Much slower speeds downstream of HomeHub

I've just moved to BT Total Broadband 2 using a HomeHub (3). It's the speed reports that puzzle me.
Between exchange and HomeHub, BT reports 8.63Mbps, between HomeHub and computer it's 4.23 Mbps, via WiFi. (I live in a city centre location in an apartment complex where the wiring is communal.)
At the time there were no other devices using the service that I am aware of. I had cycled the power to the HomeHub prior to the test.
Can anyone suggest what could be causing the loss? Or how I can find out?

  • Slow speeds, almost dead, can't figure out what's ...

Hi all, I've had very slow speeds from my homehub for almost a week. I've tried a factory reset on the hub to no avail. I also spoke to technical support in India I think, but they were no help.
When I perform a speed check the speed from the exchange to my house is fine, it's after that it dies a death.
I've checked all cables and it is not cabling after the hub as this problem effects internet tv's that are connected via ethernet cable and others that are wireless and also tablets that work on wifi.
In the last week I have had download speeds as low as 0.03 and for only a few hours last Monday has it been OK all of a sudden. I presumed a fix elsewhere but the problem came back an hour or two later.
At the moment we can't use iplayer, youtube and every webpage takes ages to load. It's quite horrible.
Has anyone got any idea's what could be wrong and are there any diagnostic tests I can run on the hub to see if it's borked.

  • Slow speeds using airport express 1st generation

I am currently using an airport express 802.11n 1st generation. I have a direct link from my modem to the airport express which provides a wireless connection to 4 other devices, my macbook pro (2009), iphone 5, android phone, and a windows computer.
I have been seeing very variable download speeds when using speedtest.net on both my macbook and iphone. I had just assumed it was my internet provider. However, I tried connecting my macbook directly to my modem using an ethernet cable instead of through the airport express. When I did that I had the full 50 Mb/sec download speed that I am paying for. When I then reconnect the airport express and measure the download speeds through wifi and with all 4 devices connected, I see much slower speeds, anywhere from 4 Mb/sec to 30 Mb/sec, but never the full 50 Mb/sec.
It seems that when my download speeds are really slow and I reset the airport express by just unplugging it and then plugging it back in, the speeds generally seem to improve, but again they usually average around 15 Mb/sec.
Another thing, it seems like the download speeds improve if only 2 devices are connected and not all 4. Yet, this seems unlikely, I would expect that the airport express could handle more than 4 devices!
When I connect with airport utility, the airport express has the latest firmware. I can't think of much else that would cause these slow speeds.
Any help would greatly be appreciated!
    Thanks.

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that appears during these hours that is preventing your 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) from providing a clean RF signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

Things You Can Do To Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. SyncTwoFolders
      6. Synk Pro
      7. Synk Standard
      8. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • New Contract -- Very Slow Speeds--900kbps

Hi Everyone, i am glad to find a community service like this.
I have been a BT Broadband customer since the start, BT has always been a good reliable service.  For approx two years I had the unlimited 8meg service that included a mobile phone.  BT Anywhere.  I phoned BT to cancel the mobile phone, during the call I was told i was paying too much for my service and if i signed up to Option 3 up to 20 meg BB i could save £20 I Did, I was promised no changes to my speed. This new contract started on the 31 Aug. No problems until last week.
On my old 8meg contract i could guarantee speeds of 2500-3000kbps during the day and 5000kbps after 12am. The last 5 days all I can get is 900kbps, at any time, trying multiple routers etc .... I am not sure if this change is tied into my contract.  I normally use a Netgear DG router which reports a downstream of 5000+.  To show stats and to test i am using my HomeHub.  Any suggestion/help what has caused the slow speed all of a sudden would be greatly appreciated.
I phoned Customer Service...and to be honest i did not get an answer just unplug this ..unplug that ..etc no changes. An engineer was booked for next month, not sure what they will do.
    Thanks

  • Slow speeds on new BT Service in comparison with o...

