Mulitple partition, one for Bootcamp to play PC Games?

Hi everyone,
I have a thought, I play PC games with my sons, and also still like windows xp, what I have been using is boot camp, but I find myself there all the time, and as of today my MAC is still in repair, so I have been thinking that maybe I can take one partition to play games in BC, and another so that I can run Leopard and VM, to utilize the best of both worlds, I miss my MAC applications but also have a lot of Windows items as well...can I do this? Any ideas.
Why I have stayed with BC thus far, after trying Paralles is that the drivers do not work with the games and losing half my ram....like the concept but not the execution, reading about VM and wondered if that will give me more of what I am looking for...THX in advance.

I'm not sure of what "BC" is but...
You can set up one partition for Windows, Boot Camp will do it for you, so you don't need to reformat anything.
Also, new software often allows you to use the Boot Camp Partition as your Windows file, so you don't have two copies. I suggest you look on the site (Parallels or Fusion) to check out their features.
This way you can boot into Windows for your games (with little, if at all any, loss of CPU, RAM, et cetera) and into your Mac for your Mac applications. Also, if you are on OS X and want to run a windows program, you can do so through the program without having to boot into Windows. It'll mean slowing down your Windows programs, but it's fine for programs (not games).
Lastly, just a little tip, Mac is a Macintosh computer, MAC is a Media Access Controller. They are both computer terms and you don't want to get them confused. XD.

  • How do I create 2 Recovery partitions: one for Lion and one for Mountain Lion?

Well that is basically the question:
How do I create 2 recovery partitions: one for Lion and one for Mountain Lion?
Reason is that I would like to keep the option to return to Lion, or even better, have a seperate partition for eacht?

can I access my programs from the other partition, so I can save space ...
No, as far as I know, each one is completely separate - especially if you're dealing with two different versions of OS's.
is it possible to safely make an extra partion on a running drive (it is my main computer ...) The disk is large enough ...
how large would this have to be
I've personally never done it on a running drive - have read it's possible, but don't want to suggest it since I've never done it and wouldn't be sure about the steps. This is how I got to two partitions on my iMac:
Originally, I had just one partition with Snow Leopard. I used CCC to clone that to an external drive. Booted into that drive and used DU to partition and erase the internal. I then cloned the new clone back. Also cloned the same thing to the other partition which I then upgraded to Lion. So I had two OS's - SL and Lion. I've now decided to clone my SL to an external drive for occasional use and installed ML on that partition - so now I have Lion and ML.
There are two ways to get a "fresh" install: either download the OS again and install it on a partition of your choice or, as I've done as well, copy the installer to a safe place so you don't need to download it again. It does include whatever apps/software is included in the OS.  I've designated two smaller partitions on externals as my "fresh" installs of both Lion and ML for emergency or reinstall purposes (this is my way of dealing with not having install DVDs) - I took the time to install it there and then slowly add fresh installs of my important apps (either via download or install CD) - don't bother with the little/less used stuff, a current copy of that can be downloaded if and when I need it. I don't really update those two - that can also be done if/when I need it since that'll always change.
So, yesterday, I decided I wanted to start fresh with ML - booted into my fresh install of Lion (on external), wiped the SL partition on my internal and installed Lion. Decided to download a fresh copy of the ML installer and installed that. Then ran Software Update. After that, repaired permissions. Then I methodically opened every third party app and checked for updates - installed those where necessary. After all that, I simply copied (drag 'n drop) my entire Documents folder (which contains all my important data,, photos, etc) over from another backup.
This took a while, but mostly because of the long download times; the installs weren't all that bad. I should be running a really clean system now, especially since nothing was ported over except my Documents folder.

