MTS file-unreadable

I cannot open the following file on mac mini. It only offers me IPhoto which says "file unreadable" and iTunes which doesn't do anything. I have received it via We Transfer.  I dropped into iMovie but get the same "unreadable"message. Any thoughts?

MTS is the acronym for MPEG Transport Stream, it is the video format used by most of the file based video cameras.
You will need to convert this file to a format that Quicktime player can use. Download and install Handbrake
its free. Open the file in handbrake and convert to H264.

  • Is editing HD (.mts files) on a laptop possible?

    Hi folks,
I have recently purchased a CANON Vixia HF20 camcorder with an internal harddrive that outputs ".mts" files.
    I own a DELL Inspiron 1525.
    My processor is an: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T3400 @2.16GHz  2.17GHz
    Memory (RAM):  3.00Gb
    System type:  32-bit operating system
    Windows Vista Home Premium
I've used Adobe Premiere Pro in the past (non-HD files not on this computer) and enjoy it thouroughly.
I was hoping to use it again, but the specifications seem to suggest my processor speed is too slow.
    I'm looking for some advice:
    1)  Will CS4 operate on this computer?  And if so, would I be able to edit the .mts files?
    2)  Is there anything I can do to this laptop (upgrades/hardware purchases) that I can do that would enable me to edit these files?
    3)  If this isn't going to work, do you know of other editing software that I could use to edit .mts files on this computer?  (I'm reluctant to purchase a desktop after recently buying this computer).
Your insights would be most appreciated.  My thanks in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Kyle

    Hi Bill,
Thanks so much for your great suggestions.  I am a bit confused about your hard drive suggestion:  Is "A 3x I/O w/ SATA connections and 7200 RPM speed" an internal or external drive?  I bought the laptop with an eSATA external drive connection.  If I hook up an external 7200 rpm eSATA hdd, could I expect better performance?  Should I copy the avchd files to it for editing?  Where would you write the preview and other temp files, and does it matter?  do I have control over that?  Other page and virtual memory assignments?
Finally, if I pre-process the AVCHD files through Adobe Media Encoder and convert them to some other HD format first, will I have better luck editing?  Which formats -- of those  available in Premiere/Encoder -- would you recommend?  I know transcoding is an extra step, but that might be the price of remote editing with the laptop.
    Thanks again,
    Lance

  • I am using MTS files.  They load in PE fine. The problem is when I try to play them, I just get audio and no video.  I have installed the latest updates.  Is there a CODEX that I need.

I have windows 8.1.  I have downloaded the mts files from my video camera onto my hard drive.  I have loaded a subset of these mts files into premier elements and they show up fine.  I can bring them to the time line without a problem.  The issue is that when I click on them, I only get the audio and no video.  Normally when you click a thumbnail, the picture shows in the large screen.  That screen remains blank.

John - thanks for your response
    1. Graphics Adapter:  Nvidia GeForce GTX 650
    2. My driver before you response was 3/4/14   9.18.13.3523.  I went to Nvidia and downloaded and installed latest driver 7/2/14  9.18.13.4052
    3. Rebooted and checked APE and no change in the problem. Still doesn't show video when I double click an thumbnail or if I single click it does not show a video image in the large screen.
    4. Some things I have done to try to resolve the problem.
         a. Searched this forum for a similar problem.  I didn't see one.
         b. Did a web search to see if I could find a solution outside this forum
c Went into "edit" and tried some changes in project preferences and setting to see if that would make a difference
         d. Tried to contact Adobe support to speak to a person but that seemed difficult and could never figure out how to do it.
    5. I have always loaded AVI clips into this program and this is the first time I have tried MTS files. When I opened the new project, the program notified that I had to change something??? to load an MTS file and asked me if I wanted the program to do this for me.  I said yes and here I am.   I seem so close to making it work.   Thanks

When i try to upload a .mts file from my Sony camera to Premiere Pro CC it refuses to play the audio! Ofcourse i could convert every single clip but it takes tons of time. How can i make Pr play audio track properly?

