Multi-bay enclosures w Mavericks

Hello,
At first, thinking that a Mac would not be able to read anything plugged into it seemed ridiculous, yet, I have seen reviews for some multi-bay enclosures that say they have stopped working after upgrading to Mavericks, posted as recent as yesterday.
I was hoping for a recommendation for a quality, at least 4 to 6-bay 3.5 SATA enclosure, for 5TB minimum, USB3, Firewire or eSATA connection (plan on using thunderbolt adapter), RAID not necessary its a JBOD but it will house my Time Machine drive so reliablility is a must!
Sometimes, it's hard to find the right third-party accessory to use for a Mac. I was hoping people here would have some advice on this. Am I even approaching it properly? The discs are the four from my old Mac Pro to hook up to the new one. And, it is possible that one of the discs is a Seagate green disc (its been so long I can't remember). I saw where that makes a difference too. But, if it has everything but can't handle that, then I will move the data to a new one. Currently, they are only available via the old Mac Pro thru an ethernet.
Thanks for the help! Have a great day!!
Lisa Rose

I have two Burly multi drive enclosures conected via a Thunderbolt conversion. Make sure your Esata supports port multipliers.
These guys are very knowledgeable and the service is excellent.

  • Looking for Multi-Bay IDE Drive Enclosure

I currently have this AMS Venus T4U 4-bay IDE enclosure connected to my AEBS. It works fine, but I just noticed that the fan is not working. I'm not sure how important this is, since the fan can be turned on or off with a button on the front of the enclosure. But I'm guessing that no fan with 4 hard drives is not a good thing. So I think I should replace it, but I can't find this enclosure anywhere. Nor can I find any other multi-bay IDE enclosures. It would appear no one makes IDE enclosures anymore, at least not multi-bay ones. And I have all these 250 & 300 GB IDE drives that I can no longer use in any of my computers.
Any suggestions? Know of anyone that still makes multi-bay IDE enclosures? Or should I just not worry about having no fan in my enclosure? Or should I just bite the bullet and get a few SATA drives and a new enclosure? If so, any recommendations for an enclosure that works with the AEBS?

I did see a few on CompUSA but you would have to qualify them for the type of SATA (IDE) drives you have in your current enclosure. You may have better luck parting out the power supply and fan assembly. I certainly would not run without airflow.
Now you could rig a fan -- just a fan on the inside or outside to force air through. Get a "Y" adapter you would use to power a disk (if your enclosure is suitably supplied) and run the fan off of that. Mount it inside or outside the case as you need (depending on how much room you have to work with inside) and make your own "Frankenclosure."
But you are correct. Everyone is going to SATA. I would imagine you may have problems replacing the drives pretty soon. And, since SATA has higher limits on drive sizes, you may be much better off.

  • External multi disk enclosure

I am looking for suggestions of finding an external multi disc enclosure for my itunes library as the library is approaching 2 teribytes. I would like the drive too have both thunder bolt and usb 3 connections as i will be upgradeing my 2008 mac pro if apple puts out a new one this year. Should i use ssd or sata drives?

An SSD system that large will be very expensive, so you're probably going to have to go with SATA. You really don't need SSD performance for an iTunes library in any case. I've been quite satisfied with the drives from Other World Computing and from G Technology, but there are a number of good drive brands available.

  • PCI Card & 4 bay enclosure not showing up on MacPro

I have a pre-09 MacPro and a WiebeTech RTX400H-SV bay enclosure which connects via eSata. Before today I had no problem using drives in any of the 4 bays. But today I started it up and it wouldn't come on the desktop. I checked for it ref Drive Utility in case it just needed to be mounted, and it didn't show up [I had 2 drives in the enclosure just in case]. Then I checked the System Info and it says that I have a PCI card in Slot 3 [it's a 2 slot eSata card] and it says "pci1095,3132 OtherMass Storage Controller PCI Slot3" and driver not installed. I don't even recall where I got the PCI card - do I need the PCI card driver or the RTX driver and if the first, how do I know where to get the right drive? I don't know why it's not on the computer = if it is somewhere what would it be called or what extension would it have and where would it go???