  • Partitioning Mac for Bootcamp Without Reformatting HDD

Hello, I hope this is the correct area to start this discussion.
I'm trying to figure out how I can install windows via boot camp, without reformatting my HDD (or use of installation CD).
I'm currently on tour around the U.S., and my installation disks are at my home address.
As a roady photographer, access to my computer and Photoshop is essential to me, and its very important that i can continue to use my mac pro through out the remainder of this year, it is how I make most of my living wile out on tour, so I hope this explains how important it is that i do this right the first time.
Its kind of overwhelming, and I don't know where to start.
I am Tech savvy, but not qualified, my experience has been the above average consumer working around tech problems since AOL launched, so I will try my best to explain what I can, and understand what anyone here try's to offer.
First off, here are my specs:
Processor  2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
    Reason for Boot camp:
I work with Final Cut, Photoshop, Adobe Aftereffects, and a few other heavy duty programs, I'm an Artist and love working with Music and Media.
Some may say that my specs can handle all this, but if it where up to me I would rather have a Tower, but traveling on the road limits me to using the Pro.
On my free time im an avid gamer, At first I was ok with apps, later on I wanted to play some old games like LOTR Battle for Middle Earth, I know my laptop was good enough to play, but I had to get windows so it would be compatible.
I have Parallels 7 from my work, and a copy of Windows 7, and i was able to create a virtual machine to play some PC games.
All was fine until I got into bigger games like ARMA2,
It felt like my laptop was going to die from parallels, so i decided to install Windows on bootcamp because i use it very often. (best of both worlds)
Because of the  programs i use on OS, i don't want my computer to Run a virtual machine anymore, i feel like its very unhealthy.
I want my OS to run full power flawlessly without the stress of virtual machine, and i want Windows to run full power flawlessly without stressing out OS,
so I am going to use Boot Camp.
    How i will go about:
I Have Decided i will attempt to Clone my mac to my External Hard drive.
I have an External 2T Lacie Drive that has lots of space.
Can someone explain to me in light detail how cloning works when you try to reformat your mac off an external Hard drive?
From what i understand you can do it this way.
Also, If i can manage to Clone my mac to my ExHD, will i be able to partition my hard drive for windows, and Re clone my mac back onto one of the partitions?
If this process will work, what steps should i take first?
    Clone, then Boot camp?
can i partition my hard drive, add my Mac back onto a partition, then add Windows CD at a Later time? (i dont have the CD on me atm)
i apologize for the length of this post. Its very important that I can continue to access everything on my laptop, i wont be able to have my installation CDs until this October.
    Thank you.

    you are fine.
Upgrades from 10.6 to Lion with existing XP or Vista present was/is/can be an issue.
Lion 10.7.0 and Boot Camp 4.0.0 were not working (why? oh, "never use dot zero?)
    Lion adds Recovery Partition.
CCC now can clone that partition as well as your HFS volumes.
Lack of contiguous free (unfragmented) storage, with no "locked" files or that fragment the free space.
Shrinking the HFS volume and then stretch it back out to consolidate to get around the free space issue.
Not realizing just how large to make Windows volume (double best estimate rule) or aim for 60GB.
XP only needed 10-16GB or 32GB at top usually. Microsoft and Apple have this "16GB for 32-bit Windows 7" is the OS size, not the size of the partition needed to function (20GB for the base OS for 64-bit).
Add in page, hibernation, temp, cache, and that 10GB just for 'shuffle" files around during updates.
SSDs need space to allow for good background garbage collection and TRIM (a month's worth of writes is a good rule there).
Not documented: you need to get the audio driver on your own along with current graphic driver after you install the OS and Apple drivers.
"Boot Camp" is overused, misused, treated as if people are running BC instead of just running Winidows natively, with all that entails.
Apple Software Update for Windows will update everything except Boot Camp drivers, whereas it could update itself like it has in the past, and could have been the avenue for getting all the drivers into Windows itself.

  • I Need three Partitions, One for 10.5, One for 10.6, One for ehhhh Windows

So have development responsibilities, and then other stuff that i need windows for, well i took my 200 gig primary partitioned it 30 gig and put a developer os on it, and then i get to running bootcamp assistant and it tells me that i cant have my primary partitioned to run BCA. There is NO workaround for that. But im just wondering if I could Have no partitions, then run BCA, and then partition the OS X partition for the other OS.
If anyone has done this let me know if it has or has not worked for you. Im kinda thinking that it wont but i dont want to erase the extra os knowing that it wont.
    Thanks in advance

You can triple boot. See rEFIt for the software for triple boot bootloader. You likely don't need Bootcam assistant. I read somewhere that you go to fdisk and set the windows partitition you want as active then reboot and install Windows.

