MTS files folder structure rebuild

Hi, I accidentally uploaded just the .mts files from a batch and I was wondering if there's a way to rebuild the metadata structure with any software, to be able to apply metadata to them.
If not, which is the most similar codec (size-quality wise, without losing quality nor making the files much bigger) to transcode this media that would allow me to inject metadata directly?

Naked MTS files are not supported for storing metadata from Adobe tools.
H264\Match Source can be selected to transcode this media without losing quality nor making the files much bigger and you can ingect metadata to the new clips directly.

How to make file folder structure from virtual folders

But I want the folder structure from the build to become as the virtual folder structure. is there any way of doing this without moving them by hand in the file explorer tab?

Unless you use auto-populating folders (which I don't like), the virtual folders are not meant to reflect the location on disk, so it certainly won't be automatic.
I don't have experience with source distribution, but other build types have the option of configuring destination folders in the Destinations category and then assigning these destinations to items in the projects (including virtual folders, which then takes all the elements inside it) either in the same category or in the one under it, I can't check. I expect that you can do the same in a source distribution.

How to change location of files (folder structure to storing in iPhoto lib)

I need help.
I thought I was smart, but as is always the case, I find out that I am not
I did not trust iPhoto at first. So I retained my images in my 8 years of folder structure (by year and then subfolders of months).
My lib is getting large, 7000 plus images, and when importing images (I do not have the setting for imported images to be stored to iPhoto Lib) and wanting to delete some, I find it more work than is necessary.
Bottom line: Can someone tell me if there is a way to change the setting (of course there is) but also to reimport, or move, my images that are already in iPhoto (but are really just previews referencing to my folder structure) so that they will reside in the iPhoto Lib?
When I import it finds duplicates...if I say do not import then it does not go any further...but if I say "yes, import duplicates" then it brings them in as duplicates...which means I have two copies, but only one retains all of the keywords etc.
Another bottom line: I want to retain my keywords in my current library, but move all images into the iPhoto lib instead of my folder structure. I can do this from this date forward, but I want to get the entire lib to be this way.

Iphoto library to file folder structure on External Hard Drive?

So I've had some recent problems with my iMac that make me question just using regular Time Machine to back up my photos. So I got an external drive and formatted it for both Mac and PC - just in case my computer crashes and I just dump it and go the PC route...sad I know...
But anyways I'm trying to get my photos out of iphoto with a file structure similar to iphoto - but in explorer view. I have gone to Finder and did show package contents. But with iLife 11 the pictures are stored by date, rather than by how I have it in iphoto.
And if I also tried the export feature in iphoto and it seems to get hung up when it sees a MOV file. Any ideas? I don't really want to pay for any kind of app - I'm thinking there is an easy way and I'm just not aware of it.
Please help!

What version of iPhoto? Recent versions of iPhoto 11 have this in the Export panel:
File -> Export

Earlier versions: Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
Be aware that exporting to folders on n external disk is not a back up for your iPhoto Library. Yes, you can choose to export your originals or your versions, but you can't have the connection between them maintained. So you lose the lossless processing. Read the link above on the export settings carefully: do it wrong and you'll lose a lot of data.
Best back up for an iPhoto Library:
Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

Backing up without destroying file/folder structure?

Hello all,
no doubt someone here has already figured this out but I cannot for the life of me see how you back up your files with iMovie 09... it used to be all kept in a single unified XML doc/folder, now... I'm just confused. Can anyone let me know how you back up your files without missing sounds/picts/DV components into a single place? Is there someway of packaging stuff up and then saving it to an external drive?

And here is another method:
1. Open iMovie '09
2. Go to the Project Library and expand the window so you can see all your projects and Mounted Drives
3. Select the desired "Project"
4. Drag the "Project" to the backup Drive
5. A window will pop-up with 2 options: #1 _Copy Project_ or #2 _Copy Project and Events_, choose #2.

Reorganising Folder Structure

Hi,
How do I get iTunes to automatically reorganise the file/folder structure of all my music? I want it to put all the songs in Artist > Album folders. At the moment, I just have a big list of Album folders, which I organised manually myself. I want iTunes to take care of everything, and sort everything the official Apple way.

The thing is, all my songs and folders are already within the iTunes Music folder. My music is currently organised like this:
iTunes Music > Love > 01 Because (Love Version)
But that's not the automatic way that iTunes organises music. If iTunes had organised my files the structure would be like this:
iTunes Music > Beatles > Love > 01 Because (Love Version)
So how do I get iTunes to do this?

Am I able to Log and Transfer m2ts WITHOUT proper folder structure?

