MTC/SMPTE Sync

Using AA3 with Windows Vista on HP Pavillion Notebook. I've optimized Windows for better DAW performance. Using Presonus Firewire products
as recording interface and tons of external recording and keyboard gear.
In multitrack mode, I set up AA3 to MIDI trigger enable, sample accurate sync and select it to be the master device. I have no problems triggering external devices on playback- very reliable, but when I arm a track for recording AA3 wont trigger the external devices anymore.
I've exhausted my search for an answer. Anybody know a way I can set up and record with AA3 as the MTC/SMPTE master? Is this a bug or am I trying to do something that just can't be done.

Thank you for the suggestion. A very simple and effective idea offered up. Earlier versions of AA are not "fully" compatible with Vista.
I will point out that I am losing valuable components related to VST plugins not compatible with the "host" that are nice to have when tracking.
I am also losing certain Windows control features like accessing the recording mixer and ASIO control panel. The later being hightly important. Then there is the question of session data whether or not it is compatible with earlier versions.
But, all things considered, AA 1.5 does in fact record while acting as the master MTC sync device. Tracking audio with AA1.5 and then mastering in AA3.0 is probably the best I can hope for under the Vista platform.
Next time there's an upgrade, I'll take the time to download and use the trial version and not automatically assume that functionality from earlier versions is a given.

  • Syncing External Audio with SMPTE

My 8 track field recorder has a SMPTE sync source. I am going to connected it to the DP's RED camera sync input so my audio and his video have SMPTE sync between the two.
In the past I have used audio waveforms and manually sync'ed everything and although it works very well it is a tedious and time consuming process. It often took me half a day to sync up 8 tracks of audio with the edited video for one two minute scene in STP.
How then, do I match up the audio and video using the sync signal automatically or semi automatically?

In FCP, when you merge clips, one of the sync options is to use Timecode ... but I'm wondering if you shouldn't instead be looking at a helper app called PluralEyes:

  • Strange issue with MTC

When I lock Logic to my Protools session via midi beat clock everything seems to work fine. But when I switch to locking by way of MTC, Logic seems to lock, I get the blue bar across the top of the arrange window, and the numbers in the transport start going, but no audio comes out of Logic and the SPL doesn't shuttle with the playback. Even in the syncronization window Logic shows to be receiving MTC, but nothing plays. BTW, I am only playing back midi tracks that are streaming audio from VIs.
The playback in MTC should look just like midi beat clock only with a tighter lock, right?

Thanks for checking on that no au audio problem.
Success, I loaded Logic with a project that uses both audio and AUi tracks.
On the PC I ran CubaseSX3 sending MTC over standard MIDI cable to Logic. After getting the sync setting right Logic locked instantly to MTC.
In Logic, click and hold the synchronization button on the transport.
    Select: "SMPTE Sync (MTC)
    And: "Auto Sync In"
Click hold again and select Synchronization.
    Under the tab "General"
    "Auto Enable External Sync"
    "Auto Detect Format of MTC"
Should be checked as per the previous operation.
    "Validate MTC = Always
    Bar Position 1 1 1 1 Plays at SMPTE 0:0:0:0.0
If SMPTE is not set at the above you will have problems,
    type it in if necessary.
When you say that MTC is time dependant, does that mean
that it won't matter what the tempos are in Protools?
That is correct, MTC is the MIDI version of SMPTE.
Your format is time based not tempo/bar/beat based.
Anyway, got it working here and it seems quite solid.

  • Time code

    Hello all,
Is there a way to get linear TC or SMPTE into logic, as in thru an audio track, so that it will use that in it's BWAV timestamp, without using a MTC syncronizer?
The Motu 828MKII has a TC in, and DP will sync to LTC or SMPTE, but can't find a way to tell Logic to use LTC...
    Thanks,
    TTH,
    NY, NY.

Is there a way to get linear TC or SMPTE into logic, as in thru an audio track, so that it will use that in it's BWAV timestamp, without using a MTC syncronizer?
    no.
you need to use a MTP (midi timepiece) to convert LTC to MTC to sync with logic. DP will be the same, it will require an MTC signal converted from an anologue source by a midi time piece.
this is very old school, is there any particular reason you want to use LTC?
actually unless i am very much mistaken you might be able to use the motu 828 as an MTC converter. what midi options does it have? it might have routing to allow an input to be used to convert LTC to MTC via its midi port.

