MTS into FCp6.04

Hello!
Does anyone know the most reliable way to get MTS video files into FCP?
i have downloaded Voltaic and started converting them to MOV files, but Voltaic seems to be struggling and crashes all the time. So far I have converted 90 clips, but still have over 150 to go. I have spent the last 2 days using Volatic but it just keeps crashing on me.
Does anyone know any other way?
The camera i am trying to import from is the Sony HDR-SR12.

Got myself a brand new Intel MacPro with FCP 6.0.4. Hooked up the Sony HDR-SR12E via USB. Pictures will import but after several hours I still can't get the AVCHD footage (.mts files) to import. I'm using Log & Transfer. Tried several ways (draging into L&T window, importing file, importing the main head folder of the HDR-SR12E and also other folders like STREAM) but all the .mts files stay grayed out and are not selectable. When using the add folder button and importing the STREAM folder from the HDR-SR12E I constantly get a message telling me that the folder contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. The HDR-SR12 is pretty full and Sony doesn't support software the get it of the camera into a Mac and since I'm reading a lot about not screwing around with the folder structure I'm not really anxious to do try this. and I need the footage badly.

  • Importing iTunes songs into FCP6

i queried, but didn't find much on bringing audio (purchased songs) from iTunes 8 into FCP6.
i tried using the convert to aiff format in iTunes. some songs are protected, as well. any way to convert them for importing into FCP6?
didn't seem like it was this painful the last time i bought audio into the timeline from iTunes.
    thanks

agree that i don't own it, but to use it in a timeline on my computer isn't any different than playing that same music back through the same computer using iTunes.
Wrong. Listening to the music on your computer, or iPod or car stereo is one thing, but using it in a video...tying it to picture that you intend to show to people...no can do. You can in iMovie...because Apple doesn't seem to care if you use it for home movies. But FCP is professional software, so Apple doesn't allow you to use music in professional productions.

  • How to correctly import .mts into FCP with full 5.1 audio

Well, I've found a couple of solutions to this so far. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a stickie, but it might be useful to others as well.
Getting the audio from new consumer video cameras, for example my Sony HandyCam, which have 1080p video, and 5.1 surround sound audio into FCP can be a bit tricky. The hard part is the audio. FCP will import the camera's .mts files fine using Log and Transfer, but the audio is mixed down to stereo.
This solution was posted over at Ken Story's FCP boards:
    http://www.shedworx.com/hd-information/surround-sound
Although I haven't tried it, it looks very good.
I actually tried the following method, using Parallels (i.e., some form of Windows):
I used TSMuxer in Windows to demux the .mts files. I then used BeLight which is a front end GUI for BeSweet **(you have to download both, and drag both the BeSweet application and the azid.dll file into the BeLight folder before you run). This separates the resulting .ac3 file into 6 mono .wav files.
I then just imported them back into FCP and all was well.
The advantage of this method is that it's free, but the major disadvantage is that it only runs in Windows, so you have to have a PC or emulator. So next time, I'll likely give VoltaicHD a spin.
Hope this helps anyone trying to do the full import to FCP

Oooof! Does this mean that we have to do this procedure, using VoltaicHD, for each and every one of the ~1750 clips with 5.1 surround I have from my trip to China? Perhaps I misunderstood, but it looked like this process was a one-clip-at-a-time process?

  • .MTS into FCP 7

    Hello,
How can I import ".MTS" files into Final Cut Pro 7? I dragged them from my camera's SD card and I'm having trouble importing them. They are not being recognized by FCP. I tried converting them using MPEG streamclip - but that didn't recognize the format either. The files played on VLC but were of a low quality.
Is there a way to import those files on FCP so I can start with the editing process? Or is there
another "free" converter out there I can use?
    Please help me.
    Thanks!

    Thank you for your reply.
Unfortunately, I only dragged the .mts files - will it be of the same quality after conversion if I use Voltaic? Also, does that usually come with an activation key? Is there a free version of this software?
    Thanks again!