    Hi all
I would love some help with this problem: I transferred by Sky package over to BT on 5 October and have seen a deterioration in speed since. I have called the Indian call centre several times and today, after I tried out a new BT Home Hub 2 they sent me, I'm at wits' end! The problem, needless to say, is consistently there.
For the record, I have made sure I've followed your forum's excellent help regarding improving slow speeds. I have ensured all my phone sockets are fitted with working ADSL filters. The Homehub has been moved around the room to several locations, all proving the interference I'm getting is not affected by location at home. My main socket for the hub is fitted with an Accelerator (which did make a slight improvement initially). However, the speeds I was enjoying prior to BT have diminished so far that it seems illogical that the problem exists at my end.
I have a BT Vision box too which works fine through the Comtrend ethernet / wireless sockets provided by BT. Turning these off has no effect on the speed. I bought a hub phone which works fine too.
Here are some stats from TBB's speed test. I performed a BT Speed test earlier and the results are consistently similar. I would have posted the BT results, but they reset before I could do so. Time pressures being what they are, I have to leave in a moment so I cannot wait another hour or so to repeat! 16/02/10 was Sky. Again, everything later than 05/10/10 is BT's.

I am running interleaved ADSL and am a WoW gamer. I'm not sure if this makes much difference...
Thank you very much in advance for your help. Pardon if I don't bother calling India again - they have been unhelpful in trying to solve this issue.

  • Reset hub and now getting extremely slow speeds...

    Hi there,
So I have had bt broadband for 3 months and had nothing but problems. The speed is very slow, though I do live in a rural area so somewhat to be expected. However in the evenings I have noticed I can get extremely high pings (1000+) and slow speeds (below 0.5 mbps).
Recently however my usual daytime speeds of around 1.2 mbps shot up to around 3 mbps, which to me is quite high! (compared to what I have been getting).
Though it dropped off a bit over the past few days (to around 2.2 mbps) it was still working ok, until last night when I reset my homehub as my sister was unable to connect to it at all.
Since then I have had nearly none existant speeds. Even getting on here was a mission. I am getting speeds of around 0.10 mbps, though my ping seems to vary wildly from around 50 all the way back up to silly numbers.
I attempted to use the bt speed test, but it told me it couldn't get a reading cos my line was too slow!
I did however get one eventually from BT wholesale as below. (it won't let me copy it in?...)
    Download speed (mbps): 0.14
    Upload speed (mbps): 0.35
    Ping Latency (ms): 69.63
    Speedtest.net give the following
Really getting fed up with the unreliable and slow connection. When added to the problems getting a line installed in the first place (it took 3 months!) and problems I have had in the past, I am seriously looking to see what other options I have, but there aren't many good providers that will set us up out here
Can anyone help me get a stable, reasonably fast connection?
    Thanks,
    Richard

I currently have the hub connected to the master socket via a filter. I have tried on the main socket and master socket with two different filters and nothing changed...
As for the btspeedtester, I was unable to successfully run that...It just says my connection may be too slow (no kidding!)
Finally, regarding the quiet line test...I don't actually have a phone at the moment. I only wanted broadband as I rarely make phone calls from the house and use my mobile. I am looking to get one for the sole purpose of fixing this issue (and ringing bt to have a whinge at them)
    Thanks,
    Richard

  • Slow speeds for the past 2 weeks

For the past 2 weeks I have been having very slow speeds. At first I thought it was the westell modem which kept powering down, rebooting every 30+ mins or would save the network settings. Purchase a new modem still have the slow speed minus the constant reboots and loss of settings.
Any chance to get my speeds up to what Iam currently paying for?

Your line isn't in a very good shape to be running on the 1.5Mbps-3Mbps package. As it stands, you barely have enough capacity to support even 1/3 of the 1.5Mbps provisioning. There's simply too much noise.
What you should do first is take one of your modems out to your NID, if you have access to one and plug it into the test jack found inside of the NID. If there is a telephone plug already inserted into it, remove it to gain access to the jack (this will disconnect your home's wiring until you reconnect it). From there, sync up the modem and post up the new Transceiver Statistics you obtain.
Have your speeds been at 1.5-3Mbps in the past? That would also help us. Lastly, if you have Voice Service with Verizon, do you have any noise on your line, such as humming, buzzing, loud static or popping?