Your answer prompted me to not only check your link but see if I had any records or information around here ref. what the card was. Fortunately, I saved the box and it's a Tempo Sata E2P card from Sonnet. I went to its site and was able to find a driver, downloaded and installed it and voila, the disks in the enclosure appear on the desktop.
Thanks so much for the lead!!!

  • Looking for Multi-Bay 5.25" Enclosure

I am looking for a 2 or 4 Bay 5.25" Enclosure that will support using mobile racks. It must have more than one interface (i.e. Firewire and USB). I would prefer to have one with FW800, FW400 and USB 2.0.
Does anyone have any good suggestions?

I ended up going with a FW400/FW800 Bay from a seller on eBay. It works great.

  • Multi-bay Hard Drive Enclosure?

Currently I have an external firewire hard drive, which I pretty much use for backing up files. I was thinking of purchasing another hard drive, but I really don't want two separate enclosures.
Can anyone recommend one unit that would hold two hard drives? Is it even worth it?
    iMac 20" Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz 2 GB RAM, iBook G4 1.07 GHz 1.25 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I recently purchased (then returned) a dual enclosure from OWC (Other World Computing) for $120. It would not allow me to boot from either HD when two drives were in the enclosure. When I pulled one drive, it would allow booting from the single drive in the enclosure. I had the jumpers set for 'individual' drives so I could use two different size (and brand) drives. I gave up after several calls to OWC to try to get it to be able to boot from both drives. I then got a ≈ $60 single drive enclosure from Cool Drive to house my HD. I will gladly deal with currently two seperate external enclosures (160 GB & 250GB) and maybe add a third (500GB+) if I want more storage.

  • Multi-display windows under Mavericks

Under 10.6.8, it has been my habit (and pleasure) to open very wide terminal windows across as many as three displays in order to see the results of somewhat wide database queries without text wrapping, which affects readability and cuts the number of lines visible on the display window at once.
Under 10.9.3, when I adjust a window over towards another display so that the window would be on both displays, the window is "ghosted" until I let go of the drag bar, and if the move has not fully adjusted the window to land entirely on the display it is moving into, that half of the window promptly disappears.
Am I missing something about window positioning under Mavericks? Or, is there any way to regain the previous, multi-display-friendly window handling in Mavericks?

  • Anyone tried the AMS DS-2340SES 3.5" 4 Bay Enclosure with 3132 card

I saw the AMS DS-2340SES advertised at Outpost.com. It comes with a SiI-3132 card and a 4-port SATA PM enclosure for $129.99 here:
    http://shop3.outpost.com/product/5276267
Has anyone tried this setup on a Mac Pro? This is the lowest priced SATA PM solution I have seen so far. If it works it may be a low priced storage expansion option.

  • Storage solution and workflow

Right now I have 6 external hard drives of various brands. Four of them are FW800 equipped and the older two only have FW400.
All these are connected to a Nitro® FW800 8 port hub (I daisy chain the FW400 drives when needed)
All drives mentioned above have one thing in common. They're all either SATA II or III inside of FW enclosures.
I'm getting tired of all the mess with the cables plus all the space it takes on my desk. I am wondering if anyone can share or recommend a neater setup. For about 2 years now I have been searching for some sort of multiple bay external enclosure that would allow me to mount and unmount individual hard drives BUT without having to unmount the other mounted drives. I believe this is called a JBOD setup with a hot swap feature.
About a year ago I bought the DataTale RC-M4QJ and loved it's hot swapping feature with the minimalistic Hard Drive handles but I was disappointed by it's performance as I benchmarked it using int the AJA System Test app and on average, it performed ~25 to 35% slower than my other single HDD enclosures. So back it went for a refund.
I'm hoping someone can share their setup which achieves the same goal here. I will soon be purchasing a new MacBook Pro (as soon as Apple brings them to market) so if you know of a thunderbolt enclosure that can allow what I need to do, please let me know.
My dream enclosure would probably be a thunderbolt one which can handle RAID and JBOD and allow individual mount/unmount without screws or expensive brackets.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I also have a couple of Burly multi bay enclosures. They are rock solid and can be configured as you wish. The ones I have use sleds for the drives, which also serve as cases for the drives when unmounted and in storage.
While it is possible to do hot swapping of drives, my own policy is to always shut off power to the enclosure when changing drives. I get a little antsy about the tiny pins on the drive sata connector, and having voltage arc across to them while physically mounting the drive and they near the receiving connector.
For a Thunderbolt solution, check out CalDigit - they make really good stuff - and OWC.

