MSWord 2004 crashes on print command

Hello! The moment I hit the print command for Word or to save a file as a PDF, MSWord crashes (as does Excel). I'm using Leopard OS 10.5 on an Intel 24" iMac. Can anyone offer some suggestions? - Thank you in advance - Richard

I stumbled on this thread while trying to resolve my own problems. My symptoms are identical to yours and I have just noticed this since installing a driver for a new HP Laserjet P1006. What a coincidence, must be HP's driver that is causing the crash. Any help or solutions to resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom

  • MS Word, Appleworks, crash on print command

I just bought an HP laserjet P1006 and downloaded the newest driver for it. Every time that I use the print command in MS Word 2004 and Appleworks, they crash. If I strictly use the print button it will print without a hitch. The problem seems erratic since occasionally it extends to programs that don't have a built in "printer" icon, (i.e.-safari, mail, etc) and they won't print at all. They don't crash like msword 2004, the print job just stops before it prints. When I open the print queue and try to resume the stopped operation, I get the message (operation could not be completed, client-error-not-possible ) This happens whether I'm printing directly through usb or networked to airport. Currently I can still print from mail and safari, but have a problem with Adobe, and of course MS word and Appleworks just crash. I reinstalled msoffice 2004 numerous times, deleted printers and re-added them, reinstalled print driver, to no avail.
One thing I tried out of curiosity was to create another user account and try printing from there. It work seamlessly from that account which is perplexing. I only tried it once, and it's possible that whatever is corrupted in my account, may also transfer to that account. I'm very confused and would appreciate any help in resolving this issue. I have include the crash log for troubleshooting convenience to those who understand them. =/
    Thanks, Tom

Thank you for your time in addressing this issues.
I looked into turning off rosetta and some other posts on that thread said you can't do that anymore.???? Something that is working for me so far is just creating another user and giving it admin privileges. Everything prints as it should. Not sure why this works, and I am still holding my breath. Its been working for about 3 days now and no glitches. Still have some files to transfer and hoping it won't bring the dream crashing down. =(
    Thanks, Tom

  • ITunes crashing after print command

Since the last software update I experience iTunes crashing when trying to print from the archive menu. The message I get is that the cause is probably the plugin hpaio_print2pde. I use a HP printer PSC1510. Are there more people with this problem? Does anybody know how to solve this? I would be very gratefull for a solution.

I have the same problem, e.g., get the message "application Pages quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by hpaio_print2pde plug in".
Would you please explain what you mean by "I deleted the file". Which file? Thanks.

  • Entourage 2004 can't print (command-P)

Noticed today that I can't get the print menu to show up in Entourage 2004 (I'm legacy Palm/Entourage sync user). I've tried restarting the computer...but I wonder if it has to do with the security update installed yesterday. Doesn't affect printing from other apps...and I still have as a crude workaround the "Print One Copy" option from the menu with default settings.
    Anyone have experience with this?

Security Update 2012-001 Bricks Rosetta programs
I've outlined the restore proceedure here, it covers a lot of bases and explains what is going to occur so please don't be intimidated it's a LOT easier that it appears.
Take your time and comprehend the steps involved and you'll be backup up like before in short order.
    Restore method.
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Try Restoring from a TimeMachine or hold option bootable clone
If you have TimeMachine drive, or a hold the option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from before the Security Update occured.
Obviously if you didn't make a recent backup before the update, your going to have to skip to Step #3.
Note: A TM restore can take a awfully long time, a clone restore takes under 2 hours in most cases.
If you don't know how to restore from TM drive
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
    #3 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
If no recent TM or bootable clone then:
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk and Permissions  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
Note: If Disk Uitlity can't repair the drive, then come back to seek further assistance and make sure you have a copy of your data off the machine.
#4 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#5 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Note: For most users likley Step #3 and #4 is likley all that is needed to be done.
    That's it really.

