Mugshot as Custom Avatar. How to crop photo?

Dear Fellow Mac Users,
I am trying to place my mugshot as my custom avatar. My photo is JPEG.
I have tried this on my profile page:
Actions > Change photo & avatar
Scroll down, click on Add Another Avatar
Choose File, Upload & Continue
Crop
However, I found it to be difficult to drag the cropping handles to exclude unwanted background and still show my mug. (I want my chin in the photo.)
I found this:

I need to make a photo smaller for use as an avatar. Cropping will not work for this purpose
How do I resize a photo?
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)
This solved my question by Old Toad  on Sep 28, 2011 4:59 AM
First crop the photo to the correct size ratio, i.e. square.  Then export the file via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option.  Select Size=Custom and put in the pixel dimension required for the avatar.
Can anybody please tell me what I need to do to crop to a square then export with the required pixel dimension? I have tried iPhoto and Preview without success.
I am posting in Apple Support Communities > Using Apple Support Communities. Please advise if there is a more appropriate forum.
Regards,
Ian.

Thanks Larry. It was the 100 x 100 that did the trick.
Thanks seventy one for the tip to try iPhoto forum.
Thanks Frank. The post I pointed to did not say which app to use to crop to a square.

  • Controlling how ATV crops photos?

When I manually click through my library of photos, the ATV seems to randomly crop in on the photos. I have a 42" HDTV, so the format translation should be fine, but photos getting chopped off and not all in the same manner.
    Anybody?

Exactly how the tv chooses to crop photos that don't match the output ratio of 16:9 is something I haven't given a lot of thought to. The fact that it does simply doesn't suit me, although it likely just crops evenly top and bottom.
I've chosen to crop all my photos to 16:9 myself for the tv, this way I get to choose which areas get cropped and which don't.
You should also be aware of overscan, something that every tv does to a differing extent and something that has nothing to do with the tv. If you choose to manually crop your photos as I do you should make allowances for this.

  • How to crop photos on iPhone without reducing quality?

I've discovered that the crop function in the standard Photos app reduces the resolution of the remaining portion of the photo (beyond what you would expect after removing part of the image). The Photos app seems to re-encode the image at a lower image quality than the Camera app achieved when it originally took the photo.
For example, if a I take a photo with the Camera at 2448x3264 (3.4MB), and crop all four edges a little in Photo, it reduces to 1536x2047 (992K). If I load the uncropped image into Preview on my Macbook, and do the same crop (as close as I can - and I tried to get it very close indeed) - the image is 2107x2860 (2.1MB). Furthermore, when I look at all three images - uncropped, iPhone-cropped and Preview-cropped - at "Actual size" in Preview, it's clear that the iPhone-cropped image has been reduced (ie. it appears "zoomed out", or smaller dpi) compared to either the uncropped or Preview-cropped images.
Does anyone know if there's a way to crop images on the iPhone without reducing the image quality in this way?

Thank you for the quick reply.
Yes, I understand that a crop function should just remove parts of the image without changing the resolution of what remains. But that's not what I see on the iPhone.
Let's say I have a photo taken on the iPhone which is 2000x3000, and there's a VW van in the photo which is roughtly 500x500 pixels in dimension. If I crop the photo to only include the van, I'd expect to have a 500x500 image. And indeed, that's what I see when I crop the photo in Preview on my Macbook.
When I perform the same crop in Photo on the iPhone, however, I get an image of the van which is smaller - only about 375x375 pixels. It's exactly the same part of the photo, but the iPhone seems to reduce the resolution of the remaining image, not just remove the parts that were cropped.
I'm looking for a way to crop an image on the iPhone without reducing the resolution of what remains. Anyone know of an app that can do that?

  • How do you invoke the customer satisfaction guarantee on HP photo paper?

