Mulipe router/switch/hub home setup

Home Network Port Set-Up
My home network is as shown in the figure below:
(Can not attach graphics so I explain:
4 port speedtouch router connects to the ISP.
On this I have hung
x-Canon iP5200R network and wireless printer.
y-AirportExtreme
On the Airport I have hung
a-USB hub with 2 WD MyBook's
b-iMac G5
c-iMac G4 lamp
d-MacBook or Dell Windows laptops as and when I need to transfer large files)
The units connected to the Airport LAN ports cannot see any devices connected to the speedtouch. Originally there was only one 4 port router with built in wireless. After that there was another 4-port router with no wireless. I am therefore 100% certain that the printer have communicated through the Ethernet cable, not wireless.
I have circumvented the problem of not seeing devices on the other switch by just connecting items that should see each other to the same switch. When I got the speedtouch and airport a year ago, I just connected as this and it worked.
Today my daughter try to print and it did not work, error message 306 – check communications with printer.
I find that
1. The test page does print from the Canon IJ Print Utility
2. In the Canon IJ Print Utility both wireless printing AND wired printing is selected
I deselect WL printing, and the printer disappears.
From this I deduce that the printer must have been using the WL printing facility not the cable facility, but that it stopped working today for some reason.
So I have two issues.
1. How do I make the devices on the airport the speedtouch see each other (I guess I must open a port on the airport. This will disable its firewall functionality, but that does matter as the speedtouch has a firewall)
2. Why did the printing stop working – this may not really matter if I can get these to see each other on the network
Thank you for your support

It doesn't allow me to select ethernet as an option for internet connection, only dchp, ppoe and one more which isn't ethernet.
DHCP is correct setting. .it will use ethernet but the new AC TC has problems.. it needs a crossover cable with some switches. Or you need to return it and get it replaced as there is something wrong with its wan port.. the new AC model needs a hardware revision and about 3 or 4 firmware upgrades before it hits the status of the Gen4 it replaced.
My questions are: should I connect my time capsules together directly with ethernet using another available port in my new time capsule. I thought my switch would work better. Also, does one time capsule have to be in router mode instead of having both of them in bridge.
Both should be in bridge.. but you can rearrange things to see if any of the other devices works better.
You can use the billion or the old TC.. plug the new TC into those.
Bob is correct though.. the switch is the correct thing for everything to be plugged into .. but in home situation what works is more important than what is best. It if fails in all of them then the WAN port is proven faulty.
Should I be able to use the hdd on the 2nd (older) time machine as essentially a networked hdd for putting movies and music on, and use my new time capsule as the sole backup (occurring both over ethernet for my iMac and wifi for our laptops)
Yes, that is ok.. you just need to get the AC version TC actually working properly.
Give us a few screenshots of things.. that really helps to see.
Click on each unit and show the summary pages.

  • KEITH BEDDOE - WIRELESS ROUTER TO REPLACE HOME HUB...

Dear Keith - I am new to this site and don't normally subscribe to this type of thing and from reading the forum, you may be the man I need!
Have had my Home Hub 3 for a year now  (not on infinity) and have had enough. I have spent endless hours on phone to BT, switched channels, WPA/WPA2 etc - but this router just will not work consistently with all our devices. (If I take the devices to work, or anyone else's house who doesn't have Home Hub 3, they work fine), further, everything else worked fine on my old Home Hub 2 but the signal strength wasn't enough to make it round my house, thus I changed to Home Hub 3. The devices are all set up to Home Hub 3, but I constantly have to reset it because it keeps losing touch with devices. If I reset then everything is fine but then some devices (normally HP, Blackberry, Kindle and Nintendo DS) will start dropping signal.
I have now decided to invest in another wireless router, I have searched the forum but am unsure if any of the suggested products are suitable, so, can you suggest something?
I connect the router via the phone line (is this ADSL) and wireless everything. We have quite a large house, so it needs to cover a good range, and easy to set up because I am a complete novice at all this. These are the items we run on it (there's alot, we are a big family) .....
    IPhone x 3
    IPad x 1
    IPod x 1
    Blackberry Playbook x 1
    Blackberry Phone x 1
    Nintendo Wii x 1
    XBox x 1
    Nintendo DS x 2
    Kindle x 2
Netgear thing for Sky Anytime x 1 (sorry, can't remember what that gadget is called)
    HP Laptop x 1
    HP PC x 2
    HP Printer x 1
I just want a router that will sit prettily on the table and do it's stuff and that I don't have to keep resetting to get a signal from it....
Thanking you in advance for all your help....