  • How can I get my DV-60I video out of my JVC HD-100u and into FCP6

The title says it all. I shot three football games on the JVC hd-100u Camcorder in DV-60I, and another tape in HDV-SD60P. Does anyone know how to properly set up FCP6 to recognize the camera and the footage? I've tried everything I can think of, and keep re-reading the manual, but I'm new to both the camera and FCP and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Not having a time limit when using capture now has been known to fill a hard drive, effectively crashing the drive and the computer.
The inability of cameras to easily connect via firewire comes up here regularly.
Try this as a troubleshooting sequence -
    - Turn everything off
    - If you have an external firewire drive, disconnect it.
    - With only the camera connected to the firewire bus, turn it on
    - Turn on the Computer
    - Open up System Profiler and look for the FIREWIRE section.
    - Do you see your camera listed?
    If no,
    - you have basic connection issues - try the firewire port reset (do a search here on the forum)
    If yes,
    - Open up iMovie and try to capture a short segement.
    - Did it work?
    if no,
    - there is something potentially wacky with your camera settings.
    if yes,
    - Now open up FCP, make sure your firewire communication protocol is appropriate for your camera.
    - Try to log a short clip and capture using Batch Capture.
    - Did it work?
    If no,
    - you likely likely need to reinstall Quicktime. Read through THIS ARTICLE.
    If yes,
    - you may need to install a second bus for your capture drive. You do not want to be capturing to the system drive.
    report back please.

  • Motion graphics from AE imported into FCP6 are jittery

I am having an issue with graphics rendered out of AE, using the Animation codec, imported into FCP 6 being jittery. I am editing in HD, using the DVCProHD 720 P24 settings in my project. The same graphics did not jitter before we upgraded to FCP 6 and Studio 2.
We can get rid of the jitters if we take the file back into AE and render it out using DVCProHD 720 P60 settings. But the graphic designer is using a PC and that codec isn't available there.
Has anyone else had this problem or do you have any suggestions for us?
    Thank you

try rendering out your movie file in After Effects using the Animation copression. This is totally uncompressed and may require rendering in your FCP sequence, but I have always had a sure shot using this codec. It works well for XDCAM and HDV timelines also.

  • Downloading DVCAM into FCP6

I've done this on my PD150 and now on an HVRA1U--with the same result. HELP!
I record in DVCAM mode (with miniDV tape--do I need special DVCAM tape???). When I load in the tape to my miniDV recorder to download to FCP6 (or FCX) the video shows on the screen and runs fine--but when I go to capture it only captures a few seconds and stops with some message about "timecode". The few seconds of video that does download looks fine, but has audio that is interrupted at regular intervals. I've tried downloading with several cameras--same result. Anyone have any idea how I'm screwing this up? Where am I going wrong? With tape, with FCP or FCX settings, or playback machine? Or all of the above?
    bill

do I need special DVCAM tape?
No. Both DV and DVCam can be recorded to the same tape.
when I go to capture it only captures a few seconds and stops with some message about "timecode".
Can you be more specific about what the message says? What timecode mode was used wen recording the tape?
Does it work if you use Capture Now with FCP Device Control set to None?

  • MTS Files into Compressor

    Hello everyone,
I have read various threads explaining why Compressor isn't suitable for converting .mts files into ProRes files and that it will not work.  For some reason, one of my computers is able to do this...but none of my other computers are.  We have NO idea why it works on just one computer (iMac), when we cannot even drag the files into Compressor on the others (Mac Pros and iMacs).  Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

Yes, SJ, FCP L&T does convert AVCHD/.MTS files into ProRes or AIC, however, L&T does not work if the folders or files have been altered or if anything has been deleted from the folder or files.
As I have been researching this the past month, I have seen hundreds of posts on people asking which converter program to use for .MTS files. Other folks have mistakingly saved just the 'STREAM' folder or have done something similar and now L&T will not recognize the .MTS files. What I'm searching for and I know many others are searching for, is an excellent quality conversion program that will convert .MTS into Apple ProRes 422.
PavTube, MovieConverter Studio, MPEG Streamclip, and others suck, they will only convert into a .mov with an H.264(amongst many other non-professional formats and codecs) and then you have to render the files in FCP and the quality takes a major hit. These cheap $35-50 programs will NOT convert to Apple ProRes and they are unreliable.