    Unverified hacks
Note: You may see a "hack" for this issue floating around, it has had mixed results as people's software is different.
You may want to try it, but it's at your own risk. It has worked fast for some and not at all for others, hopefully over time it will work for all.
The above methods I outline are Apple approved restore methods + based upon experience here and not a quick fix, but are sure to work as Apple recommends such steps themselves.
If at any time you feel this is beyond your capability, please seek local Mac/PC professional assistance before you lose your data.
In fact my steps above are very simple, you might want to have a family member or friend perfrom the proceedure in about a hour or two.
If you don't have any backup, please maintain at least a TM drive, just hook up a new blank external drive and TM will ask you to make a backup, takes some time so let it work.
If your a bit more skilled, a option bootable clone is much superior than TM drive.
    Good Luck

This is a known problem with the Lexmark drivers, and you can rename the plugin in the /Library/Printers/Lexmark/PDEs folder or check Lexmark's site for an update they released to address this problem.

Any idea hoe to fix this?
    Thank's

CS3 in Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks will crash when you print every time.
Adding or trying to make new print presets or printing will crash indesign CS3 instantly. It doesn’t like how the folders in
    /Library/Printers/ppds/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
is formatted. There are 5 folders in the Resources folder called en.lproj etc. (i.e. lots of different country folders).
Move any ppds you have installed to the Resources folder (ie, out of the en.proj folder) and delete all 5 folders. Delete the adpdF8.ppd (important). InDesign will now load print presets and they can be made manually and you will be able to print.
Be careful though, Acrobat Pro 8, when booted, will run a self heal routine. Because we have removed folders from the ppds folder in /Library, it tries to ‘repair’ this. Don’t repair as it will put the folders back into the ppds folder and indeign will crash again and you'll go round in a big circle. Instead, if you need to run Acrobat 8, we need to go into the acrobat app package and make its self heal routine see what we want it to see.
Go to your acrobat pro 8 app and show package contents. navigate to:
    Contents - MacoS - SelfHealFiles - adobepdFprinter - ppds - Contents - Resources
take the adpdF8.ppd out of the en.lpoj folder and put it loose in the Resources folder. delete the five folders en.lpoj etc. What we’re doing here is making these folders look the same as our /Library/printers/ppds/Contents/Resources/ path.
When you now boot acrobat pro 8, it will still do its check but what it is looking for will match what is already there. You can now use all your CS3 apps in Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks.

  • Java HotSpot Crashes while printing

    Hi,
I have been having this problem since a long time and I am unable to find a proper solution nor explanation to this behaviour. The JVM seems to crash whenever I try to print through my java application. The crashing is not predictable. Sometimes it crashes right after I submit the first printJob, sometimes after around 5 printJobs, and sometimes it doesn't crash at all. However, it is occuring very often and I would really appreciate some help on this subject.
I am using a Pentium IV 2.80GHz with 1 GB of Ram. I have WindowsXP with Service Pack 2 installed.
The printing is done through the Java Print API (java.awt.print). I have attached the log file generated when the JVM crashes. No exceptions are thrown.
    Thank you.

OK I am in the Java 2D group at sun and first lets say this is the wrong forum
to discuss this. Don't post here any more on this. Start a new thread
in Developer Forums -> Desktop -> Java2D and reference this thread (if you like).
Second, its by no means clear every one is seeing the same problem.
Crashes when printing might be due to fonts, if using them, but they might
also be printer driver issues or one of several bugs we've identified in the
printing implementation. Many of these are fixed in the latest JDK's (eg
1.5 update 10 [out soon]) and JDK 6 [also out soon]).
Use the latest JDK and the latest printer driver for testing.
Next font crashes can happen on any platform but the ones referenced
on Intellij IDEA are for Linux fonts called Aakar and Rekar.
Those are known JDK crashers (bad fonts) and its fixed in JDK 1.5 u10 and JDK6
6376296 : Aakar and Rekha fonts crash JDK.
One of those fonts also advertises "" as a name (what's up with that?) , so
Font font = new Font ("", Font.PLAIN, 12);would hit that. But assuming all of you are on windows these linux fonts are
not your problem. Other fonts may be but not these.
The fix for 6376296 is actually quite generic and might fix other font crashes
so its well worth upgrading. There's at least one font/printing fix there too.
Its out soon. Please try it. Once you have, if you still see problems, start
a new thread in the other forum.

