MTU setting

I'm at school, in my dorm, looking at my xbox 360 test screen, and the only thing keeping me from signing into xbox live is the MTU setting. I have no idea what an MTU setting actually is, but I know it has to be at 1364 for my system to run online. I'm using a linksys 5 port hub, and don't have the paperwork with me so I have no idea how to change the MTU setting. Can anyone help me out?

well "HUB" is just a passthrough device... so i don't think you can change the "MTU" size on hub...

What is the ideal MTU setting for both Wan ports in the above configuration?

Yes, traffic will return to the same public IP (WAN) that originated it.  I thought your OP and maybe due to the 1st response you wanted to also protocol bind the inbound traffic too which isn't necassary as you've descibed here but if you initiate traffic from the internet to your LAN you just have to pick the correct public IP.
Which direction do you want this to work?  Are clients on this LAN initiating RD connections to hosts through the internet or are you wanting to connect to hosts on this LAN from the internet?

  • MTU Setting Is Too Low

I cannot connect to xbox live because of this, all of my computers work fine but my xbox will not allow me to connect to live being the MTU is too low.. I,ve done countless power cycles and I've called both linksys and xbox live support. If anyone has any idea on how to help, please don't hesitate to post.

I have the same problem Im using the Wrt54G linksys wireless-g router, changed the MTU to 1365, and am failing the xbox live mtu test. The router was fine at 1500, when I had my old motorola surfboard modem, I traded in for a newer model the Sb5120. And so far, no xbox. Dont know what else to do.  Xbox customer support is a joke.  Comcast is a joke. I dont know how to change the MTU setting on the modem, don't think thats the problem anyway its default is 1500.
I have the modem going to the router, the router going to the xbox 360. No xbox live tho.  Reset everything multiple times.  So now Im asking you guys for your help. Im gonna call comcast tomorrow see what they have to say, even tho the people there are monkeys with typewriters.... I should have never switched modems....

  • MTU setting not persistent?

Hello Guys sorry if this has been posted. I need some help, I've been trying to set my network MTU setting manually however everytime I reboot my MBP it always go back to automatic configuration. I'm aware that you have to be the system admin to change the setting. Do I really have to configure my MTU everytime I reboot my MBP or Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance...

    ??
1500 is the largest possible value. You can't use a value higher than that. If you entered a value of 1600 in the terminal you were probably using a value of 100.
Usually people suffering from problems caused by MTU find relief using values of 1490 or even 1492.

  • IPad MTU setting

Recently I began having problems when surfing the web (incomplete pages) with my apple products (I have a windows computer that experienced no problems). I contacted my ISP and they instructed me to change the MTU setting to 1942 instead of 1500, and it worked great on the mac.
*How do I change the MTU setting in the ipad* or iphone? I understand it has to be changed in each device, since it can not be changed in the time capsule.
    Thanks for the help!

if you have partial page loads, that sounds like a DNS issue. try manually setting your DNS to 8.8.8.8 to test things out and see if it works better. DNS problems are pretty common

  • EA6500 Wireless Issues Performance Test and MTU setting

Just changed from DSL to Comcast Internet with a 25Mbps download service.  Purchased the Comcast the Linksys cable modem to match the EA6500.  Last night when testing doing some Netflix HD streaming while downloading Direct TV HD movie noticed that performance was not streaming HD in fact it was as bad as the slow DSL.
So tried the Smart Wifi Performance test several time and downloads were terrible 3.0 Mbps, however, when testing with other testers, speakeasy, speedtest performance was above 25 Mbps.  Called support and they had no answer.
What is wrong with the speed test smart wifi?  Why was I not getting HD streaming speeds?  I shoulf have plenty of bandwidth.
Also I can seem to find the right MTU setting.  Every packet amount I ping is working so I can not get a fragmented error.
I thought this router was advertised as a HD video router.
I have just about everything disabled including Media Priority.
    Comments, Ideas, help,
    Thank you

    Hi!
To get the optimum HD streaming performance, you can try setting the following on the router's page :
     - disable or turn off  WMM Support  under Media Prioritization.
     - personalize the wireless settings, set different names on the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks.
Let the streaming devices connect to the 5Ghz network.

  • Mtu setting on adsl

cisco 2561xm router with WIC1-adsl card and NM-16ESW switch
    IOS: c2600-ipbasek9-mz.124-23.bin
I recently had to temporarily disconnect my above router for a few days and replace it with a cheap plastic home router and was embarrased to discover my adsl broadband speed shot up 45% with the cheap router. With the cisco 2651XM I always got a max download of 400kb/sec but with the cheap router I was getting 580kb/sec. Clearly something is wrong with my cisco config, I put this down to the mtu setting, which in the cheap router wasn't shown but set to auto. I've tried different mtu settings in the cisco router (including 'no mtu' but never get more than 400Kb/sec.
My isp indicates optimum mtu is 1500 but that doesn't produce any speed increase. What can I do here to get the cisco router working to maximum speed?