As Bullitt says, there are quite a few choices, but  the TP-Link TD-W8960N 300MBPS Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router is a popular choice.
It does have external aerials, so coverage should be fairly good. Bear in mind that all wifi routers have the same power output, so router placement and aerial quality are important.
Things like PCs and gaming console are best connected using powerline adapters, and not wireless.

  • Modem and Router Switch off

Can I switch off both my Modem and Router at night, previously I was advised to keep my Router switched on 24/7 to maintain my speed, is this still the case with Infinity?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The modem on Infinity holds the connection so i would personally advise you keep the modem plugged in, the router should be fine to switch off overnight.
However, there is also a power save feature on the home hub as well.

  • Looking for router/switch combo equivalent to RV325

    Hello:
I will be working with the RV325 router frequently.
I am hoping to setup a router/switch combo similar to RV325 at home to practice.
However, I do not want to spend $400+ just for that purpose.
I knew that RV320 has a similar GUI of RV325.
    Question:
Is there any other router/switch combo that shares similar GUI and function of RV325 but even cheaper than RV320?
    Thank you.

The snmp-server ifindex persist command only applies to ifIndex values as you have seen.  The indices of the cikePeerTable should be well-defined, but the internal index may change on a tunnel flap.  The MIB documentation doesn't say that it would, but it is certainly possible.  The index structure would look like:
    1."10.1.1.1".1."10.1.1.2".1006
Where 1 is the local type, "10.1.1.1" is the local end IP address, 1 is the remote type, "10.1.1.2" is the remote end IP address, and 1006 is the internal peer index.
The cikeTunnelTable on the other hand uses a unique monotonically increasing index each time a tunnel is created (cikeTunIndex).  You would need to walk the table and pull out the specific tunnel attributes to know if this was the tunnel you want to monitor.
The short answer is that you may need to script the collection of the table rows to dynamically regenerate your NMS configuration to continually monitor the interesting tunnels.

  • New router (switched from Linksys to Netgear 750 - HP J4680 printer all in one - and MAC

My husband puchase a new router - (we were told our old router failed on us) - we had no problems setting up the netgear 750 from the linksys router we originally had - we have a MACBook Pro
My HP printer J4680 - ran beautifully  before the router switch - now will only work when directly connected from MAC to printer.
We have had several people troubleshoot for us -( we live in the country - no IT personnel nearby) - no one can seem to get the connection going between the two devices - I reinstalled the printer - read and reread the troubleshooting manual on both router and printer - and performed all the recommendations listed. The basic setup instructions on the HF printer say that despite the proximity of the printer and the router the signal in only fair and that it appears to have a "security" issue - I turned off the firewall settings on computer - no change in status.
we are contemplating returning the Netgear 750 for another linksys - could someone please tell me how or if we can solve this problem w/o having to return the router?
We purchased this particular router for the MAC compatability - the wireless printer is fairly new <<5yrs old and never had any problems w/it.
IT REALLY APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE I CAN GET!! THANX - maggiemae03815

    Welcome to the forums maggiemae03815
I saw your post about the connection issues you are having with your new router, Mac computer and Officejet J4680. I understand you have done some troubleshooting already however, I have a suggestion or two for you to try.
    On your Mac, try:
Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
    Repair disk permissions
    Restart the Mac
Re-add the printer (do not use the AirPrint driver)
    Test print
Next contact the router company or your internet service provider to check the settings on your new router. There may be a setting that is blocking the connection to your printer:
Network name and password need to have no spaces or punctuation
If using WPA2 security, switch to WPA personal
Dual broadcast Wireless b/g/n (printer will only connect to g)
Mac filter needs to be turned off
Firewall settings need to be at there default settings, or set to a lower security
    Multicasting "on"
Following ports need to be un-blocked:
    Incoming (UDP) ports : 137, 138, 161, 427
    Outgoing (TCP) ports : 137, 139, 427, 9100, 9220, 9500
I hope my post was informational!

  • I can't connect to the router in my home.  Things were working fine as usual - I attended school and connected to their WiFi network as usual.  When I returned home I could not connect to my own home router.  The Ipad seeks the network but nothing happens

I can't connect to the router in my home.  The Ipad seeks the network but nothing happens.  I went to school and connected to their WiFi network as usual with no problems.  When I returned home I could not connect to my home router.  The Ipad seeks the router number but nothing happens.  I rebooted the Ipad a few times in the school.  The numbers identifying the router, etc. on my Ipad no longer appear there.
TThe Ipad guide says to connect to the WiFi use setup but I can't find the setup program in the Ipad.
I reset the network settings to the factory defaults but this doesn't fix the problem.
What can I do to reconnect to my home router?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • How to use a Westell 7500 as a router-switch ?

