Mt. Lion Version OS X 10.8 - Email Virus

I'm writing for my nephew who recently recieved an email virus which is causing havoc. I'm not sure if its a worm type virus? Other emails have been sent out without his knowledge.
His Laptop Details:
Mac Book Pro Model 15" Early 2001 - 2GHz - Intell Core i7
Version Mt. Lion Version OS X 10.8  (12A269)
Safari Version 6.0
The Mail client within Mt. Lion Version OS X 10.8 has been compromised. Sometimes he's unable to use alternative online email client to check mail status.
This is the first I've heard of a Mac virus.
Can anyone offer any help?
Thanx
Mike

This is the first I've heard of a Mac virus.
You still haven't
This is often assumed to be a virus when someone sees it.  The issue isn't that his Mac has been compromised, but rather his email account has either been hacked or it is being spoofed.  The emails are being sent "as" him, but not from his Mac.  If someone hacked his email, meaning someone got access to his email password, they could easily then send email as him from any computer.  Changing his email password can fix this.  If someone is spoofing his email address, there's unfortunately not much that can be done.  That basically means someone is pretending to be him and making it look as if the emails are originating from him when, in fact, they are not.
Sometimes he's unable to use alternative online email client to check mail status.
That would seem to confirm that it is not his machine that is the source of the problem.  It sounds like his web-based email is the culprit.

Some ISPs impose email attachment limits and that is quite often 10 mb, some have other maximums. Additionally, not all users have fast connections, so someone may not appreciate getting large attachments. It is usually recommended to upload videos you want to share to an online site to share them with others. In your case, your friend should check with her or his ISP to ask about maximums.
FWIW, you need to update your profile. If you are running Lion, you do not have a G5 - those were PPCs and discontinued in 2006 when Intel iMacs were introduced.

  • Burning my camera imported photos from iPhoto (Lion version) to CD??

I want to burn my photos that I transferred from my camera to iPhoto onto a CD. I want the photos on the CD to open up on a windows computer because my relatives have PCs. How do I burn them onto a CD so I can give the CD to my relatives and they can have copies of my photos? I'm new to iPhoto (Lion version) and don't know where my actual picture files are stored. All I see in the Finder is "Pictures" then the iPhoto icon and it opens up iPhoto. I don't want that. I want to see the ACTUAL picture files so I can transfer them to a Burn Folder and burn them to a disc. In previous iPhoto versions there used to be two folders in the iPhoto folder called "Originals" and "Modified" where all the imported photos were contained as actual files you could open (i.e. with Preview, etc) or burn onto CD. What happened to those folders in the new Lion version of iPhoto?
Any help would be great appreciated as I'm worried I won't be able to make CDs of my photos.
    I have a Lion OS X on a MacBook Pro 15".
    Thanks so much!

    1. Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and eport them to a folder on the Desktop. Burn that with the Finder. Result: a disk with the images that you can share with any OS.
    2. This has always been the way to do this.
    3. Upgrading to Lion has nothing to do with the changes to the iPhoto Library. Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to look inside: Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
As an FYI: There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
All of the above are a: faster and b: safer than crusing the Library folder.
    Regards
    TD

You need to pay for Snow Leopard and then Lion and your machine needs to meet certain reqirements
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Hacker uses my OS X Lion Version

    Hi,
I just realised that some other person is using my Mac OS X Lion Version. Or at least, I think he does.
When I open the Mac AppStore, it tells me next to the Installed OS X Lion, that there is an update available although I had updated my Mac just before. When I click on it, it tells me: "Es sind Updates für andere Accounts verfügbar - Melden Sie sich bei [email protected] an, um die Programme für diesen Account zu aktualisieren."
    In English:
"There are updates available for other accounts - Log on to [email protected] to update the programs for this account."
I have never heard about this Email address before, so I checked on Google and found out that this guy is some hacker dude from the UK. [email protected]
SO my question is now, what can I do and what should I do???
    Thank you for your answers!
I asked this question already at the Apple Mac Computer Support:

Try logging out of the App store and logging back in with YOUR Apple ID and password.
The only reason that I can think of for his App store account to show up on yout Mac is if he somehow hacked your computer. And that is very unlikely.

    Hi,
    thanks for that fast answer.
I'm not sure if its unlikely that sombody hacked my Mac. Two days ago, a friend of mine installed a Firefox Proxy-Plugin that I can watch YouTube videos, which are blogged in germany. Now I know that those plugins are a good entering site for hackers. So now I guess, somebody used that to enter my mac?
I deleted all that stuff now, changed my password, but this account still appears. Should I contact the apple support?

You should contact the Mac App Store support. Different from Apple Mac computer support.

Thanks for the answer, but thats definetly not true. I bought my MacBookPro 8,2 last summer with the OS X Lion version allready installed on it. Additionally, I have only 2 more free applications and one i have bought. I havn't installed any cracked or hacked apps in the MacApp Store.
Additionally, only next to the OS X Lion line, where usually the button "Installed" stands, is now a button with "Update". When I click on it, the message with the email adress appears. Besides the other apps, there is no such a update button. So I guess, that only my OS is affected! And this is 100 % my one purchase!!!
So, I can't deinstall any pirated app, because I don't have any!!
    Any other suggestions?
And what do you mean with: "but he is definitely an app pirate and now so are you."
    I haven't installed pirated apps!