Does it not play at all or cannot you get the audio in the timeline?
Did you copy the entire card to the hdd and then imported the file via the Media Browser?
Did you source patch the audio tracks?

  • How can I convert an .mts file to mp3?

I would like to export just an audio clip (2 minutes) to an mp3 file. I have deleted the video in the timeline but it still leaves a 91Mb file - far too big of course to usefully use. I have found the Zamzar site who will convert but of course the file is still too unwieldy. Is there a way please?
I am using Prem El 9.
    Most grateful.

    Hi MissMoppett,
    Thanks for posting Adobe forums.
You can also try to use a 3rd party software Format factory to convert .mts file .mp3.

  • I have MTS files imported from a Canon HD cam. They import into I movie and I see them in the Finder folders and they preview fine. I have a new project and some of the clips are freezing and some audio is now gone? Do i need a file converter and convert

I have MTS video files that import from a Canon Vixia HF S20 HD camera. I imported into I Movie. They converted into MOV files and I see them in the movies folder in finder. They view fine and run through the events folder in Finder. In I Movie, I created a new project and used a "Theme". The project worked fine at first but then some clips started to freeze and some lost audio. The effected clips are the same in the project library and in the event library, meaning they are froze in both places. As I said when i view through finder the MOV files preview and work fine.  Is this inherent to MTS files using in I movie. SHould i consider using a file converter to convert to MOV files prior to importing into I movie.
I found on Apple support site info that states the MTS files can only be imported through the camera. I am developing my back up procedures and now I am faced with backing up in the original MTS files but not being able to reload if necessary into I movie. Any suggestions?

I'd like to add that after I import these clips without thumbnails, iMovie does give me an error and say that they could not be imported. No explanation as to why, though. Again, they play fine on my camera.

  • How can i open .mts files in premiere cs4?

    Hi all,
    I am using premiere cs4.
when i import .mts file in cs4 it says file format is not supported.
could any one please tell me how can i open .mts file in premiere cs4.
    Thanks
    Murali.

What kind of audio did the camera record?  For example, the Sony NX5U can be set to record linear PCM audio, which will not import into CS4.  If the same camera is set to record AC3 audio, then the clips should import and play as expected.  This thread may help:

  • .MTS File Metadata Workflow?

I have a client who needs to be able to search through a huge number of video clips via keywords in metadata but i've hit a huge wall when it comes to .mts files.
I am unable to write any metadata to these files, i'm seeing various reasons as to why this is the case, but no solution.
Spoke to three people at Adobe chat support this morning and no-one can help.
Is there any workflow in the Adobe Suite that allows metadata/keywords to be added to .mts files that can then be searched in Bridge or Lightroom for instance?
I have a keyword hierarchy produced that was intended to be used for tagging in Lightroom, I cannot assign the keywords to the original files but is it possible to create a Catalog that can then be handed over to the client with a copy of the video files so that they are searchable within the Lightroom software?
I have been trying to achieve anything similar in Prelude but still no success.
Am I the only one having this problem?

If you want to rewrap MTS files on Windows, without transcoding (like with Clipwrap), you can do that with FFMBC (for example). Yes, you can than reconect original files to rewrapped H264 MP4 and new Resolve will be able to read your timeline. However performance will be far from good.
Actually there is no perfect workflow for Premiere > Resolve roundtripping for MTS files at this moment:
    - You can transcode everything to DNxHD or Prores before editing, but that's waste of time and disk space
    - With combination of AE scripts you can transcode only material used in edit, but again that's waste of time, and you'll have to rebuild your timeline manualy
One option in Premiere Project Manager would solve all issues with roundtripping and that's "Create new trimmed project and TRANSCODE media with handles". That way you would be able to edit native, and transcode only media used in timeline.
At this moment your best option is to transcode everything before edit. On Windows use DNxHD, pick bitrate according to your source footage, and everything will be fine.