I have an extra Verizon Westell 7500 DSL modem router (A90-750015-07). How do I turn it into a router-switch that will take an ethernet (not DSL) network feed (with internet access) and distribute it among a few devices and put those devices into some kind of sub-network so they see each other? I'm not using technical terms here - please teach me.
My wife is going to rent a small temporary office that provides internet access via a socket in the wall. Let's assume it's a typical RJ-45 ethernet socket. The internet speed might actually be pretty good - maybe 30Mbs down and very fast up. The total internet capacity is shared with other temporary offices in the facility, but let's assume we'll have enough for our needs.
If the only thing I bring is a single computer, I could use a J-45 ethernet cable to plug its network card directly into this socket and be done. But I'll be bringing at least two computers and a small printer/scanner. Both computers will need to share the internet access, and both computers and the printer/scanner will need to "see" each other. (Just like at home.)
So, if I plug the extra Westell 7500 into the network wall socket and then my PCs and printer into the Westell, I should get what I need here, yes? How do I do this exactly, step-by-step?
I have experimented at home and have maybe 10% success. At home, I don't have an ethernet socket in the wall, but I do have my current (not Westell) modem-router, and it has an unused LAN socket, which I am pretending is the office's ethernet socket. I connected a test computer to the Westell 7500 and logged onto the Westell 7500's embedded server (192.168.1.1), changed its VersaPort from "LAN ethernet port" to "WAN uplink port", connected the newer modem-router's unused LAN socket to the Westell 7500's E1/Uplink socket with a J45 cable, went to the Westell 7500's "Advanced" page and ran "Detect WAN Configuration". That changed the Westell 7500's "WAN uplink port Settings Protocal" from PPPoE to Routed IP. The Westell 7500 now also says its "Broadband Connection Type" is "Routed Bridge".
The test computer connected to the Westell 7500 shows it is connected to the Westell 7500, but it cannot connect all the way through to the internet. At the start, the newer modem-router shows the Westell is connected to it, and the newer modem-router has given the Westell a DHCP address of 192.168.1.5. But after a few minutes, the newer modem-router doesn't show the Westell any more. If I re-run Detect WAN Configuration on the Westell 7500, it says "Automatic Protocol Detecion is in progress" but then "DHCP server was found ... PPPoE server not found", and then the newer modem-router shows the Westell 7500 again as 192.168.1.5. But the test computer does not have internet access.
What exactly should I do with the additional settings in the Westell 7500 to make this work?
If there's a great web site to explain this to me, please point me there.
    Thanks.

  • Airport extreme won't work without router/switch

    Hi all,
I'm a bit dumbfounded here and am hoping you can give me some answers.  I've been having connectivity issues, specifically with random pages not loading while on wifi (all devices).  They work just fine on my iPhone through LTE so I decided to try and isolate the issue to what hardware was causing my issues.
    Previous setup:
Cisco DPQ3212 VOIP modem -> wired to legrand 10/100 router/switch (wired only) -> wired to Airport Extreme -> Airport Express (set to extend range).
I decided to try and eliminate the router/switch and start from scratch using only the modem and Extreme since that's the simplest setup.
I reset the Extreme to factory settings and unplugged it.  Then I turned off the Modem (pulled power, etc.).  I let both sit for a while to forget anything they may have been remembering.  I then connected the ethernet, plugged in the modem, waited for it to get situated, and then plugged in the Extreme.  Setup went fine, but I got 'no internet' and 'no dns' errors.  Those went away randomly but the ip address I got was 169.xxx... so something was obviously was amiss.
I decided to go even simpler.  Connected iMac directly to modem, reset the modem and voila, I had working internet.  Thinking I did something wrong, I reset everything again and tried the Extreme setup.  Same issue with connectivity.  No internet and a bad IP.  Tried the same thing with the Express and got the same errors, etc.  Tried switching DHCP & Nat, Bridge Mode, you name it, nothing seemed to work.  Airport utility shows green for the Airport but amber for the internet.
So I gave up.  I connected the wired router/switch back up, reset everything, and it works again without a hiccup.
    Summary:
    1.  Internet works when modem is connected directly to iMac.
    2.  Internet works fine connected wirelessly through Extreme (or Express) wired to the router/switch wired to modem.
    3.  Internet will NOT work when modem connected directly to Extreme or Express, despite factory resets.
So help me out... how can this possibly be happening????