  • Arpeggios - why don't they playback from 1st beat of 1st bar ?!

Using an AU plugin synth in Logic 8 (say FM8 or Gladiator) with an arpeggio preset - why when i record into the 1st 4 bars of a song by holding a single note down and then quanitise it so it should start playing on EXACTLY beat 1 of bar 1 - do i hear NOTHING until the 4 bar region loops round to the beginning!!?
(i'm talking about arpeggio patches where holding a single note plays the arpeggio - so what i end up recording is just 4 bars of a sustained note)
This is so bizarre and aggravating - i always have to nudge arpeggios slightly to the right to hear them from the start of a song - please someone, is there a way of fixing this!??

    thx for replying.....

in the pro studios 1.1.1.1 is never used..
Professionals requires a lot of SMPTE sync... for movies or for make MTV Music video of your song... or for Jingles...

    have never see the number 5.... 4.... 3.... 2.... 1.... before starting a jingle???
usually the correct workflow is to start at 5.1.1.1... or later...
do you know somthing about SMPTE sincronization?
It's too annoying having to manually place the cursor at a point where it will actually play the arpeggio back! (also in cycle mode this is impossible - so even more hassle!)
I'm sorry but i think that it is not so annoyning...
in any case you can use Garage Band or other not Professional software.

  • MOTU Ultralite's Audio Desk

I see that the MOTU Ultralite comes with a software called Audio Desk. Is there any advantage to using Audio Desk in addition to Logic?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

ALTHOUGH, it's actually worth hanging on to! Its not as bad as it looks at all, its basically the audio side only of Digital Performer circa V4 with a few missing features. Plus it will also work with the incuded SMPTE syncing system most if not all motu units have whereby a jack lead contain a SMPTE signal can be plugged straight in rather than going through midi conversion first.
Unfortunately logic can't do this so if you're ever likely to do that keep hold of it. Plus it's free, so just keep a hold of it anyway.

  • Syncing Logic and multitrack tape using smpte/mtc

    Hi,
Has anyone managed to sync Logic to multitrack tape using smpte/mtc without major drift ? If you've tried this, let me know your experience.
    Many thanks.

Never had a problem with wow and flutter - but I guess it depends on how good the tape machine is. I use a Studer A827, so it's not been an issue for me. I just use striped tape, usually at 15 ips, to record the basic tracks, and transfer a reference mix to PT and/or Logic, and transfer those files to Logic and carry on with overdubs, and only use the 24 track tapes again when it's time to mix. I'm not doing anything complex like sound to picture, or chasing the tape in the rest of the recording, so there may be issues lurking which I don't encounter.

  • Can't keep dialog track in sync when changing smpte start for bar 1.

I can't keep dialog track in sync when changing smpte start for bar 1. I have picture and dialog in sync starting at 00:59:58:00. My smpte counter matches the visual timecode in the picture. When I set  bar one to start at a particular TC number the dialog track moves with the bars. I want it to stay put, in sync with pic. I have locked the smpte position for the region but it still moves. please help!

This might be a long-shot, but check your Tempo window and see if any of the tempo events starts in the negative bar range.
Also, while you're at it, check your markers page as well.
Worst case scenario, you can insert measures in order to push all of your tracks so that they start at bar 1 again, but this is very important: if you do this, make sure that your tempo events (and markers, while you're at it) are also selected before you insert the measures. You can check this by simply opening the tempo and marker windows, and, if those events aren't selected, use CMD-A (standard command) to select them all. Then do your insert.
    Lemme know how it goes...

That's correct and normal behavior... I'm 99% you can not use loops on a machine that's slaving to MTC. The reason.... MTC is TIME based (MIDI Time Code) not measure/loop/pattern based. The slave machine will follow the time code and disregard the loop.
This is not something I've tried but it seems "right" to me. Logic needs to run from internal sync to loop.

Nobody's ever come up with an easy way, or come to that, any way to do this. Audition isn't intended to be music composition software, as such - it's been tailored rather more towards radio and TV post-production, and the recording of live music, especially in its latest incarnation (CS5.5 & 6).
It has been suggested (quite reasonably) that a way around this might be for Audition to support Rewire again, but that's entirely up to the devs. The problem there is that there is also a long list of stuff that relates more to the current product focus to develop, and I think that this may get priority. We'll just have to wait and see.