  • CS4 can no longer see mts files

I can't be sure,  but it seems that after an update today that started when I opened Premiere Pro CS4,  my projects can no longer see any of the mts files ,  even in the media browser.   It can see other types of files,  just not mts.  This IS a full version (NOT trial)  of Premiere.  All was working for  the past week and a half since I first installed the Production Suite CS4.  Now I get the red "Media Offline"  screen on the source and program monitors.  Media Browser cannot see any of the mts files.  What has happened?  How can this be fixed.  The Adobe updater downloaded 9 updates when I opened Premiere,  but the download seemed to hang.  I chose to let it resume the update later when I hit cancel.  When I rebooted and brought up Premiere,  it finished the download and ran the install of the updates.  Seems as though the update may have messed up my FULL VERSION status somehow.  The important thing is that I can no longer see any mts files,  and the rendered file also produces the red media offline screen.

Check your iPod's hard drive for errors. Open My Computer, right-click the drive, Click Properties, Tools, Check Now..., Select Options, Start.
Some of your missing files/folders may be restored although their names may be lost. 4gb is the max. file size on FAT32 so are we talking a 42gb folder rather than a single file?

  • .mts files no longer working after erase and re-install.

I've been having a ton of crashes with Premiere CC. Now, after an erase and install I can't get .mts files to import natively. I get an error "file not supported" which has never happened before.

  • What are the best settings to convert .mts files to Prores

    Hi friends,
Trying to figure out some settings. I am a novice editor so please forgive lame terminology in advance:
I have footage shot on a Canon Vixia HF M500. I am editing in Premiere Pro CC on a MAC with OS 10 Mavericks. I tried editing directly from the .mts files, but it doesn't scroll through footage well unless I render. Also if I add any effects like a fade in, etc it wants me to render the entire clip. I think my best workflow will be to convert the files to Prores prior to editing. I generally output all of my masters as Prores anyway so it seems like the logical choice.
What I can't figure out is which settings to use. I'm converting using Adobe Prelude CC (which then uses Adobe Media Encoder CC). I installed a group of Prores presets and my four main choices are:
    1080i, 29.97
    1080p, 29.97
    1080i, 23.97
    1080p, 23.97
The camera itself has three settings 30p, 24p, and 60i. The 24p and 60i are both interlaced (even though 24p shouldn't be) so I use 30p. I'm pretty sure the correct setting for me to transcode to is 1980p, 29.97 but not sure how to determine that. When I look at the .mts files in Premiere it tells me they are 29.97. Do I have to match that when I transcode? Not sure how to know whether they are 1080i or 1080p. I'm hoping it's 1080p because working with interlaced footage is a major drag. Also, does it even matter? If it's transcoding anyway, can I just pick whatever setting I want and that becomes the new normal.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the response Johnathan. I noitced that videos converted using the iPad preset did look ok on the mini, I was just curious if having more bespoke settings would create videos that would maximise the smaller screen real estate???

  • AVCHD: how to deal with the .MTS files in FCP 5 or iMovie 08

I just bought a Canon HF10 AVCHD camcorder and stumbles into the difficult editing process with FCP 5. Here are my steps:
    - Conversion of the camcorder .MTS files with iMovie 8; they are then transformed into a .MOV sequence. A 14secondes sequence recorded in the highest quality (FXP, 17Mbps) is captured as a 28MB .MTS file by the camcorder, rendered as a 231MB .MOV file by iMovie 8, and it took 53 sec to process it !
    - I export the sequence as: Share >Export Final Cut XML…
    - In FCP 5: import XML…then I tried different modes: AIC 1080i60 (image is overstreched), AIC 720p30 (proportion is OK, but I captured in 1080…), AIC DV NTSC 48kHz (not HD…) BUT none of the resulting sequence is rendered, I still have the red bar above the timeline.
For financial reason, I’d like to avoid to go to FCP 6, which seems to work natively with the AVCHD format.
    My questions are:
    - is there a way to reduce the size of the iMovie converted files: 900MB per minute ?
    - is there a way not to have to render the imported files in FCP ?
    Can anyone help me ?