Sorry for the super slow response.  Shortly after posting the question my wife had a baby so I've been a bit preoccupied!
    I'm using the following:
    Airport Extreme:  5th Generation A1408 (version 7.6.4)
Airport Express:  Current generation A1392 (version 7.6.4)
    (if it matters) Legrand 10/100 4 port Router/Switch (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CB8QFjAA&url =http%3A%2F%2Fwww.legrand.us%2F~%2Fmedia%2FE0E9D84B8E4E4F0EAF6DE2577C23AD7F.ashx &ei=x0rEU8aMHcnjoAT3qYCgBw&usg=AFQjCNGDfOvPP4Dd9k1Xx6FVDkNJi0DOrw&bvm=bv.7081008 1,d.cGU)
I don't have access to a plain switch or crossover cable unfortunately.
And yep, I'm using the WAN port.  I get a green light every once in a while, but it really just doesn't work unless I add the other router back in there.
I have been taking the battery out and letting it rest for 30 mins each time.
FWIW, I'm doing all of this due to webpages not loading correctly.  I did a trace route to discussions.apple.com and the results show something is obviously amiss.  Here's what it says:

  • Router/Switcher for G4/XP netwoork

Pardon my ignorance but I need to connect my G4 iMac with an XP box in a room directly below. I previously had a small D-Link router that burned up but I could only share internet, no files desoite file sharing being turned on. Is there a recomendation? Should I get a router/switcher, just a switch or an ethernet hub?
    Appreciate the advice. Thanks!
    D
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi Dennis:
A switch or hub will allow you to share files between each other on a LAN. A Router will allow you to connect your LAN to a WAN (Generally, an ISP such as cable or DSL).
If you are connecting your machines to the internet, I would recommend a Router. It offers NAT routing which is one of your best firewalls that can be used from the internet.
Any router can be used as a switch as well.
Bottom line, I'd recommend going for a wireless router, that way it will offer you the option of "Growing" into your new network device. They are generally inexpensive and can find one for around $60 or so. (The Linksys WRT54G works well)

  • Can I add a second wired / wireless router in my home by connecting to another FiOS coax outlet?

Can I add a second router in my home by connecting to another FiOS coax outlet?
My existing, Verizon supplied, router is connected to a cable coax outlet on one side of the house and works fine.  With all the new A/V equipment coming out these days, I'd like to be able to network them.  So what I'd lke to do is put a splitter before my FiOS HD DVR receiver and connect another router right there for my TV, BLU Ray, Receiver, XBOX, etc.
Any tips, comments, or suggestions appreciated.
    Solved!

Don't want to do that ... while the refrigerator talking to the dryer has had the interesting side effect of automatically tossing my salads, my washer now insists on feeding my clothes to the ice maker which makes for either shredded or frozen clothes depending on the setting.  I can only imagine what would have happened if they networked my coffee maker and toaster as well!

I have ssh2 enabled on a cisco3750 & 7204 running IOS 12.2 & 12.4 respectively both with "ip scp server enable" configured, the idea being to sftp configs & IOS down to them. I can open a V2 ssh session to each device no problem. When I attempt to use an sftp client (Putty/SecureFX) to do the file transfer the router/switch appears to authenticate OK but then the session is disconnected. I have logging & ssh/scp debug enabled on each cisco box and attempt to open the sftp connection. In each case the authentication (using same credentials as for SSH2 session) is successful but then the connection just closes. Can anyone help?

They don't make it real clear, but what you actually do is source from the router/switch. From the router/switch, you connect to a server that supports SCP and pull the IOS down or push the config to the server. You use the normal copy commands, but specify scp instead of tftp or ftp.
    Hope that helps.

  • Internal Mail Routing Between HUB servers Is Not Working Correctly

Howdy, Been scratching my head on this one for a while.
First off, running Exchange 2010 Sp3 RU5 across the board.
I have attached a diagram of our environment for visual aid. Please take a look as it makes more sense.
I have drawn the correct mail flow in black and what is happening in red.
Forest A Site A, has a dedicated edge, dedicated Hub and dedicated CAS
    Forest A Site A child domain 1, has a multi-roled MBX,HUB,CAS
    Forest A Site B child domain 2, has a multi-roled MBX,HUB,CAS
    Forest B Site C, has a multi-roled MBX,HUB,CAS
Mail flows TO child domain 2 just fine, but outgoing mail from that same domain keeps routing through HUB in child domain 1 instead of HUB in forest root domain.
The send connector for the organization in Forest A is configured to only send through the dedicated HUB server in Forest A. The Receive connector in Forest A's HUB is also configured correctly. But no matter what i do, mail outgoing from child domain
2 continues to flow to child domain 1 instead of through the dedicated HUB server.
Mail needs to flow so for now i added the HUB in child domain 1 as a source server in the organization's send connector and set up the receive connector in child domain 1 to allow a work around for now.
I think this is an issue in the routing group connector but its just a guess. Any ideas?

