MSN Messenger and Address Book don't work in one account

I recently succumbed to pressure from my daughter to set up MSN Messenger for her, but couldn't make it work in her account. A window appeared for reporting the problem to Microsoft, and when I looked in More Information, it seemed to be something to do with Address Book. Crashed Module Name and Blame Module Name both said Address Book. When I tried opening Address Book separately, the Menu bar appeared but trying to click on anything just resulted in the revolving beach ball. There are five accounts on our iMac, and in all the others, both Messenger and Address Book open fine. Does this require drastic action, like deleting my daughter's account and setting up a new one? Or are there any preferences that could be trashed to sort it out? She has also reported problems with Safari, but I haven't checked that one out.

ProwessLegacy,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Based on your description, if you refuse to reinstall the system again, may I suggest an Archive and Install as an alternative. It can preserve user and network settings with minimal disruption to your current installation.
You will have to reapply subsequent updates but it will be less of hassle than digging around for replacements for unknown missing components.

  • Deleted sync framework, now ical and address book don't work

In an attempt to get rid of all the isync and .mac things on my mac I deleted some sync files that I need. I deleted the sync framework and sync services out of my system/library folder. Now ical and address book won't open. The crash log says it needs the syncservices framework and privateframework. Could somebody help me out as I obviously need those programs. I tried copying those file from my g4 imac to my intel but that didn't work. I refuse to reinstall the system again. (I make lots of mistakes, but I gotta learn, right?) Help is appreciated. Thanks

  • Bookmarks and Address Book don't sync in my iPAD

I have an iPad and Address Book and Safari Bookmarks stopped syncing. Any idea what to do. I have deleted my mobileme account twice, rebuilt it and reset also mobileme data twice. nothing helps.

The iPad does have a number of requirements for the MPEG-4 formatted video. If it's h.264 encoded (that is, an MPEG-4 file that adheres to the profile specified in section h.264 of the MPEG standard), it can be up to 1080p @ 30fps, otherwise for all other variations of MP4, the limit is 640x480 @ 30 fps and 2.5 Mbps. Audio maxes out at 160 kbps/channel 48kHz and in the AAC-LC format.
In iTunes, you can coerce a video to an iPad-compatible format using Advanced > Create iPad or Apple TV Version.

  • Mail v. 5.3 and Address Book Won't Work from Time Machine Reinstall

I installed a new harddrive in my MacPro 15" (early 2011) running OS X 10.7.5.  I successfully reinstalled OS X10.7.5 and all my software/files from Time Machine.  However, I get messages on Mail v. 5.3 (1283/1278) and Address Book that "you can't use this version" with Mac OS X v 10.7.5 (Build 11G63) and I should check with the developer. Everything is up to date regarding updates.  Can someone help with this problem please?  Thanks.

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.

  • Mail and Address Book doesn't work together!!!

Since I converted addresses from Filemaker 7 to Address Book, the automatic fill in, in Mail doesn't work anymore.
The option: "fill in address automaticly" is active in the preference menu in Mail.
The problem feels not consequent, this means; some of the addresses are shown up in mail, others don't. I cannot find out where to search for the problem.
Who knows which file I can delete or any other solutions?????

You can check by dragging ~(YourHome)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist to the desktop. Then relaunch AddressBook.
You could do the same with "com.apple.Mail.plist" but it contains all email account settings and general mail preferences, so you will have to set up your account info again.
Also you might try deleting ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook.

  • Synching Blackberry and Address Book which  just works: impossible dream?

I've got a Blackberry 8200g which synchs well with my office Lotus Notes setup. I'd like to be able to synch the office contacts book (but not email) with my home Mac's Address Book, with synching of Calendar a bonus, but not crucial.
PocketMac Synchmanager kept bringing over only some information, and only in one direction (i.e. not onto the work computer), and seemed to forget some of the information it had brought over previously.
Missing Synch seems to require me to turn off wireless synchronisation every time I want to synch the mac with the blackberry.
Just wondered if it was feasible to find a piece of software that just works - these shouldn't be complex databases to try and mesh - without tweaks etc and without costing the earth.
Any ideas from wiser folks who've been down this road already?

Not sure if this will help with your sync issues or not, but take a look at the link below.

  • Mail and address book don't sync

    HI,
When I send and email to a new address I don’t usually create a new contact for this email.
Over the time I probably have 200 emails in my address book without names or any other details.
Occasionally address book seems to assign all of these emails under one contact, so for example Joe Smith will have 200 email addresses.
Therefor when I send an email to one of the addresses that have not been added to my address book (but now auto assigned to Joe Smith) it will come up in the 'to' box as Joe Smith when the email address is for Joe Bloggs.
This is very annoying as it’s my business email account and cannot afford to miss send emails.
Also problem number 2, I can temporarily resolve the problem by going to address book and removing the name from this contact with all of the emails. But for some reason when you type and email address in to mail that name that it was assigned to still is seen in the brackets and I cannot get rid of this.
So the answers I’m after is
1, How can I stop it assigning all of the emails to one contact?
2, How can I change what names appear in the brackets in mail?
    Thanks for any help Jamie

The SIM card does not activate the iPhone, an account associated with a SIM activates the iPhone. If you use another ATT SIM when you activate the iPhone the account associated with that SIM will be upgraded to the iPhone service requirements and cost more money. Apple is not unlocking the iPhone, if you wish to use it in another country you pay very expensive international roaming through the ATT account that the iPhone is activated with.