  • Incredibly slow speeds

    Hello
For the second day running I'm experiencing incredibly slow speeds on my option 3 broadband package.
My Homehub says my downstream is connected at 283kbps, and my upstream at 440kbps. Normally my downstream is 8000kpbs or so
I spent a very very long time on the phone to BT yesterday, who told me a variety of different things, but nothing that resolved it.
Can one of the mods have a look for me please?? I don't know how it'll ever get fixed otherwise!!
    Best,

    There's something massively wrong here...
I'm pretty good with figuring out computer things. Of course, I've done all the usual, restarting the hub, swapping the microfilter etc.
Initially I thought I may have been capped, but the helpdesk told me this wasn't the case. My download rate is exactly 28kb/s, not a kilobyte over or under which would indicate some form of limiter applied...
I really need the net functioning correctly today and tomorrow, as I'm working from home... obviously BT's timing is perfect
Hopefully someone from BT will see this and take a look for me?

  • Really slow speeds during the daytime?

So i've been with BT for as long as i can remember (Broadband Option 3) and for as long as i remember it's never been that great. Not bad, but not great. Apparently i should be getting up to 8mbps but i was normally around 3mbps, which was never slow enough to bother complaining about. But in the last 2 weeks for some reason im getting extremely slow speeds during the day. From 1pm - 1am i've have around a 1mbps (if im lucky), and from 1am - pm i'll have 5 - 6mbps (which is faster than normal). Im really not sure what's going on, but it makes it impossible to do anything other than use text based websites during the day, which is a pain. Im about 250 metres away from my local exchance so i don't see why im getting 1mbps all day.
Also the wireless connection in my house is awful. My laptop that's 2 ft away from my router (BT Homehub 1 or maybe 1.5 im not sure) and it's getting a 2/5 bar signla strength. I could connect to my neighbours wifi and have a stronger signal. Addmitiedly the Home Hub is pretty wore down, so would getting the Home Hub 4 improve the wireless connection or the speeds problems? Is there any way to get it without paying £60? I mean i could switch to sky broadband, get a new router, and get a years worth of broadband for cheaper than that. The only thing keeping me with BT right now is BT sports, and i can't even any BPL games on that anymore since my connection is too slow when the games are on.
    Here's the current speed (9:30 PM) http://www.speedtest.net/result/3704808533.png
I'll post the updated speed at around 2am and see how much better it is. Also any other tests/information you guys might need. Thanks.

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Slow Speeds/Should be getting a better synch rate?

    Hello,
I have been using BT for my broadband service now for many years, and is becoming clear to me that I should be receiving a much improved speed than I am currently getting.
Using multiple speed checkers and my own knowledge, I have realised that I am only receiving a small 5.3mb/s, compared to when my line attenuation shows that I can easily be receiving 8mb/s. I understand that with my exchange shows it can only receive 4.9, but a friend of mine is receiving 9mb/s on the same exchange only around 1000 metres away? I cannot understand how.
Also for some reason my sons online game play when playing on the xbox is VERY disrupted due to lag, he will experience major lag spikes at random intervals for no reason, it has gotten to the point that this happens all the time, not just at peak times.
My apologies if it seems like I'm on a rant, but I'm fed up with the complaints from my son and my internet being so slow even for all that I use it for, which is minimal. We are on the up to 20mb/s package, so we should EASILY receive more than we are.
    Thank you,
    Angie Wright.

Now I can understand that this shows I am getting more than I should, but my attenuation shows that I should be getting a much better sync rate.

  • Why is PE12 so much slower than PE11?