I am not sure I am saying correct or not but if you can try :
    (Copied from other Similer question:)
Turning off the IPS (intrusion prevention system
you have IPS enabled on the router. Leaving the firewall ON, try disabling the IPS feature completely, saving, and then power cycling. Because IPS strips each packet and looks for malicious code/abnormalities, it has the potential to create a lot of overhead.

  • Default MTU setting

So I was having issues using publicvpn.com and one of the suggestions was to enter the following command in the terminal sudo ifconfig en1 mtu 1200 however now when downloads are cutting out. Is there a way to revert back to the OEM setting and if so how?
    Thank you

You can just re-issue the ifconfig command with a different value. The default is typically 1500, but may be lower depending on your network configuration.
Alternatively, since changes made via ifconfig are transient, you can just reboot your machine and revert to defaults.

  • Recommendation for IP MTU setting with DMVPN

I have a dual DMVPN setup which works fine, apart from a performance issue. Its probable that this is a packet fragmentation issue as I'm seeing many reassambled fragments on my encryption routers. The IP MTU value on the tunnel is 1436, as recommend by R Deal in his VPN configuration guide. If I remove the IP MTU 1436 command, and let IOS select its own value that returns 1472 for IP MTU.
Reading up on Cisco.com various values are mentioned, 1400, and 1440. As this is a production network under change control I'm after recommendations from other working networks, to get this fixed.
I'm also using MSS adjustment for TCP setting a value of 1360, and have a route-map to clear the DF bit in TCP and UDP frames.
I'm using IPSec transport mode, and there are no NAT boundaries for the IPSec to cross.

    Hello aacole,
Although I don't have a problem with MTU as such, performance is an issue. I believe this can be improved by tuning MTU configuration even if it's a little bit. Did you manage to reach optimal working figures and settings for MTU on DMVPN?

  • MTU setting for 21CN & ADSL2+

I have been reading the SINET BT documents which state MTU should be set at 1500:
    7.1 Frame sizes
The maximum MTU size on the BT Broadband network is 1500 bytes – the WBC infrastructure now ensures that End User data packets up to and including this size are carried without fragmentation. WBC Customers should use an MTU size of 1500 bytes on the link toward the MSIL.
However, when I run tests I suffer from packet fragmentation.  To avoid fragmentation the maximum MTU value I could set was (1464 + 28) = MTU 1492.
Any ideas why my max MTU conflicts with the settings stated by BT?

  • What is the default MTU setting for bt home hub 4?

Hi everyone, I am setting up a non-bt modem/router, and I am being asked for a MTU value. Please can you tell me what the default mtu was for the bt home hub 4 (my old router)? Since I'm on the same line that's the value I need. If it helps, I think I'm on adsl 1 since my predicted line speed is about 1.5 Mbps. Thanks!

  • Internet sharing requires special MTU setting in n...

I'm facing a strange issue with my Lumia 520 when using the Internet sharing feature: the phone nicely establishes a data connection with the 3G network, my notebook PC also nicely connects to the Lumia's WLAN "access point". However data transfer is very poor (when e.g. browsing the web) and times out frequently (at the very same time it works just nicely for the pages when using the phone's browser though). I realized that this issue is somehow related to packet fragmentation/MTU as everything starts to work really nicely when changing the WLAN MTU _on the notebook_ to 1400 (or less). Unfortunately this work around cannot be used with an Android tablet that I also tried, because it does not allow to change the MTU size. The internet sharing feature of the Lumia is almost unusable with that tablet. Did anybody face a similar issue? Any better way to deal with this than manually chaning the MTU size? (Actually I think this is also just a bad work around - I suspect the Lumia's got some problem with fragmentation. I made some tests with packets of different sizes carrying a DF bit (preventing fragmentation). All packets <1400 byte will pass the Lumia, while everything >1400 seems to be dropped.)

I am able to reproduce your findings here with my Nokia Lumia 620 (Amber) and Nokia Lumia 820 (Portico) and Vodafone Germany. My Apple iOS 7, Google Android 4.4, and a Samsung ATIV S (Windows Phone 8, GDR2) all allow 1500 as MTU. Nokia is fixed to 1400. I tested this on my Mac OS X with:
    ping -D -s 1372 www.vodafone.de
    ping -D -G 1500 -g 448 -h 64 www.vodafone.de
Furthermore, if I use a web-browser like the built-in of Android 4.2, surf via the Nokia Lumia, and I connect to a webpage which is linked with an MTU larger than 1400, like www.vodafone.de itself: The website does not load. Same website works with the same SIM at the same place with my Samsung ATIV S at the same software version.

  • Can I set the MTU size for the Airport Extreme?

Can I change the MTU size setting of the Airport? How would this be possible? In my Linksys router I was able to change this.

Since the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not modify the packets in any way. So as neptune2000 stated, there is no MTU setting. Whatever MTU your computer broadcasts with is unchanged by the AEBS.
You will need to configure the MTU on the computer sending the packets.