  • All Apps Crashing On Print

Every application crashes on print. (Preview, TextEdit, MS Word, etc,...)
Test print and diagnostic print from print utility software works fine though.
I've "Reset Printing System..." and repaired permissions but all applications still crash.
Mac 10.4.11 printing on an HP 6110.
This began after I changed a printer cartridge on the printer. It was working, albeit with spotty printouts, I changed the cartridge and now all applications crash when I try to print. This even happens if I turn the printer off or disconnect it.
I could post the crash report if anyone thinks it would help.
Please help, my wife has a series of research papers due over the next week or so and this is our only computer!

I found the Hardware Test CD and ran the extended tests. Every thing passed.
I tried zapping PRAM but still crashes in Disk Utility and printing from all apps.
For what its worth here's the first few lines of the report from both the Disk Utility and the print from text edit:
    Disk Utility first:

  • Mail and Preview crashes when printing.  I have 10.8.3. error message something about est-e-filing plug in.  Help anyone??

I have the latest OS 10.8.3 and just recently Mail and Preview constantly crashes when printing.
It seems that it is missing a plug in or something.  Error messge is Mail quit unexpectedly when using the est-e-Filing-pdes plugin.
    Same message in Preview.
Actually I have experience more crashing (with Numbers) since last update.
    Can anyone help?
    Raoul

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Safari 7.1 crashes on print

Safari 7.1 crashes when executing a print command - error messages says pde plug in is the culprit.  How do I fix this?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • How to issue print command from report/form server to client printer on web

    1) We have a client server application which is to be deployed on the web environment. The reports generated in our application are having a destination type as File. These reports are printed after applying some print format (escape sequences) which are passed on to the printer programmatically at runtime while printing.
Now when this application is shifted on to the Application server (Forms server & Reports Server )in web environment ,the report outputs would be generated in the application server as against the client in client server environment as the report server is on the application server.
Now while printing/accessing the report the output file will not be available to the client unless it is pushed on to the client side from the server . I am able to see reports in pdf/html output but in this case layout of my reports gets changed and I dont want to change my layouts or reformat my report layouts.
How do I redirect the report output from the application server on to the client within the D2k context and then execute print commands?
Note: In this case we want to use both DMT and Laser printing. Also note that we use escape sequences to adjust reports in desired printing papers.
    2) We have second set of reports which we call as document because these are printed after capturing data from 'Form' using text_io utility (please note that for these documents we are not using any Report 6i functionality)and we print it from file using printing mechanism as mentioned above. These are working well in client server application. We adopted this methodology for getting better performance (in terms of speed as database server and network traffic is not involved) of printing. But now we are converting our application for web, we are finding it difficult how to capture Form's data from browser to client's machine and then executing printing commands which are stored in our application liabrary.
If you help me out by giving some suggestions, I shall be grateful to you.

    Hello
I wonder if you ever solved this problem.
I have a very similar problem with Photoshop CS5 on Mac OSX 10.6 + HP Photosmart C7180.
If I choose "Photoshop Manages Colors" the results are lousy.
If I choose "Printer Manages Colors" the results are OK. not necessarily great.
I believe I have all the correct settings after going through books and web advice (and wasted a lot of paper and ink).
As far as I can see, "ColorSync" is the internal Mac management which is the only option available with "Photoshop Manages Colors" and "Vendor Matching" appears to mean the printer vendor (ie HP) will provide the matching. Either can be selected if "Printer Manages Colors" is used. It seems the type of paper can be set in three different places. if That's all a bit academic as the results are poor regardless.
My wife suggests I buy a new printer - Epson's looking good.
Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