OK, perhaps this is a silly question, but I can't find anything on the HP site or forums that addresses this.  How does one invoke the customer satisfaction guarantee on HP photo paper?  The instructions in the box (and website) tell me to call HP customer care.  I did that, and spent 25 minutes having a technician tell me it was a problem with my printer (HP Photosmart C6180), my printer was out of warranty, and I would need to exchange it and pay a fee to upgrade to a newer model with a 1 year warranty.  She seemed not to care or know anything about the customer satisfaction guarantee for paper; she was only trained to tell you the problem was most surely with the printer.
In case anyone here can help, I have the HP Premium Plus 4x6 glossy paper, and whenever I use it the picture quality is extremely poor--not at all what I expected from the paper.  It appears the ink has "balled" up, and it looks very splotchy.  I am setting the paper type appropriately when printing, and I use original HP 02 inks.  When I use other photo paper to print photos, they come out perfectly.  Having wasted quite a bit of ink and paper trying different things, I'm just not satisfied and would like to discuss this further with HP.

The only numbers available (I've just reached over and picked up a box of premium plus 4X6 from my supply shelves to look) are on the bottom end back of the box.  They are directly under their corresponding bar codes; the Product Number (for 4X6 premium plus it's Q1978AC) and what looks like the SKU (on my box, ignoring the small 8 and 5 at either end, that reads 0873654213).  Additionally, there is a "Lot Number" (printed in white dot printing on a gray box background) directly above the product number (which should have "US" in the upper left, and a string below that...mine is US00204805).  There is no number on the back of the paper, just the HP logo and a string of 6 small dots under it in a diagonal pattern spread across it.
So, I expect they want all three; Product Number, SKU, and Lot Number...the last likely so that that can pull a lot sample from their QA inventory and attempt to reproduce the issue back at the lab.
    Hope that helps.

  • Photosmart C410: How do I associate a custom paper size with the photo tray?

Our Photosmart 3310 recently broke down and I purchased a C410 to replace it.  I sell a small item online that I ship in 3 5/8 x 6 1/2 envelopes.  With the 3310, I had figured out a way to print the envelopes from the photo tray.  While Word 2007 allows me to select the photo tray, the printer would not print from there until I created a custom paper size in the printer preferences dialog box.
One of the reasons I got the C410 was for the photo tray.  It's a real pain to have to swap out the regular paper and stick in one evelope every time I want to print another envelope.  Well, unfortunately, that's what I've been doing.  I select the photo tray in Word, but the printer goes right ahead and prints from the main tray.  I had forgotten what I did to make it work on the 3310, so I experimented with that printer's drivers until I figured it out.
My problem is that the software interface for the C410 is different than that for the 3310.  I can't figure out how to associate a custom paper size with the photo tray.  To test my theory this evening, I told Word that my envelope size was 5 x 7.  The printer didn't hesitate to take an envelope from the photo tray.  Of course the return address went into a dark void because the envelope is not 5 x 7.
The difference between the two interfaces is that the 3310 has both printing shortcuts as well as "Print Task Quick Sets."  The C410 only has printing shortcuts.
If anyone can help me, I'll be very grateful!  I've probably spent hours trying to get this figured out, and I have no idea what to do.

    Hi,
Which Microsoft product (application) are you using ? Printer supports the following custom sizes:
From ADF: Custom-sized media (ADF) between 127 to 216 mm wide and 241 to 305 mm long (5 to 8.5 inches wide and 9.5 to 12 inches long)
From input tray: Custom-sized media between 76.2 to 216 mm wide and 101 to 762 mm long (3 to 8.5 inches wide and 4 to 30 inches long)
You need to select right custom size from the application.
    Regards.

  • How do you crop photos?

I have iPhoto version 2. I have printed the instructions in iPhoto Help for cropping photos, but I seem to need more help. Following the 4 steps in the iPhoto Help section, I seem to have isolated the part of the photo that I want to print and e-mail, but what comes next? Now that I have used the Edit button, and the crosshair pointer, and the Crop icon in the Edit pane, what do I do now? I want that part of the photo that I have identified. How do I get it?
iMac DV (Special Edition) Mac OS X (10.3.9)