  • PlayBook local calendar and address book no longer works

I took delivery of a brand new BBC Bold 9900 today. The setup went very well and all seems to be working fine, including the bridge. I am registered with Gmail and have also used my Gmail address and password as a BB registration ID. My PlayBook calendar and contacts worked fine before as I had set it all up with my Torch 9800. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Preview and space bar don't work for one subdirectory

i have a directory d:/gaikoku/portugal and when i try to look at an image in it, the image does not show up in the preview window and using the space bar does not enlarge the image. if i change "portugal" to "portugall" everything works, so clearly there is a corrupt file someplace. i have de-installed and re-installed photoshop without this changing. help! steve

Perhaps there is a problem with Bridge's Preferences. A reinstall would not touch those. So see if a reset works:
Start Adobe Bridge and immediately press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) until the Reset Settings dialog box appears. Select all three options--Reset Preferences, Reset Standard Workspaces, and Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache--and then click OK.
By the way, "gaikoku" is Japanese for "foreign country", which makes me wonder if your language settings are other than US English.
Windows uses backslashes \ to separate directory names d:\gaikoku\portugal, but that might be a typing error.
But let's get the preferences out of the way and see if that fixes it.

  • Drag and Drop Apps to and from Dock, doesn't work for one account?

    Hi there,
I have 2 accounts on my Macbook, one of them is my main account which is admin and nothing is wrong with it. The second account though is also admin but I cannot drag and drop applications to and from the dock. I can open the program, hold left click down till it pops up with options and in which you can untick Keep in Dock. Which would be fine but as soon as the computer restarts or I log out then in again, the application reappears. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.
Note that I have deleted both plist files from library/preferences and I have also enabled parental controls and ticked the allow users to modify the dock option. I also tried downloading Onyx and setting it up through there but it was a no go. Anyway, if anyone has any idea then that would be awesome.
    Cheers

Ok, you can drag applications from your Applications and Utilities Folders to make a "alias" (aka shortcut) in the Dock, but if you drag the icon off and drop it, it "poof's" away as your deleting the alias. The program itself isn't in the Dock at all at any time.

Right, when you run a program from where ever, it places a alias icon in the Dock, which you then right click and choose to keep the alias in the Dock which survives reboots and logouts/in as normal.
If you right click and choose "open at log-in" the program will automatically run when you restart or log back into the account.

I don't see any problem, other than your not knowing the icons in the Dock are aliases.
You should set the same user controls and preferences on the second admin as the first and your problems should disappear.
OnyX is a great program, I recommend it highly, but I don't see it fixing your problem in this case. Unless there is something your not being clear on.

  • How to move Mail and Address book content from 10.3 emac to 10.5 iMac

How do I move Mail and Address book content from my old 10.3 emac to my new 10.5 Leopard iMac directly, or do I have to move the names etc, one by one?
    Richard

I cannot find a migration assistant. I have copied the Mail and Address Book applications over from 10.3 to 10.5 and tried using mailboxes import, but 10.5 Mail will not accept any of the options. The same for address book. Can you give more specific instructions?
The applications, Mail and Address Book, don't actually store your data in the application. So, moving the applications over to your new computer will have no useful effect and could be detrimental if you replaced the newer versions with the old.
Migration Assistant is in you Utilities folder and should have asked to be run during the installation.
Your Mail data is stored in yourUserName/Library/Mail. The Address Book data is stored in yourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. If your new installation is blank with no data, you can actually replace those directories on the 10.5 version with the old. For Mail, you also have to get the com.apple.mail.plist file from your old username/Library/Preferences/ folder and put it in the new 10.5 folder of the same name. Once that is done, when you open Mail and Address Book, they will update the data to the new format.
Migration Assistant will do all of this for you.
EDIT: Based on roam's comments, you may have to move the Mail manually. You can also just bring the Mail directory over to the 10.5 machine and use Mail's Import command to get all the mail out of the old Mail directory.

  • Hide function in Login Items doesn't work for iChat and Address Book app.

There is a problem with the hide function for iChat and Address Book application in Login Items. If you go to System Preferences, click on Login Items, add the iChat and Address Book application to the Login Items, activate the hide function for iChat and Address Book application and restart your Mac iChat and Address Book application will start with opening a window. Normally this shouldn't happen if the hide function in Login Items is activated for iChat and Address Book application.

    Hi,
Your link refers to changes to 10.6.3 prior release as tested by Developers.
The numbering system tells us that. (Build 10Dxxx).
Therefore it is an Update and not an Upgrade, therefore no-one is going to get charged.
If the article is the so called Release Notes then they mention nothing about correcting any issue with Login Items Hiding.
If you think an issue is being missed there is a place to report that, from this icon view list http://www.apple.com/feedback/ which includes Hardware and Software.
I personally have not tested Login Items Hiding as I tend to think there is no point in having an App open if it not on the Desktop.
As Kappy pointed out there was little progress on a similar issue with Leopard.
This could be interpreted that Apple feel that the issue does not effect enough people or that other issues are more important.
As anyone and everyone can report Issues and contribute their ideas to the OS and it's improvement via the Feedback links it would seem to be a question of enough people bringing it to Apple's Attention.
I would tend to work on Issues that stopped an App functioning first, linked with integration with the OS and any changes to the major parts of it such as a Quicktime.
Lesser issues that maybe more cosmetic in appearance would tend to fall down my list of things to do.
Presumably Apple have a grading system on such things that may not fit with either of our views.
As Apple don't reveal any details about the OS Updates or even Upgrades then anything any of us think we interpret as a pattern is just that - an interpretation.
Consequently anything we say on the subject is then likely to be seen as speculation under the Terms of Use of these Boards.

Updated iPad and now bookmarks don't work         Safari says address invalid for the bookmark symbol

Clear Safari. Close Safari. Reset your iPad.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear Cookies and Data.
To close an app, drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the Safari app then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