  • I Know Shared Disks Are Slow, But...

I just connected an AEBS to my network and connected 3 hard drives using a multi-bay enclosure (Venus T4U). I've been backing up to the drives from two computers, a G4 and a G5, and the speed has been terrible. According to Activity Monitor, the send rate is typically around 30-60 KB/sec. That's not a typo -- I mean KB. That seems a bit ridiculous to me. It's taking all day to copy a 10 GB folder while doing nothing else on the computer. I can't even schedule overnight backups since they won't finish by morning.
I've read here that formatting the drives to non-journalled will speed things up. But I thought journalling was a good thing. I recently had a hard drive failed that was journalled and I recovered virtually everything from it.
Will reformatting without journalling be dangerous in any way? Will it really help the speed? Is there anything else that I can do?
    Thanks.
    John

    Hi John Baro1-
What kind of speed do you get with the T4U connected directly to 1 Mac?
Find the answer to this question and from there work backwards. If you get the same speed with the unit connected directly to the computer then that narrows it down quite a bit.
You will likely experience a huge difference in file transfer speeds when this unit is connected to any wireless network. You have a lot going on when your drives are accessed via a wireless network.
Report back your findings and we can go fro there.
    Luck-

  • Dual Boot with Snow Leopard and Mavericks not possible?

I have a Early 2011 Macbook Pro with 2,3 GHz i7 Quad and two 512 GB SSDs (the secondary disk in an optical drive bay enclosure). This Macbook Pro can run Snow Leopard and Mavericks on the primary disk without problems. When I try to set up a dual boot system however, problems appear and it looks like it is not possible. When I start from Snow Leopard, I cannot select Mavericks as a start volume and vice versa. The error message says something like "Bless tool" cannot use this disk, i.e. unmount and boot from it. The problem remains when I exchange the disks (putting the primary disk in the drive enclosure and vice versa). When I put the secondary drive in an external case however, it is possible to boot from it -  but strange things happen when the system starts: My computer clock is reset to 1/1/2001, WiFI passwords are not remembered for more than one session, disk permissions are reported as "repaired" but do apear as not repaired when I check them again - and other issues). I have verified both disks already and repaired permissions but that does not change the situation. So my experience is different from what is said in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/566781. It looks like the latest Mavericks cannot coexist with Snow Leopard on neiter a secondary internal drive nor on an external drive. This is strange since both disks and systems work flawless when run alone. Any suggestions to solve this problem?

When I check the Mavericks disk in the optical drive with disk utility after booting / running Snow Leopard on the primary disk I get som errors, see below ("disk utility Info"). So after all, I decided to erase the disk and install Mavericks new. But even erasing the disk is not possible when it is in the optical drive enclosure. I get this error message:
"Volume Erase failed with the error:
    Could not unmount disk"
When I put this disk into an external case connected via USB however, it starts and runds MAvericks without any Problem. Same happens when I put thie Mavericks disk into the internal primary hard disk place.