With the photo viewed in edit mode you draw a
rectangle with the mouse around the part you want to
keep. Then you select crop. Your cropped photo will
then appear in the edit window.A full size photo of
    the area your selected.
    That's it.
Well, while I was waiting for an answer, I finally fumbled, bumbled, and stumbled to a successful conclusion--I hope (I won't know until my friend acknowledges receipt of the picture.
I have to say that in my case it wasn't a matter of "That's it". My first problem was getting the cropped photo by itself. I think that my problem here was that there were just too many EDIT buttons on my screen. I must have used the wrong one the first time I tried. After that there were problems at EVERY step. Also, even though I finally e-mailed the message, I couldn't quite cope with the ENHANCE and CONTRAST buttons. The problem was they seemed to be one-way streets. I mean that after discovering that I had gone too far and that I didn't like the results, I couldn't reverse things. "Undo ENHANCE" didn't do it, nor did another similarly named button. Finally, I found another button that did the trick. I hope that the ENHANCE, BRIGHTEN, CONTRAST, etc. features have been simplified and improved in future versions. I'll soon know when I buy my next Mac. Thanks for your help.

  • How do I change/upload my custom avatar?

How do I change my avatar to the custom one? Not the one from these that are listed by default.

    Hello again, Munas.
Just thought I would try again to follow my own tracks.   Go to Your stuff > Profile > Actions (Change Avatar) > From the selection that appears scroll right down to the bottom of the page.    My page shows a blue lined empty box at the very bottom and words in blue letters ... 'Add another avatar'.   Click on those words.  You will then find an invitation to upload an image (which will eventually be put into the empty blue box).   Regretably I don't have space to go further without losing other images I have saved but try to follow this and see how you progress.   Good luck.
Just crosses my mind.   How long have you been at level 3.   Perhaps the powers that be have not yet noticed and made the custom avatar open to you.

  • How do you add a custom avatar pic for the Apple Support account?

I've noticed some people have their own pics for their avatar, not offered in the pics section when you customize your profile settings. I looked for an option to upload a custom profile pic, but couldn't find it; I only managed to find the option for uploading a profile photo, not a custom avatar pic. Thanks in advance.

The ability to add a custom avatar becomes available once you reach Level 3 (=500 points).

  • Cropping Photos in iPhoto

I have a question about the cropping tool. I know that by clicking on the drop down Constraints menu when in edit menu I can change the constraints of the crop. It seems to me that those constraints are useful if you are actually going to print out the pictures. I rarely print my pictures. I mostly show them to people on the web, on my computer, etc. So, is it possible to crop the photo but keep the same constraints as the original photo? If not, what would be the best constraint to use if I just want use the cropped photo on my computer but not print it out?

There's no best constraint. If you want the picture to have the same aspect ratio as the screen, you should have a ##x## (Display) option in the Constrain pop-up menu.
To preserve the original aspect ratio of the image-there may be an easier way- you could enter the photo's dimensions (as seen in the info panel) into the Custom constrain box.

  • Question about Aperture behavior on cropped photos

    Hello everyone,
If I crop a photo in Aperture 3, and then click on the "Auto level" button, will the "auto level" stuff be applied relatively to the whole photo or only to the cropped photo (just like in Photoshop) ?...

That's not really how I'd want it to work. If you had some portion of a picture you were cropping out precisely because it was, say, so bright white and washed out, and then wanted the rest of the picture to be auto-balanced based on the more appropriate range of shades and colors, you'd want it to be ignoring the part you cropped away. I haven't had a chance to play with that exact scenario though, but if what you say is true, what is the solution to a scenario like that? Round-trip it to PS to really crop away the unwanted part?

  • IPhoto 2 Cropping Photo

I used the help feature on how to crop a photo. I loaded a photo from DVD, selected edit and cropped it. But when I dragged the cropped photo to my desktop so I could upload it more quickly, the photo that shows on my desktop is the original photo, uncropped, which isn't the photo I want to upload. How can I only use the cropped photo I want?

Have you actually opened that file to look at it, or are you making an assessment based on the thumbnail image of the file?
I just cropped a photo and exported it to the desktop like you described, then opened the file in Preview. The actual image was cropped just as intended.

  • PSE8 - Help with Watermarking vs Cropped Photos

I have recently been experimenting with Watermarking, using the "Process Multiple Files" option.  It works great, except for one thing:  when watermarking a photo that has been cropped from its original size, the watermark gets cropped as well. Please see this link for an example of what I mean.
The cropped photos have been saved as separate files from the original, so why is this happening?
Can anyone tell me, a: how to fix it, b: how to keep it from happening in the future, and/or c:, what am I doing wrong???  Please?
    Thanks in advance!