  • Sync Issues - MPC 1000, MPC 60, Fire Wire 410

Hello, I recently purchased Logic Pro 7. I'm having issues syncing Logic to my MPC's. I used to use Nuendo 3, but have since moved on. On Nuendo I would sync via Midi Clock. I would like to use Logic where I can press play/record in Logic and the MPC Plays. I'm not sure if in Logic I would need to use Midi Clock or Midi Time Code. I have my Firewire 410 set up in Logic but the Midi Ports don't seem to show up in the Transport bar. It says NO IN, and NO OUT. I'm sure I'm missing something that is very easily fixed. All I would like to no is what are the proper settings to contect the MPC to Logic. Also I can't seem to find a place in Logic where I can set my midi input 1 and my midi output 1. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Found this on the net some time ago.... hope it helps:
This is how to set up so the MPC as the master, keeping it's timing and groove.

Be sure to monitor the mpc audio with direct monitoring (available on most I/O devices), v. important, if you don't, you'll have alot more hassle with latency, meaning you'd have to go and fiddle with MTC delay settings in Preferences/Midi/Sync (which is actually quite easy.

    Logic Settings:

In - File / Song Settings / Synchronisation / Midi

Make sure Midi Clock is not set to transmit (uncheck box if needed)
Make sure Transmit MTC is unchecked
Make sure Transmit MMC is checked
Make sure Listen to MMC input is unchecked

In - File / Song Settings / Synchronisation / General

Sync Mode = "MTC" (also check the Auto Enable MTC box)
Set frame rate to "25 FPS"
Set Validate MTC to "always"
set 'Bar Position' to "1 1 1 1",
set 'Plays at SMPTE' to "0 : 0 : 0 : 0" (VERY important)

ALL the above settings are song settings so you would have to save the Logic song as a template if you want these settings to be in effect every time you start a new song, otherwise would have to be done manually every time.

    MPC settings:

    In sync page (MODE+9 - F2)

    Sync In = Slave
Mode:OFF
Recieve MMC: ON (This means Logic transport .. play, stop etc. will trigger the MPC)

Sync Out = Master
Mode: MIDI TIME CODE
Frame Rate: 25
Send MMC: OFF"

  • Sync problems with Logic ????

I use adat hd24's with my logic setup with a BRC and motu midi express. I'm running smpte to my midi express from the BRC and Logic reads time code from the midi express.. I have music tracks in Logic and I'm recording vocals on the BRC. Should I run MTC or SMPTE to the midi express for logic to sync correctly. I've been having problems with the smpte. It seems logic will go out of sync. This doesn't happen over a short time period. I can run the song thru from start to finish 7 or 8 times but at some point Logic just doesn't want to sync anymore. Sometimes when I start back at the beginning of the song the sync will be fine but if I stop and start anywhere after the beginning the sync will be off. Go figure!!! What's the best and safest way to sync Logic with my setup of HD24,BRC and midi express with L7. The BRC generates MTC and SMPTE.

you need a word clock connection between the brc and the computer/logic. do you have that?

  • Trouble syncing logic pro 9 to my vs2480

Hi I am trying to sync Logic Pro 9 to my Roland VS2480 using MTC so I can control the transport section using the buttons on my VSA2480, When I press play on my VS2480 the play button on logic lights up ok but logic seems to be stuck in a in a small loop starting at -8.1.1.1. with only the last 1 digit moveing  it gets to around -8.1.1.48 then reverts to -8.1.1.1. .If i then reset logic to bar 1 and press play again on my VS2480  Logic  jumps back to position -8.1.1.1. and gets stuck in this loop again ,I have tried every thing I can think of to get round this but nothing seems to fix this ,I can get Cubase to sync ok wit MTC  and Reason with midi clock  Reason ,so I know my midi cables are fine.I have also tried using MMC but to no avail.Has anyone else had a simular problem and I can not find an email address to ask Logic Pro support .
Maybe the answer is simple and I am not seeing it ,but any help would be welcome
    Thanks Kevin

    Hi,
it seems that the VS2480 is starting at a different SMPTE/MTC time than Logic Pro.
It should work if you would adjust the SMPTE/MTC offset for Logic Pro accordingly.
Another solution (because Logic acts better as a SMPTE/MTC master than a slave):
Sync the VS as a slave to MTC (Logic MTC mster) and engage MMC for VS to be able to
control Logic's transport controls via VS control buttons.
    Best,

  • Updating playhead in Pro Tools (slave) from Logic (master) using MTC.