  • Backup Mac Pro w/ 4 full bays

    I have 1 Mac Pro. 4  2TB Bays.
1st bay Drive has 10.8.4 Mountaion Lion Installed
Other 3 bays are all data usage bays.
I need a way to take a scheduled backup of all drives in a convieniant manner that is set and forget. Some kind of raid, where if 1 bay should fail, I can hot swap it with the backup and be setup.
    How can I do this?

RAID provides additional mean Time to Repair after a drive failure, but Backups are not typically a "non-stop computing" requirement, and do not use the redundancy to best advantage.
Using extra drives for a RAID backup is generally not as useful as using those drives for an additional independent backup or a rotating basis ( A, B, or A, B, C) set of Backup drives.
If external single-drive enclosures do not have enough storage space, multiple sets of multi-drive enclosures can be used. Performance will not be an issue because the drives within an enclosure will be written one at a time.

  • Need some help with a Macally enclosure and a spare internal drive

Need some help with a Macally enclousure

    Aloha:
I have a Macally PHR-S100SUA enclousure that does not recognise,my WD 1001fals hard drive. It has worked just fine with other internal drives, but not this one?
This is a spare internal drive that I am trying to make an external drive to store back ups for a lot of data. But so far I can not get it recognized by the computer. Maybe I need different drivers?
    Any suggestions?
    Dan Page

    Hi-
Drivers aren't typically needed for external enclosures.
Macally has none listed for that enclosure.
The same is true for the WD drive, internal or external; no drivers.
With the exception of high end PM multi drive enclosures, I can't think of any that use drivers.
    How is the external connected?
Have you tried different cables, different ports?
    Bad/damaged cables are fairly common.
Have you verified connections inside of the enclosure?

  • Installing Windows 7 on Replacement SSD in optical bay Early 2011 MBP

So i just bought a 120gb SSD and a optical bay enclosure that i installed into my early 2011 MBP. I also bought a optical drive external usb enclosure. I was hoping that I could use bootcamp to install Windows 7 onto the SSD but when i go through the bootcamp menu and my laptop restarts im stuck with a blank black screen. Ive also tried using bootcamp to create a bootable USB (which i had to do a work around to get to work because it supposed to only work for MBA) that didnt work. Can anyone help?

  • 2 or 3 disc sata enclosures?

    Hi,
(sigh) the search for the above has been exhausting to say the least after searching these boards and doing research, i purchased a sonnet tech pci-x 4 port esata card, a 500 GB maxtor HD and i placed an order through a local reseller for a fusion 400 from Sonnet. This was just after the release of the Fusion 500. my reseller tells me that the order went through (haven't been charged yet thank God) and Sonnet's website showed that the fusion 400 shipped the same day. this was a few weeks ago. i bought through the reseller instead of direct b/c the reseller could absorb the duty charges (i live in Canada).
So, this was 2.5 weeks ago. the reseller had said it would get to them by this tuesday, then to me by today. i called the reseller yesterday for tracking numbers...now he says Sonnet's no longer selling the 400s and they are only fulfilling existing orders. The status of my order is unknown right now. i would buy a 500, but i really don't need Port multiplying; it's more expensive and i would need a new card, which is also more expensive.
    So, i'm searching once again.
I've decided that a 2 or 3 disc array would be great. 4 or 5 bay would be awesome, but more expensive.
    it would have to be:
    - sata 1 or 2; 3.0 or lower GBps
    - preferably directly connected to the hd tray so there is no need for secondary cables
    - maybe a temperature gauge?
    - quiet would be preferable
Macsales has a 2 bay gadget, but it doesn't use the 3.0 GBps speed. i do heavy video transfer/editing/dvd work so the more speed, the better.
i find addonics website confusing to know what to order and as of right now, their store will not come up, which is a bit scary.
thanks in advance. i'm a bit bummed as I have the card and HD...just no way to get 'er going Oh, and a pile of work which could be done faster if i had a solution
    Cheers,
    Keeber