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, when I reply to an email from the Global Inbox it incorrectly selects the reply to address.

Ok, since upgrading to Mountain Lion, when I reply to an email from the Global Inbox it incorrectly selects just my main business email account, even if the email was sent to a completely different persoanl address. This use to work without issue in Lion. I have at least a half dozen accounts that all come into the "Global Inbox" and I never worried about what account I was replying from as it always matched the account the email was originally sent to.
Now in Mountain Lion, this is broken and no matter what email I select it defaults to my main account and I have to remember to manually select the proper reply address from the drop down menu. So far the only way to avoid this is the keep all the separate account Inboxes showing and then selecting the account that I want to view. Then when I repy it is to the correct address, but having to do this makes the "Global Inbox" view completely worthless! If I have to select teh correct Inbox to get the proper reply address every time then what is the point of having a Global View?
Why did you break this Apple?

    Hello,
When you compose a message right click on the attachement and choose "View as Icon".
I know there was a Terminal command to set all attachements as icons by default but never tried it :
    - You can also use the Terminal (in your Applications folder > Utilities) quit Mail, and type in the Terminal :
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -boolean yes
    - To restore the original settings type :
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -boolean no
    (source)
    Hope this will help.

Is it possible to opt for the old version of ical over OS X Lion version ?

No, the Mac OS X released apps are part of the operating system and make system calls other versions may not have or may have changed.  Plus Lion allows iCloud access and sync of the calendar other Mac OS Xs do not make.

Try going to the web based site and see if you can set up a temporary folder there. Move anything you don't want to download to that folder.

  • Recommendations for running Windows on Macbook with OSX Lion version 10.7.2?

I Just bought a new MacBook Pro, running Lion, version 10.7.2. I am looking to run some windows applications on my mac, including AutoCAD, etc. I would ideally like to install bootcamp on my MacBook, but from what i understand, Lion is only compatible with Windows 7... I have Windows XP and VMWARE Fusion that I had run on my previous MacBook, however, I am unable to install VMWARE Fusion on my new MacBook (Lion). Any recommendations for running higher-profile windows apps on a mac without having to purchase Windows7 or a new version of VMWARE? Thanks

Newer computer = newer drivers and apps. You can only run Windows 7 using Boot Camp Assistant with the newer computers. Or, you can download and install Parallels or Fusion (the most current versions work in Lion). If using Parallels or Fusion you can install XP, Vista, Windows 7, etc.
Or, you could try the free VirtualBox.

  • I was using Mavericks Version for iPhoto 9.5.1 now i want to use the same library into my Mountain Lion version of iPhoto 9.4.3. how it;s possible?

i just re installed Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on my Mac. i was using Maverics 10.9.1 before now my question is my iPhoto library is unable to open on Mountain Lion version of iPhoto because i copy that library from Maverics version of iPhoto 9.5. now i am able to open iPhoto 9.5 library to iPhoto 9.4.1

After you download the upgrader, you will need to go to your Applications folder and find the Utilities folder.
In there will be the iPhoto Library Upgrader (version 1.1). Open the application and follow the instructions. Should get you going.

  • Mac OS X Lion Version 10.7

I Downloaded Mac OS X Lion on The Mac App Store today $29.99 i paid for, everything went well for me took me 30 Minutes to Install it, The Download Process when I was getting it on The Mac App Store was ok, it did not take long, maybe 20 - 25 minutes, everyone said it would take longer? this thing is very Fast on My End of the computer, i did have a few problems in the beginning but when all the updates came in, everything was ok, Mac OS X Lion is worth getting you all will love it, My Video Webcam Quality got better.
should I still Repair My Permissions even though everything is working fine?

from Colin Robinson, PS If you go to Your Stuff at the top of the Page and then click on Profile you will be able to edit 'My Products' to change this bit:
so that it says 10.7 instead of 10.6.8 - that way when we try to help you we will see that you are on Lion and not Snow Leopard.
I Updated it already it says Mac OS X Lion Version 10.7

  • OS X Lion Version 10.7.5 and after new hard drive I have lost iPhoto, iMovie, etc.

I have the OS X Lion version 10.7.5 and after a new hard drive I have lost iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band etc. I have tried the re-install of the OS X Lion and checking the app store under 'purchases' but none of these options were successful.
When I click on iPhoto in the App Store, it says that it cannot update because version 10.9 is required (I tried to transfer iPhoto from my brothers computer but he has a newer laptop which means I cant open it whcih is why it says 'update' but have deleted it now). When I go to iMovie on the App Store, it says I need to pay but the only reason I dont want to do that is that it origionally came on the computer and after paying Apple to install a new hard drive I dont want to have to pay for all the apps that origionally come on it.
    Can someone please help

Then you will need the Original System Reinstall DVD discs that came with the system to reinstall the iLife suite of apps then you can update them from the Mac app store or through Software Update.
Those discs came in the box the computer came in. Hopefully you still have the box and those discs.

Can I upgrade to an OS X Server version?
Is any OS X Lion version compatible?

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, the computer's also incompatible with Mountain Lion and Mavericks; if desired, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

I don't think Lion installed it, rather you did. That said System Preferences>Print & Scan. select your Epson printer and then select Options & Supplies>Driver>Print Using>Select print Software. Then scroll down to the driver you want to use.