    Hey there,
I have setup MIDI over LAN using the Audio MIDI Setup between two Macs and it works so far as when I hit play in Logic the Film in my Pro Tools picture machine seems to be in sync with the music coming from Logic. Questions:
    1) When nudging the playhead in Logic left and right the corresponding timecode changes are not updated on the Pro Tools machine until you hit play again in Logic. Is there any way Pro Tools can update it's play head, timecode values and picture as I nudge the Logic playhead without pressing play again? It would be great to nudge the Logic session by one frame and see the update in Pro Tools accordingly.
    2) When I hit play to stop the music in Logic the time code readings are not the same in each DAW how can this be remedied so that they are? Is something going wrong here? e.g. stopped @ 01:00:03:04 in Logic and Pro Tools reads 01:00:03:09.
Using Pro Tools 9.05, Logic Studio 9.1.8 (64-bit).
    Thank you!
    Ben

Ok after more testing I have managed to get this working using a direct midi connection between the 003 and the laptop (using a Edirol UM1 and the 003). Here is what I did.
ProTools8LE as master running on MacPro:
    1. Setup->Session
1a. Set the session start time to 00:00:00:00
    1b. Time code rate =25
    2. Setup->Peripherals
2a. Synchronization - MTC reader Port: Digi 003, Port 1
MTC Generator Port: Digi 003, Port 1
    3. Set session tempo (eg: 120bpm)
    4. Transport- hit the arrow on the right hand side of the transport window and select "Synchronization" then hit the GEN MTC button
    LOGIC slave running on Laptop.
    1. Connect MIDI i/o interface to ports on 003
    2. Set session tempo to match that in PT (120bpm)
    3. Settings->Synchronization
    Sync mode = MTC
Auto Enable External Sync = yes
Frame Rate = 25 (same as protools)
Auto detect format of MTC = yes
Bar position 1111 plays at SMPTE 00:00:00:00 (this matches the setting in PT)
Thats it. This setup appears to be working on my rig. I still haven't got this to work over Network midi, and I still haven't got PT8LE and Logic 8 to work together on the same machine. Let me know how you go.

  • SEND MTC from LOGIC to MOTU TRAVELER

    Hi!
In DP I can successfully 'generate form sequencer' SMPTE (in the MOTU SMPTE Console) - it follows the song position and sends the SMPTE time to the MOTU Traveler which I can then route via an analog out to external devices to sync with DP. I am able to sync up a Pro Tools session in another computer. Can't figure out how to get Logic to do this.
Nor can I figure out how to get LOGIC to read MTC sent to the IAC Driver from DP. Shouldn't LOGIC be able to chase another software application?
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    Craig

It really depends on the FX you're using.
    Here are two simple examples:
    1) Let's suppose you want to insert an external hardware compressor on Audio 1.
Insert I/O plug on Audio 1, with its output set to Bus 1 (instead of 1-2)
In the I/O plug, set the ins and outs to 3
Connect the output of your compressor to your interface, input 3 and the compressors input to output 3 on your interface.
    In Logic, create Audio 2
In Audio 2, choose Bus 1 at its input, 1-2 as it's output.
Record your compressed track on Audio 2
Because you're creating a roundtrip through your interface, you'll create some delay. So when you're done, adjust the start of your new region on audio 2 to match that of audio 1. Be careful not to create a feedback loop while you're hooking all this up.
    2) Let's suppose you want to use an external reverb unit. In this case, you probably want to use it on an Aux, and not record it, but have it available to send to from any track.
Let's use Bus 20 to send to your reverb unit.
Create an stereo bus return. Let's say Aux 20.
On AUX 20, choose Bus 20 as it's input, output 1-2
Insert I/O plug on AUX 20, and in that select Input and output to 3-4
Patch your reverb's input L&R to your interfaces 3-4 outputs.
Patch the reverb's outputs L&R to your interfaces 3-4 inputs
Now just send from your audio track(s) to your reverb on Bus 20, just like it's a plug-in reverb.
In this case, although you're also inducing latency, you can compensate for it in your reverb's predelay settings, as you're probably using some anyway, so just reduce it by the round-trip delay.
It's actually much easier to do than to type it out And there are alternative methods too, but hopefully this will help.