  • Importing footage from JVC camera in FCP6

    Hi all,
I am working with a JVC Everio HD camera (I think it is the GZ-EX250).  I can't find a way to import footage directly into FCP6. It seems the only way to get the footage in there is to import it into iMovie (I have iMovie 8), then export it as a Quicktime, and then import the Quicktime into FCP. I've done this with footage that was shot using this camera in SD mode. My understanding is that if I want to shoot in HD that I'll havge to convert the footage before bringing it into iMovie. Seems like a pretty cumbersome process. Maybe I'm missing something. Does anyone know how to import my HD footage from this camera directly into FCP6?
I hope my explanation makes enough sense for someone to give me a good answer. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks very much in advance!
    Andy
MacBook Pro (running OSX 10.5.8, 2.4 GHz INtel Core Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM).

Great tutorial - easy to follow. I notice I only had two preferences listed for importing - there was no setting for Apple Pro Res 422 (LT) so I used Apple ProRes 422. Is the lack of choices because I'm using FCP6 not 7, or do the preferences get added as you hook up different cameras? At any rate, thanks for the help!

  • Help with .MTS files

    Hi all
I am sure this has been asked many times, but I really know very little at all about video files and have tried a few things already.. but my lack of skill / understanding isn't helping!
I have some .MTS footage filmed at uni that I need to very simply edit (cut and join different clips). I brought the .MTS files home on my memory stick as I thought, yay, iMovie time! When iMovie didn't recognise the files, I thought I'd have a go with FCPX trial version, which I thought was bound to be able to handle them, as surely such flashy software can handle HD stuff... Alas, no, and I'm gutted.
I have tried to convert my files to .mp4 (seems to be the main option in free converters) but I lose a lot of the quality, they look dreadful. I don't mind losing *some* quality, but these looked totally yucky.
So I wondered if someone might help me understand how to get these .MTS files into FCPX (as I'd really like to try the software out now it's here!). I would try importing direct from the camera, but 1. I left the camera at uni this weekend and 2. I deleted the original files, thinking I'd be fine to, as I have copies in about 3 places. Gah!
Any tips that a simpleton like me can follow would be much appreciated. Sorry if this is a question brought up all the time!
    Sam

    general advice:
Avoid ANY converter, which converts 'orphanized' mts to h.264 - that's a (very) lossy process.
    Why?
    Because, mts IS h.264!
    so, two-and-a-half options:
    • use a converter, such as ClipWrap, able to convert straight to FCPX' intermediate format proRes
    • use an un-wrapper, like free Rewrap2M4V, to 'unpack' the mts into a mov (rename resulting suffix)
    • or, try Panasonics free AVCAMRestorer which claims to re-establish a fully functional AVCHD-structure, which allows FCPX to trigger its own import-routines with your mts

  • Can't see MTS files using mac os 10.9.5 and adobe premiere elements 12

I am using a MacBook Pro and OS is 10.9.5. Adobe premiere elements 12 does not recognize MTS files from my SD card. The OS does not see MTS files from the card as well...but...I have an MTS file on my desktop from before I upgraded from 10.6.8 that can be seen by both Adobe and the new OS.

What are you using as your Add Media/ for the import of your .mts on the SD?
Not sure if the following is a viable question, but....
What happens if you transfer the .mts on the SD card to your computer desktop and then try to
import the .mts into Premiere Elements 12 with its Add Media/Files and Folder/Project Assets?
But on reflection, if your OS and Premiere Elements are both not seeing the file, this does not
present as a Premiere Elements issue, rather an issue between the .mts format and your Mac computer.
If that is a valid observation, have you gotten any input on this from Apple?
Have you looked into converting these .mts files into H.264.mov or .mp4 before use?