I have been using PE11 on a quick machine with 8GB of RAM without any issues.  Thought I'd 'Upgrade' to PE12 and everything is (literally) 10 times slower.  I have to render everything before I can ply it in the timeline (never had to render in 11) and the rendering can be as slow as one frame a second.  Obviously this is unworkable when I import 20mins of video and it's 40,000 frames to render.  If I import the same info into PE11 it doesn't even need rendering.  I can drag along the blue arrow and see it all move as fast as I like with the stuttered audio going along with it.  In PE12 I need to move the arrow to a given point - stop it - and wait about 5 seconds to see the frame that is there and then it might play after about 5 seconds.
It's driving me mad and I just can't fathom it.  Same machine - same file - same request of the software, but drastically different results.
I want to get my money back on PE12 as it was a waste of time - but don't know if that is possible.
Anyone else experiencing performance issues with 12?
Looking on the Internet in general it seems many many people have this issue (one chap had 32Gb RAM and experienced the same problems).  Must be down to the software.
    Cheers

Hi ATR - and thanks for the comprehensive comments.  I am also running Windows 8.1 64 bit.
Appreciate the advice on getting a refund for the software - I may well use that if I can't find out why things are so slow.
I will try to answer your questions below...
I bought this laptop new a couple of weeks ago, so not much opportunity for things to get too clogged up yet - having said that, one of the programs that always goes on any of my PC's is Ccleaner so that was installed right away (and has been regularly run).
I actually tried the Adobe support chat 3 times last night - but each time I was onward connected to tech support and after pleasantries, they dissapeared each time. So I gave up on that.
Yes - I have 11 and 12 on this same machine.  In fact I've been experimenting this afternoon with using each program in isolation and also together - loading snips of video and rendering / saving / exporting to DVD.  I am burning a DVD now with 11 which is the only one I have the patience for at the moment.  I'll try burning the same clip from 12 when this is done.
Then there are the typical questions...
    a. What project preset?
    b. What are the properties of what is going on that Timeline?
    c. Even with your present computer environment, how much multitasking is going on?
    d. Latest version of QuickTime installed?
    e. Run As Admininstrator and User Account with Administrative Privileges?
    f. Video card/graphics card driver version up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the video card/graphics card?
    a. Not sure about the project preset (am new to Elements) but I guess they are default - I did notice when I went to 'adjust' and 'Smartfix' there was a green icon in it - so I clicked reset to get rid of that - thought that might have had a bearing on the slow speeds.
    b. not sure of details here either - I have basically used a USB to phono convertor to transfer a load of Video8 footage off my camera with the default settting (MPEG).  I've been capturing for about 30mins at a time and then putting 2 or 3 of the 30min sections into the timeline (but have also now played with far smaller (2 to 5 minute) sections of captured video to compare and contrast on speeds for various processes with more manageable chunks of video. Thus far I am leaving the video as is - I.e.apart from introducing a transition affect between sections, I have no narration or effects or soundtrack - just the raw MPEG video (and sound) on video1 and audio1
    c. Multitasking apps / programs - I do have a few things running, but nothing serious - I will get rid of all else that's running when carrying out some more tests - good point, thanks.
    d. Erm - not sure about QT - will have a look and update this evening if necessary
    e. Yes - running as admin - although I possibly wasn't before... Do I have to right-click the icon to invoke this every time?  I tested after running as admin and it made no difference
    f. Like QT - I will check the video card software - being a new machine I did have it do quite a few updates when I got it home (including 8 to 8.1 upgrade).
I have now captured about 30 hours of Video8 from the late 80's onto the laptop and need to move on to my next video camera, the VHS-C beast which has early footage of the kids etc.  It feels good to know I'm finally getting this stuff digitised, but I won't be able to cope with editing and burning it on DVD at the speed PrE12 is going...
Thanks again for the time in coming back to me.  I shall address the QT and video card drivers issues tonight and see how I go.
Fundamentally, I just cannot see why I have such a pronounced difference in performance between the two versions - seems very odd.
    Cheers,
    Tom.
