MSN Messenger through iChat?

Hi guys, am a new iMac user and I just wanted to know if there was a way to setup msn messenger, maybe as jabber, in iChat and how to do so.
The only reason to do this is to be able to use the great iSight with my friends who use msn messenger since msn messenger for mac doesnt have such an option for iSight.
Am currently using aMSN, which provides support for iSight but it doesnt allow sound, so i cant hear them and they cant hear me.
Any suggestion?
Thank you.

You may wish to also cross post in one of the iChat AV Forums where the iChat users hang out.
Good luck

  • MSN Messenger on iChat

    Hello all.
Just got my first Mac and I'm still a little lost.
On windows I always used MSN Messenger. All my friends use it.
I already downloaded it for Mac, but it is very limited in comparison. The biggest problem is that it does not support video.
I was wondering if there's a way to talk to MSN Messenger users using iChat.
If it isn't possible, maybe there's another software that will do it.
    thanks
    Leo

    Hi
For MSN look at aMSN(video but no audio) http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14200
And Mercury(video but no audio) http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14970
To use MSN with jabber see http://allforces.com/2005/05/06/ichat-to-msn-through-jabber/ no video or audio.
Your best bet between Mac and PC is Skype

  • Yahoo and MSN Messenger in iChat

    Hi
I want to use iChat for Yahoo and MSN Messenger. I want to use it mainly for the Video chat feature in iChat.
    thanks

    Hi,
If you can get the Yahoo IM app for Mac to work (It is still in Beta and has been for Years) then it is the only direct way.
Tokbox is a Web Browser Based Chat site that allows you to use your Camera. (It uses the Flash Plug-in)
It has the advantage in that you can link in your existing Buddy Lists.
Mebeam is a less formal site that does similar (Lees the Buddy List Linking)
The MSN App will only Video Chat if you are linked to the correct Microsoft Server (I forget the name exactly)
ProteusX and Adium are both essentially text Based Mac Apps that can join multiple IM Services.
I believe Adium now uses a link to MeBeam to do Video Chats (I have not tested this)
See my Comments to Mackural about what is possible with GoogleTalk names.

  • MSN Messenger on iChat 3.0

    Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone can help me to integrate my msn messenger contact list into iChat. I' have set up a jabber account via spark and attempted to login into jabber via iChat but when i do so, my contacts are not visible. Also when i login in with jabber, my contacts are messed up, for all of them, it stats, awaiting authorization, which never changes for any. I'm wondering if i am overlooking something....any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! !

    Hi Sundeep24,
Sounds like you have not sorted a Jabber Server with what are called Transports.
iChat can use the Jabber side to only if the Jabber Server you are using has the required Transport and you have elected/registered to use it.
See the first three links here
    1) is how to set up the Jabber side that you probably don't need.
    2) is how to set up Transports. (AllForces link)
    3) is a List of Public servers and what transports and other features they offer.

  • Using MSN Mesenger through iChat AV

I know that you can use MSN Mesenger in iChat AV through a Jabber Application (Psi). But doing this, you can't have all your msn contacts in iChat. Or there is a way to do it????
Also, I'd like to know if there's a server direction that you can put in the iChat preferences (like talk.google.com when tou use Google Talk). Does anyone know it????

good day Felipe and welcome to the Apple Discussion Forum
<). But doing this, you can't have all your msn contacts in iChat. Or there is a way to do it????
You can have a seperate buddy list for your jabber account, but you can't get your jabber (MSN) buddy list into the same one that you use for AIM and .mac friends. i wish they would fix this or at least give us a tab on the buddy list so we can have more than one list open at a time.
on the upside, if you have iChat enabled in the apple extra menu, you can still track your MSN buddy list (in jabber) without keeping the buddy list open on the Desktop.
<Also, I'd like to know if there's a server direction that you can put in the iChat preferences (like talk.google.com when tou use Google Talk).
I am not sure ,but i know if you got to a chat room alot, you can save it as a url in safari that when you click on it in safari, it brings you to a chat room and iChat AV then works from there.

  • IChat 6.0 on lion and MSN messenger

With iChat 6.0 we all can use jabber , is there a way to add MSN messenger in ichat without use external plugin like transcript from other jabber account?

It should be noted that since iChat now supports IM plug-ins, there may be a third-party plu-gin of MSN's protocol in the future. But I doubt it will come from Apple.

  • MSN/hotmail and ichat videoconferencing

i'm new - forgive, i ahve read lots of the threads here and understand that i can set up msn messenger through the ichat, but this will still only allow me im exchange and not proper videoconferencing? have i understood correctly? is it true that the only way i can use videoconferencing with ichat is via aim or mac? and if so, when will ichat and msn be workable together for videoconferencing?