  • Has anyone used bootcamp to play PC games? If so, do the games run well and without lag?

I want to use bootcamp to install windows on my Macbook Pro (Early 2011). It runs Mac games well but I am afraid it will slow down my computer once I install Windows 7.

Won't slow your Mac down if you use Bootcamp, Windows installs on a partition on the slower 50% of the boot hard drive from the bottom up, however that shouldn't affect PC game performance all that much, only when loading data it might not be as fast as it can be. Likely hardly noticable really.
OS X might feel a bit more snappy as it loads from the faster top 50% of the boot drive.
If you have a SSD then it doesn't matter about the drive performance.
Outside of that Windows will run on the CPU and dedicated video card just about the same, as since OS X and Windows are in seperate parittons they boot seperatly and thus have full control of the hardware.
Now if you also install virtual machine software like Parallels or VMFusion that can copy the BootCamp partiton to use Windows in a window in OS X, and you run other programs in OS X and Windows/programs at the same time, that could slow down your Mac as it's running two operating systems and several programs at the same time.
A powerful Mac, a recent 15" or better should have no problem, as long as there is 4GB of RAM or more. However for best 3D game performance it's better to direct boot into Bootcamp to let Window shave full hardware control and Direct X drives.
Virtual machine software uses the OS X OpenGl drivers, so any program in there will have to use Open GL drivers.
The 13" is better off using Bootcamp and direct booting, it won't be good at games anyway as it doesn't have a more powerful dedicated video card.
Ideally Windows 3D games should be played on a dedicated Windows 3D gaming tower, this way the video cards can be exchanged for newer ones which on the Mac you can't.
If you intent ot Windows #3D game, go that route and don't bother with gaming on a Mac as you can't upgrade the hardware. (or get video cards for the MacPro if sticks around, it hasn't been updated in ages)

why does pointer become a pinwheel when I open one particular folder only and prevent me from opening the apps in it and then keep me from closing the folder unless I shut down the computer completely.  I can open all other folders on the desk top without a problem.  My game folder never gave me trouble before.

Try this. Open one of your files. The window that contains your picture is named at the top. Command click on the name and you'll see the entire path starting with its name and then moving to the folder, the folder it is contained in, etc all the way to down to the hard drive volume name. This should tell you where to find the folder.

  • Recommended partition layout for Ubuntu/Arch dual boot?

I just got a new (old) laptop, and my plan is to dual-boot Arch and Xubuntu. The Xubuntu is mostly to hold me over so I have a stable system while I'm setting Arch up/if I mess up Arch somehow/for testing. It has a new 160GB (149.05 GiB) drive, and my plan is to allocate roughly 35 GiB each for the Xubuntu and Arch / partitions, and a roughly 80 GiB partition for common data (that is, most of my home directory folders will be symlinks to that partition - e.g. ~/code will link to /common/code*).
Right now, my plan is to have three logical partitions - one for Xubuntu, one for Arch, and one that contains the common and swap partitions. So, I'm asking (A) are there any better ideas for partitioning, (B) does Arch still need a /boot partition, and (C) how should I handle the bootloader situation? (i.e. should I install Xubuntu's to the MBR and have it chainload to Arch's on a separate partition, or what?)
*The reason I'm not using a common /home partition is because my config files and the like will probably be different between the two OSes.

    A) Probably -- partitioning is always a relative subject
    B) no...and it never did
    C) Whatever you prefer.
    Basic tips :
Having a separate /home helps in re-installing(if you ever have to) and it saves your config files.
Having a separate /var allows you to put a different filesystem on it which may be more suitable to the type of files in /var
You can use a separate /boot, if you are going to use the same /boot for both Xubuntu and Arch. That way 1 partition handles both. If not, I think there is no need to create a separate partition. If you do create one and plan to use it for Xubuntu and Arch, make sure that you install a filesystem that is acceptable to both distros. For eg. Arch grub is patched so it can read from ext4. I do not know if Xubuntu's grub is patched or not.

