.C, all fans go on 100% (including CPU). With this BIOS I am for the first time fully satisfied with this board.
    Cool'n'Quiet is working and S3 as well. I haven't noticed any problem yet.

    no, very simple. Just turn off your system, unplug the machine, use a paperclip or something similiar, pry the bios chip upwards and pull out (make note of which way the notch is facing), insert the replacement chip, viola! Now you have pretty much the MSI oem board. I think I've heard some boards are red or something (the MSI boxed boards), unless that was an older revision, but other than that, everything else is the same. The only main thing is, if you switch out the bios chips, you can no longer run the disc image to restore the hard drive, which isn't a biggie to me, since I purchased an OEM copy of Windows XP MCE, and I also have and run Windows XP Pro.

  • MSI Z68-GD80 (G3) SpeedStep Issues

    I have my 2600k overclocked to 4.5 ghz.
    i have got the intel speedstep enabled.
    When i load up CPU-Z my 2600k at idle goes to 1.6ghz but than after a second it goes back to 4.5 ghz.
    What settings do i have to enable for this not to happen.
    I am on the latest Bios Version.

    If you leave the PC alone for a couple of minutes, you will see that it eventually settles down in an idle state. There are usually quite a few start up programs that keep the CPU busy and will cause the load fluctuations, thats normal.

  • PCIE 3.0 test with MSI Z68A-GD80 G3 :)

    The Z68A-GD80 G3 is MSI’s first motherboard with PCIE 3.0 connectivity. Currently there are no PCIE 3 devices available yet but later on we can test its performance by using a PCIE SSD. Aside from this, the board has also a new UEFI Bios named “Click Bios II” which for me is way better than the previous version. 
    Before we take a closer look on the board, let’s check out the package first.
    Box design is a bit the same as the GD80 B3 version before.  Once you open it up, all main features of the said board are enumerated
    Extreme Power Design, Military Class II Components (SFC, Hi-C Caps, Multi Bios), 3 PCIEx16 Slots, Super Charger and OC Genie II
    For the bundled accessories, you have the same old story – Manual, Software Disc, four SATA cables, two Molex to SATA power connectors & SLI Bridge. Then for some extras - PCI USB 3.0 two ports bracket, guide headers for faster and easy connectivity and lastly voltage check points.
    Next, the “Mainboard”.  By physically looking at it and by comparing it side by side against the Z68A-GD80 B3 motherboard. You won’t find any difference except for the PCIE X16 locks. It has also the same black and blue color theme, two vrm heatsinks connected by a flat heatpipe and  V-Check points.
    Moving closer to the board you have 8 Power Pins to power up the processor, 2 PCI slots, 2 PCIE x1 slots for devices such as TV Tuners or Audio Cards. 2 PCIE Gen3 & 1 PCIE Gen2  x16 Slots. With one VC connected at the top most slot, speed will be @ x16. If both top and middle are used, it will be @ x8/x8. Lastly, by using the 3rd PCIEx16 Gen2 slot. You have x8/x8/x4. It would also disable certain onboard devices such as eSATA Port, Sata 7, one onboard front USB 3.0, two PCI Slots and firewire. So if possible avoid using the last VC slot. 
    At the top most PCIE x1 area. You will find a 6-pin power connector. This will provide more juice/power for multi-GPU setups.
    Next, at the bottom part of the board. You have the Easy Buttons (Power and Reset) and the popular one button “OC Genie”. The red colored USB header is for the Super Charger while the blue is a regular USB 3.0.  For the SATA Connectors  you have a total of 7. 4 regular SATA 3GB/s, 2 SATA 6GB/s controlled by Intel chipset and another SATA 6GB/s by Marvell.
    Wrapping things up, we have now the IO terminal ports. Starting from the left we have combo PS2 port and SPDIF Optical Out. Clear CMOS Button, e-SATA port running under Marvell, 2 USB 2.0 and Firewire ports controlled by Via. Moving across, 2 Gigabit Lan by Realtek 8111E, 2 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 run under NEC D720200 controller. Next, we have DVI and HDMI output connections and 6 analog audio ports by Realtek ALC892.
    Once you are into the bios, you will find the new and improved Click Bios. Nice and professional looking, faster navigation and easier to use.
    To test the performance of the new PCIE Gen3 technology, we will be using this Photofast PCIE SSD device http://www.photofast.tw/comboproducts.asp?pid=1.
    We will be connecting the PCIE SSD device on the GD80’s Gen3 and Gen2 slots and compare the results using the disk benchmark software ATTO.  I ran the benchmark 9 times for the two set of tests.
    System Configuration as follows:
    Processor:  Intel Core i7 2600K at default stock speed
    Memory: Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 2x2GB DDR3 2133MHz
    SSD: OCZ Vertex 2
    Motherboard: MSI Z68A-GD80 G3
    Softwares: CPU-Z 1.58, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit with SP1, Latest Atto Software 1.47 I think.