Welcome to the Apple forum, Billymac5.

through the ichat, but this will still only allow me
im exchange and not proper videoconferencing? have i
    understood correctly?
No, MSN does not work through iChat. However, there are ways to use "substitute" MSN clients (aMSN, I believe, is one) to chat with Windows MSN users. I don't think this allows video, however; I could be wrong.
is it true that the only way i
can use videoconferencing with ichat is via aim or
    mac?
iChat is only compatible with AIM 5.9 for Windows, or with Trillian (though the paid Pro version is necessary for video).
and if so, when will ichat and msn be workable
    together for videoconferencing?
That's a question for MS, rather than for Apple. :S It is my understanding that MS did not agree to make cross-platform videoconferencing possible, while AOL did. Sorry.

  • Webcam and MSN messenger

I have a MacBook Aluminium version with latest OS software.
When using webcam (icam) on MSN messenger through both aMSN and Mercury applications why is the invited contact only able to see a blank screen even though they have accepted my invitation and it is showing as connected.
I have a BT Home Hub 2 and connect through this wirelessly, my daughter can view my webcam when i invite her however she is sharing the same wireless connection through the BT Homehub.

    Welcome to Discussions, gordon bt
I am unfamiliar with "icam", but, until you get help from someone with more BT experience, you might consider the following.
If you have ever made successful connection with this contact, you need to check whatever changed since things worked properly.
I don't know how to fix BT problems, but, in the USA, the thing that usually sorts such trouble for me is to merely shut down everything, wait about a minute, and then restart my modem. When the modem's self-test is complete, I restart my router and let its self-test run to completion. Finally, I restart my Mac and try the connection again. Barring internet or ISP problems, things are working again.
If your contact has the same problem with others, too, the problem is likely at his end. He should test.
If with YOU only, as suggested at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9544011
the best help for aMSN and Mercury will be from the dedicated fora for those applications. Did you check? Have you tried everything they suggested?
Questions about BT service, connections, or setup should be directed to BT. However, you can use a test site like http://www.speedtest.net to verify whether you are getting the promised broadband performance.
I have also posted this info at your newest post on this same issue at

  • MSN messenger always has me update and then closes sporatically...help!

each time i login my msn messenger tells me that i need to update in order to use it. so i do, but then it closes sporatically (sp?) and won't let me instant message anyone.
    can anyone help?
    thanks,
    missy

    Hi Missy,
You've reached the AppleWorks forum, a space for discussion of issues and 'how tos' concerning the Apple productivity application AppleWorks, not a forum for the general topic of 'how Apple computers work.'
As your issue concerns MSN Messenger, a Microsoft product, you'll have a better chance of finding a solution in a forum (or 'newsgroup'—the term MS uses) for MSN Messenger at Microsoft's Mactopia site. The link will take you to the Messenger page at MS. There's are articles about Messenger and links to downloads. The Community link on the left will take you to the Newsgroups, one of which deals with Messenger:Mac. There's no newsgroup listed for MSN Messenger through.
As your issue may also include the interaction between Messenger and the Mac OS, you might try posting in the Apple Discussions forum for the version of the OS you are using, but I'd check out the MS newsgroups first.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • IChat + MSN Messenger Contacts + iSight = Video Conferencing

I have recently converted my windows-based laptop to a MacBook. Thus, I am very new to this new system. I need some assistance or guidance as I am unsure of how I can:
    1) use iChat or equivalent with video conferencing features (because MSN Messenger for Mac does not have important feature) to video conference with my contacts in MSN Messenger for Windows?
    2) still be able to chat with my contacts in MSN Messenger for Windows, without them installing iChat or equivalent?
    3) use the built-in iSight to video conference with them?
    4) configure iChat or equivalent to chat with my contacts if all of the above are possible?
    Much appreciated.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    1) If video conferencing is so important you could use skype or a jabber client that supports both video and audio. Your friends have to install skype or a jabber client too though.
    2) With a jabber account and iChat you can chat with your buddies on msn, yahoo, aim google-talk, ICQ etc. This is done through Jabber-gateways or transports. JabberLive! ( http://jabberlive.org ) has many gateways you can register with.
    3) Possible through skype or a jabber client that supports both video and audio.
    4) If you want to chat with your buddies using iChat you definitely have to get a jabber account. ( I can recommend http://jabberlive.org)

  • Ichat & msn messenger problems

Is there anyway that I can set my status to invisible on iChat?
Also- was not sure where to put this next question. On msn messenger for mac- when I try and change the emoticons, either add or remove some from my list, it states that I am only allowed a max of 59 emoticons. Would have no problem, except i have only selected about 15..........
Any idea how to change this?
thanks for any help in advance.
    Michelle.

    Hi Rocket monkey,
No for the Invisible in iChat (At present)
Not sure about MSN for Mac as I have not used it.