Add On....could you give us more information about the .mts file that you said that you have on your new

  • Video file size triples when transferred from camera into FCP

I recorded about 16gb of video in avchd on a canon hf10. When I import it into fcp6 using pro ress 422, the file sizes are enormous, about 100 gb from the original 16. How did this happen and how do I shrink my finished project it back down to fit on a dvd. I used compressor and Mpeg2 and got it down to 3.7gb but the quality was horrendous. I used compressor and h.264 and it took 24 hours then crashed before finishing.
using a canon vixia hf10, and FCP 6.
    Thanks!

AVCHD is not a convenient format for editing so FCP converts it to ProRes which as you have discovered is around 50GB for an hour of footage.
ProRes enables it to be edited more easily and with better quality.
The size in gigabytes of your project is completely irrelevant  .  .  .  .  it could be a terabyte with no problems.
All that matters is the length (time) of the project  .  .  .  .  as long as it is no more than a couple of hours or so you will have no problems fitting it onto a DVD as iDVD or DVD Studio Pro etc. will compress it all down to around 4GB  to fit.

  • Problem Importing Importing Avid Mov File Into FCP

    Hello all,
I had transitioned into this issue off an older thread I had, with a different topic. So I figured it was smarter to just make it it's own thread, since it's become it's own issue.
I am editing the core of a project on Final Cut Pro 6. A portion of the footage that was shot for this project though, was captured on a PC into Avid Media Composer 3.0, and therefore, converted to MXF format.
I am running both Final Cut Pro 6 (FCP 6) and Avid Media Composer 3.0 (AMC3) on my Macbook Pro, so I was able to import this MXF footage into AMC3. That was the easy part. The hard part, has been knowing how to properly export it, so I can then, properly import it into FCP6.
Important detail about the FCP6 System Settings:
    - *The sequence preset is DVCPRO HD - 1080p24*
In the Avid, when I go to export a small 1 min clip (as a test), these are the Quicktime options I am given:
    Fast-Export Quicktime NTSC
    Fast-Export Quicktime PAL
    Make New - QuickTime Reference
    Pro Tools QuickTime (ref)
    QuickTime Reference
    Quicktime Reference DV Codec
    Send To QT Movie
None of them were seeming to work. I was getting this message:
"Long GOP media can not be exported using same as source. Please select a custom resolution or transcode to an I-frame only resolution."
*Send To QT Movie* seems to be the only one that works. But I then had to go in and customize it, making my own Saved preset for this.
I've now so far tried this with 4 custom presets, and while all of them are able to export and play / look fine on my desktop..... none of them import correctly into FCP6. They'll play as clips... but completely stuttery and unusable. I'll then drop them into a sequence, and they'll play for about 3 seconds and then I'll get this message:
    "Warning - Dropped Frames
One or more frames were dropped during playback.
    If this occurs frequently, try:
    - Turning off 'Unlimited RT'
    - Lowering your compression data rate.
    - Closing open sequences.
    - Lowering the preference for real-time audio tracks.
    - Increasing the speed of your system and/or disk drives and/or network connection."
Now, I've also gotten a message about the projects needing to have the same capture preset, but I can't replicate it at the time of this post. Though, I'm sure this is probably the root of the problem.
Here's why: In AMC3, with my custom export preset, I notice that Avid supports the DVCPRO codecs, but doesn't have the exact one I'm using in FCP6.
    Here's what I have in my AMC3:
DV/DVCPRO - NTSC (this is the one I'm using, and have tweaked the frame rate to 23.98)
    DVCPRO - PAL
    DVCPRO HD 1080i50
    DVCPRO HD 1080i60
DVCPRO HD 1080p25 (this one is close...)
    DVCPRO HD 1080p30
    DVCPRO HD 720i50
    DVCPRO HD 720i60
    DVCPRO50 - NTSC
    DVCPRO50 - PAL
Now, you'll remember that my sequence preset in FCP6 is DVCPRO HD - 1080p24.
Because this doesn't exist in Avid, I went with DVCPRO HD 1080p25 and just customized the frame rate to 23.98.
    Still no cigar though.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should further customize the Avid codecs? Or is there even a way to just download more Avid DVCPRO codecs so I can find one with 1080p24?
Sorry for such a long post. I like to be thorough.