    Did you have your previous board's BIOS set to AHCI or IDE ? You need to set this BIOS the same.
    Firstly only insert one RAM module in the slot closest to the CPU. Remove the rest. Then do full CMOS clear >>Clear CMOS Guide<<  also remove the MB battery.
    What BIOS do you currently have ? The initial BIOS releases were plagued by CPU throttling which have been fixed in the cyrrent beta BIOS releases.

  • PowerMac G5 DP CPU temps?

    Hello all,
    I am curious to get some feedback in regards to CPU temperature of the PowerMac G5s out there and whether or not I have an issue with my machine and should take it in to the Apple Store.
    I have my processor performance set to 'Highest' to minimize the fans going into overdrive (aka 'takeoff mode!").
    At idle, my CPU temps read:
    CPU A: 57.2/135.0 (ºC/ºF)
    CPU B: 69.6/156.2 (ºC/ºF)
    However, if I start taxing the system they jump up considerably, and there is an even greater gap between CPU B's temp over CPU A.
    These are the extremes I have gotten when running the processors at 100%:
    CPU A: 64.4/148.0 (ºC/ºF)
    CPU B: 88.7/191.7 (ºC/ºF)
    As you see, it jumped from 12ºC warmer up to 24ºC. Is this a serious issue to worry about? I have cleaned out the case and checked for any coolant leaks of which there are none visible. From other research online, it seems normal for the temps to be off +/-5ºC, usually with A being warmer than B.
    Would a Thermal Re-calibration at the Genius Bar help things? I would just like to check others experiences and see if this is something I should pay closer attention to and in more detail.

    Thank you for the links. It does seem like it's going to run a minimum of $800 just for the processor anywhere I look. What worries me about that is still having the liquid cooled system and the many issues I have be reading about lately with them.
    As a designer, actually I have had LCD monitors for over 4 years now at every job I have had. I also use an LCD at home. I actually prefer them. I know there are color differences, but they have come such a long way that I'd hate to go back to a CRT again, so big and bulky. Again, this is just my personal preference.
    I do love my PowerMac which why I am disappointed with the issues I've had with it. Not little issues either, the most expensive issues. Plus, with the new OS Snow Leopard possibly dropping the PowerPC line, I'd rather be looking ahead versus treading water with another used PowerMac, even if I could save and reuse all the extras I've put into it.
    The more research I do, the more I am leaning towards the iMac 3.06GHz model and max it out to 4GB with aftermarket RAM. As long as I can get 1-2 working years out of it, I can then hand it down to my wife and then make another serious investment into a new MacPro.
    I know you can't expand the iMac, other than adding more RAM, possibly putting in a larger HD. Although I have a 160GB in my G5 that I use maybe half of. I also have a LaCie 250GB external where I store most all of my things, so a 500GB internal on the iMac would be plenty for me right now.
    As she is a very basic user (internet, music, word processing, etc.) she would still have plenty of computer after it being only 2 years old. She uses my 6 year old Ti PowerBook G4 now and it suits her just fine. (+mini rant here+...how is it my laptop which has traveled many miles has lasted twice as long as my more expensive chained to a desk in a controlled environment machine!?)
    As she is finishing school working on her RN degree, I think the iMac is the best case scenario for now (very limited budget) and then when we can save up the extra cash, I'll just get a whole new system. Plus I'll be able to use her to get a student discount and save a few bucks and get a free iPod touch!
    As for the Mac Genius, he told me it would cost $85 to run diagnostics as I was out of warranty. He ended up not running any as he told me based on everything I had done and the results I had gotten from my own hardware test, it would only indicate the same results there and doing the re-calibration would not fix anything.