  • Partition fail for new SSD

    My old HD crashed on my MacBook Pro (mid 2009) a few days ago. Took it to the Apple store and they told me to buy a new one and put it in. I've done this before, wasn't as complicated the first time around. I bought a Seagate 240gb SSD (so I don't have a moving parts malfunction again) and replaced my old HD. When I try and boot from any source, my latest Time Machine backup (10.7.5), the Max OS X Install Disk (10.5.7), or any of the steps I have found online I cannot get it to work. So I have tried to 'format' the HD by going to Disk Utility and trying to Partition the drive. When doing this on the computer through the Install Disk I get an error that says that the "input/output error". Bummer, I don't know what that means. Then I tried to do it as a Target Disc from another Mac and the Partition fail for that said 'partition failed to write to write to the last block'. I'm stuck at this point. I have no idea what to do, all I want to do is get OS X on my computer. I don't care about data at this point, I just want to load a fresh start. Any help would be great. Below are some of the details from my computer that I can remember (since I can't look them up anymore);
MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2009; Intel2 Core duo)
    8GB RAM
    240GB Seagate SSD HD

if you don't want to run in any errors, just set up win7 first . it creates a 100mb (boot?) partition, one for the system and around 1MB free space (don't ask me why).
grub itself doesn't recognizes the windows installation but its easy to edit the file. i think you just have to change the partition that it directs to window's boot partition (/dev/sda1 in my case)
    mine is looking like this:
    ## (2) Windows
    menuentry "Windows" {                                                                                                                                     set root=(hd0,1)

  • Partition scheme for new 64b dual boot Arch/Win7

    Hi,
I'm about to install those 2 OSs on a new PC.
I plan to use PMagic to partition the disk, then install Win 7 (ult 64b) and finally-Arch 64b.
I've read that Win7 actually uses TWO partitions a (relative small) boot partition and a "main" partition.
    My questions:
    1. While using PMagic to prepare my HD, should I prepare ONE or TWO NTFS partitions for Win 7?
    2. If 2, what size should the Win 7 boot partition be (I've thought about 50 MB)?
    3. If 2, How can I "tell" Win 7 during install to use those two existing partitions rather than creating a new win-boot partition?
    4. Will GRUB recognize both OSs in case of 2 Win partitions?
    Thanks

  • Keyboard glitches while playing Racing games.

Hey guys i have a Hp pavillion dv6 3050tx notebook with ATI radeon 5650 1 gb mobility graphics stock driver, i7 920 4gb ddr3, i have a very unusual problem with all racing games including Gta 4 and Dirt 2, whenever i try to play games with the laptop's keyboard the game freezes after every 2  seconds vice versa while turning the car with A or D buttons or left right it seems to me that i have some problem regarding my button configuration and i have configured it agian but the problem never ends, one day i have played those games with my xbox 360 controller for pc with the controller the gameplay was working fine with no glitches i m confused why playing with the laptop's keyboard or any other external keyboard creating this problem...
please guys suggest me how to tackle this unusual problem.

It's quite normal of the Mac laptops in general. If you do graphic intensive things then they heat up. This is mostly caused just by the aluminum which usually easily heats up and the lack of a fan outlet (place to blow air out of the computer).
This happens to me as well playing even more simple games or using video editing applications.
Trust me it is quite normal for the macs, its a sacrifice for design.