    Hi,
When choosing a SATA enclosure you have to decide what is most important to you. Acoustics or heat? The very quiet enclosures usually run warmer than the very cool enclosures.
It sounds like you have a Sonnet Tempo 4+4 card. With that card you can consider both internal and external mounting options on a PowerMac G5 with PCI-X.
    Internal
The best internal mounting I have is the G5 Bracket. It can mount up to three drives internally. I find that using two drives in front of the CPU fan does not increase the temperature of the G5 significantly. You can see an AMUG review of this $59 internal mounting option here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/g5bracket/
This is an inexpensive way to add a few SATA hard drives internally with a Tempo 4+4.
    External
External SATA enclosure options fall into two camps.
    1. Hot swap drive tray enclosures that make it very easy to remove and replace SATA hard drives.
    2. Enclosures that do not use trays and require you to unscrew the drive from the enclosure mounting brackets in order to replace or use a different SATA hard drive.
    1EN2 $169.95
The FirmTek 1EN2 $169.95 is a quiet two bay SATA enclosure that meets most new SATA users needs. It is small - about the size of two drives and is very quiet. It has external SATA "Type L" connectors which are the original SATA style. Sonnet 4+4 cards use an eSATA connection which is a "Type I" connector. You would need to ask FirmTek if they can substitute the normal cables with SATA -> eSATA cables so that it will connect properly to your card. The 1EN2 dual SATA enclosure is a great solution.
    Addonics Storage Tower $139.99
Another low cost favorite of mine is the Addonics Storage Tower with 6 eSATA ports for $139.99. It is model ST6ESA. The nice thing about the Storage Tower is that you can start out cheap and mount drives directly in it using up to four 5 1/4" drive bay mounting brackets for 3.5" hard drive. These are model AAHDMK53 at $3.50 each. For $14 in brackets and $140 for the case you can mount up to four drives. However, the best thing about the Storage Tower is that you can upgrade it to a hot swap enclosure later using the Disk Array 3SA or 4SA drive cages. I set one of these up and it is totally awesome. It costs $140 for the Storage Tower model ST6ESA and two 3SA units cost me $90 each. For $320, I can mount up to six hard drives. I have not found another six bay unit anywhere near this price. I also needed cables at $20 each (model AAESATA100C). You can see a review of this setup at:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/addonics/3sa/
You can see a review of the Storage Tower options here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/addonics/tower/
With the Storage Tower you can add hot swap trays or a port multiplier and switch between the setups you want to use. It is the most flexible SATA enclosure construction set I have ever used and its priced right.
    TrayDock eSATA $449
If you want a four bay enclosure with hot swap trays and the ability to keep your hard drives cooler than any other enclosure I have tried you should look at the WiebeTech TrayDock eSATA. It keeps drives at 101 degrees or less even after 90 minutes of constant hard work. No other enclosure I have tested can do this. However, it is not quiet. See the AMUG review for the details. This would be my first choice for 24 hour a day operation.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/wiebetech/esata/
    FirmTek SeriTek/2eEN4 eSATA 4 Bay Enclosure $499.95
If you want a very quiet 4 bay hot swap enclosure the 2eEN4 is a small quiet enclosure at a nice price. It works well and is quieter than any other 4 bay enclosure I have tested. While it keeps drives within the manufacturers environmental parameters the hard drives run considerably warmer under heavy activity than when mounted in the TrayDock eSATA.
    Using a PC case
I have looked at the possibility of using a PC case but they are so large and take up so much more room than a Addonics Storage Tower that can hold 6 drives. In addition, if you want hot swap you still have to buy the drive cages as PC cases do not come with them for free. Once you put 8 drives in a PC case and try to move it you will understand why a 6 bay Storage Tower is easier to move and takes up a lot less space. I am still looking at various drive ideas but I have not found a PC case yet that looks great next to a G5. There may be some other options coming soon though. I have seen 12 bay SATA rack units that are coming down in price. I would much rather have one of them than a PC when their prices drop to under $500.
    I hope this information helps,
    Michael