    My idle temps are now 26c, down from 34c. That's 8C. I can have Winamp, IE and messenger running and CPU temps don't get by 29c.  Once i fire up, SETI though...I get back my regular Load temps at 39c.
    Some of you probably know about it, already....here's for thousand others that don't.
    This tweak can drop your idle CPU temps down as much as 8c, maybe more...depending on your system.
    First thing you need to do is download WPCRSET & WPCREDIT.
    They're both in this zip.
    - Extract to a directory.
    - Run "INSTDD.EXE". Click Install. When done, you will be prompted for restart. Hit Yes! -
    - Then go back to the folder with extracted files, and open "WPCREDIT.EXE"
    - A ms-dos like window will pop-up. Move the blinking block (with arrow keys or your mouse pointer) until it says Offset 6F at the buttom. Now, click on the two digit number where it says "HEX", and change it to 1F (The Hex for Offset 6F would have previously been 9F, 8F or something else). Hit Set.
    Your idle temps should now start falling.
    You would have to do this hack/tweak everytime you rebooted your computer if it wasn't for WPCRSET.
    - Go to directory and run "WPCRSET.EXE"
    - Look at the top of the window: Enable select "Start" and make sure Device is on "enable"
    - Then click Add. Enter 6F for the register, and 1F for the data
    - Click Ok and you'll be prompted to restart.
    Once, you rebooted, open WCREDIT again and see if the 6F register is still on 1F. If it is, then that's it..You're all done.
    Here's a Screenie of how it should be:
    This only brings your idle temps down, and not your full load temps
    It should work for all nforce2s, and use at your own risk
    Check your nf7-s for CPU Disconnect. Most other nforce2 motherboards do not have this feature in the bios...so this tweak might prove useful.
    READ THE WHOLE THREAD BEFORE TRYING THIS!
    If you run a Distributed Computing project...then obviously this would be of no use to you

That's why this tweak only works on the idle temp and doesn't change anything on the load temp. Ofcourse as soon as the CPU power is needed the deactivated part will become active again, so it should have any influence on the performance of the CPU.  
    Strangely, my full load temp has decreased 6º C degrees too.

  • Random crashing - MSI Z68A-GD80 Intel Z68

    Hi All,
    I bought the following recently from Aria - Gladiator Z68 Core i7 2600K 4.60GHz 8GB Overclocked Bundle, however when purchased it the deal included the MSI Z68A-GD80 B3. Now before i start i have never had anything over clocked before and thus have no clue at how it all works, therefore apologies for my newbieness in advance!
    My rig:
    Mobo: MSI Z68A-GD80 Intel Z68
    Chip: i7-2600K Overclocked @ 4.60GHz
    Cooler:Be Quiet! Dark Rock Advanced CPU Cooler.
    Ram: 8GB Mushkin Ridgeback #996987 (2x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz 9-11-9-27
    GPU:MSI GeForce GTX 580 Twin Frozr II
    PSU: Cant remember the name but its 1200w
    SSD: Crucial 256GB RealSSD C300
    HDD: 2TB Samsung
    OS: Windows 64 bit ultimate
    When it works it works excellently, but every now and again the system will just shut off. A couple of seconds will pass and it will restart itself, I don't press a thing or touch anything. It wont boot as it keeps restarting. The only thing that will work is if i keep the power button presses, boot in safe mode, shut down and restart the system.
    The only thing i have done regarding the above is change the CPU speed as in it was set to run at 4.6GHz permanently so I changed it so that when its idle the speed reduces to around 1.6GHZ. Outcasst thought about doing the same with the voltage but the only options in the BIOS are to either set it to a fixed voltage or Auto. When i set it to Auto to see if that helped the computer wouldn't boot so i changed it back again immediately.
    It has been formatted in the last week if that makes a difference. But it was happening before i formatted it too.
    Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I haven't contacted Aria as yet, thought i would post here first.