    Hi,
Active Directory IP site links costs are based on relative network speed compared to all network connections in the WAN and are designed to produce a reliable and efficient replication topology. Therefore, in most cases, the existing IP site link costs should
work well for Exchange 2010 message routing. However, if after documenting the existing Active Directory site and IP site link topology, you verify that the Active Directory IP site link costs and traffic flow patterns aren't optimal for Exchange 2010, you
can make adjustments to the costs evaluated by Exchange.
You can use the Set-AdSiteLink cmdlet to assign an Exchange-specific cost to an Active Directory IP site link.
More details refer to the following articles:
    Controlling IP Site Link Costs
    Set-AdSiteLink
    Hope this helps!
    Thanks.

  • WRT54GX4 - Difficulties Accessing the Router's Web-Based Setup Page

    WRT54GX4 - Difficulties Accessing the Router's Web-Based Setup Page.
I have tried everything posted to the forums and the Knowledge Base for several weeks now with no luck.  I can power push router and gain access to router's web-base interface but only for a few minutes than it quits loading part way through and or does not load at all.  If I turn off the wireless side I can access the router at will with no problems. My warranty is almost over. I am at my wits end. I would like to get it replaced under warranty if I can. (^8
    Solved!

Thank you for your recommendations peanuts. (^8
I bought the router back in December 10, 2006.
I updated the firmware to v1.00.20 back in June 2007. After I did a successful firmware upgrade I reset the router to factory default settings and then reconfigured it. It has worked Ok till a couple of months ago.
I have read everything I can find here on the support forum and in the Knowledge Base several times.
I have tried changing all the different settings to the different recommendations posted here and in Knowledge Base with no success. Each time I would do a long reset back to factory defaults, let it soak for a few hours and then make one change at a time and let it soak.
I have been monitoring 6 other wireless AP(s) around me (none mine) for a couple of months too. None of them are strong enough to connect to. My SSID is different from them. I have tried all the channels. My router is passworded and MAC'd.
It is looking like it is time to call support and try to get a replacement under warranty while it is still in affect.

  • Error in router's web-based setup page (WRT54G V5)

    Hi,
My router’s web-based setup page is unable to load fully.
There seems to be an error with some document.setup.save file.
I have tried to reset my router but the router’s web-based setup page is still unable to load fully.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

Try Internet Explorer, it usually works.
    JavaScript must be enabled.
Temporarily turn off your computer's software firewall, and see if that corrects your problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Recommendations for an HDMI switch/hub for Apple TV 2012

This seems to be a sticky issue - and probably made worse by the release of the new Apple TV (March 2012) edition with 1080p.
I want to buy an HDMI switch/hub so I can plug three devices (Laptop/XBox 360/AppleTV) into my one free HDMI port - so I don't have to keep unplugging/re-plugging cables in.
I did some searching, and found a number of highly recommended HDMI switches/hubs including the Portta 3to1 switch (990 4+ star reviews), the Kinivo 5 port switch (267 4.5+ star reviews) and more.
However the naysayers in the reviews frequently comment on incompatibility / 'always on' behavior with Apple TV.
Having looked around the community here - it looks like the MonoPrice 5x1 switch used to be the favorite recommendation - but unless I'm reading the manufacturers specifications wrong - it doesn't support 1080p.
All I want is a decent quality switch that won't keep auto-switching to the wrong device.  I'm completely happy (and maybe, if the always on stories are true) if the switch has NO auto-switch capability and just has a remote or physical button.
    Thanks
    Adam

Thanks for the quick response Jon.  Hmm.  Your right, I tracked down the newest version of the device on monoprice.com and it does support 1080p and 3D.   I read several reviews that suggested otherwise - but must have been referring to an old model.  (One was on cnet.com)   There were other people in the community talking about 1080p issues as well.  Looks like the new model is called MonoPrice 5x1 Enhanced.

I'll order one and see how it goes.
    Thanks