I have the same camera and the reality is you're going to go through that translation from AVCHD to some sort of Quicktime file format no matter which tool you use. I do it with FCP6 and it needs to do the same translation from the .mts files to (they recommend) ProRes files. AVCHD is a highly compressed format and when you move it to an editable form, the file(s) is going to get much larger. It is HiDef content after all which can be quite large.
In my case, once I do the transfer to ProRes format nothing needs to be rendered in the FCP timeline unless I add some sort of filter or effect to it.
The rendering problem you are describing is often caused by the Sequence setting not matching the content settings. This is automated in FCP6 where it detects the content format of the video you're trying to add and changes the sequence settings to match the content. Take a look at the sequence settings and see if they match the structure of the content and that should resolve the 'everything needs to be rendered' situation.

  • What is the best format to choose when converting mts files to fit well with iMovie? I am using iCoolsoft for conversions and can pick from almost any kind of formats to convert to. I don't want to get the black frames... what do you advice me to pick?

I have lots of MTS files stored on an external hard drive that I want to use in my iMovie films. Now, as you know, iMovie doesn't like them. I have bought iCoolsoft for converting my video files into any format I want but now I've got another problem: what format is the best for iMove? Some of the formats I've tried are giving me a black frame around the video clips and some are bigger and other smaller but anyway I don't want them at all! Can anyone recommend what format to convert to to keep the original clip's size and no frames and still be liked by iMovie to be able to import them?
Much thankful for any kind of support and reply on this one.
    Eva

The format iMovie uses when you edit video after it's imported is Apple Intermediate Codec, it will have the file ending .mov but internally it's set so the Mac can edit individual frames easier and play them back easier at full speed. If you have the option of saving to QuickTime .mov see if there is a pulldown list of all the different "codecs", that's the style or flavor of compression applied to the video frames. If Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) appears on that pull-down list choose that as your codec when you save to .mov.

  • What is the best product for converting MTS files (NOT on camera or in root directory) for editing in Final Cut

    Hello all,
I have read the forums and know that I cannot use the Log and Transfer function on Final Cut Express 4.0 for my AVCHD files (from my Panasonic HC-V700) AFTER I have transfered the files out of the original root directory.  Unfortunately, I did not know this until recently and I have a bunch of old footage in .mts form that I copied onto my harddrive WITHOUT the root directory.  I now must get it into Final Cut Express 4.0.1. and I would like to use a Log and Transfer style program so that I can select what I need and erase the rest.  I know about the program VoltaicHD which can be used for this purpose.  I have not yet purchased it, but I will if this is my best option.  The downsides to it are that it takes a lot of time to process the files (i hear from this forum) and that it creates extremely large files (hearsay from this forum, though I would like to know just how big those files are and how they compare to the size of files final cut creates). When I tried the trial version, I also noticed that unlike the log and transfer function in Final Cut Express 4.0.1, you cannot capture multiple subclips from a single clip.  Well you can, but you have to load the clip into the viewing window again, which is not ideal.
I would love some more advice on this.  I imagine other people have made this same mistake and have had to figure their way out of it.
I was also wondering is it possible to use Final Cut Express's Log and Transfer program directly from files if they are in a different file format.  So far my experiments with this have failed.  But if this is possible, I suppose I can also just convert all the backlogged files wholesale into a format that Final Cut Express supports more easily for Log and Transfer (What file format would this be? Sorry I am new to this).  My new harddrive has a lot of free space, so I could probably handle the huge amount of storage that this would require for the raw footage and then I could erase it after I log and transfer just what I need.   In which case, do folks have recommendations for a file convertor.  I am dealing with over hundreds of files and I don't think the free online convertors would work. This product has been suggested to me, but I know very little about it.
    Thanks!
    Mira

I am also finding, when I use Voltaic trial version, that the quicktime movies it creates are of inferior quality than those created through log and transfer into final cut express and imovie, particularly during rapid movement. There's a lot of visible lines running horizontally around areas of rapid movement (not sure what the lingo is for this).
Anyway, now I am getting accustomed to the idea that my best bet is probably just a high quality converter to get my mts files into something more useable by final cut.  At this point, I am willing to sit through the render time that it will take on final cut express while I edit.  I am just trying to get my footage into workable format without losing quality.
    Thank you!
    Mira