    Hi Kyle,
    Just some more backstory:
This was a two day shoot.
    - One Day 1 of the shoot (Saturday), we shot with the Sony camera, on Sony DVC tapes (MiniDV). This was about 20 gigs worth of media shot that day. That footage was later captured onto an Avid MC 3.0 in MXF format. (I still have it all raw on my passport drive if you need further info about those files)
    - On Day 2 of the shoot (Sunday), we got the camera we wanted all along for the shoot -- the Panasonic HVX200. Therefore, all of Day 2 was shot on P2 cards, converted on a Macbook Pro, and then put onto an external harddrive. This was about 80 gigs of media.
Right now, when I watch the Sunday footage (Sony) on FCP6, I do indeed see faint horizontal lines on the canvas, when free-framed and at 100%. They're not terrible... but they're there. (I'm not great at this, so if you need total confirmation, I can upload you a large rez screenshot so you can decipher if the interlaced lines are there)
Now, I just checked this out on the Sunday footage as well (the Panasonic P2 card footage which wasn't converted, but imported directly into FCP6, without need for the Avid as the middle-man), and I see the same faint lines on this as well.
Both pieces of media (the original Panasonic footage and the converted Sony footage) are at 29.97FPS. Both are at the same Compressor now (DVCPRO HD 1080p30) per your instructions . Meaning, the Pansonic footage brought into FCP6 had that as a preset from the moment I installed the program and was asked to choose my project settings..... and once you explained to me how to look for this, I then sought to match it on the Avid end, and changed the EXPORT settings on the Avid files to that codec.
So both sources medias match now in FCP6. They also play now without stutter.
But they both do have those lines. Albeit, faint, but I'm concerned about them now.
So I think this definitely has to do with my Final Cut Audio/Video settings:
My Sequence Preset is: DVCPRO HD - 1080p24
My Capture Preset is: 1080p24 48KHz
Should the Sequence Preset be changed to p30?
And if so... will I then have to recapture all the Panasonic footage back in? (I'd lose all my log notes and shot names).
Or, can I just delete the two timelines, change the sequence setting, and then redrag them back in?
Thanks for all your help, Kyle.

  • Sony NEX-5N and FCP6

I am about ready to buy a Sony NEX-5N, but I don't want to upgrade to FCP-X just yet. Will I be able to import or open HD files from the camera into FCP6, and how?

    Shane,
Thanks a bunch. I just watched your tapeless workflow tutorial for FCP 7.  Would most of that apply to FCP 6? I clicked around a little in the app, and it appears that it would.
Also, using ClipWrap2, would I "rewrap" the files and then log and transfer?

  • Files with the suffix .mts

    Dear All,
I purchased some years ago the Adobe premier elements version 3.0.
I try to import video files with the suffix ".mts" but it didn't worked. I have some question in this regards:
    1. Does this version (3.0) of Adobe Premier elements support those kind of files (with the suffix .mts)?
    2. If the answer to the first question is positive - What is the way to import and worked with those kind of files? if the answer to the first quesion is negative - do the latest version (ver. 13) of Adobe Premier Elements support those kind of files?
    Kind regards,
    GUy

    Hamtsani
Your files probably are ones that use AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) video compression and the .mts file extension (which is referred to as a container format).
Putting the file extension aside for the moment, I believe it was not until Premiere Elements 7 that Adobe supported files that use AVCHD video compression.
AVCHD is a resource demanding format, and your Premiere Elements 3.0/3.0.2 is only a 32 bit application which has resource implications.
What is your computer operating system? Premiere Elements 13 does not support Windows XP or Vista. And, Premiere Elements 13 Windows is only a 64 bit application when it is run specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit. That has lots of resource implications.
I do not recall the Sharing opportunities in Premiere Elements 3.0/3.0.2, but you could consider converting what I believe to be your AVCHD.mts into a MPEG2.mpg file and then trying to import that into your Premiere Elements 3.0/3.0.2 project with the most appropriate project preset available.
    Please review and consider.
    Thank you.