  • What is a bootable backup and do i need one? what are partitions good for?

    hello,
    please excuse my ignorance...
i just got a new lacie external firewire hard drive and it has some software which i was wandering if i have any use for... - SilverKeeper and LaCie Backup Software. i'm not sure if they can give me anything that time machine doesn't do better... SilverKeeper gives the option of cloning a bootable backup. i'm not exactly sure what's the advantage of this and in what case i may need it.
when i got my last computer i was able to transfer everything from the old computer, including applications, to the new one without having to find all the serial numbers and reinstall them. i thought that time machine will be able to do the same thing if i lose all the data on my computer. is that not so? is that what a bootable clone is for? or what is it for?...
my other question is what are the advantages of making partitions in my new drive (i understand i have to if i want a bootable backup, but is there any reason to partition otherwise?
    thanks!
    dannah

SilverKeeper gives the option of cloning a bootable backup. i'm not exactly sure what's the advantage of this and in what case i may need it.
A bootable backup is an exact copy of your hard drive's contents on another drive, that can be used for booting up the machine. The advantage of a bootable backup is that, in the event something bad happens to your internal drive, you can very quickly get up and running with the backup drive, and can copy that back to a replaced/fixed internal drive very quickly. Time Machine backups are not bootable.
The disadvantage of a clone of any kind, bootable or not, is that there's only one version of any particular file stored. So if a file gets damaged and then backed up, you're pretty well screwed with the clone, while Time Machine stores many versions of the file, so you just "roll back" to the last working copy.
when i got my last computer i was able to transfer everything from the old computer, including applications, to the new one without having to find all the serial numbers and reinstall them.
Bad idea... while this will work for most apps, different machines have different architectures, so some apps may not be installed correctly for the new machine, plus you may not have properly copied some components. You should have reinstalled them.
i thought that time machine will be able to do the same thing if i lose all the data on my computer. is that not so?
If you have Time Machine back up the entire hard drive, without excluding anything, then Time Machine should be able to restore your drive to exactly the way it was at any particular moment in time at which it made a backup, including apps, system files, preferences, etc.
my other question is what are the advantages of making partitions in my new drive (i understand i have to if i want a bootable backup, but is there any reason to partition otherwise?
You do not have to partition to make a bootable backup. However, you'll be using the entire drive... trying to store additional files on the same drive as a bootable clone is confusing at best. Using a partition allows you to create multiple "virtual" drives... say, one for a bootable backup, one for a Time Machine backup, one for movie files, etc. Of course, this is only advisable if the drive is much larger than the one you're backing up, and note that if you store original files on a partition (like a bunch of movie files), you need a backup of those somewhere else.
Time Machine will want it's own full drive or partition to play with, which should be larger than the drive being backed up, and will eventually fill it. A bootable clone probably also should go onto its own partition, but you wouldn't need to make this partition larger than the drive being cloned. Other than that, don't worry about partitioning unless you have a specific need.

There probably is, but it requires that you be able to use punctuation and write in sentences so that we can understand exactly what you want.
You can block others from using your Apple ID by changing your password.  There is no way to erase what was already downloaded on to someone else's device, for obvious reasons,

  • Can I force the bootcamp wizard to skip looking for the bootcamp drivers?  I have already downloaded the latest drivers and loaded them on a FAT usb drive.  All I want is for bootcamp to create the partition and allow me to install windows 8 pro

    Hi Everyone,
Can I force the bootcamp wizard to skip looking for the bootcamp drivers?  I have already downloaded the latest drivers and loaded them on a FAT usb drive.  All I want is for bootcamp to create the partition and allow me to install windows 8 pro.
The bootcamp drivers have been downloaded from apple's website.  Filename:  BootCamp5.0.5033
    I have a iMac 27" late 2013 model.
NOTE:  I have downloaded the drivers manually from apples support site as the bootcamp wizard fails third of the way through the download.
    Appreciate any assistance.
    Regards,
    asdutoit

There is a missing point in this thread, and it is that the Boot Camp drivers for the Late 2013 iMac can only be downloaded from Boot Camp Assistant. The Boot Camp drivers available in the Apple site are not compatible with that iMac.
Delete the Boot Camp drivers from the USB drive, open Boot Camp Assistant and try to download the Boot Camp drivers again. If you get a message telling you that they could not be downloaded, I would try reinstalling OS X through OS X Recovery, by holding down Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up