Basically what the question says... I've been trying to convert some m2ts footage for use with FCP, and have only just discovered that I could Log and Tranfer it. Unfortunately, the footage I would like to Log and Transfer no longer exists in the proper file/folder structure, just as m2ts files.
Is there still a simple way to use it in FCP via Log and Transfer, or at least without losing quality?

You cannot use log and transfer without the folder structure. Use ClipWrap2 to transcode the media.

Backing up folder structure

hello. i have created my file/folder structure from within Lightroom. When I perform a backup on my computer, are only the bulk set of files being backed up, or is the file structure I set up in LR backing up too? I don't want to lose this file structure as it took me dozens of hours to create. Thanks, Lori

If you are using the software that came with the Lacie drive, you should be able to look at the backups on your Lacie drive, using your operating system, and see how the backup folders are or are not arranged. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that software.

Why no folder structure on Zen tou

I bought my zen touch few month ago. It is first mp3 player for me. Yes,sound great with crappy stock headphone form creative (for someone in this forum talking about). When connect it to my computer. Oh,not support mass storage device. ok, it is mp3 player not removable dri've (i wish it can be soon...). I have problem to organize my song with ID Tag format structure becuase when i want to remove song from playlist but song still appear on player.
It will be easy to use than ID Tag structure.
If it cannot please fix driver/program to allow delete physical file on player from playlist.

It's fundamental to the way the player works, explained in more detail here.
If it's a big issue then you'd be better to get a player that works using file/folder structure.

ITunes Mantch and managing music folder structure

My current music collection is organized on disk using a folder structure of [ARTIST] > [ALBUM] with the songs in the Album folders. If i enable Match and then delete my music and redownload it. will Match default to some kind of logical /file folder structure or will the subsequest downloads be random? Hope the question makes sense. Thanks in advance...

iTunes Match works well with the iTunes options to organise your library - found under the advanced preferences tab. Using this approach typical organisation is by artist by album.

Suggested Folder Structure for Photos

What folder structure do others use to organise their photos, does Lightroom effect this?
The reason I ask is that I've always organised my photos as follows
DVD1
Holiday to blah
Visit by Mum & Dad
Beckys Birthday
DVD2
Once the DVD'n' folder reaches 4.7G I start a new folder. This has been done for backup purposes but means the folder structure is not much use locating photos.
Now that I've started to import into LR I thought if I was going to change the structure then now would be the time to do it!
The question is how do others structure their photos? How to you group the photos into DVD sized groups for backup? Does LR change this?

It sounds like you are using a variation of the DAM Book's method (if you don't know what I'm talking about - forget it). At any rate, in the past I had spent some time deciding on a folder structure. In Aperture, I had a little more control on folder/subfolder naming on import, but had to change that in LR. So for now I import using a user defined destination that puts things into:

Later, after I process those files in the innermost folder (e.g. "20") I add a new folder as follows:

02 <-- contains files from the formet "20".
and move the "20" folder to Saranac Lake and rename by month. This way I know which folder of files has been processed, and whenever I look for specific files *outside* LR (browser or other app) I can find them by location and year. Later, when I import new files from card, new subfolders under "02" are automatically created, for example:

Saranac Lake

I then know files in "28" (the day) need processing. If they are also of Saranac, then I move the files to Saranac Lake, in the appropriate month. On rare occassions, I might have a set of imported files from two, possibly three locations - but I can easly group them by date/time and move them to appropriate folders. In short, I use this structure since at times I search for files when outside LR. Year and location is enough to get me there. Then it's a matter of finding the right month.
This will not work for many/most photographers, but it works for me right now. Before I go too far migrating legacy files into LR, I'll need to revisit this workflow to see if I can improve it or change it completely. (I'll need to decide on this before too long, otherwise I'll have a heck of a lot of folders to change.)
The bottom line is - each user will have to think carefully how the file/folder structure is best designed for their circumstances. In your case, you eventually back up to DVD, so your structure would be more appropriate.
Oh... and LR's ability to preform file/folder operations is one of the main reasons I jumped back to LR from Aperture. (Plus the versions and stacks that AP had all along).

How to rescue MTS files with no AVCHD folder structure?

Occasionally friends ask me for help with AVCHD cameras but as I have not yet got one I have to rely on what I read on the forums.
I have experimented with AVCHD clips from the DVD accompanying Tom's FCE 4 Editing Workshop book and have a couple of questions.
1. From my tests it appears that the whole folder structure is not necessary. Just having the BDMV folder and all its contents appears to be sufficient for FCE 4 to recognise and convert the files. Is this correct?
2. People who accidentally destroy the folder structure and just save the MTS files find that FCE cannot recognise them.
I have found that RevolverHD and VLC can both play the basic MTS but only VLC can transcode them and that is only to a limited number of codecs. However, once transcoded the files could then be put into Streamclip and converted to AIC.
Rather a complex and potentially degrading process.
So what other apps would be better to use for converting MTS to AIC or ProRes?

Let's sort through a few things. Yes, only the BDMV folder is needed, but you need the whole folder, in which case you may as well have all the metadata and take the whole folder structure for archiving.
1440x1080 does not need to be converted to 1920x1080. 1440x1080 is anamorphic AVCHD and is included in the AVCHD specification. In fact there is a 1440x1080 preset in FCE and that's all you have to use. The media is anamorphic, and it displays in normal 16:9 widescreen as 1920x1080.
The same clip when simply rewrapped as an H.264 changed from 23.5MB to 31.4MB.
This appears to be because it was automatically given extra pixels to stretch it out to 1920x1080.
The file size difference is not the pixel size. If the media is 1440x1080 H.264 mts rewrapped to QuickTime the file will be larger because the QT file structure. It will still be H.264 1440x1080.

Working with raw .MTS files, no AVCHD folder structure

Hi, I've backed up raw .MTS files to Blu-ray data discs, just the files not the AVCHD folder structures.
I've read about this and everyone says it's not the right way of doing things, that it requires the entire ACVHD folder structure to function.
However when I load these files back onto my Mac from the discs they import just fine into FCPX 10.1.1 natively or optimized. I've had no issues with it at all so why are people so against that way of doing things?

Your camera(s) shot in a certain format. It could use any of a number of codecs – including variants of MPEG2, H.264, whatever. So you import that into FCP and edit – either natively or in optimized. Then you export. When you export, it recompresses – in this case to a fairly high bit rate version of H,264. But to be clear, it always recompresses – even if your camera used H,264 to acquire the media, and you don't optimize, it will recompress in exporting to Blu Ray specs. Inevitably, there is some loss of infomation. It may or may not be a detectable loss.

Importing .mts files not nested in original camera folder structure

Is there any way to import .mts files already copied to a hard drive, without keeping the camera's folder structure intact, into Premiere Pro CS5.5?
The long version:
I recently purchased an iMac. For years I edited video on Windows using Sony Vegas and Vegas Home Studio. My camera, the Panasonic Lumix TS2, shoots AVCHD video. Vegas has no problem importing and editing AVCHD .mts files from a camera or a hard drive so it wasn't until I attempted to edit some video in Premiere Pro, recieved the "unsupported compressions type" error message and did some searching that I realized folder structure is so critial to working with AVCHD. From what I can tell, the files have to be in the PRIVATE>AVCHD>BDMV>STREAM>xxxxxxx.mts confirguration to be imported via the media browser.
Here is my situation, I have hundreds of .mts files in separate folders, bundled together with photos from the same day or event. I'm on an iMac i7, using an activated version of Premiere Pro CS5.5 from the Master Collection. Is there any way I can import and edit these files natively? And in the future, is there any way around transferring the entire folder structure everytime I want to copy the video files to my hard drive? I use Bridge to import photos and it will just pull the video files off the card and plop them in the same folder. Having to transfer the videos separately seems like a silly work around in our modern age. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Yo! I used to have this problem for about 1 year!! And fixed it about half a year ago and I have never been as happy when I fixed it!
Be sure that your sequence settings are set to the right settings: When you create a new sequence you should be promped with a window asking what settings you want. Open the "AVCHD" folder and there should be 3 folders; 1080p, 1080i, 720p. Pick the one that you filmed at, I film at 1080p, so I open that folder and then you pick the right setting to what you filmed your scene. I film at 24 fps so i pick AVCHD 1080p24 (non-anamorphic). Now there should be a new sequence with the right settings (don't use the same settings as I do unless you have filmed at the same frame rate and that it was filmed at 1080p or 1080i, there is a big difference between "p" and "i"). If you go in to the window in the bottom left corner there should be a tab on that box that says "Media Browser". Click it and the directory to your computer should be shown. If you have your SD card connected there should be something called SD card (or if you have renamed it then it is obvious what you should select). After selecting it there should be a folder called AVCHD and you open it up. This is where it gets tricky... because I don't know what camera you use and don't have any experience with your camera then you will have to go through all the folders that are within the AVCHD folder. They are not so many but in the folder where all the clips are hidden they should be called 00626.mts for example. Then you just select the clips you want to import and import them. This process can also be done by opening Finder (mac) or on PC just open up the same way and select the clips you want and drag them i to your project window
Then if you drag a clip in to the sequence, this is were you see if you did all the steps right (with the sequence settings) then the light above the clip should be yellow, meaning that the playback engine recognizes the format and can play it back without any compression Therefor giving you much better quality videos!
